Your demonstration of how this 206 operated with its walking/pinning action in another video was absolutely over the top. I watched that segment of the video several times. Your comment on "...its like pinning with each step..." really brought home the main concept regarding the presser/foot cycle. It made me start looking for one of these machines...but then I decided to consider the J-1541 (new) for down the road.
Good video. In less than 4 years ive gone from my own 30 plus year old Elna to 7 more machines. And only 2 are the same brand. Basically I’m going to teach sewing in my small retirement town but ive also added more heavy duty craft sewing, making purses from jeans. My neighbor gave me his Singer Industrial, a bit rare as in I think they just quickly made better models. It’s a 1933 111W103 walking foot. Ive had a lot of luck in my quests learning all the brands i have, singer treadle, japanese models, japanese clone and lucky to bump into people who know. Another neighbors son in law makes sails back east and he saw the industrial in back yard when we were redoing floor in my sewing studio. And lucky in that, the retirement purchase came with 3 buildings and a craft room all my own built on old 2 car garage pad! So that guy explained and set the machine for me. I’m still afraid of the clutch motor. He recommended a thinner thread. Said what was in there way too heavy. I also found a great industrial store back in Anaheim visiting my kids. They even drafted their own manual gathering all known instructions and diagrams and similar but different brand machines. It’s called Albernoni if that helps anyone for parts. So knowledgeable. But happy to find this video and thread explanations. Thanks so much! I have been sewing for 50 years but never knew what all was out there in machines. Trying not to be hoarder. 8 is it!
Thanks, as a newbie to industrials this is very useful, and I would never have thought of missing some of the thread tensioner bits out to accomodate thicker thread. Obviously works!
Just buy different bobbin cases. I have a few different bobbin cases for different jobs. They’re only a few bucks for my machine. Same as needle plates. It works if someone can only have one machine as you said. My dealer sales needle plates along with appropriate feed dogs and needle plates for different sized needles for 4-6 bucks.
Great info. I had no idea why my compound cylinder arm wouldn't sew thicker threads. Now I know it's because I was an idiot about thread size & needle size but you know what, nobody ever teaches you how heavy duty walking foot leather machines work in the fashion academies 😏👌 in fact in London, many fashion graduates still don't know how to thread an overlocker after graduation 🎓

I use lots of TEX40 in my 1541 with no tension issues mostly in medium weight fabrics. I might buy a couple of extra bobbin cases at some so I can save a little time setting the tension but easy enough to do and practise makes perfect! Thanks for the videos!
If you only go up or down a size or two you can usually get by just fine with just an upper tension adjustment. That is a real good machine, Juki makes good stuff.
Thinking about getting a Chinese Typical that is equivalent to a Juki 1508/1510, went through the part lists of 1508/1510 and Typical 20665 14D and they look close to identical (besides where the typical has a longer arm and vertical adjustment of 1510-7) what you can't see however is the quality of parts like material/casting/machining. So I'm wondering how well your clone is doing, does it hold up? Any issues?

I have been looking for this kind of video for so long... I have a Sailrite. So many videos do not go into the complexity of all the different adjustments to properly set-up. Your discussion of bottom tension is golden. I have so many similar questions. How to choose for example: thread size, stitch length, bottom tension, top tension, feed pressure, thread size, straight or zigzag... Yes, there is a lot of subjectivity involved in these things... but generally speaking how do you choose? I take it that #1 is to set bottom bobbin tension. (I know this how to do this after a lot of searching, but if you a video on set-up, this would be good to show.) then specifically all the steps you do... Much like this but more explanation.

You can run 207 top thread and 138 bottom no problem at all that machine anything larger on the bottom thread and it won't work it'll give you trouble. Plus that Bob and even big enough to run any larger thread and 138 you'll be feeling it all the time.
Hey Alex, Good stuff right here. I just bought a 1541s and have been obsessing with figuring out what is the minimum size thread I can sew with and what is the maximum size thread I can sew with as well as materials used such as thick leather. I was told the 1541s can sew up to 277 thread on top but you must use to the maximum size thread of 138 on the bottom bobbin. Just as the consew 206 can if not heavier thread on top. I personally haven't done tests yet on my machine as I'm getting familiar with how to drive the machine really well and understand everything about it before I go driving it at high speeds on narrow roads if all that metaphor makes sense. So in conclusion to what the video is here. If I'm using small thread such as tex 33 I have to tighten the bottom bobbin to compensate for the small thread. 138 is rated as the maximum size for the bottom bobbin but have not tested heavier thread on top. I will be doing tests and keep you posted. Great content as always.

