Hi Allyza! How’s your current rental apartment? I’ll moving next year to Vancouver therefore I’m doing as much research as I can since I have never been to Canada.
Oh and once settled for the first year, even if you don't have homies, ask around students or colleagues (if you're a worker) about their areas, rents, how comfortable they feel, etc. That's how I got to rent my second place in Europe (through a classmate, I went to her rented room and I loved it and when she left, I just "took over" it like an empress hahahah). Many people underestimate walking around the city and looking at small ads literally stuck on some windows or building walls, so the fact that you mentioned it is a big "plus" for me! ;-) Choosing an area where you feel comfortable walking around is also very important, especially for international students and new comers/immigrants. It's better to pay a bit more and be comfortable enough to be emotionnally stable and happy than just look for the cheapest place and be miserable there, especially in an era where we might see more epidemics (so being stuck in quarantine in a place you wanted to use to sleep and store your belongings will turn into a living hell). I hope people will listen to you , start by renting a place for two weeks (or less) to put your belongings there and walk thoroughly throughout the city and make these phone calls (I hate them too hahahah).
Yes!! The point about spending a bit more for living somewhere you feel comfortable is sooo true. I spent a good chunk of the pandemic in a 250 square foot bachelor apartment (I started my lease pre-pandemic so if only I would've known haha) because it was suuuper cheap but it was definitely a hard time.
cool tips!! Moving to Vancouver this year and finding an apartment looks like the main struggle will do all of the tips except for the friends one ahahaha
Hello Jess. The tips are awesome. Please where in Vancouver can one get a cheap rent for family, and what's is it like to rent a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment?
Hi, one question. I‘ll have some viewings soon, can you maybe tell me what are important things to look at? How does it works, do you have to sign a contract or something like that? Sorry, I‘m new to Van😅
I plan on moving out there in August! My question is, how is it to find an apartment before you are actually in the city? Is it possible? I have a brother who lives there who will help me look for places, but will this be enough? Thank you!
@@TheVeganZombie21 To answer your first question, ever since covid a lot of apartments offer virtual tours which is super convenient! It's definitely possible. On top of that if your brother can also go to in-person viewings for you, you're totally set! As for the rain... yes. It's bad. So bad. LOL. The summer is great but everything else is mostly rain rain rain. Definitely invest in some rain boots + rain jacket. On the plus side, we have pretty mild temperature here compared to the rest of Canada! And the mountains and nature make it worth it.. I think.
@@jessdelight Okay noted, thank you! I love the rain but my partner does not so much - so that worries me if he will like it there as much as I will. Does the rain really affect your mood? Or are there at least some sunny days from October to March?
@@TheVeganZombie21 Yeah, you get used to it after a while and there's definitely some sunny days in between. A lot of people get those mood boosting lights
Thanks for the tips! Ill be moving by this year mid-September, do you know how I could find people to share an apartment with? The rental prices are a bit too high lol :/
@@jessdelight yes cheaper end is $ 1200 for older shadey individuals apartment block . A nice apartment downtown is minimum $ 1500 one bedroom. Suites around town nice basement or above ground are cheaper around $1200. I am a councillor and advocate for federal inmates being released to community and I find them housing and it is a full time job finding housing for guys and also for low income persons in recovery I support in attaining housing. Vancover is in dire need of immediate help. We need huge social housing complexs and highrise like in the USA. So many of us work hard and can not afford to buy and most even paying rent is cost them all the pay cheque. So sad it's sickning to see. I hope the market crashes hard and governments take serious action and make housing options affordable for all people.
Ha ha ha ha funny are you serious ??? 600 will get you a park bench. No rent is 600 unless you find 5 roommates and willing owner to rent to 6 people , good luck. It's bad. It's ugly. Good luck again
I am a Chinese Canadian landlord. I do discriminate a bit, but most landlords do. Whites and East Asians get first preference, followed by Middle Easterners. Also, most Chinese people like cash. If you can pay in cash, we will consider you first. Show your credit history is high (above 750), and you will always be in consideration. In the lower mainland, ground floor suites in Burnaby are your best bet. They go for the lowest price at the greatest amount of space, that is centrally located. My family has 7 properties and we always have trouble finding top tier tenants there. Langley has the highest quality tenants because they're all young, white professionals. Just my two cents.
