Some performances that you did not include that you should have were Spencer Tracy in "Captain's Courageous" (1937), Ernest Borgnine in "Marty" (1955), Burt Lancaster in "Elmer Gantry" (1960), and Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond" (1981). Though I am glad that you included Spencer Tracy in "Boys Town" (1938), James Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), Gregory Peck in "To Kill A Mockingbird" (1962), Sidney Poitier in "Lilies Of The Field" (1963), Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), and Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump" (1994).
Not a single actor mentioned here in top 25 can come even close to Robert De Niro for his performance in Raging bull. Forget Raging Bull, not a single actor can think of surpassing him . Such is our Bobby. Hands down , the greatest ever..!!
aman gajraj Firstly, De Niro should have either tied with or lost to John Hurt that year. Secondly, as far as this list is concerned, Brando in on the Waterfront and Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird were better.
Hi Renee! Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. It's people like you that motivate me to keep creating art and videos and I'm so glad you enjoy them!
If I had to make a top 25 list it would have been 25. James Stewart - The Philadelphia Story 24. Humphrey Bogart- The African Queen 23. Spencer Tracy - Boys Town 22. Jeremy Irons- Reversal of Fortune 21. George C Scott- Patton 20. William Hurt- Kiss of the Spider Woman 19. Gary Cooper- High Noon 18. Gene Hackman - The French Connection 17. Peter Finch - Network 16. Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot 15. Clark Gable- It Happened One Night 14. F Murray Abraham - Amadeus 13. Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man 12. Ben Kingsley - Gandhi 11. Alec Guinness - Bridge on the River Kwai 10. Sidney Poitier - Lilies of the Field 9. Laurence Olivier - Hamlet 8. Marlon Brando - The Godfather 7. Jack Nicholson - One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest 6. Gregory Peck - To Kill a Mockingbird 5. Daniel Day Lewis - There will be blood 4. Robert de Niro- Raging Bull 3. Anthony Hopkins-Silence of the lambs 2. Tom Hanks- Forrest Gump 1. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront
I always thought Lee J. Cobb stole "On The Waterfront", one of those rare villain performances that is so good that I hate his guts every second he's on screen.
I like your list. I was lucky enough to see most of these actors in their winning films. Daniel Day Lewis was great in There Will Be Blood but you forgot another Daniel Day Lewis movie where he also won an Oscar, My Left Foot which for me is the greatest performance by an actor on screen. You also forgot F. Murray Abraham who also won Best Actor in Amadeus.
WOW what a video…the quality of its production and your list of actors are great. I tried to do a video list myself, but it’s nothing compared to yours…really nice job!!!
+Mario Brescio That's very nice of you Mario! I worked FOREVER on this one lol. Don't be afraid to make a video. I would love to see it. Hi Nancy - thank you SO much for the kind words! I appreciate your comments and feedback, and glad this can be an inspiration to watch. I work hard at selecting the music to go with the imagery, as I like having the goosebump effect of remembering great film works. The music at the end is "Creep" (Live) from the Social Network soundtrack, one of my favorites. Be sure to check out my 25 Greatest Films to Win Best Picture- new video, needs more traffic! @@JasonMovieGuy Hi sir. I realize this is 8 years later but I just discovered this absolute gem of a video and I can thank you enough for creating it and putting it out there in the universe, as it’s a better place with the video in it. I suffer from depression and anxiety and whenever that flares up, I put on this video and it assuages my symptoms quickly and dramatically. On a separate note, I just looked up “Creep” from the “Social Network” soundtrack and according to iTunes, it doesn’t actually exist. May I ask if that was an error? Could it be from another source? Thank you.
My fave Oscar winners are: 1. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump (1994) 2. Anthony Hopkins - The Silence of the Lambs (1991) 3. Clark Gable - It Happened One Night (1934) 4. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull (1980) 5. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront (1954) 6. Henry Fonda - On Golden Pond (1981) 7. James Cagney - Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) 8. Jason - every time I come away with a list of movies I need to see so I can fully appreciate the greatness of the works you've listed. Thank you for putting together so many great lists.
