Universal blinds come in preset lengths and usually you choose one that fits the closest size to your window. But they’re usually never the right length but these can be shortened by removing the unwanted slats.
This is a pretty easy DIY project that you can do in about 30 minutes. It can make a you a bit nervous because we will have to cut some of the strings but if you follow along with the video you will know exactly where to cut.
Shortening a mini blind requires the removal of slats. It doesn't matter if you have aluminum, faux wood or actual wood blinds, this process will work for all of them. The blind you have might be slightly different than what I have in the video but the process to shorten a blind is basically the same.
Sometimes it’s helpful to have a pair of needle nose pliers to help pull some of the lift strings out of different areas of the blind. You'll also have to tie some simple knots in the string along the way. All very easy to do!
Hopefully after watching my video tutorial you can see that this can be done in less than half an hour even if you’ve never done it before. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button so you won’t miss any of my weekly videos!

Concise and to the point - exactly what I needed. Appreciated not having to hear a 15-minute backstory about how you e.g. fixed the blinds for your brother's new house once.
Excellent! Really glad my tutorial helped you shorten your blinds! Also I try to make my videos as short and concise as possible. No need to add a bunch of non-related content. Thanks for watching!
Have to love it when a job is explained in the most simple way.
Grrrrear video; finished in 15 mins. If you take a lighter and burn the pull strings slightly, they become stiff and very easy to thread through the holes. Thank you sooo much for your demonstration. 💕
This is the best video I’ve seen so far, on how to reduce the height on blinds.
I’m really glad my blind shortening tutorial was helpful! I’ve done so many in the past that I thought others might find this useful since all blinds from big box hardware stores are long! Thanks for watching!
I agree! So helpful.
Great video. I’m about to shorten some wooden blinds. I saved a lot of money by buying them secondhand.
I SEE how BLINDS are so easily shortened, where were you all my life.👋👋👋😁👍
Absolutely the best tutorial I've seen on this. I've tried and tried to do this, and now, for the first time, I think I can actually do this myself. Thank you so much! ❤
Extremely clear and helpful. I'm not a DIYer, but this made the process very easy.
I’m really glad that you enjoyed my blind shortening video helpful! It’s not hard to do. I’ve shortened many mini blinds between my house and my rental house. You can do it! Thanks for watching!
Very nice, this is how the DIY videos should be. Great!!
I watched three videos.. definitely this is the most informative..I can finish my project now with confidence thanks.
You’re welcome! Shortening mini blinds isn’t exactly an intuitive thing to do but I’m glad you found my video on how to do it. I’ve shortened a lot of blinds between all the replacements and new installs I’ve had to do. It’s a new skill you’ll be able to use in the future! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this- I can't believe how easy it is, I was intimidated!😜
I agree with others on the instructional quality, with professional VO narration, great clarity plus excellent videography+editing.
Hey I’m really glad you enjoyed my blind string shortening tutorial! Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I always wanted to do this but the instructions with the blinds always seemed confusing. I wanted to finally do this so checked youtube and followed your instructions and it turned out great. Much easier than the instructions make it sound.
Thank you. I never shortened my blinds, which were way too long, and I had thrown the instructions away. Thank you for taking the time to.post this video.
Thank you. I've done this so many times but for some reason today I had a brain meltdown and needed a refresher course.
SUPER simple & clear instructional. Thank You! 🙌
I was about to buy custom blinds but after your video I feel confident I can do this. I’m sure I’ll be watching it again after I receive my new blinds. Thanks🤗
Yes! You can shorten the mini blinds found at at Home Depot and Lowe’s pretty easily. I have shortened many blinds now. If the pre-measured blinds are slightly off in width a lot of times the store can cut them to fit. Then all you do is install and shorten. Thanks for watching!
@@TheRenderQ this may be a weird question...but can this work on cordless blinds as well??
Many thanks for this video watched it and within 10 mins I had shortened my blinds perfect 👏👏👍
This is the first video I viewed and I do not need to go any further. If anyone can make this any easier to accomplish then I tip my hat to them.
Hey I’m really glad my mini blind shortening tutorial was helpful! As you can see it’s not too difficult to do! I’ve done so many now between all the houses I’ve lived in and a rental home that I do it from memory now! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful! Worked like a charm.
Excellent! I’m really glad my blind shortening tutorial was helpful! I’ve shortened many blinds in my rental house. Between tenants there’s always a few that need replaced and they all need to be shortened. Thanks for watching!
Clean job. Thank you!!
Agree with all the position comments, thank you, very clear and simple instructions.
Thanks for making such an easy to understand video! Going to this to ours right now.

Thank u very much is was very easy and Iam done my blind is fix ❤❤❤
Thank you very much! I think I may be able to get a few more months out of the 20 year old blinds this house came with because I think I will be able to move the extra bottom slats to where the middle ones have broken. Valuable information!
Excellent use of the extra slats to replace your broken ones! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, life saver. I learned something new. 👍
good
but no one sells them any more...
ah if only depot and lowes still sold blinds with cords. not sure if this will work with cordless becasuse they have springs built in.
Yeah cordless blinds are a different story! I have custom cordless blinds in my house but they were custom made for my windows. I haven’t had to install my own cordless blinds like the ones from Home Depot/Lowes. Hopefully you find a tutorial that can help! Thanks for watching!
save some frustration by tying the knot on the pull string before cutting, just slide the bell out of the way.
Make sure this isn’t done on blinds without a cord..or self lifting blinds!
Yes! This tutorial only works for standard blinds with pull cords.
if anyone can link a video on how to restring this type of cordeless blind. while shortening, the two lead strings escaped, zipping up into the top bar. 😫
Will this work with cordless blinds? The same?
I’m not sure how cordless blinds work! But this method probably won’t work with them since the strings are going to be looped in differently. Sorry I’m not more help!
Looks very complicated.
I can understand that shortening blinds looks intimidating. I remember the first one I ever repaired. It was nerve racking cutting the first string. I was thinking I was going to ruin the blind or actually repair it. I have now used this process to repair/replace many blind strings. It works!
@TheRenderQ I'm nervous to try, but I will eventually. Thanks for your video.
DO NOT DO THIS ON CORDLESS BLINDS WITHOUT SOMHOW SECURING AT LEAST ONE OF THE LIFT STINGS!!! If you don't, they will all suck up into the mechanism and it's a SOB to get back out. I suggest a set small vice grips at the top if you have them otherwise only do one string at a time.
