I don't know if you already found this but the origin of the instant kill soap is one play tester for dusk found a bug where the soap bar did 9000 damage in response the devs "fixed" (buffed) it but making it do 1,000,000 damage "because it's funny"
DUSK had a lot of importance to me, but for a different reason. Up until 2-3 years ago, i only played stuff like mobile gacha games and occasionally Minecraft. Then one day i was watching videos about throwback shooters and the trailer for DUSK appeared in my feed. Some days later i bought the game and shook off the dust from my crappy 7 year old laptop computer to play it. I was instantly impressed, cuz i never saw a game like that. In a lot of ways, Dusk was my gateway to PC gaming, And it was what made me have interest in the fps genre. -edit cuz spelling mistakes
I like how there is a bar of soap in the final level, but you *_can't_* take it with you through the portal to final boss. I wonder if soap could kill Nyarlathotep if you were able to take it with you.
I mean, it deals 1 million damage, higher than any Boss' health in the game, so it could one shot him,but the same ending still plays, but lore wise, I think he restricted the soap because it really can kill Nyarlathotep
Don't often comment, but you deserve more subs, I just watched like three of your videos in a row and sat entertained and content through all of them. Keep up the good work, you're going places, I guarantee it.
I got all 30 achievements six days ago! Dusk is amazing! The mutual names of the enemies of the Mama and the twins are called Cowgirls which I can tell are modeled after the Iron Maidens from Quake 2. The bulky flamethrower dudes are called Welders which make me think of a cross between the Mancubi from Doom and the Enforcers from the original Quake. The Wendigos are a inspiration throwback from the pinky's and specters from Doom and the Fiends from the original Quake!
Hell yeah man WORTHY! Yeah the enemies are practically dripping references, I love them. I can't wait for this game to come to Switch so I have another excuse to review it 😂
The enforcers and the soldiers are very obviously meant to be analogous to the enforcers and grunts respectively from quake. Episode 2’s first episode made that very clear.
binge watching ur stuff rn bc i cant sleep and holy shit you deserve so much more attention dude. every video of yours is solidly edited and written. you have million dollar quality with less than 1000 subs and ots bullshit. i hope you blow up soon dude ❤️ you deserve it. thank you for the great content!!
Dude that is that nicest comment I've ever gotten, thank you so much! The channel is still very young and growing steady and if awesome people like you are watching then I'm gonna keep pumping videos out. Also I hope you got some sleep, nothing worse than insomnia.
Have to say Kirk, nothing more engaging than hearing a fellow gamer who grew up about the same time period, talking about alllllll those games we fell in love with - somewhere in the depths of my icy heart, your enthusiasm and sincerity found a way to get a thaw going. Many thanks for covering this game man, and a bigger thank you for hoisting the flag of 90's shooters - you, sir, rock 👍🍻
I just finished this game, I’m extremely happy with DUSK, retro FPS shooters are not appreciated enough, I can’t wait to get onto Project Warlock. We need more throwbacks
Dusk has some really good horror moments that I love, I still remember being in the Cutty Caves and hearing the idle sounds of the Chainsaw guys, searched a bit but can't find them until I was able to follow the sound to a wall, crawled up close to verify the location of the sound with my headphones until BAM! The dudes burst out the wall, scared the hell out of me but I got a good chuckle out of it.
This looks like a mash-up of the original Alone in the Dark and Blood/Quake. Looks like something I could get into 😈 Cheers for the quality presentation and very easy listening 👍
I actually enjoy the battles because some of them are actually things you'd never see coming, most obviously Big John is the most unexpected, and downright out of place for me(I'm a newbie in the Quake like genre), but all the basic monsters turned bosses or vice versa serve the same experience as the ambush encounters for me I think it's like a homage to Quake when they introduce a strong enemy type at the end of each episode or level that you'll be encountering next time Edit: My favorite bods is the Guardian, it keeps you on your toes and you heart pumping as you time the Riveter right and dodge around corners, my favorite level is Erebus Reactor because it taught me the game's version of Bhopping, and I ended up syncing my movements to the music like in the trailer
It is cool as an adult getting a feeling of nostalgia playing this. Well, it isn’t completely a great story but a bittersweet end. I played this game for the first time 3 years ago on my way to see a close family friend for the last time (I didn’t know). Shortly after, she passed away. Now, I play it only when I know some life impacting memory will happen. I played it a year after when I had downtime on a very fun vacation. Now, My son was just born and I’ve been playing it at the hospital getting a warm and fuzzy feeling from it. It is a game I always want to play to tie it in a good memory with. Strange enough when you are offing cultists and lovecraftian monsters. It is an amazing game.
And let's not forget the music by Andrew Hulshult. It's so great. From silent ambient background to heavy and powerful guitar. I literally waiting for the ambushes just for the music to hit and it gave me such a big amount of *DOPAMINE.*
I only heard of this game when Limited Run announced a physical version on pre-order last month. I immediately liked the classic blocky aspect to it and the horror theme that surrounds it is probably the games best selling point to me. Not enough games dive into the often underrated horror/Halloween themes, its one of the reasons I like older FPS games that center around that like Escape from Monster Manor and Killing Time. This game, however, looks 100x better than those two I mentioned even though the other two are still plenty of fun. The action is there, the horror theme takes center stage, the weapons look absolutely brutal and the best part? It takes absolutely 0% of itself seriously! A bar of soap is the most powerful "weapon" the game has for crying out loud, and its glorious! Needless to say, I pre-ordered the physical Switch version today alongside the new Quake remaster. I cannot wait to play this one, Dusk honestly is one of those old-school styled FPS games that's about as underrated as Shadow Warrior. If we're lucky, maybe Hexen will get a Switch port one of these days.
Funny you should mention that! I’m planning on covering the Switch version when it drops this week. Very excited to play it. Thanks for watching Damien!
D.U.S.K. also draws some inspirado from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (at least the Facilities chapter). The flip ability might be an homage to 'PO'ed'. 2:26 Most games misidentify assault rifles as machine guns. This game misidentifies a machine gun as an assault rifle. Granted, you use it like an assault rifle, not a machine gun, but this isn't Red Orchestra 2. 8:42 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. influence 15:58 Reminiscent of the Nihilanth battle at the end of Half-Life.
11:49 this comment that you made is interesting because i remember listening to an interview with David and him saying that he remember Mist very fondly
"There's not much different between the goats, the chainsaw guys, and the scientists" - For starters, the goats have a ranged spitting attack. Secondly, the scientists cut your health in half.
"Unreal Tournament was my introduction to 1st Person Shooters" .....That is pretty fucking rad. Unreal Tournament was a fantastic game. I remember those had to be some of the best LAN parties ever. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena were some of the awesome shooters of the early 2000's. Wolfenstein 3D was my intro to FPS's but UT had some of my favorite memories.
I'm on the older side, just turned 51 so the classic shooters are some of my favorites but my childhood goes back to the arcades and consoles like the Atari 2600 and Colecovision. That being said, Dusk is easily a top 10 shooter of all time and I loved this game so much. Being able to hop around, somersault in midair while dual wielding shotguns and blasting possessed blood spitting cows in the face while Andrew Hulshult's amazing sound track plays is simply fantastic.
funny enough unreal tournament was also my first shooter, also burned but by my uncle on cdr...and i agree that the buttery yet snappy gameplay in dusk (and ultrakill) is just like in these games and what i missed trying my hands on modern shooters
The story behind the soap is actually not that deep but still pretty funny. If I remember correctly, David Szymanski mentioned in his dev playthrough of DUSK on New Blood's channel that after adding the soap's bubble effect, he wanted the soap to actually do something interesting since it now stood out compared to other objects, so he gave it a damage value of 1 million just for shits and giggles.
You know, when I played DUSK I had the feel like soldiers and scientists have at least some other A.I. strategy than others. Let me explain, almost every time I damage scientist in cramped room, he runs behind a corner and catches me when I try to catch up with him. And soldiers... They just walk a little, I guess?
To everyone who wants something that's kinda like Dusk but just better; Play Brutal Doom, or Project Brutality. They have all these throwable objects scattered all over the map, and have an arsenal that's just as fun to use as Dusk's. And the enemy designs of these mods are so insanely good. Plus these mods add reloading to your weapons, which adds to the tactical aspect of it. And if you don't wanna replay the same old Doom map all over again, try a custom WAD in Brutal Doom, such as Alien Vendetta or Akeldama. Or even Hellbound, that's a really good Doom 2 WAD which works especially well in Brutal Doom.
I found having the most fun in the first episode. The later two were too intense and/or scary. I had to take an hour after each level to calm down and stretch.
I have such a hard time figuring out if I liked dusk or amid evil more. Amid evil was definitely more my jam musically and visually, but I feel like the weapons and combat feel of dusk was more intense and enjoyable.

