Just what I was looking for. After cutting mine the cords shot up inside the mechanism and I heard the horrific sound of springs unwinding . I took the blinds down removed the mechanisms, opened them and then rewound and resprang them. The process took over two hours. My other half then held the tension on all three cords while I restrang each slat. I promised I would find an easier way and ran across your video. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
Thank you for the easy to follow instructions and well thought out plan. Using your steps, I just shortened one at my house in 15 minutes with no problems. I used a pair of tin snips to cut my slats. Manufacturer did not include any guidance on how to shorten. You deserve a paycheck from the blind companies!
Super video. I just bought a cordless mini blind from ACHIM and it contained not only no instructions on how to hang and shorten them, but also no hardware. Fast forward 4 weeks later and two days ago I got the hardware but no instructions. I found a video on how to hang them so that part of life is done but now they need to be shortened. I've searched all morning and finally found this one. Now it's time to grab a cup of coffee, a chair, my tools, turn on some jams and get to work. Thank you again for the help. As for those 15 folks who voted it down and left ignorant comments, it's because they wish they had the intelligence and ability you have to be able to concur any problem that may come their way and then create a video to help others who have been in the same situation. I believe the internet refers to them as "trolls". ;-)

I bought 2 pairs of cordless blinds and they ended up in the garbage because there was no instructions on how to shorten them, I attempted to shorten them, as one would “before” they became “ cordless” needless to say that was a disaster. I bought a 3rd pair after seeing your video and followed your steps, wow 😮 success. You should be paid for your step by step guidance! This video saved my sanity! Thank you so much for doing this. I purchased Allen And Roth 2” blinds and when I tried to shorten them I undid the little black donut ring and zip went the pull cord right up into the head rail. After taking a few hours to calm down and several scotch on the rocks I duck taped the slats together and the next day took the mess back to Lowe’s. Gotta love Lowe’s......they gave me credit for a new pair. Now the new set is up and I’m terrified to attempt shortening them. After practically giving up and watching video after video I found you who had the same problem and frustration as me. The Allen and Roth directions gave no warning/directions on shortening these type of blinds. I hope they see your video! The only thing I did differently was instead of cutting the slats I just snapped them in half at the slit. Thank you again. BTW I’m sure you have been told you have those Susan Sarandon eyes.
I just did the same thing! I’m going to try to see if they will take them back. I bought them like 5 months ago and finally installed them! And completely messed them up!
Thank you for posting this video. I used your methodology on a cordless Levolor aluminum blind. Your attention to detail in producing the video made my job much easier. I was told by Levolor customer support that these blinds could not be shortened (thus no instructions for shortening in the box). You made it simple and I think Levolor needs to get their head out of the sand and see what creative folks, like yourself. are doing to prove them wrong. Thank you

IIRC the "old" Levolor design with the holes in the middle of the slats (not "trim+go") was pretty easy to shorten. Pop the plugs out the bottom, pull the lift cord up, slide out the slats, then thread the cords back thru the bottom. No need to destroy the slats. The new "trim+go" are maddening to shorten.
Very Helpful! I have the 2 inch Intercrown Cordless Blinds. I did not cut the center string, just as she did not either. Seemed to work so much nicer than other videos I've watched that did cut the center string. Took some time to figure out, but now it looks so much better! I feel like the name brand companies should have video demos of how to, but they do not.

Complete success. All done. I just followed your video and did it step by step. The hardest part was very carefully not cutting those 2 thicker cords and removing the un needed blinds. In this case I had to reduce a 6 foot long blind to 3 1/2 feet total. Once I got past that the rest was easy peasy
Just wanted to say thanks! Couldn't find any instructions myself for cordless blinds. I have a different brand so the string situation was slightly different, but it worked!
Wish I had seen this sooner, I paid nearly $90 for one blind, decided to shorten it and cut one of the cords that's tensioned for lifting and lowering of the blind, well as soon as I did that, the tensioned cord got "sucked" up into the main spring mechanism never to be seen again. It rendered my blind useless I was P.O'd for sure but learned a valuable lesson... ALWAYS research and don't assume you know what you're doing (unless you actually do)

I would not leave extra slats at the bottom; trying to tilt so many useless stacked slats stresses the angle mechanism at the top of the blinds. Over time the gears will strip up there and you lose your ability to tilt your slats. And who needs that! My bedroom installation whenever a previous renter or manager did not take off the excess slats- and I had to tug on my ladder string to assist angle adjustment. Removing the extra slats helps, but sometime the blinds still have trouble. Manager wanted to replace with another kind of blind, but they forgot about it. Nice thing is, they can't tell I fixed it.
15 years ago I custom cut a big group of the old style mini blinds to fit a 1964 Chris Craft Cabin Cruiser to the best of my knowledge the newer owners still are using all of them currently no instructions or RUclips videos just me rum and some cursing FYI boat windows are often triangular and tapered on multiple sides I wanted full privacy And got it