Can you tell me your personal opinion on the 1541s vs consew 206? Have you done thread testing on the 1541s? I just ordered a speed reducer for my machine as it seems it would only help my quality of sewing instead of going as blazing fast speeds. Plus it will give me more torque. Any advice?
I like to watch these videos. I use a Teflon disc (Bobbin Genie plus one drop of oil) and I do not get the back spin on the bobbin. Of course, I use my sewing machine is used for domestic sewing and free motion quilting.
I have had many machines and currently use Automatic Durkopp Adler 867's. I have had Pfaff 545's and 138 thread is really too heavy for those machines. You will see when backstitching and a 23 needle is suffice for 138 thread as a 24 will most likely deflect off the hook unless one adjusts the hook which I would not advise unless you know how to time the machine.. # 69 - 92 is ideal for this Consew machine

I use tex 240 all the time in my LU563 Juki. Those small bobbin machines like yours are really 75-140 tex for the most part. My Juki LG-158 is always loaded with the tex 170-240 and I wouldn't use lighter thread on that one.
I use Tex 138 for sewing those kind of things BONDED polyester. As he points out its much easier to use one sized thread and stick to it. I get my thread from the thread exchange. If you are sewing leather use a cutting needle, for fabric use a sharps.
If you were a new sewer what industrial machine would you buy? I’ve been using a Singer 4423 for over a year on simple projects. During this pandemic I’ve made over 100 masks for family and friends. I’ve also sewn other simple projects. I think I’m ready to make my first backpack but I’m concerned about sewing several layers of canvas with this machine. I also own a Janome HD3000 but it’s still NIB. It’s also real similar to the Singer so it would probably struggle with multi layers of canvas. Ty for your time.

I think that machine is set up for V92 which From what I know is the standard for automotive upholstery. But the supplier sells 277 I think it is called. I Have no idea what machine will run that thread.

I am looking to purchase a Consew 118 and the manual says it uses needles 16x63 for cloth and 16x64 for leather and plastics ranging in size from 14 to 25. I do not understand what this means. Can you explain this to me? I want to sew marine Sunbrella and vinyl upholstery.
I have a Consew 205 and trying to sew a seam on a duffel bag with NYLON thread, I have gone over re-threading, tension, making sure I've got bobbin thread going counter-clockwise and the thread keeps breaking (NOT OLD THREAD) and slipping back all the way to the take-up lever, ugh!! I usually keep it pretty simple. I buy standard point needles since they work as well in fabric as leather. The knife points cut fabric unnecessarily. If you are only sewing in leather then the various points can produce different visual effect and slightly protect the thread by setting it further into the leather.

They make new ones. But many sell slightly older too at not bad prices. One in my area that was used was only $300 but when i looked it up it was really low level version of their industrials. Just like all machine companies they sometimes produce cheap alternatives. I would say research for the best you can afford at used prices. Also models. Some machines ive been five or bought cheap even for home sewing machines are too find to hard parts or bobbins. One i have has really damaged needle plate and no one makes it anymore. So i filed it a lot!! You need research of join facebook groups for this brand and read their posts and ask questions. It has take me weeks to find one bobbin for one of mine.

Is today's brand new 206rb5 able to run tex135 thread like the older 206rb5 ? I'm in the market for this machine, I can get the new one or the older one like in the video. Is there an advantage or disadvantage between new and old ? Besides the obvious "patina and soulfulness"
I think a person could be happy with any generation. For me, condition means much. I think the capabilities run consistent through the generations as well.

Hi Alex great videos! On my Juki 1541s I’m having issues with the thread fraying or tearing apart at the needle. Happens more when I try to sew two pieces of thicker (6-8 oz) veg tan leather. I’m using a 22 and 24 needle and have been up and down in sizes of different threads. 69 up to 207. Since I’m totally green to sew machines in general I’m super lost. Any suggestions? Thank you. When everything else is right then I would suspect the thread. Poor thread has had me going in circles for days. Weather it is cheap, old, sun damaged or nicked it all can lead to a very frustrating experience. Get some good thread. I use mostly core spun polyester and bonded polyester and some good 100% cotton. Look for a good manufacturer, this is not an area to "save" money. Good Luck
Alexander Dyer Thanks for the response. I have tried threads from 3 different suppliers in different weights with the same issues. From what I’ve read/seen it seems like it could be a tension problem. I’ve tried going from very little to very much tension. Still no change. I’m very frustrated because this is my first machine and I haven’t any anything but problems with it.

Sure but like I said, I'm using what I had. Your point is about as helpful as if I were to point out that your comment misuses the word to and you should have used the word too. I knew what you meant and for me to point it out is merely annoying and does little to advance the point of the matter. you are right 24 is way too big for 138 however I think the reason he got away with it is because he wasn't using a leather point needle. Leather point needles cut the hole that ball point just punches through with no particular shape. If he was using a leather point you would see how gigantic the hole is compared to the thread.

This is not really a very good machine for light weight material. A drop feed machine is better for that if you are looking. Any way, maybe a size 14 needle running Tex 45 thread. I am not sure, I have never had that question asked and I have other machines for sewing garments.

