Ahh, I love the theme to 'Out of Africa.' My all time favourite... so beautiful. Also, yay for Ordinary People. It's unfairly criticised for beating Raging Bull. Good to see Forrest Gump, Titanic (my all time favourite movie), Terms of Endearment (underrated), Braveheart, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rebecca (unbelievably amazing film), Lawrence of Arabia (in my Top 5 all time faves), Casablanca (the greatest movie ever made IMO), The Deer Hunter, All About Eve, Schindler's List... but most of all, I'm so pleased about Gone With the Wind being your No. 1. That film is indescribably amazing... This is your best video yet Jason! Loved it.
I'm so glad you included Annie Hall, It Happened One Night and The Apartment on this list, they're true canons of Romantic-Comedy films, since then no romantic comedy films has been made in same scale, not even close.
Interesting list, Jason. Glad to see ALL ABOUT EVE rated so high--one of the most literate screenplays ever with some of the best and best-delivered dialog ever. What I would like to see you do is a list of movies that did not win the Oscar but SHOULD have. AND/OR ...a list of the performances that SHOULD have won, but didn't.
Thanks Hoyt - Go to my Uploads Section, I have a whole chronicle dedicated to films that were never nominated but I feel deserved recognition. I appreciate your feedback!
This is just a great list. I really applaud your conclusion of lesser known/loved films like Terms of Endearment and especially Ordinary People. Of course, you could have included a lot of other great Best Picture Winners (Bridge on the River Kwai, American Beauty, Ben-Hur, Amadeus, Slumdog Millionaire). But I can't really complain, because your choices are great and feel genuine.
1. Godfather (1972) 2. Godfather pt. 2 (1974) 3. Casablanca (1942) 4. Return of the King (2003) 5. Schindler's List (1993) 6. Gone With The Wind (1939) 7. Silence of the Lambs (1991) 8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) 9. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 10. No Country for Old Men (2007) 11. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 12. On the Waterfront (1954) 13. The Deer Hunter (1978) 14. Birdman (2014) 15. The Departed (2006) 16. Rocky (1976) 17. Sound of Music (1965) 18. Platoon (1986) 19. Braveheart (1995) 20. American Beauty (1999) 21. Ben-Hur (1959) 22. Twelve Years A Slave (2013) 23. A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) 24. A Beautiful Mind (2001) 25. Titanic (1997)
+Rise of the sugars 4, 5, 10, 19, 20, 22?, 24, 25. I could say I'm honored, but actually while it's nice that you liked the films I've worked on, I didn't take credit for any of them, so I get dissed and forgotten in favor of the intellectual property thieves.
As usual, a thoughtful and beautifully constructed list--thank you, Jason Movie Guy! I love these lists of yours, and here, I particularly appreciate your inclusion of "Annie Hall" (among my favorite movies, along with "Hannah and her Sisters"). Please, can you tell me from which movie/soundtrack is the music that plays (roughly) between 3:55 and 6:02?
I watched All About Eve as my last Best Picture winner to finish this endeavor, and I’m so glad I ended on a high note! Such a great cast and incredible banter and arguments in it!
"Casablanca" only #6??? It was easily the Best Film of all time for its atmosphere and it's timeliness, FDR and Churchill were meeting in Casablanca when Warners released the film. There are some good choices in here, some I give credit to the author for not bowing to political correctness (i.e. the PC boys automatically dismiss "Titanic" when it was one of the meticulously well-executed films of all time.), but to applaud such overblown films as "Braveheart" and "Forrest Gump" leaves one laughing hysterically.
+William Snyder I wrote the speeches and a lot of the dialog for Forrest Gump as well as Braveheart. They were indeed overblown. I handled Schindler's List, LOTR, and Titanic better, eh? I worked on 5 of the top 25 of all time. Not bad for a piker. I did Braveheart and List when I was 18!
Nice list! Mine would be (my list will likely be very different so don't rage): 14.Titanic 13.Annie Hall 12.Sound of Music 11.Forrest Gump 10.All About Eve 9.The Godfather 8.In the Heat of the Night 7.Dances With Wolves 6.The Bridge on the River Kwai 5.Casablanca 4.Lawrence of Arabia 3.Gone With the Wind 2.Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 1.Shindler's List
Hi!!! Love your videos and your channel in general. Could you make, as possible, a Top 25 of the Best Original Songs nominated for an Oscar that failed to win? Thank you in advance!
Thank you, I am always looking for great movies that I haven't seen (especially the older movies). So glad Gone With The Wind was number one! I don't know how you figure it out though.
I agree with most of your best pictures. My fave movies and actresses are in there - Rebecca (Joan Fontaine), Silence of the Lambs (Jodie Foster), Gone with the Wind (Olivia de Havilland), Audrey Hepburn, Casablanca. I predicted you'll put Schindler's Lists -- it deserves its place. It Happened One Night is also good in there. Good job!
