This is terrific. It was a couple of weeks before I figured out that the two numbers on a needle were just different unit systems saying the same thing. Thank you Jelly Fish and grandma!

This was very helpful! Does the fabric at all play a role in needle selection? Would you still use the same size needle for ripstop nylon as well as 1000d cordura if using Mara 70 for both? You have a natural ability to teach. Your channel is the most helpful on RUclips!

You'll choose your thread weight based on the weight of your fabric. Heavy duty fabrics need a heavy duty thread, and light weight fabrics take a light weight thread. The style of needle is dependent upon the type of fabric you are using. This is less important with camping gear (which I've used practically every style of needle without difficulty), than it is with sewing clothing: (especially silks or denim or jerseys all have specialty needles). I've sewn the ripstop nylon with a ballpoint, universal and microtex needle and all worked fine. A universal needle is a great place to start, though.

Jelly Fish PharmGeek here Jellyfish - I’ve been using microtex Schmetz but is there any particular benefit to that over say universal for my projects - quilts for example - or hammocks - or even my current interest backpacks

Thanks Jellyfish. I don't know how you do it, but I guess sewing is possible in the sea as well.

But all threads are almost the same. Do they have a number code to identify to which needle they are Going to use?

What would happen if you use a needle that is too small for the thread? If it doesn't slide well like you demonstrate?

You could expect fraying thread, bunching, broken thread and nesting.

A topstitch needle is supposed to have a larger eye than a universal needle, so a number 10 topstitch needle might slide on the Mara 70, but the groove might not be big enough. I think that your Grandma was right, though.

Good process to use, if you don't know what thread you have. I use a Thread spread sheet in Google Sheets. Cuz I'm LAZY - I use the needle data from the thread manufacturer. :) www.guetermann.com/shop/en/view/content/guet_productDetail?currentProduct=mara_70
