Droid Build D-O - #1 - Mantis Hacks
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 окт 2019
- This is the first video in my D-0 droid build based on Michael Baddeley's CAD designs! D-O is the new droid on the block in the Star Wars universe and I thought it would be fun to build one. Michael already had a design available that he kindly sent to me, but I'm making a few tweaks of my own, including upgraded servos, drive system and electronics! This should be a three or four part series and I hope to have the droid finished before The Rise Of Skywalker is released! (Materials/Parts/Printers listed below)
There will be more information on the accompanying facebook page that will be hosted by myself and Lee Toweresy: / dobuilders

That is some seriously delicious engineering going on here.
Oh thanks 🙏
As he makes his Roada Roller Da!
You thought you were designing a new Droid but it was DIO all along!
IT WAS I, DIO
Hey man, we missed you at Celebration Anaheim! Of course, maybe you were there and it was just me who missed out!
Thanks. Yeah we were due to go, but got cancelled last minute:(
Awesome to see you working with the fellow droid builders and bringing your knowledge in. The information you gave was very helpful and easy to understand. I hope we get to see more of this! Thank you and best of luck with your build!
Thanks 🙏 appreciated :)
Kono D/O Da
Wow, this is crazy cool Matt!! Love to see and hear the logic behind your designs. I’ll have to check out the rest of your videos. Also I have to comment on the concise info and how you don’t waste the viewers time at all. Thanks for your effort in making these!!
Thanks.. I think I waffle too much.. then cut chunks out 😂
KONO D-O DA !
An excellent video - Thanks Matt.
I’m designing/building a BB8 from scratch, so seeing what components others are using for similar builds is especially useful. Thanks for the links!
You’re welcome 👍appreciate the feedback.
Incredible Matt!!! Absolutely stunning work. I'm Arduino enthusiast and building basic moving object with my boys but this is in a completely different universe!!!
Oh thanks 🙏
RUclips really needs to add an option to invert the playlist. For these ones you have it really is better to have the new episode at the top. But i'm trying to watch these in chronological order from the start and. Well. It's a bit annoying to have to manually select the next one.
KONO DIO DA!!!
amazing stuff. thanks for going through all the design points. im amazed the flexible filament printed ok with a single wall
Thanks 🙏
Great project, looking forward to the coming episodes!
Thanks.. should be soon I don’t have much time 😬
WOW Matt, outstanding work. Inspirational as always =)
Thanks 🙏
Really cool ! Keep up the good work Matt
Thanks 🙏
Awesome - I need the next one now
Coming soon
This is top quality engineering content, can't believe I haven't been recommended this by RUclips before (I've seen you in a couple of James Bruton videos, so I guess I'll also have to blame myself for not checking it out sooner). Looking forward to catch up on your videos both in this series and others!
Thank you 🙏
Looking great so far Matt.
Thanks 🙏
Nice work Matt.
Great job, thanks for show us your work
You’re welcome.. thanks for the feedback 😬
Love this, great video and fascinating topic. And who better to be walking us through the practicalities of droid building
Thanks 🙏
Awesome Matt, will definitely follow this for mine so I can take to the next celebration
👍👍👍
WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
😑?
What?
For those who are really confused, there's a character from a really popular show named dio who said wryyyyyy once.
😆
Thank you ❤️ I’ll make mine in a few days
Cool project! Loved this droid. I saw some LSS there... I also have a few, just thinking about something to build with them. Looking forward to see this droid running around!
Thanks 🙏
Awesome to see that in Alibre!
Wow I’m impressed
Thanks 🙏
Very cool video! I'm currently working on a drive for nurse droid from the game "droid repair bay". Very inspiring to see you design you own droid!
Thanks 🙏 appreciate the feedback
This is excellent!
Thanks 🙏
Zawarudo!! Stop time!
Damnit, this is really mindbending in so many ways...
Seeing one of the people that actually worked on the movie & stage prop re-do the robot based on a design from the outside community because the design made for the studio obviously is under nda...
It really shows that you made your hobby your job!
Looking forward to seeing how you implement the steering & stabilization with some proper control-loops!
Could you maybe also give some explanation in some later video on how much you paid (material cost) for the parts?
You usually tend to go for more 'professional' approaches on many parts which are interesting decisions to learn from.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes there will be a Facebook page/group that will host the information and files along with a BOM and cots etc..
Nice job! 👍
Thanks 🙏
Cool project
Thanks 🙏
How can I have mine stop time or yell “WWWWRRRRYYYYY!” ?
James Bruton, you have matured a bit--finally!
😂😂😂... 😕
Matt this is great!! Really looking forward to your build log and building this. Where do you find the time LOL? I'm glad you do eek out time for followers of your work.
Thanks 🙏 well I’m not working at the moment 😬
cool
Nice work, perhaps i'll make one after making my BB-8.
Thanks 🙏
Whoa.... That's a lot of screws for the drive motor....