Very nice list! The only thing is I would have put The Silence of the Lambs higher, and I would have definitely added American Beauty, because I personally think that it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Thanks for the work you did putting together this list. I can understand your choices. However, how in the world is Mrs. Miniver not on this list? Quite possibly the greatest movie I've ever seen.
Here is my list(if I leave out a masterpiece that means I haven't seen it yet but I hope to): 1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2. The Godfather 3.Casablanca 4. The Godfather: Part II 5. Gladiator 6. Titanic 7. The Departed 8. Birdman 9. 12 Years a Slave 10. Forrest Gump 11. Rocky
I don't agree with everything on the list! However, what I do like about your list is that it has a lot of variety in it! Your listing has been one of the more enjoyable ones to watch! Thanks for posting!
I have only seen 73 out of the 86 Best Picture films and I own the last of the 13 that I have yet to see on DVD, so I am planning on finishing the list. But, I am taking my time because there are other films that I do want to watch and I'm trying to work on videos for my RUclips channel. But, once I do watch all of them, I'll be re-watching all of them to get a better sense on my thoughts of them. I always want to judge them on their own merits and not focus on whether they deserve the top award or not as a lot of people I've noticed do when ranking them on their list. As for you list, it's interesting take and it felt more personal to your liking then the usual consensus, which I always find more interesting and satisfying.
Top 15: 1. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return To The King. 2. Gladiator. 3. The Godfather Part II. 4. Gone With The Wind. 5. Schindler's List. 6. Casablanca. 7. Lawrence of Arabia. 8. The Godfather. 9. Braveheart. 10. No Country For Old Men. 11. It Happened One Night 12. American Beauty. 13. On The Waterfront. 14. All About Eve. 15. Ben-Hur.
Really liked ur list! Alright but at least u took Godfather 3rd or I would've hated ur video that aside is Gone with the Wind really that good? And hv u seen Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Here is my Top 10 10. Gone With The Wind 9. Million Dollar Baby 8. The Godfather 7. Rocky 6. Titanic 5. Forrest Gump 4. Ben-Hur 3. Lawrence Of Arabia 2. The Godfather Part 2 1. Casablanca
Hey Marcus! Thanks for your great comments I appreciate someone who understands art like me. Jason Travis - Chicago is my Facebook and my email is jasonmovieguy@yahoo.com
My list 1. Gone With the Wind 2. It Happened One Night 3. On the Waterfront 4. Titanic 5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 6. Rebecca 7. The Sound of Music 8. 12 Year's Slave 9. The Silence of the Lambs 10. Ben-Hur 11. Lawrence of Arabia 12. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 13. The Godfather 14. Casablanca 15. Mrs. Miniver 16. From Here to Eternity 17. My Ranking of Everyone I've Seen: 1: The Departed-2006 (10) 2: Gladiator-2000 (10) 3: Lord of The Rings: Return of The King-2003 (10) 4: Silence of The Lambs-1991 (10) 5: No Country For Old Men-2007 (10) 6: Braveheart-1995 (10) 7: Platoon-1986 (10) 8: Schindlers List-1993 (10) 9: Argo-2012 (9.6) 10: Spotlight-2015 (9.3) 11: Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)-2014 (9.1) 12: The Deer Hunter-1978 (9.1) 13: The Kings Speech-2010 (9.1) 14: Amadeus-1984 (9) 15: 12 Years A Slave-2013 (8.9) 16: American Beauty-1999 (8.8) 17: Slumdog Millionaire-2008 (8.7) 18: Million Dollar Baby-2004 (8.7) 19: The Godfather-1972 (8.6) 20: Titanic-1997 (8.6) 21: The Godfather Part II-1974 (8.4) 22: One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest-1975 (8.3) 23: Ordinary People-1980 (8) 24: Forrest Gump-1994 (8) 25: Crash-2005 (7.8) 26: Gandhi-1982 (7.2) 27: A Beautiful Mind-2001 (6.8) 28: Rocky-1976 (6.5) 29: Unforgiven-1992 (5.2) 30: The Hurt Locker-2009 (4.5) 31: Dances With Wolves-1990 (4.1)
All Quiet on the Western Front should definately be on here. I would also make a case for Ben-Hur, Best Years of Our Lives,The Hurt Locker, and Bridge on River Kwai. Otherwise pretty good list.
My List would have been 25. Ben-Hur 24. My Fair Lady 23. The French Connection 22. Lord of the Rings: return of the king 21. West Side Story 20. Midnight Cowboy 19. The Departed 18. From Here to Eternity 17. Platoon 16. The Silence of the Lambs 15. The Bridge on the River Kwai 14. The Sound of Music 13. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 12. Annie Hall 11. All About Eve 10. Forrest Gump 9. The Apartment 8. On the Waterfront 7. The Godfather-2 6. The Deer Hunter 5. Casablanca 4. Gone With the Wind 3. Lawrence of Arabia 2. The Godfather 1. Schindler's List
Don't agree with all, but nice effort on the production! If you're curious, I'd replace Ordinary People (which I loved) and Forrest Gump (also loved) with No Country for Old Men and The Hurt Locker. But I can also make my own list now, can't I?!?! ;-)
1. Schindler's List 2. Unforgiven 3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 4. Birdman 5. The Sound of Music 6. The Silence of the Lambs 7. 12 Years a Slave 8. Ben-Hur 9. The Artist 10. All About Eve 11. Casablanca 12. Gone with the Wind 13. Patton 14. Platoon 15. West Side Story 16. Kramer vs. Kramer 17. The Departed 18. The French Connection 19. Rocky 20. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 21. Gladiator 22. Braveheart 23. Lawrence of Arabia 24. Dances with Wolves 25. Grand Hotel
