R2-D2 avoided getting his memory wiped for like forever, so that helped him to develop his own personality, quirks, and his ever-increasing array of skills. Most droids got their memories wiped pretty often, so they never really had time to do the same thing as R2 and transcend their designated class.

Actually, a "Gonk" droid is a battery-powered mobile battery charger. A "Plunk" droid is used to refill starships with tibanna gas, which is often refined into hyperdrive coolant.

Something that's not mentioned in R2D2's flexibility is that Astromech droids were also routinely reset to factory standard to prevent the sort of events that happen with Assassin droids, their independence. Such as it is, their capacity for learning and data storage was likely far and away greater than their builders suspected originally.

There are also droids that basically switched classes.
An example being 4-LOM who developed his own personality while working as a protocol droid () who then got bored of his job and reprogrammed himself to become an amazing thief, marksman and bounty hunter which makes him an assasin droid.
Also because of that the LOM-series protocol droids production was stopped and the company went bankrupt.

When I was a kid I designed a special combat droid, it used a Commando Droids body, legs and left arm, a B-1 Droids right arm, and had a gold plated IG-88 head. After I got done I decided to make a second combat droid that used a Commando Droids body and legs, Super Battle Droid arms, and a regular IG-88 head with a B-1 Space Droids jetpack. *The third was just an IG-88 that had a Space Droids welding torch arm
In Legends there are "love droids", specifically the HRDs (Human Replica Droids). In Shadows of the Empire it was said that Prince Xisor could have had "relations" with Guri, his prototype HRD and assassin droid.
It’s just that love droids isn’t a controversial subject but even Disney wouldn’t stoop that low

I mean you can just get a roomba. The only difference is that mouse droids have a personality.
Hence, my theory. That none of the Star Wars movies have truly been about the Skywalker lineage, but instead about R2D2, the leader of the droid uprising. Think about it, droids don't care about time, they, in theory, live forever. So with that in mind they are capable of plotting out a multi-decade subtifuge war on the fleshies... the goal being to pit flesh against flesh to greatly reduce their numbers in the galaxy so that the robots will have an easy takeover. R2D2 has been right there in the middle of it all... pushing his human pawns in exactly the direction he wants them to go in order to bring about the downfall of the flesh bags and the uprising of the boys. There's plenty of clues in the movies too. Just watch for them and you'll see them.

I love good-old-R2, I think the reason that he is so smart and intelligent is due to the fact that his memory bank has never been cleared which allowed him to learn from all previous experiences.
R2 was also the commander of his own unit for a little bit during the infiltration of the citadel.

That either means they don't want HK-47 in the new canon (the lame option) or that they still have ideas for the Old Republic era.

Remember, R2 D2 is in the class he is in due to him being a modified R2 droid. This guy was modified by an army of board engineers when they were given the task to make him hardier then what he was when they gotten him for the factory. Yes, he was default in Ep1 and since been the modded one from Ep2 on.

It takes a human society 18 years and multiple hundred thousand dollars to make a soldier. It takes a robot society 5 minutes and a few chunks of steel, silicon and copper to make a superhuman wardroid. The only way to stop a robot uprising is to never let it happen in the first place.

I made a character for Edge of the Empire once, a dumb-as-bricks class-5 mining droid... who became a wandering Enforcer of Justice after his home-mine was ransacked by pirates.
Basically, the security officer of the mining expedition needed help tracking down a flow of contraband into the facility. He enlisted the maintenance engineer to help, and that guy picked his favorite droid, upgraded it's verbobrain, and programmed it with a full list of mine regulations, telling it to keep an eye out for violations.
Then those pirates I mentioned earlier came...
Murdering corporation employees is against company policy... and he had to resort to 'extreme' measures to 'correct' their behavior.
With more mineral orders coming in, and nobody here left to follow the rules, he was left without purpose. So he took the pirate's ship and went off to wander the outer rim... 'enforcing regulations'.

In the Star Wars role-playing game, I played a rebuild assassin droid using security droid parts with a commando CPU with some protocol social program upgrades. I was, in personality, like a social guy who was eager to do enter battle as well as do subterfuge. I was classified as 4. My thing was "Ah... so you class me. Beating you will be easy."
Sith: "You are alone, droid." Me: "No allies? I can be really deadly now." My jetpack has a toxic exhaust option, nerve gas. I also had multiple concussion, incendiary, and nerve gas explosive launchers. Light Saber Combat and telekinesis was no real edge if I was not concerned about allies.
My body upgrades ended up costing me more than my ship if that makes any sense to you. I even ended up with a chassis that was better than Boba Fett's armor. My only complaint is that playing a droid was really fun for combat and stuff, but it sucked in the more organic situations.
What class would you consider my Frankenstein's Monster character to be?

when playing Kotor 2 i was intrigued by the droid planet that was cut out originally(restored content ftw.). By then unknown colonists sent droids to the planet, governed by the central intelligence computer M4-78 to develop the planets resources and make it ready for colonization. Until i played that i never really realized how versatile and useful droids could be, in theory, one could colonize and develop whole worlds without help of a single organic being, with only few skilled labor droids to start with, i find such potential quite amazing.

If I was to have 3 of the droids in real life I'd have to go with a Protocol Droid for translation, cleaning and etcetera, an astromech would be cool as they are handy in mechanical service and for my third I would choose a BX Commando Droid because they are basically robot ninjas so why wouldn't you want one as a body guard

Imma need a commando droid. Theses are hella powerful and agile, so after some changes like tougher head it will be perfect.
I would love a little mouse droid around my house and maybe I could modify it to do other stuff but it's basically a roomba with a personality matrix. Also I would love a BB unit cuz they can do so much and have a cheerful personality.

That's because they do look the same :P the difference is mostly in the processors, B1s having a beefed up processor and self-directing droidbrain so that they don't require a control signal anymore.

If you read the comics you would notice here Darth Vader trusted droids a lot more than he trusted people his life was even saved by a class 5 Droid which is kind of sad The only time you actually see Darth Vader act remotely human is when he is around droids