Tex 135 V138 size 21 needle 24 size needles are for tex 270 /v 277
one of my points was with a #16 needle going to a #24 the variation with the scarf and hook would be quite significant

If you run138 on top you can run92 in boblbin- alot less hassle

I use 138 thread on top and load the bobbin with 69 or 92 works out good in upholstery/ pain in the butt to use138 in bobbin

69, 92 yes and I will say that I use tex 105 all the time with very good result, it is my goto size, tex 105

Yeah kinda. Consew 206RB, then there may or may not be a number 2 3 4 or 5 which indicates the version like Consew 206RB-3 for example

I am looking to purchase a Consew 118 and the manual says it uses needles 16x63 for cloth and 16x64 for leather and plastics ranging in size from 14 to 25. I do not understand what this means. Can you explain this to me? I want to sew marine Sunbrella and vinyl upholstery.

I have a Consew 205 and trying to sew a seam on a duffel bag with NYLON thread, I have gone over re-threading, tension, making sure I've got bobbin thread going counter-clockwise and the thread keeps breaking (NOT OLD THREAD) and slipping back all the way to the take-up lever, ugh!! Am I needing to change the thread?
You need to go up a needle size.
is there a guide somewhere to s69how what needle goes with what thread? 138 to 22 or 24 then. ..69 to a smaller size I assume, but what number? 207 thread to ??? . Thanks for the video. I usually keep it pretty simple. I buy standard point needles since they work as well in fabric as leather. The knife points cut fabric unnecessarily. If you are only sewing in leather then the various points can produce different visual effect and slightly protect the thread by setting it further into the leather.

Being new to sewing I assume bobbin and needle thread needs to be same size. Is that a correct assumption?
some will put larger in the top for the look of it and a size or two smaller in the bobbin. A lock stitch is only as strong as its weakest thread.
Some people will use regular thread in the bobbin and clear thread on top for topstitching
excellent video. i have a Nakagima industrial walking foot and its a great machine. but like any it needs proper adjustment! what thread would you recommend for sewing leather and canvases?

Many people use Tex 69 which is good. I like Tex 105, it is a substantial looking stitch, good and strong and you can still get a decent amount onto a standard size bobbin. I have some Nakajima videos, like:

I am not sure I understand. The bobbin does spin, no problem.
@@AlexanderDyer it spins and tangles or over spins inside the case causing it to hang around bobbin in in back of leather

I sometimes have that problem if I bartack too fast. Like it causes a whiplash effect in the casing.

They make new ones. But many sell slightly older too at not bad prices. One in my area that was used was only $300 but when i looked it up it was really low level version of their industrials. Just like all machine companies they sometimes produce cheap alternatives. I would say research for the best you can afford at used prices. Also models. Some machines ive been five or bought cheap even for home sewing machines are too find to hard parts or bobbins. One i have has really damaged needle plate and no one makes it anymore. So i filed it a lot!! You need research of join facebook groups for this brand and read their posts and ask questions. It has take me weeks to find one bobbin for one of mine.

Is today's brand new 206rb5 able to run tex135 thread like the older 206rb5 ? I'm in the market for this machine, I can get the new one or the older one like in the video. Is there an advantage or disadvantage between new and old ? Besides the obvious "patina and soulfulness"
I think a person could be happy with any generation. For me, condition means much. I think the capabilities run consistent through the generations as well.

Hi Alex great videos! On my Juki 1541s I’m having issues with the thread fraying or tearing apart at the needle. Happens more when I try to sew two pieces of thicker (6-8 oz) veg tan leather. I’m using a 22 and 24 needle and have been up and down in sizes of different threads. 69 up to 207. Since I’m totally green to sew machines in general I’m super lost. Any suggestions? Thank you. When everything else is right then I would suspect the thread. Poor thread has had me going in circles for days. Weather it is cheap, old, sun damaged or nicked it all can lead to a very frustrating experience. Get some good thread. I use mostly core spun polyester and bonded polyester and some good 100% cotton. Look for a good manufacturer, this is not an area to "save" money. Good Luck
Alexander Dyer Thanks for the response. I have tried threads from 3 different suppliers in different weights with the same issues. From what I’ve read/seen it seems like it could be a tension problem. I’ve tried going from very little to very much tension. Still no change. I’m very frustrated because this is my first machine and I haven’t any anything but problems with it.

#24 needle is to big for 138 #24 needle is used with v210 thread. I see everything with v92. V92 in the bobbin #v210 for topstitching

I knew what you meant and for me to point it out is merely annoying and does little to advance the point of the matter. you are right 24 is way too big for 138 however I think the reason he got away with it is because he wasn't using a leather point needle. Leather point needles cut the hole that ball point just punches through with no particular shape. If he was using a leather point you would see how gigantic the hole is compared to the thread.

Thanks for the video. Can you tell us the weight of the lightest fabric that your machine can sew given the smallest needle and lightest thread it can take?
This is not really a very good machine for light weight material. A drop feed machine is better for that if you are looking. Any way, maybe a size 14 needle running Tex 45 thread. I am not sure, I have never had that question asked and I have other machines for sewing garments.

No. I have never ran into that. I have change the needle sizes here and did not need to adjust the hook gap.