"It was me! D-O"
😆
Good
Im working on my own right now. My solution for the tire was to have it slightly smaller and its center of rotation slightly higher than the side wheels. This way the top of the tire lines up as yours does, and looks correct when viewed from kneeling or standing, but the bottom doesn't touch the ground. This way I can print it in hard plastic as I assumed that it would be hard to paint/weather a flexible (i've zero experience with flexible filaments, so that lack of knowledge also lead me down this path
Hi. Yes I did have a simple thought with raising the rotation point, but I wanted to make sure the tyre turned when moving forward without having to have it driven.. I have no experience with weathering flexible plastics either 🤞
@@MattDenton yeah. Mine needs a 3rd motor. But in the up side, I'll be able to moonwalk ;)
@@MattDenton The other concern I had with a flexible tire was that when it squishes in it will want to spread out, and bind with the rims...but if you have it secured to the hard core it may be OK. Can't wait to see part 2!
Like it
Thanks 🙏
Amazing to see him build an “outsider’s” design! If you like this, definitely have a listen to tested.com’s still untitled podcast episode about matt’s involvement in building droids!
Thanks! I have to build an outsiders design... 😬
Matt Denton Yes you explained perfectly in the video!
I am curious, did you in fact already finish this build and are you now doing the editing on the videos. Or is it still in-progress? (Maybe I could do suggestions on the design)
Yeah but can it turn itself and others into dinosaurs like the true DIO?
obama premium nah man that’s diego
@@justsomeguyintheinternetbo2469 basically the same thing
WRRREEEEAAAH
Matt, great work! Just watched the full series of videos. In several of the shots, there is what appears to be a Lego bulldozer over your left shoulder. What kit number is that?
Thanks. I can’t remember the number.. it was a big kit from about 18 years back.
Nice build! Looks quite packed inside.
Why didn't you use conical bearings for the wheels, to avoid the sideways jiggle?
You mean angular contact bearings... not sure I’d have the space.
Where do you get your thin bearings from? Everywhere i've seen them they are VERY expensive ($100s)
There’s a link to all parts in the description and the cost about £6 each 👍
Great work Matt, will you be releasing your iteration?
Hi, yes I will When I’m happy with it
are there any electronics that you recommend for someone on a budget
You said that you worked in the movie? Also if you don't mind me asking, what did you study to be able to design and create these projects?
My background is electronics and software engineering.. and some mechanical engineering.
The minute I have free time, I know what I'm doing
Cool 👍
nice to see some more engineering type videos :D is there any change we get to see more of the mantis build once this is done? :D
Hmm. I’ve probably got loads of old B roll from the Mantis.. but we didn’t film much making of.. I was too busy trying to get it done 😂.. however.. have some interesting Mantis news coming up very soon!
@@MattDenton nice! did you ever end up fitting the gripper to it?
Well I’m moving Mantis to a new home.. and I hope that the gripper will be one of the project I could finally finish! 👍
The problem with those video is they just don’t get many views.. although I enjoy the projects :)
@@MattDenton will you have more space to work on it with that move? and the few views are odd i though a lot of people would like those videos :/ at least i will be looking out for the mantis videos :D keep up the good work!
Ever considered making a full scale IG-11?
No.. but sounds like fun 😬
Or an IG 88
Jojo bizarre adventure fans need to raid this
😆
what 3d printer and material is that?
Should all be listed in the comments section
Kono Dio da
Does it have a squeaky wheel?
Probably 😆
What is the software name that you use to draw
Alibre design
Matt Denton
Thank you
wouldn't batteries be better as a balast?
They are below COG, but wouldn’t fit any lower
Can someone please briefly explain how the thing steers/turns? I can't see how it can do that. Thank you!
I think there’s an explanation in there somewhere... I’m sure I talked about it. But next episode will have some drives moving so will be easier o explan
@@MattDenton I must have missed that, sorry! Thank you for your reply.
from what I understood was. The whole robot runs along the green outer hubs/ rims. The tire is almost for show. both hubs run independently from each other much like a tracked vehicle, slow down or stop the left side and it it will turn that way. Actually @Matt Denton. the green rims that it runs along. what material are you printing them in?
@@oddjobkia Thank you!
Haha! Saw 2yrs ago, thought that said 2days! . Never mind! You’ll never see this!
Hello i would to know if you have one for sell ? Thank you 🙏
No sorry
Holy krup is that a jojo reference?
SUPER CALA
Wait, you worked on the film?? 😂
Yes. Which is why I’m modifying existing fan files. I can’t use any information or data that I may or may not have. 👍
Matt Denton Hahahah that’d be SO HARD to know how it works and not be able to just make the exact replica. contracts are the worst. After the film comes out it’d be awesome to hear your experience working on it
Yes.. yes it is!! 😂 but it’s still fun and I think this is a nice build 👍
James Brunton wants to know your location.
He knows where I am :)
Hello @Matt Denton. Can you please contact me? Thanks in advance.
Very nice - take a look at my chanel i have build a rotten pit droid and a rotten R2D2
Is that a Jojo reference?
Not sure...
@@MattDenton I bet you're tired of the Jojokes
No you're the first 👍
@@MattDenton I don't know if I should feel honored or wildly surprised.
😆
This useless droid (useless like the whole movie) is named D-O, and in italian is pronounced DI O, like dio (it means god): this explain why this junk droid is useless :D
Hahajahahja good one🙄 I agree with the did bit 😆