I really didn't play many shooters in the 90s, actually I only played Doom, in PC, SNES and PSOne. I also played Heretic† and Doom II. I played a little bit of Quake (and the remaster recently) and Duke Nukem† and I think that's all. It's only recently when I have tried the genre seriously, both old and retro games (Doom 64, Blood†, Ziggurat†), as well as some modern releases (Doom 2016, Metro 1 and 2). I started playing Dusk some time ago but got destroyed in the very first room, I tried several times and I got the same results. I then changed difficulty (what the devs mistakenly call accessibility) to easier and I almost got wiped but managed to survive. Then I got stuck in the Guardian boss fight for months, even on the easiest difficulty. Am I stupid (I don't think so, I have finished all the aforementioned games in normal, except those marked with a dagger)? Is the game insanely hard? Or it's just I'm not used to WASD+Mouse? This video inspired me to try again and finally I killed the Guardian.
My only problem with DUSK is that it's not on Playstation or XBox. This ain't a problem for me since i don't have those, but a good friend of mine exclusively plays on Playstation, which means he can't experience this masterpiece for himself. While Dusk is definitely a good game, I don't see anything that makes it great. Quake had better levels and some more interesting enemies and it came out 20 years earlier. Gameplay wise, nothing really new here either.
As much as a love the Doom II super shotgun, there is a better weapon: the fully upgraded super shotgun from Doom (2016). You know I'm right! Also, am I the only one who loves the Water Temple? Seriously, if you hate it but have only played it on the original N64 version or it's direct ports, try it on the 3DS. The Iron Boots are now a C-button item instead of equipment. That and the floor you are on are always shown on the bottom screen.
Great vid! WORHY \o/
Thank you so much! I had some legendary material to work with. Thank you for making Dusk, can’t wait to get my hands on that Switch version 🤘🤘