Here's My List 1. DDL - There Will Be Blood 2. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull 3. Anthony Hopkins - Silence of the Lambs 4. Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 5. Tom Hanks - Philadelphia 6. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront 7. Nicholas Cage - Leaving Las Vegas 8. Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man 9. Gregory Peck - To Kill a Mockingbird 10. Peter Finch - Network 11. Marlon Brando - The Godfather 12. Kevin Spacey - American Beauty 13. Adrien Brody - The Pianist 14. Colin Firth - The King's Speech 15. Forest Whitaker - Last King of Scotland 16. DDL - Lincoln 17. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote 18. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump 19. Sean Penn - Mystic River 20. Russell Crowe - Gladiator
This must have been a hard list for you to put together, Jason. I agree on your top ten, but believe Forrest Whitaker should have been included for "The Last King of Scotland" somewhere on the list.
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
This list is very good! However, I would include F.Murray Abraham's amazing work in Amadeus, Alec Guinness's career best in The Bridge on the River Kwai and William Hurt's work in Kiss of The Spider Woman.
This is my TOP 12 of Best Actor Oscar Winner: 1.Daniel Day-Lewis for "There will be Blood" 2.Al Pacino for "Scent of a Woman" 3.Kevin Spacey for "American Beauty" 4.Denzel Washington for "Training Day" 5.Jack Nicholson for "As Good As It Gets" 6.Michael Douglas for "Wall Street" 7.Gene Hackman for "The French Connection" 8.Adrien Brody for "The Pianist" 9.Ernest Borgnine for "Marty" 10.Daniel Day-Lewis for "Lincoln" 11.J.Nicholson for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" 12.R.Crowe for "Gladiator"
Kudos to Jason - great job putting this list together! I feel the following have to be added somewhere: - Russell Crowe in Gladiator - Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets - Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies - Paul Newman - The Color of Money - Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou To make room I would delete the following: - Peter Finch (I feel he only won because he died that year!) - Richard Dreyfuss - Jeremy Irons - Colin Firth - Denzel Washington Thanks for making this wonderful list!
Yeeeesssssssss....! Yes,yes, yes... I was very expectant about what man could be crowned by you as the best of the best. And when the first flash of Raging Bull appeared, something exploded inside of me. Jake LaMotta is undoubtedly the character that de Niro needed to take his seat in the Olympus of Cinema.Thanks,Jason.. !!!
Awesome list! I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe Daniel Day Lewis could have been represented by My Left Foot, or Tom Hanks by Saving Private Ryan, but either way, this is a very good list. Seeing my favorite actor of all time at number one was awesome.
This is a very well-studied list, and I agree with most of the picks with a few differences. I would have Peck, as Atticus Finch at the very top, and would have fit Ronald Colman, in "A Double Life" in there somewhere. So many of these same actors gave great performances that did not win, Spencer Tracy MANY times over, and Denzil in "Malcolm X" and "Philadelphia." Bogie in "Casablanca" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," etc. Thanks for putting this together. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comments James! You should check out my other videos that showcase Best Actors Nominated and Best Actors Never Nominated. I chronicled each honor into 3 separate categories.
I agree with you. To me his most Oscar Worthy performance was in Dog Day Afternoon, unfortunately that also happened to be the same year as Jack Nicholson in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Interesting selections! Personally, I would not put Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump nearly as high on the list, but I was very glad to see Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal Lecter very high on this list. If you're considering Best Supporting Actors as possibilities on this list (such as Denzel Washington), then I would recommend thinking of Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men." Also, I love the music!
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
This is one of my very favorite movie scores of all time. Thomas Newman should have won the Oscar for the Scores of Road to Perdition and The Shawshank Redemption.
Brando in Godfather 'mannered, silly' OK big guy. Any other actor would have hammed it up and turned the 'gangster' into a cartoonish villain. He completely played against that and created a the most softly spoken, family-orientated boss who never raised his voice and consequently was even more terrifying and realistic. He was genius.
I'll have to disagree with you there. There is a difference between being subtle yet intimidating and being downright underwhelming. Brando in "The Godfather" and frankly any other role of his was definitely more of the latter.
great list JasonMovieGuy but i would take off a few like tom hanks in forrest gump and replace it with his performance in philadelphia. also, u missed al pacino in scent of a woman, maximillian schell in judgement at nuremberg, and basically everything day lewis is in. but great video, indeed. can't wait for the 25 actresses.