it is cool that most of them I didn't watched . from the list I saw : Titanic Braveheart The Silence of The Lambs Schindler's List The Lord of the Rings The Departed Forrest Gump and I love them all , too exited for the rest but I think this list miss American Beauty Amadeus Great movies
Personally I would not put My Fair Lady, The Apartment, Ordinary People, and Forrest Gump on this list because of the competition they went up against that year and there is a general consensus of people that disagree that they deserved to win and I do agree with those people.
1. Godfather 2. Schiendler's list 3. Godfather II 4. Gone with the wind 5. Casablanca 6. Lawrence of Arabia 7. Forrest gump 8. One flew over the cuckoo's nest 9. The lord of the rings: the return of the king 10. Silence of the lambs 11. West side story 12. All about Eve 13. The deer hunter 14, Annie Hall 15. Ben Hur 16. On the waterfornt 17. Rain man HN: rebecca, sound of music, braveheart, a beautiful mind.
Great list! and remarkable well made video. I would say FOR ME take out Titanic (which I hate), and Ordinary People (which I don't hate but HATE how it beat Raging Bull) and I also wish The Departed was higher. other than that AWSOME list! I would have added American Beauty and Unforgiven #1.Schindler's list #2.The Departed #3.Gone with the wind #4.Casablanca #5.American Beauty #6.Platoon #7.One flew over the coo coos nest #8.Silence of the lambs #9.The Godfather #10.Braveheart #11.Forest Gump #12.The Hurt Locker #13.The Deer Hunter #14.Lawrence of Arabia #15.Unforgiven
IMO The Godfather II should be #1. I accept Schlinder's list being in the Top 5. But not Gone with the Wind. Its decent as was Casablanca. But they would not be in my Top 25. Nor would Annie Hall & The Apartment. There are many more deserving films than those four. The Sound of Music, In the Heat of the Night, Patton, The Sting, Rain Man, Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, American Beauty, Million Dollar Baby, No Country for Old Men, & Argo were ALL better. But then we all have our favorites. There can't be a universally definitive Top 25. Too many great choices!
Sadly most movies that win Best Picture shouldn't have won. Glad to see Midnight Cowboy on your list but, I would've had The Sting & The French Connection on my list.
it is your opinion. Nothing and hear me nothing overcomes Star wars The best movie franchise ever created by men by far. even created a culture and set the future for our generations to come. Forever and ever Star wars number 1
+Ennio Carpio I suggested to Steven Spielberg that he film The Star War, my favorite novella of 1963. Can't find a copy now anywhere. I invented the Force, the Jedi (one Jed, two Jedi), and I'm Yoda. (YO! who me? DUH!).
Yeah, rightly so, too. The Magnificent 7 was a total rip off of 7 Samurai. After we'd just done Close Encounters and were working on "The Baby Alien Movie" the inverse of Close, i.e. E.T. he suddenly shut up. He'd decided on following "The Day the Earth Stood Still", but little did he know that "The Day the Earth Stood Still" had followed the Passion of the Christ! I'll have to see "Hidden Fortress" and try to figure out who robbed him. I think the guy who did "Deep Impact" got something, too, because when Steve & I cooked it up (along with Armageddon), I used an old science fiction novel as it's base.
i like your list.. but for me American Beauty should be on this.
Totally agre, I was about to comment the same thing, American beauty is one of the best too
Totally agree too.
Okay that's nice but where is "Amadeus"?! That film is gold!
Yeah that movie and Parasite are my favorites
Loved it.
I am totally glad Ordinary People is on the list.
I'm so glad you included Annie Hall, It Happened One Night and The Apartment on this list, they're true canons of Romantic-Comedy films, since then no romantic comedy films has been made in same scale, not even close.
Thumbs up! I love "Titanic", too!
once again, thank you for all your videos jason.
Thank you detailll3
Totally agree with your selection, dude. Congratulations, and keep on making great videos!
I dont know why but i love 'The Apartment' so much.. Bye The Way this is a perfect list.
so i will watch it!
You should ıt is perfect ^_^
Interesting list, Jason. Glad to see ALL ABOUT EVE rated so high--one of the most literate screenplays ever with some of the best and best-delivered dialog ever. What I would like to see you do is a list of movies that did not win the Oscar but SHOULD have. AND/OR ...a list of the performances that SHOULD have won, but didn't.
Thanks Hoyt - Go to my Uploads Section, I have a whole chronicle dedicated to films that were never nominated but I feel deserved recognition. I appreciate your feedback!
Thank you, Jason. I am just now seeing your response. And I will check out that "chronicle."
Thanks for a good list and for putting Titanic on it also. Loved that film! I would have liked to see Ben-Hur on there also.
Where is No Country for Old Men ?
Should be top 10 imo.
Connor Webb It's my opinion that it should be in top 10.
+Red-Star Thanks. I helped with the story for that one, too!