Wish I had watched your video first. I watched a different one in which the person cut the bottoms of the lift strings to remove the bottom rail. I did that, and the lift strings suddenly retracted into the header. What a nightmare trying to fix it. I don't think they'll ever raise and lower again. I'll have to be satisfied with just opening and closing the slats.
I'm doing this with aluminum blinds, but I need to shorten them from 72 inches to about 34 inches. That's a lot of blinds to snip through. This can also be done by snipping the center cord and sliding the blinds off that way, correct? That shouldn't affect its ability to retract (given I don't cut too much of the center cord, but there should still be plenty of length left over)?
Thank you for the video. I don't understand how my Lowes Project Source cordless mini blinds did not include instructions on how to shorten the blinds. I followed your instructions and it worked out well. Fortunately for me I could cut my plastic slats with a scissor, but instead of the 9 slats, I had to cut 30. That meant 60 slat cuts, and 180 string cuts. I am wondering if it was necessary to cut the ladder strings at all. Anyway, it was a big help, thanks again.
Another way to do this is to do it in a slightly different manner. I extended my blinds all the way down. I figured out where I want to start removing my blinds. I remove the top slat which eliminates the need to mark anything. On the top slat I removed, I left the thin (ladder) cords that help turn it as they will become the top for the bottom rail once it gets raised. In order to remove each slat, a small scissors can be used to cut the very fine cord that holds each blind into the assembly and the cut the fine loops between the front cords of the blind (those loops are fine thread like the ladder cords). When cutting, be careful to only cut all the very fine ladder cords and fine loops between the front and back vertical cords. The next step is to remove all subsequent blinds and cutting all of the fine ladder cords. I will also cut the first three so they are flush with the other cords (appearance purposes). Be careful not to cut anything else. Keep removing slats as following the steps above, but one does not need to be as exact trimming them flush. Also, cut the ladder strands above the bottom rail. The ladder strands for the first slat removed become the new ladder strands for the bottom rail. I then raise my bottom rail a bit. When removing the plugs on the bottom of the bottom rail, you can grab on both ends of the cord and pull on them simultaneously to get a start on removing them and work a pry tool under the plug to get them out. The rest is similar to what you describe. I like working from the top down as I do not forget which cord I want to save, what blind I want to stop at, etc. My method is just a different way of skinning a cat.
thia c I do not have anymore blinds to shorten. I essentially do the same thing this person does. I work from top down as I: A) do not have to remember where I have to stop B) only have to clean a small area from the tiniest cords for appearance purposes (about three slats). I also believe faux wood blinds come with instructions on how to do this. It is super easy to figure out the length. Mount your blind and extend it past your window. I left one extra slat beyond the window sill when they were open. This is easier than you think. Just one last thing do not cut the medium size cord at all as that will make your blind inoperable. The ones I cut were the very thin ones that attach the blinds to the cords and the two thicker ones on the ends for adjusting the length.
This is exactly what I’m looking for, but I’m confused that you stressed to not cut the up and down cord, but in the end you did cut it. Seems to me if this and the little “horizontal ladder rung things” and the length were cut initially it would be easier to remove the slats. I guess I’m just trying to not make another run to the hardware store to buy the snap cutters.
It's ridiculous how my kitchen window blinds I purchased at the standard 35-in width store bought have to come with 8,500 ft of length to them! I mean really? I threw away over half of the mini blind after shortening it.
yes, I know. I guess it's easier for the manufacturer to do this rather than package a gazillion lengths. I keep the slats to use for other "MacGuyver-ing" lol.

Yes, I supposed I left the extra slats just in case something went awry, but really, I had no other reason to.

Why do the extra ladders not being used even need to be cut off individually, since all of it not needed gets cut off anyway?

The blinds snap in in half... no need for snipping. Save time and no risking cutting the middle cord
The directions state that if more than 5 slats are removed it could have an effect on the performance of the blinds. Have you had any issues?
No I have not have any issues. But the blinds are mostly in the down position and only the slats get tilted.

This is exactly what I’m looking for, but I’m confused that you stressed to not cut the up and down cord, but in the end you did cut it. Seems to me if this and the little “horizontal ladder rung things” and the length were cut initially it would be easier to remove the slats. I guess I’m just trying to not make another run to the hardware store to buy the snap cutters.
That is a lot of extra trouble to shorten the blinds give me the corded ones anytime I could do them in less than 5 minutes.
It's ridiculous how my kitchen window blinds I purchased at the standard 35-in width store bought have to come with 8,500 ft of length to them!
I mean really? I threw away over half of the mini blind after shortening it.
yes, I know. I guess it's easier for the manufacturer to do this rather than package a gazillion lengths. I keep the slats to use for other "MacGuyver-ing" lol.

not exactly sure what you mean, but maybe the answer is that the slack just gets taken up naturally?

Another video showed just breaking the slats. You aren't going to be able to reuse them either way, but breaking them was faster.
I don't know what I did wrong, but my blind won't stay up now 😟