18 minutes Anthony Hopkins was onscreen for 118/minutes. This is not to. Say he didn’t deserve it. I am saying he delivered the most memorable performance in just 18 minutes.
Great list, finally someone who appreciates how fantastic Denzel was in Training Day (easily one of of the best cop films along with The French Connection). Tom Hanks is a top 10 actor, not a top 5.
You don't have to be rude : ( It is just my opinion. And saying man with a woman doesn't sound right, lol. Still, you are right about that. Maybe I love Tom Hanks so much that I overreacted... Sorry!
That might be my number one pick. Although I am not a fan of New Hollywood movies "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is by far my favorite movie of the era, and easily one of my top ten, maybe even top five favorite movies of all time.
I don't get how Daniel-Day Lewis wasn't on here for My Left Foot...
And I would have placed him HIGHER
Daniel Day Lewis for My Left Foot is the best acting I have ever seen.
+Connor Harte Him, Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) for truly SUPERB portrayals of individuals suffering from mental problems/disorders.
I have yet to come across a person portraying a disorder who does it so skillfully as these three.
true
+Lemon Drops Leo DiCaprio in What's eating Gilbert Grape
He didnt win an oscar but that was surely great acting
Lee Elliott He did win the Oscar for My Left Foot.
Where's Adrien Brody for The Pianist?
All of us can endlessly debate who should be on this list and in what order...there are so many great choices but ultimately it is great to be reminded about all these great performances and to enjoy the excellent work in compiling them so artfully! Thanks for this!
Thanks for saying this. It helps put it all in perspective lol!

The Silent of the Lambs... GREAT movie, Anthony superb actor
The song that starts at 5:10 is called You Were Born For This
Now, you can finally added Leonardo Dicaprio for The Revenant
Ohh fuck him.
This must have been a hard list for you to put together, Jason. I agree on your top ten, but believe Forrest Whitaker should have been included for "The Last King of Scotland" somewhere on the list.
No Al Pacino??.... You must be kidding me.!!
I know, weird to me too!! He's fab.
This is my TOP 12 of Best Actor Oscar Winner:
1.Daniel Day-Lewis for "There will be Blood"
2.Al Pacino for "Scent of a Woman"
3.Kevin Spacey for "American Beauty"
4.Denzel Washington for "Training Day"
5.Jack Nicholson for "As Good As It Gets"
6.Michael Douglas for "Wall Street"
7.Gene Hackman for "The French Connection"
8.Adrien Brody for "The Pianist"
9.Ernest Borgnine for "Marty"
10.Daniel Day-Lewis for "Lincoln"
11.J.Nicholson for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest"
12.R.Crowe for "Gladiator"
1. One Flew
2. Waterfront
3. Kramer vs Kramer
4.F Murray Abraham
5. Raging Bull
NICE VIDEO WELL DONE COULD YOU PLEASE PUT THE TRAKCLIST IS VERY GOOD
THANKS
Kudos to Jason - great job putting this list together!
I feel the following have to be added somewhere:
- Russell Crowe in Gladiator
- Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets
- Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies
- Paul Newman - The Color of Money
- Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou
To make room I would delete the following:
- Peter Finch (I feel he only won because he died that year!)
- Richard Dreyfuss
- Jeremy Irons
- Colin Firth
- Denzel Washington
Thanks for making this wonderful list!
the scene from training day that you showed in this is so amazing. every time i watch it i have to remind myself its a movie. denzel is a genius
Ha thanks Morgan! I did this years ago and it still is one of my favorite videos. They're not easy to compose.
Awesome list! I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe Daniel Day Lewis could have been represented by My Left Foot, or Tom Hanks by Saving Private Ryan, but either way, this is a very good list. Seeing my favorite actor of all time at number one was awesome.
Tom Hanks didn't win for SPR
Agreed! A fair number of people think he was a bad choice of winner, but I thought he was just downright brilliant; he deserved that oscar entirely.
Nice work! I couldn't take my eyes of the video! I enjoyed it. Thanks!
Vito Corleone looks so badass with the music.
AL PACINO in Scent of a Woman should have been icluded
He should won for the Godfather and Scarface, not for Scent of a Woman.
