During COVID in my last year of nursing school my university assigned us 6months at a nursing home. The facility was run down conditions were horrible staff was neglectful. Most residents hadn’t had a family visit in years! It made me fear old age. This program is amazing!
@@ConKhiMyDenYou may be right😢 For just over a year my daddy shared a room with a gentleman who, to me, was a real sweetheart. No one ever visited him until two days before his death. I obviously don't know the full story of what kept the family members from visiting, but it still made me sad.
Nursing homes have made me fear old age too 😢 There are a lot of loving, dedicated people that work in these facilities, but those that are neglectful seem to outnumber the good. It just breaks my heart.
A great idea for the old and young generations learning from each other. The distance from college and assistive living is close and convenient. Win, win situation.
The male student is like, "I only pay $400 a month and I get nice digs and nice people? It's the deal of the century." It's also a genius idea of the director to generate a source of funds for the facility. With 10 students, the facility generates $4,000 a month, win win.
@@tablescissors I think the volunteering hours would put anyone off from staying in this place as a student if they had bad intentions and no desire to be part of the community because there are expectations placed upon anyone who wants to live there.
We have a program in my home town, but it is the other end of the spectrum….We have kindergarten at our nursing home, all the kiddos call the residents “grandma & grandpa” it’s the most precious bond❤❤❤❤
College kids also need a dose of reality and some experienced wisdom. Elders often can provide such things that you are unlikely to find in fellow students.
The college kids are getting much more than housing. They are learning about real life. These seniors are the best teachers. The students are actually becoming better people. By giving, they are receiving more than they could have ever imagined.
This is why having a culture of community is so important. They can learn from the residents wisdom and experience and the students with their youth and energy bring life back into the room.
This is such a lovely idea especially if you have students who don’t feel comfortable in a dorm with a lot of drinking/parties and enjoy spending time with older folks ❤
Wow! This is so great. Ppl are treated sooo badly at nursing homes. This is a way to keep seniors safer and to give young ppl the time, attention and knowledge they never got growing up. How can we spread this love around our country?
What a great idea! I wish more places would start this type of program...There is a lot we can learn from older generations, and for those that didn't grow up with grandparents, it's a way that those kids to know what that feels like!
I would love to see this as a full on college program with any higher education facilities near assisted living facilities. Not only would it enrichen the lives of the elderly residents, they would have other people looking out for them during their nursing care and they would be able to guide a future generation by sharing stories and advice. Doing scheduled activities is good for both, the seniors would have great things to look forward to along with students who would not have time for the kind of partying that would compromise their studies. Not to mention, it could disqualify them from the program. I think it'd be especially good for students going to medical schools and that could also be added safety for the seniors, as they would have some knowledge of what to do during medical emergencies. Also, it's just so wonderful to see all those smiles. Everyone looks so happy!
We moved a college student into my mother-in-law home, she bloomed and cooks' breakfast, makes her a lunch, and dinner. The student helps with the house and yard.
I wish this was going on when I was in college. I still miss my grandparents and great grandparents. This is ideal to have love, friendship, and support for everyone involved!
I’m so glad they tried this. I hope it works out favorably for all concerned. ❤ I think this is powerful in a way that requires no explanation and so I hope that turns out to be true.
MORE OF THIS!! What an amazing boost to mental health for all involved. This is how we care for our children and our elders. This needs to be a national, a worldwide thing!
Worked in long term care, this is so lovely. Unfortunately, there are never spare rooms for this here, just long lists of seniors waiting to get into homes.
I wrote a term paper in college on this subject thirty years ago. . I wrote about "latch key" kids being matched with "grandparents" in their building or neighborhoods. Everyone benefited in a great way from the working parents to the kids to the elderly neighbors and the families of the elderly neighbors. A beautiful circle of companionship and mentorship flowing back and forth.
Wow, this is amazing! What an amazing idea. This would make such a difference if this type of program was replicated in every town and city across the country.
I hope more places would this. It helps both side- Students will learn how to behave and respect other people who need some help and on the way The Eldery will have company who will keep their spirits up . Sadly i don't think this will happen in many places.
..brilliant...brilliant...BRILLIANT! ..more of this please...such a win-win..remember my uncle telling me, in the Netherlands, older folk would live on the ground floor and students in the floors above. Connections got made & students would look out for the older folk, getting them milk what have you...& vice versa. ❤ ✌🏽 (🇨🇦)
What a great idea! The elderly people feel happier being around the young people and feel a purpose in making sure they eat right and pass on valuable information and skills to the next generation and the young people grow to be more well rounded and may feel calmer with an older person looking out for them. For most of the students this is their first time living away from home and some get very anxious so having surrogate grandparents would alleviate this stress.
Oh this brings tears to my eyes! As a child I would walk to visit my Nana. Our home town was quaint and simpler than today's towns. After raising my children I worked with the elderly. Now I'm elderly and well taken care of and loved. This whole idea is phenomenal! Please students are learning a lifelong lesson of compassion and love for the elderly. They are learning the reward there is in giving to others. Congratulations.
This is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately, in Canada, seniors are on a long waiting list to get into these places. There just aren’t enough of these facilities available. 😕
KARE 11, thank you so much for your thoughtful, uplifting reporting. With your meaningful stories and caring crew, you stand out in TV Land. No thrill reporting, no botoxed presenters. Humanity and empathy. You are a wonderful, calm island amongst the hysteria.
I love love love this idea! What a brave Director to open her mind to new ideas!!! The elderly have so much wisdom and it is being lost in the shuffle of life. And the stories they can share❤
What a genius idea!! This Assisted Living Facility is so lucky to give this opportunity to such kind, caring, talented, & considerate college students! These students were raised to be compassionate towards others, no wonder they all love being there, learning from their Resident Friends, being of service, & experiencing the power of being useful to others! What a rich experience for everyone involved in this BRILLIANT IDEA!!!💕💕🤗
Wow what a wonderful idea!! I remember when I was a student in Wisconsin I did a lot of volunteer work at an elderly home. I loved it!! Even every time I got there I had to repeat my name and all the info and the people who lived there they did not recognized me at all, I didn't mind!! It was like a having my grandparents close to me and offering me chocolates or whatever they had in exchange of having those wonderful chats with them. I was feeling homesick and they we alone so that was the perfect equation to be in touch with people and felt love!!
Such a beautiful story, and such a wonderful program. There should be so many more of this type of living arrangement. Everyone wins! Can't get better than that!!
I think this is wonderful. I think seniors have so much to teach the younger, but don't get the credit for that. They are our elders that were here before us. They learned things that we have not yet. If we listened to them more our lives would be better.
Such a wonderful, lovely idea for everyone. I love this! The interactions will probably prolong the lives of seniors and certainly they are enriching the lives of each other. 🥰
How totally wonderful to see this I’ve always been close to older people for they have so much to share Great wisdom to glean from them Great idea to start this program You are a way maker to the rest of the nursing homes
