The essence of this song is that it progresses from the basest Greek conception of “love” - porneia; and then to eros (she contemplates Jesus as a mate); progresses to philios (she rejects marriage as a possibility but loves Him as a person) and culminates in agape when she realizes he is the Second Person of the Trinity.
I love Renee Castle's performance singing this classic song. Her voice and acting are superb, and her facial expressions are very eloquent and moving. Jesus must have been a heavy sleeper, I can't believe he slept all the way through the high notes!

I remember vividly when JCSS came out & was blown away by Yvonne Elliman's rendition of don't know how to... since then I must hear it now & then 50 yrs. later. I have heard several versions by various artists, but always returned to Yvonne, today I found this video & was impressed. Bravo miss Castle!!! ❤️💐🙌
I love both Film's. But I love the remake even more. I am very moved by Renée Castle's performance. The pureness and vulnerability She conveys is true and Soulful for all-time.
I think this is an absolutely solid performance. Each version has a different and unique interpretation of this song lyrics, her breaking down into the sobs at the end was quite moving.
Renee Castle really is the best Mary Magdalene. Out of all the ones I’ve ever seen, and there have been some superb ones, she’s the only one who absolutely nails both the singing and the acting!
I don't know how to love him What to do, how to move him I've been changed yes really changed In these past few days when I've seen myself I seem like someone else I don't know how to take this I don't see why he moves me He's a man he's just a man And I've had so many men before In very many ways he's just one more Should I bring him down? Should I scream and shout? Should I speak of love? Let my feelings out? I never thought I'd come to this What's it all about? Don't you think it's rather funny I should be in this position I'm the one who's always been So calm, so cool, no lover's fool Running every show, he scares me so I never thought I'd come to this What's it all about Yet if he said he loved me, I'd be lost, I'd be frightened I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope I'd turn my head, I'd back away I wouldn't want to know He scares me so, I want him so I love him so
I believe this song more accurately describes what the Adulterous Women (John 8:1-11) went through/her trevail shortly after Jesus told her to "Go and sin no more".
Damn, everyone seems to hate the remake, but I like it better than the original. I like the sining better and I love the modern twist. Renee is awesome, I fucking love Jeromes Judas and Gleen Cater is just great (saw him live yesterday and damn! He was fantastic... expect for the high notes).
I never liked the '73 version. I know that is a very unpopular opinion, but... I dislike it. This however, is fantastic, despite the vocals being weak. The vocals gave way to better acting - probably the best "acted" version of JCSS, so... I'll take it.
@@princezzpuffypants6287 I'm SORRY. I just cannot agree with you. The acting in this here version is ALL sorts of weird overacting. The 73 one has more subtle, if not realistic acting, they emote more by not emoting too much, it feels very heartwrenching. Just look at Ted Neeley in Last Supper, he looks as if he was holding on to dear life not to tear his heart appart before Gethsemane. The 2000's version is not better acted, nor better sang. In my opinion it's weird and cringy. I still like though, but more like a guilty pleasure than anything else.
I heard Brightmans version of the Superstars songs and not one can touch her. She has depth and layers in her vocals. Elliman does not in this version she sounds kind of flat to me.
She always seemed a bit too whiny for my liking in it, but to be honest I was never a fan of I don't know how to love him. Always seemed out of place to me and almost shoehorned in to give a solo female song.
@@Krrrimmi I find Ellimons voice sort of shallow and flat. The best version was not in a show but done on a recording by Sarah Brightman. She has the chops to sing anything and she killed her version. Kind of unfair because Brightman might have the most versatile female voice in the world.

I liked this version better then the 1973 because why there’s blood in this one the 1973 doesn’t have any blood in that version of the 1973 that why like this one
I thought the singing was, on the whole, pretty good. I wasn't keen on Herod but Judas, Caiaphas, The Pharasees and The Disciples were pretty great I thought
Yes no need to overact do it affects the vocals. It's a musical, not a drama. The ruined Les Miz doing that. Absolutely ruined the music fishing for Oscars. Sounded like they were being tortured not singing.

To those who are dissing this performance. She didn't just sing it, she lived it. Now that's what a beautiful, empathic performance should be.
