Hey Cesar, Have you done any videos on how to deal with the inside curves of a Barrel back chair. I do Marine Upholstery and a LOT of the Captains chairs are Barrel backs. Over the years I've pointed many people in your direction. The number one maestro around a sewing machine but here's a question that I don't think even you can answer. I'm trying to make a patchwork leather bag using raw edges but it's not good. I'd like to French seam it but how the hell can you French seam on both axis? How would you do it my friend?
Trying to figure it out, but I cannot understand what really is the project you have in mind. I suppose the patches would be of irregular contours. I suppose the patches would be glued down to a backing material like building a puzzle. Would the leather pieces be precisely cut and attached flat edge to edge? or Would they be overlapped?
I am located in Mexico and trademarks are different in each country. But, most of these solvent based yellow glues are similar everywhere. Cechaflo i.m not a begginer but i still love watching your work. i.ve done some vinyl cushion covers and was a bit hesitant to do this double topstitching cos of round corners. you know puckering and bulk make it already difficult to work. i know you have to make notches to remove as much bulk as possible and help to ease the material at the corners but sometimes i.m afraid that if i cut too much the material will lose its strenght at the corners. am not an expert like you so i would love to see how you do it you.re a great teacher and perfectionist which i like!! really relax watchin you. your work is perfect cos u do it with love and dedication! thanks
I now remember und understand it is not an easy task on one of the seams, more specific on main panel seam. You're right if the cuts are done too close to previous closing sewing it could weaken the material of the corner. What I consider very important in case of sewing cushions with this decorative stitch is the use of a backing/ribbon all around to reinforce the edge. I think if the material is thin it wouldn't be necessary to do any cuts, the small folds could flatten while sewing on top.

Damn all mighty I really love your videos for learning. Where do you pick up the canvas, sunbrella, or vinyl backing for your french seams. I was looking last night at a local art store and they didn't know what I was talking about or needed. Sailright suggests using grosgrain ribbon but i'm not sure. As far as the basting tape where do you purchase that from? I think that basting tape is essential for ease of sewing. I also spend half the day researching heavy threads to buy for my 1541s machine. I ended up going with the bonded polyester as that is best for outdoor use and sun protection. I don't really see any benefits of bonded nylon over the bonded polyester other than slight strength increase but having the uv protection in the bonded poly seems like it was a better option overall even if stuff will be indoors. I like having peace of mind knowing it will be better protected if outdoors than nylon thread. I bought 138 and 207 bonded polyester in White, Black, and Beaver color as I have read those are staple colors when doing upholstery and leather stuff. Suggestions on that? I am also learning how to pattern in my upholstery class now motorcycle seats because the instructor said thats where the $$$ is in. I went to a junk yard motorcycle shop and picked up some really ugly torn up seats to work on for my class. I'm just enthusiastic about the whole thing and wanting to learn as much as possible. But, these strips of backing material are sold ready...'thin grosgrain ribbons' would work right. I used a very thin plastic canvas that is useful for stright sewings. Thin stretchy upholstery fabrics could be useful too. The celestra cloth is also useful if some curvy sewings.
watch out for old thread or cheap thread my friend did a whole boat without realizing the string was bad. we moved to a new shop and there was old thread that rips easy

Great work again Cesar. I enjoyed this one. Practice makes perfect, but how do you get your line's so straight? Am struggling with straight lines, as mine end up crooked.
To keep an even stitch the 'keys' are a LOW SPEED and a GUIDE...in this case my guide is the 'small foot' (open zipper foot with an indent/cut I did on purpose to have two measures) which should be lined up with the 'central closing sewing line'...if you watch min 14:31 you would realize I'm 'using' the back protruding part of the foot. Keep on training!

The ideal way to keep control of speed of an industrial sewing machine is a 'servo motor'. I have two video-tips that would help someway to reduce and keep control of speed of a clutch motor: ruclips.net/video/jaVDiZGi9js/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5_0YQ_W8iVM/видео.html
Both ways are valid, depending on the position of cut pieces. If we would have to work on a flat piece,after sewing its seams, it would be placed over a single backing foam piece and double stitchings would be done on top view, at the end. It depends on the kind of design. This method avoids bulky ends somehow difficult to sew.
The 'extra material/ selvage/seam allowance' should not be too short. It should be wide enough to be folded down over easily. A 3/8" extra for seam allowance would work out. After sewing, if necessary you could cut off some excess.
I mostly use two sizes, number 8 (thin) and number zero (thicker) (these are measures in Mexico). I think it corresponds to 92 and 138 in USA, but not completely sure, sorry.
As I said before a post bed or flat bed 'twin needle sewing machine' is the ideal to do this kind of job. Unfortunately I have not bought one yet. Of course the procedure would be easier and the result would look better.
I think the 'french seam' has a more sporty look and depending on where it goes, it should be reinforced on its back side. In the case of my chair I'm going to use the reinforcement strip. Perhaps, it's matter of taste, upholsterers are using the 'double stitching(french seams)' a lot lately. Definitely a 'flat felled seam' adds more strength to a 'sewing junction'. I'd probably use both kind of sewings on this chair.

can you do a demo for round corners which cannot be hammered so easily and you have to remove the excess material when inside out pls?

if necessary you can cut darts on the corners to make it lay flater.