+Rise of the sugars I worked on the stories for your 4 & 5 for Steve S and his pals.
Ross Nicholson Cool
+Rise of the sugars actually A Streetcar Named Desire lost against An American In Paris in 1951
+Rise of the sugars 4, 5, 10, 19, 20, 22?, 24, 25. I could say I'm honored, but actually while it's nice that you liked the films I've worked on, I didn't take credit for any of them, so I get dissed and forgotten in favor of the intellectual property thieves.

Loved the John Barry music
alfredo gomez There are two of us! For me, he, John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith are the best movie soundtrack composers!
Hi!!! Love your videos and your channel in general. Could you make, as possible, a Top 25 of the Best Original Songs nominated for an Oscar that failed to win? Thank you in advance!
Hey Mercury- I was considering that, and think it's a great idea. Expect it to be in the 2014 lineup :)
Thank you! keep the greatness! Blessings!
Thank you, I am always looking for great movies that I haven't seen (especially the older movies). So glad Gone With The Wind was number one! I don't know how you figure it out though.
Thank you for watching Debi- Gone with the Wind has always been my favorite Best Picture winner, both for it's story and history.
Oh and also, thanks for honorable mentions for YCTIWY and Sound of Music. I need to re-watch Gladiator.
Very good list.
The best and the number one is ¡T I T A N I C!
Thrilled to see Deer Hunter in top 10
Parasite would be here if this was made a couple of years later
Great list I must agree
Great List !
Good job!
Thank you Cyn! Appreciate it.
And by the way, you're music is my fave, too as much as its movie -- music themes from the Somewhere in Time
Thank you Cyn! I appreciate the comments. I should be doing more homages soon.
Ben-Hur should be on here.
Other than that great list
No last emperor?
Where's American Beauty? In any case, nice video!
Lovely!!!! The Silence and Ordinary People!!!!
Good list, you are entitled to your opinions. I could fault some of these choices, but I think I revere Hollywood's Golden Era more.

