3D Printing a D-O Droid Tyre using High Speed TPU

  • I got a new 3D printer the Lulzbot Workhorse and I thought I should test it out with some new filament by Polymaker. The filament is a high speed version of PolyFlex TPU that I use to make my Giant Scale Lego tyres and D-O's tyre. TPU parts are sometimes difficult to print and time consuming so I hope this new material works well as it could save me a heap of time with my Giant Lego projects. Print Profile Settings Below!

    Wouldn't an actual rubber be better for a tire? Like Casting something?

    • @MattDenton
      @MattDenton  3 года назад +1

      Not in this case as I want the tyre to collapse so that D-O actually drives on the rims.

    It would seam like 3D printers is getting so good so they soon are pretty much plug and play.. Maybe just a year or so away from just scaning the barcode of the print material and the printer is configured.

    What's the advantage of a belt drive Z axis vs a leadscew?

    • @MattDenton
      @MattDenton  3 года назад +1

      Good point.. well it moves faster.... but otherwise I'm not sure, I think you get better print quality, plus it can auto calibrate its own Z height between each side of the printer.

    • @nathan1sixteen
      @nathan1sixteen 3 года назад

      @@MattDenton I get the speed aspect, but I've never really had a situation where I needed my Z-Axis be super fast, especially during a print.
      You can do autocalibration with leadscrews.
      I don't know about the print quality, but I feel like you'd lose resolution with a belt system over leadscrews. Maybe it prevents things like z-banding, which you can get with a slightly misaligned leadscrew?
      Anyways, I've seen a few "high end" printers move to the z-belt system, so there must be something to it

      @@nathan1sixteen It also helps to eliminate backlash.

      Belted z eliminates z wobble print defects induced by bent lead screws, couplers, misalignment etc.

    • @nathan1sixteen
      @nathan1sixteen 3 года назад +1

      @@jim2386 that's what I figured, but at the same time, I feel like you lose resolution due to the limitation of stepper motor accuracy in baby stepping and all
