Universal blinds come in preset lengths and usually you choose one that fits the closest size to your window. But they’re usually never the right length but these can be shortened by removing the unwanted slats.
This is a pretty easy DIY project that you can do in about 30 minutes. It can make a you a bit nervous because we will have to cut some of the strings but if you follow along with the video you will know exactly where to cut.
Shortening a mini blind requires the removal of slats. It doesn't matter if you have aluminum, faux wood or actual wood blinds, this process will work for all of them. The blind you have might be slightly different than what I have in the video but the process to shorten a blind is basically the same.
Sometimes it’s helpful to have a pair of needle nose pliers to help pull some of the lift strings out of different areas of the blind. You'll also have to tie some simple knots in the string along the way. All very easy to do!
Hopefully after watching my video tutorial you can see that this can be done in less than half an hour even if you’ve never done it before. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button so you won’t miss any of my weekly videos!

Concise and to the point - exactly what I needed. Appreciated not having to hear a 15-minute backstory about how you e.g. fixed the blinds for your brother's new house once.

Grrrrear video; finished in 15 mins. If you take a lighter and burn the pull strings slightly, they become stiff and very easy to thread through the holes. Thank you sooo much for your demonstration. 💕

Yes! You can shorten the mini blinds found at at Home Depot and Lowe’s pretty easily. I have shortened many blinds now. If the pre-measured blinds are slightly off in width a lot of times the store can cut them to fit. Then all you do is install and shorten. Thanks for watching!

save some frustration by tying the knot on the pull string before cutting, just slide the bell out of the way.

I’m not sure how cordless blinds work! But this method probably won’t work with them since the strings are going to be looped in differently. Sorry I’m not more help!

I can understand that shortening blinds looks intimidating. I remember the first one I ever repaired. It was nerve racking cutting the first string. I was thinking I was going to ruin the blind or actually repair it. I have now used this process to repair/replace many blind strings. It works!

DO NOT DO THIS ON CORDLESS BLINDS WITHOUT SOMHOW SECURING AT LEAST ONE OF THE LIFT STINGS!!! If you don't, they will all suck up into the mechanism and it's a SOB to get back out. I suggest a set small vice grips at the top if you have them otherwise only do one string at a time.