Definitely not
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
I loved your usage of Road to Perdition's theme. Really brought the emotions out of me :')
This is one of my very favorite movie scores of all time. Thomas Newman should have won the Oscar for the Scores of Road to Perdition and The Shawshank Redemption.
Who is a music in 5:08 please ?
hey man 0:51,what music is this? kind a love it,please man let me know
nice list!! :) similar to mine... but my n.1 is Sir Anthony Hopkins in TSOTL :)
I disagree with some picks, but yea #1 is right.
Uhhh.... have you seen Adrien Brody in The Pianist?
Road to Perdition (Title Theme)---Thomas Newman
Where is Murray Abraham as Antonio Salieri ?
there you go :) +1!!
Al pacino - scent of a woman, nowhere ?????????????
What is the name of the chorus and song at the end?
dennis arata I want to know too, have you found it?
Yes, i did, its Creep by Radiohead.
Thanks a lot!
And the movie is The Social Network, in case you're interested.
Awesome list! Amazing work! You earned a new suscriber!
Could you please tell me what is the name of the music that starts at 5:10?
well done. would've liked to see more speaking scenes (but i understand if copyright and length is an issue)
You missed Al Pacino in scent of a woman
This is his list, not ours
great work
JasonMovieGuy
Thanks buddy!
What is the melody that starts at minute 5:11? thanks
Where is Forest Whitaker for Last King of Scotland?
Does anyone know the name of the first song being played in this video?
The choice for no.1 was spot on !!! good list........
Is Jean Dujardin (The Artist) or Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) now included in this group?
A good list. Just wondering what logic you used to filter the top actors on this list. There are so many great ones.
if dustin had won for midnight cowboy, in what place you put him? please answer
great list JasonMovieGuy but i would take off a few like tom hanks in forrest gump and replace it with his performance in philadelphia. also, u missed al pacino in scent of a woman, maximillian schell in judgement at nuremberg, and basically everything day lewis is in. but great video, indeed. can't wait for the 25 actresses.
Awesome video! I was a bit disappointed to see Alec Guinness missing, but we can't always get what we want.
Nice video bro pls add more of this I enjoyed it.
INCREDIBLE LIST!!
18 minutes Anthony Hopkins was onscreen for 118/minutes. This is not to. Say he didn’t deserve it. I am saying he delivered the most memorable performance in just 18 minutes.
Very well done!
Great list, finally someone who appreciates how fantastic Denzel was in Training Day (easily one of of the best cop films along with The French Connection). Tom Hanks is a top 10 actor, not a top 5.
What!?!?!?!? Tom Hanks is an AMAZING actor!!!
You don't have to be rude : ( It is just my opinion. And saying man with a woman doesn't sound right, lol. Still, you are right about that. Maybe I love Tom Hanks so much that I overreacted... Sorry!
Sorry... I just said that because I do not like one word you said. I didn't intend o make it sound that way...
What is the name of that song near the beginning of the list? What a beautiful song!
Can you give me a list with the music pieces please?
DOES ANYBODY ON RUclips KNOW THE NAME OF THE LAST SONG. IF SO, PLEASE REPLY IT TO ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANKS.
what is the song used near the end of the list?
What is the different song of the video ?
No DDL for My Left Foot? Surely you must be joking
F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus?
Should be in the top ten for sure!
What are the names of the songs in the background? They are so captivating!
1.Al Pacino
2.Robert De Niro
3.Marlon Brando
4.Anthony Hopkins
5.Jack Nicolson
Such a well crafted video and such a grest list
what about heth ledger
he won supporting.
What was the last bit of music
al pacino in scent of a woman number one
Would anybody happen to know to know the movie to which the beginning scene belongs? For what its worth, any help would be greatly appreciated!
which songs are at 4:07 and 5:10?
Al Pacino is The best !!!
This is about as perfect as a RUclips Video can get!!!
I love jack nicholson's performance in one flew over the cuckoo's nest he is so great
That might be my number one pick. Although I am not a fan of New Hollywood movies "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is by far my favorite movie of the era, and easily one of my top ten, maybe even top five favorite movies of all time.
What is the music at the end?
Great list of actors 👌👏👍