5. Gladiator
6. Titanic

West Side Story won 10 academy awards and its not on this list?????
Hey! Amazing video... Thanks, as always; do you have facebook or twitter, to send some suggestions (if it's ok with you LOL)?
Hey Mercury! Thank you for watching and for the comments. Jason Travis - Chicago, facebook. Love to hear suggestions.
Impressive! I'm also trying to watch all the Best Picture winners; I'm at 43 out of 89 (including Sunrise).
I do agree that it's very interesting to see people's personal choices for lists like these; the opinions feel more authentic.
Ones I agree with most are It Happened One Night, LotR: Return of the King, and On the Waterfront.
You are obviously a huge "Gone with The Wind" fan.

Where is Gladiator ?
Honorable Mention
+Nicotine46 I did the story for Gladiator.
Kyle O'Bryan Well that just like... your opinion, man ! I think it's one on the greatest modern films.
Kyle O'Bryan Yes maybe you're wrong :p
I love The Dude as well but I can't compare these two great films.

Personally, I would have “Best Years of Our Lives” near the top. I’d find a place for “From Here to Eternity”. But I like seeing differing opinions.
All Quiet on the Western Front should definately be on here. I would also make a case for Ben-Hur, Best Years of Our Lives,The Hurt Locker, and Bridge on River Kwai. Otherwise pretty good list.
Didn't you watched Ben Hur?
Yes and it didn’t make the top 25. Everyone has lists - make one and show us your choices.
My List would have been
25. Ben-Hur
24. My Fair Lady
23. The French Connection
22. Lord of the Rings: return of the king
21. West Side Story
20. Midnight Cowboy
19. The Departed

Don't agree with all, but nice effort on the production! If you're curious, I'd replace Ordinary People (which I loved) and Forrest Gump (also loved) with No Country for Old Men and The Hurt Locker. But I can also make my own list now, can't I?!?! ;-)

probably the biggest fuck up in Oscar history was How Green Was My Valley beating Citizen Kane for Best Picture
Amadeus?
it is cool that most of them I didn't watched .
from the list I saw :
Titanic
Braveheart
The Silence of The Lambs
Schindler's List
The Lord of the Rings
The Departed
Forrest Gump
and I love them all , too exited for the rest
but I think this list miss
American Beauty
Amadeus
Great movies
Where is Rocky?
He put it on his list of worst winners (too much competition).
Where's "Citizen Kane"?
did not win best picture...huge anti-Kane campaign by William Randolph Hearst prevented this - Welles and Mankiewicz won for screenplay...
Should have won but it didn’t. This is for the ones that won .
Where the fuck is No Country for Old Men, Unforgiven and Ben Hur?
+Lewis Cranston no counry for old men and unforgiven is awasome, but ben hur is dick!;)
good list but Ithink one flew over the cuckoo's nest should be before rebecca
Nice... but have you seen American Beauty?
Personally I would not put My Fair Lady, The Apartment, Ordinary People, and Forrest Gump on this list because of the competition they went up against that year and there is a general consensus of people that disagree that they deserved to win and I do agree with those people.
LOVE to see ordinary people getting some due recognition. where's amadeus?!
1. Godfather
2. Schiendler's list
3. Godfather II

HN: rebecca, sound of music, braveheart, a beautiful mind.
+Mike Anderson Rodriguez 2, 7, 9, 21, Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, eh? Six's not bad.
Jason, I believe, you missed out the movie " The boy in the stripped pajamas"
I didn't win, it was not even nominated
and Ben-Hur ??????? . . . .
***** obviously not in my top 25
How could Ben-Hur have been left off this list? No other movie won more Academy Awards......
I only came here for the Titanic..Great movie!!!! Don't know why people hate it so much
where is American Beauty man?
I think The Godfather should be No.1
Great list! and remarkable well made video.
I would say FOR ME take out Titanic (which I hate), and Ordinary People (which I don't hate but HATE how it beat Raging Bull) and I also wish The Departed was higher.
other than that AWSOME list!
I would have added American Beauty and Unforgiven
#1.Schindler's list
#2.The Departed
#3.Gone with the wind
#4.Casablanca
#5.American Beauty
#6.Platoon
#7.One flew over the coo coos nest
#8.Silence of the lambs
#9.The Godfather
#10.Braveheart
#11.Forest Gump
#12.The Hurt Locker
#13.The Deer Hunter
#14.Lawrence of Arabia
#15.Unforgiven
Forrest Gump better than TITANIC, seriously FORREST GUMP really sucks
Deer Hunter, Annie Hall, Departed...come on now!
Thank God Gone with the Wind made #1!!!
C Zee Deer Hunter is incredible. What movie did you watch?
How are Titanic and Forrest Gump so high up!? They were brilliant films. And where oh where is American Beauty?????
it is your opinion.
