  • This is a how to video on replacing your weather-stripping on casement windows. This video will show you the safe way to remove and re-install your casement windows. There are three different systems that seal your window from the elements. First is the Mohair seal, next is the V groove Seal or Poly flex, and last is the Bulb weather-stripping that sits in the frame.

    I was looking for help with my "Hurd Millwork Co, CSE / AWN 1993" casement windows and found this video. I really liked the fact that you've the #patience hashtag here, which is probably one of the most important aspect that I picked up from this vid. You also did mention about a vid on painting the window, I'll be sure to check back here to learn how that's done. Thank you, Mike!

      Thank you for the comment and glad you found the video helpful. The painting of the casement windows is not to difficult. Standard painting skills are required to mask off the glass, and to remove and Re-install your hardware. I like to use an exterior paint for the window and the jamb as it stands up better to sun and water. I’ve painted two of these already and it most likely will be spring now before I take the other one off to paint it. Thanks for watching.
      Cheers

    if you take the window out/in from inside the house you dont need a ladder nor do you need to run in and out of the house for the crak arm and you can easily reach the black alignment tab at top....call me crazy but ya know just seems like a sensible option

      Thanks for the tip Jonsgillis. Yeah I’d do that if my windows were smaller but these things are a beast. I just feel more control lifting them from outside. Just my preference but good point for sure. Hey, thanks for stopping by and having a look! Cheers, Mike.

    From the look of it your windows are very similar to mine. Have you ever had to get the crank mechanism. In my case I believe I have to remove the thin wood shelf above the screws. Not something I want to do. Just wondering. Thanks for the video

      I have never had to work in the crank/ open mechanism. But in my case with the window open and looking from the outside. I can actually tighten the crank mechanism screws.
      Here is a website I used to order the weather stripping. They also have casement hardware. Good company to deal with. Cheers, Mike.

    Hi Mike I just watched your video on how to do the weatherstripping on the casement window. That was really helpful Mike. Thanks for your exact lesson on how to. You mentioned you have a video on cleaning up the window with new paint. Can you share the link for that particular video. I need to do the painting on the windows etc.... not sure how to go about it. Thanks kindly!

      Your very welcome , and thanks for the comment. The windows are in now for the winter and I did video how I did the touch up painting. Unfortunately the card in the camera said it was corrupt and the footage was not usable. I will do one eventually but if your doing it now I’d do this…
      1 . Remove all bulb and v groove weather stripping from the casement window.
      2 put the window on a good pair of saw horses
      3 use blue painters tape and tape the window glazing from the wood frame.
      4 paint the window as you would paint any wood trim using exterior paint
      5 remove the painters tape and let everything dry
      6 remove a blade from an razor knife completely and lightly clean up the glass and the wood edge from and excess paint or paint on the window.
      7 put the v groove and bulb weather stripping into the grooves and re- install the window.
      Any other questions just ask.

      @@maintenancewithmike Hi Mike, when installing the v seal weather stripping on a wood casement do you have to attach the ends with a 1/4" crown staple gun or something? If I do have to attached it and I don't have a staple machine any other suggestions I can use to attach the weatherstripping?

      Have a look at 21:40 mark of the video. The V groove is a friction fit only into the kerf. Is your v groove weather stripping a bit to loose? If so I’d bet stapling the v groove weather strip would crack the plastic and cause more problems then you want. I’m thinking of Big stretch caulk at a few locations along the kerf then install the v groove and tape it for a good 12 hours in a warm place. That should hold it in the kerf and still allow you to change it out in 10 years or so. Make sense.

      @nlw5651 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@maintenancewithmike Hi MIke yes I saw the 21:40 mark on your vid... it fits into the kerf on my window no problem. I just thought I'd ask if it was necessary to staple it as it was stapled by the manufacturer with a 1/4"wx1/2"L crown staple air gun. But it seems snug so I thought Id ask you if necessary. I do agree that if I was to staple it that it may crack the v groove or may even possibly crack the wood of the window. So I'll leave it without as it seems a snug fit in the kerf. Thanks very much for your reply.

    • @maintenancewithmike
      @maintenancewithmike  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@nlw5651 Yeah I would not staple it unless it starts to give you problems during opening or closing. Mine were good no problems the last half of the summer and the V groove stayed in place.
      Good luck and thanks for reaching out. Anything else, give me a shout.

    Question, my crank out window has one seal attached to the window, that seals against the flat metal face of the window frame. The window seal appears be glued at all 4 corners and wedged in a grove around the window. Do you know some tips about my particular set up?

    • @maintenancewithmike
      @maintenancewithmike  3 месяца назад +1

      Is it a bulb type seal? Usually the window has the moe hair on the outside that snaps into the v groove then the fin type that snaps in that deflects wind. Then on the casement part ( not the window) you have the bulb type that snaps into the v groove. So your window actually has the bulb type that snaps into the v groove on the window itself? If so , that’s fine as well. I’ve seen bulb weather strip on casements and windows. Is there a v groove? Or did they just glue it to the window? Or is it foam glazing tape maybe?

    • @craigparedes2612
      @craigparedes2612 3 месяца назад +1

      @@maintenancewithmike from what I can tell, my window only has a bulb seal. The top of my window is smooth metal. No fuzzy seals. The bulb seal CORNERS have a glue appearance. There is a small amount of play in the seal itself that is notched into the window. So far I have re-sealed the outer window, replaced the metal flashing above the window. Last night we had a bad storm and water dripped from the top of my window. Is it common to have only the bulb seal and no fuzzy seal?

    • @maintenancewithmike
      @maintenancewithmike  3 месяца назад +1

      @@craigparedes2612 for sure. The bulb is the last line of defence and is the actual seal. The other two ( moe hair and the fin) are wind stops. Let me clarify. Have you replaced the bulb seal on the window itself? If not you need to pull a corner out so you can see how deep the groove is and match up your bulb with a new one online. This is where I get my parts from in Canada. www.allglassparts.com/bulb-weatherstripping/

      @craigparedes2612 I’d say the bulb seal is not very flexible any more. That’s why I change mine. I think you’re on the right track once you find the match of your bulb. Should seal up nicely once that is new.

    Very helpful video, Mike. Thanks. Did you find on your casements that the plastic slider/guides are breaking apart? After 20 years, our windows developed that problem, but I cannot find out how to repair it or locate the parts. Since you are obviously resourceful, I thought you might have some ideas or even a video on this problem. Hope so. Thanks!

    • @maintenancewithmike
      @maintenancewithmike  11 месяцев назад +1

      Your very welcome. Yes a few of the edges of the plastic piece that slides in the track have broken off mine still function well at this point.
      If I have trouble with them in the future it looks like x you would have to change the whole hinge and track. Then you would get the new plastic slide. Here is a link to all glass parts in Alberta Canada. Excellent products and O have emailed them some pictures as well and they are pretty good. Although, depends who answers your email….some are better than others.
      This link will take you to a two bar hinge which is what I have and you’ll see that you just need to mount the track and the single rail with the plastic slide to your window and you’ll have a whole new setup.
      Hope this helps and let me know how you make out.