"Because it's funny" is the reason behind the best stuff.
And this is why I love small game developers
Sure but the sawblade bounces on walls and instakills as well :)
Every time I try to kill my enemies with soap it doesn’t work. Maybe I just have bad aim with it
This reminds me that the developers for these games are insane
As a lovecraft fan, it brings me great joy to see a game use a lovecraft deity that ISN'T Cthulhu as the final boss
A lot more fitting, too, considering Nyarlathotep is one of the only deities that actively screws with humans
Then you might like Persona 2 as well.
It may not be Cthulu, but has just as many tentacles and almost definitely a better voice actor.
Would love if he was in the game as well. Not complaining tho
I love the deity that teaches me that interracial relationships are dangerous
“The nine inch nails quake” I love that
Yep. Quake 2 did have a good atmosphere, but Quake 1 was definitely the best.

I only heard of this game when Limited Run announced a physical version on pre-order last month. I love the experiment boss battles because the game says "Good job on defeating that boss! You sure put a lot of work into it. *_do it again"_*
Dusk is truly special.

Same!
Awesome video.
Definitely need to give Ion Fury a go, if you liked the glory days of the Build Engine, it's one you simply can not miss.

I'm trying to figure out which to get, Dusk or Ultrakill, which is better for that epic satisfying action?
I'm on the older side, just turned 51 so the classic shooters are some of my favorites but my childhood goes back to the arcades and consoles like the Atari 2600 and Colecovision. What is the name of the songs at the beginning and at the end?
I would truly love to try Dusk, but I'm a console dude. Maybe someday.
To everyone who wants something that's kinda like Dusk but just better; Play Brutal Doom, or Project Brutality. Love the Zelda reference 👌
Dusk is a great game, a pity they did not include the flare gun from Blood though, that was a fun weapon when combined with monks
For some reason I only got 3 bosses in episode 1. Do you know why?
I found having the most fun in the first episode. The later two were too intense and/or scary. I had to take an hour after each level to calm down and stretch.
And finally it’s out on switch ❤️❤️❤️🎃
I loved this game.
Dusk Dude, huh. I like it
I have such a hard time figuring out if I liked dusk or amid evil more. Amid evil was definitely more my jam musically and visually, but I feel like the weapons and combat feel of dusk was more intense and enjoyable.
I realllllllllllyyyyyyyy like this game. Never played it though.
Oh no! I hope you get to play it soon.
I thought "The Duke Boys" was a Dukes of Hazzard reference
I don’t know if someone has already mentioned this but the Duke brothers are a multi-layered reference. They could be a reference to Doom, like you mentioned, but also the Dukes of hazard and also David Duke, one time Grand Wizard of the KKK. (KKK titles are hilarious, if you ever want a laugh go read the KKK wiki, the titles sound like something from a DND campaign.
I assumed the soap was a reference to an early physics glitch and they left it as an easter egg/joke?
The goats also shoot extremely fast projectiles at you and are very frail making them an unique enemy and very different from the chainsaw guya and the scientists.
It looks good
is it a modern fps classic or is it a classic fps modern?
Doom Eternal and Dusk are my favorite FPS games.

imagine it geting a remake in like 2023 or somthing
Dusk rocks!

My only problem with DUSK is that it's not on Playstation or XBox.
