I am new to sewing and just received the Singer machine I ordered and is looking for information on the supplies I will need for it. Needles are one thing I am researching now and will be going shopping after some research. The information you give on which size needle we should be looking for have given me even more information to think about and is a big help. Thanks for sharing this information even though I won't be doing upholstery work.
Omg, the first minute of this Video was so spot on. And I am not even going for upholstery work, but want to sew my own clothes. Of course I looked up the Schmetz guide for industrial needles...never thought 10 simple pages of information can drive you completely crazy.

Great info man, I'm an embroider and just got the Sailrite LS-1 Zig-zag machine. Seems super easy to use, and rugged. I wish I had space for an industrial machine, but I will at some point. I am hoping to expand my business to upholstery and tactical gear. Adding these to worlds together seems like a sweet combo. Love watching your videos, keep it up!
good basic info. i find testing thread/needle compatibility by letting the needle slide along a length of thread is an excellent and very quick & easy method, pretty foolproof. also worth pointing out that different needle points have an effect on stitch appearance, so it isn't solely about the type of fabric. round point (R) create slightly diagonal stitches.
After looking this video i searched my machine and found it!!!!!! And same needle systeem as the Consew 230. DBx1 1738A...... You are the best.......THX Now i only have to find a manual.

I prefer the lu-562. Mostly because Ive been using it for so long. I dont find the G bobbin limiting at all. You just need to keep an eye on it more often. Thanks!
Good info! I have a new-to-me Adler 167 triple feed machine. The manual says System 134. I'm guessing there's a difference between the System 135 and 134. Can you help me there? Thx
System 134 (R) is generally used in single needle lockstitch industrial sewing machines. It is also known as 135x5, 135x7, 135x25, 1901, DPx5, and DPx7.
I have never seen automotive leather available in different weights. Leather that comes in weights is typically meant for other things like belts and saddles. With automotive leather I use size 92 for all the base seams. If i want to do some decorative stitches I will still use 92 in the bobbin and use a thicker thread on top. I'm not a cheap ass, but on a Sunday night, , , or any night, in the middle of the night, if things start to get dull, can needles be touched up to perfect condition . . . .I've been sharpening knives for over 50 years, and have a full range of stones, including Arkansas stones (of course), and black surgical stones.
My commercial sewing machine keeps breaking the thread or locks up the machine when I back stitch. I have tried everything to adjust tension, new needle, different #92 thread etc... Any suggestions? We love your videos and thank you for your knowledge!

That's a great question. Haha personally I probably wait far to long that I should to change needles. Usually when I have any problem with thread fraying or breaking the first thing I do is change the needle. Its a better idea to change needles every few jobs or so. They are so cheep that if you remember to change it just change. The problem is I never remember until it gives me problems. You'll be surprised how long they will last. Glad you like the videos!!

Your thought on the Juki 1541S as you mentioned in your video. We have a Juki dealer near us so we are going that route. However I been watching the Sailrite vids & looking at the Fabricator & am impressed with the machine. I just wish that their was a dealer that supported the sailrite machines. Your Thoughts!!! use 92 for your base seam and use sizes 210 to 270 for the top stitch depending on how thick you want the thread to be. 210 will be like what you see in European sports cars and 270 will be like a baseball stitch

I use sunbrella fabric. I sew a tarpaulin for the boat. But when it rains, water drips from the sewing holes. I wonder which needle and which thread should I use.
You need to deal the sewing holes on back of fabric with a waterproof glue.Thats the only way you can waterproof any outdoor material. Because your making holes every time your needle makes a stitch. Hope that helps.

Honestly Dean, I'm not familiar with domestic needles and thread. I sure you can run size 92 bonded polyester on your machine. Just find a needle that is big enough to fit the thread through. You can buy one of these thread stands on amazon to hold the larger spools. amzn.to/2OxUzcZ
Do you find there is enough work space between the needle and the body of the machine is sufficient for working on cars. How high is it the opening? I noticed on their promotional video when the stitch was going from thicker fabric to thinner it seemed that the thread sort of dragged down. I think it would like nicer if that stitch came down closer the the edge of the thick fabric. What is the typical stitch length used for car interiors. Thank you.
Yes the needle and foot lift is sufficent.It is also adjustable for different thicknesses. Typical stitch length for all basic seams is 1/8". For decorative top stitches it varies depending on the look you are going for and thread thickness.
Great Information! I've been using 69 nylon thread with my Sailrite LS-1 for my auto and restaurant upholstery. Should I change to Polyester? I just want to make sure the jobs I do last for my customers. Thanks
Thanks!! I would strongly recommend switching to UV bonded Polyester for the automotive work and any outdoor furniture. . Nylon doesn't hold up as well to UV. You should be ok with size 69. I like 92 because it seems to be the most available in the most colors at the stores. Also I love pre wound bobbins and those are usually in 92.
Yeah for that you'll need a size 24 or 26 needle. I usually only use the contrast thread on the top thread and then use normal size 92 thread in the bobbin. Set the thread tension tighter on the bobbin so you cant see it from the top. I will do a video on this in the feature! hope that helps!

The 4 spools of thread (No needles) that came with a used Juki DDL-5550 has "TEX 60" on the spool bottoms. No info as shown. What is that and how does one judge its' size? I have bought 137-19 and sews fine thru 1.2m - 1.4m auto leather.

Hi! Hope you reply to inquiries on here. I have a Juki 1508 with a size 18 needle. I’m sewing on thick canvas where I roll the edge to get a nice clean seam but my needle might be too big because it’s creating an explosion in each hole on the back of the fabric. That’s the only way I can explain it. It looks like the needle came through but also pushed through the insides and it looks like a mini explosion in each hole it creates. Is it my needle that’s too big? Or my tension too tight? If I loosen the tension, the bottom thread lays flat against the back of the fabric. I can’t figure out the right balance. The tension is actually on the tighter end.

The needle sizing system is a joke and needs to be overhauled. Endless weird numbers from different manufactures that may or may not be the same...different shank size in the same system, etc.

17or 18 should be fine but you could go smaller if your worried about hole size. You just run more of a risk breaking your needle the smaller you go.
Hey hows its going? Can a size 18 go through 8-10 oz leather easily?
I dont ever use that type of leather that is measured in oz. I suggest buying multiple sizes and seeing what works best for your specific project.

We have a Mercury M141 and I can not find out what size needle it uses, I also can not find a manual for it

I use a needle manufacturer website like Groz-Beckert and Schmetz for industrial sewing machine needles. They have needles for everything.

No, the bonding process of the thread adds many positive features to the thread. Most importantly the it gives it the UV resistance.
