Another good tip is to look the first few days of the month since that’s when a lot of units become available. We noticed massive spikes in options 1-4th of the month.
Love your Vancouver Videos, Harmonie! I currently live in Ontario and am considering a move out west later this year, so this type of content is exactly what I need! :)
Yeah, if any listing looks "too good to be true", it usually is. Make sure you see everything in person and if something seems sketchy, don't hand over your money without proof or documentation :)
Hi Harmonie! Love your videos. I'm from Ontario, and looking to move to Vancouver soon. Can you make a video on finding things to do/making new friends? Thanks! :)
Ahhh.... Craigslist! I was using kijiji..! I'll definitely use Craigslist from here on in. Great videos as always..... 2 months left of Ontario...then off to Vancouver. Cant wait to live that BC life!! Ohh...question...I noticed landlords ask for reference. Now I've never rented before in my life. Only owned a property and sold it. Now currently residing with my mother till I move in 2 months. So what reference would the landlords need ? Thank you kindly in advance..
I did the same thing when I moved here (because there is no craigslist in ontario.. well at least there wasn't when I lived there), so I was missing out on most of the rentals. But as for a reference, honestly, you could probably use you mom. Get her to use her maiden name, generally they just want to have a background check so that you're a good tenant. Bring your proof of income/ bank statements and then a reference from your mum should be sufficient! :) Best of luck!
A great video. No surprise that it is popular. Question how does one first get approved when you first move to Vancouver? Assuming of course that one does not have a job lined up.
Hey there! I would say start off with a job hunt. Once you've secured a job then you can start looking for a place to live/ figure out which areas you like!
Heyy ma'am, I am planning to move to Burnaby, BC and I am a student, I just need a studio apartment for rent, I am not comfortable in sharing my appartment, what the average rent there for a studio apartment?
Yeah, Abdelmjid nailed it with his response. Most of the units right downtown are in that range but can go up to about $2,300 at max for a super fancy 1 bedroom. But $1,100-$1,500 is a pretty realistic range 👍🏼Best of luck!
I can;t predict exactly how it will impact your experience here, but I assume that it could be super advantageous because Vancouver has an extremely high concentration of Asian speaking people. Vancouver also does a lot of international business with Asia and the importing industry is huge here. So I'm guessing knowing mandarin will give you a huge advantage in the job market. I would assume that you will be able to find more opportunities for work here than the average English speaker :)
Hey Harmonie! Thanks for all of the lovely videos about Vancouver! Me and my boyfriend has decided to move to Canada in 2021, but we are choosing between Vancouver and Toronto. Since neither of us have been in Vancouver and he has been to Toronto maaany years ago, we kind of have to base our choice on research. We currently live in (and I'm born in) Helsinki, Finland, which is a cold, dark and quite unstable country when it comes to climate. I would rather move away from the dark, cold and long winters (from about november to april) but also wish to find a job. I work in culture and marketing. We are well aware of the climate in Canada not being the best variation for Finland but it just seems like the kind of place we could call our home. Do you have any points or recommendation/things to consider when choosing between Vancouver and Toronto? Sorry for the long comment :D
Hey Fanny! No way, I'm actually Finnish myself, mitä kuuluu? (I don't speak very much Finnish outside of that though, haha), but I totally understand the country and can see why you have a hard time living in the climate there. In Toronto, winters are long and cold similar to Finland (less extreme cold, but still quite similar). However in Vancouver the climate is always above zero and usually in the winter the climate stays around 5-8 degrees. The rain makes it a bit gloomy, but overall, it's super mild so you can still go outside and enjoy nature. Living here after moving from Ontario (near Toronto) I have had some of the best winters of my life It completley changed the way I deal with the seasons. If you;re looking to move to Canada, Vancouver would be a much better fit for you in that way :) Thanks for reaching out, let me know how it goes!
I have dual nationality of the uk and Canada. I’m hoping to move to Vancouver in the next few years. Any tips of finding a job before I leave the uk or should I come with enough money to last me a few months whilst trying to find a job? Many thanks!
Great question Sam! I would say it's safer to find a job before moving because finding good employment in Vancouver can be really hard depending on the industry. My boyfriend has been out of work for like months now. So I would say do both, try to save up money before coming here and find a job first just in case :)
I live quite far from British Columbia but for 4 months in the summer I'm looking for a place to live in while I'm working my co op job in Vancouver. Do you suggest getting a fully furnished place as I won't be able to bring my stuff with me or would what do you suggest to be the most cost effective?
Hey Eve, great question! Definitely try to find a furnished place id you can. It should be fairly easy to find something for 4 months that has the essentials like a desk, bed, dresser, ect :) Best of luck!
Moreover I am planning to move in Jan as an internal student. So will it be able get a room with a partner for like 2 bed appartment so rent be divided and be upto 600-900$/ month. Is it possible?
Living in Vancouver is very expensive! Rents for a one bedroom goes for $2,400, and $3,700 for a 2 bedroom (don't think about the price and location for too long, chances are they will be rented out). There are so many good restaurants making not to go out to eat almost impossible. There are so many people in Vancouver are living from pay cheque to pay cheque so don't even try to save money. You just can't!
Hey Harmonie! We have a mutual friend and we actually might have met one of his parties before in Guelph! I'm talking about Rob haha I just moved to Vancouver and was watching some of your vids and saw Rob in one of them. Small world.
Hey Mark! omg I actually think that Rob mentioned one of his friends was moving here recently! Rob is one of my best friends, that's crazy. Feel free to DM me one of these days when the pandemic dies down, we should hang out! :) Also, welcome to Vancouver, I hope you're loving it so far
For a newcomer to the city/country, is it better to show that you have money in cash, or rather open a Canadian bank account, put all money there and show? The biggest problem for an immigrant is not finding an apartment, but showing the landlord that you are a reliable person.
It is definitely more credible to open a Canadian Bank account & have your money deposited in there. Having a bank account just shows that the money is legitimate & readily available :)
Hi Harmonie! great video. Quick question, here in Toronto, you need a broker/ real estate agent to view most rental properties. Is it the same in Vancouver?
Hey there Hari, great question! No generally in Vancouver you don't need a broker to do showings for rentals. Most of the time you can coordinate with the property managers directly and go forward with the proccess that way :)
Just 1800 a month for rent is not good! It's crazy. Many people just make about 2000 per month. Totally unrealistic. Register with BC housing. You can give for under 800 in Yaletown.
Hi Harmonie!! My husband and I are planning on moving to Vancouver from Mexico! we have investigated a lot about the city, but I would love to have the opinion of someone who is already living there, since this is a big decision for us. So... I'm an architect and my husband is a chef... do you know by any chance how is the work market for our careers? Love your videos!!
Hey Marium! Great question. Sadly, I have no clue what those industries are like in terms of employment, so it;s hard for me to say. Sorry I can't be more helpful with that. But best of luck with the move, I've met a lot of wonderful friends here who have moved from Mexico as well and they have all really loved it! I hope you guys do too!
Hey! I would love to, but sadly I don't have much first hand experience with that sort of thing, I'm not sure I would be of much help. Best of luck though Durell, sorry I couldn't be more helpful :(
Hi! I live in Brazil, do you know any company or realtor or someone like that who may help me to find an apartment and close the deal for me? I intend to move with my cats (yes plural) and I really would like to take them with me straight to a permanent address... Am I asking for too much? Hehehe...
