You really should only speak to him in Japanese. Everyone else will speak to him in English. My children’s dad is Filipino and my kids used to speak Tagalog and kampangpangan fluently while living in the Philippines. We left and now they are older and do not speak it at all because their father didn’t speak to them in his language! Love your videos!!!! Also baby Hugo is completely adorable!!
I have the same thing, I can’t speak my mother's language but can understand it perfectly. I learned English (obviously not my first language so I’m sorry if there are any mistakes btw) really easily so I’m kinda sad I didn’t learn my mom's language well enough.. now I have like 6 languages at school so I don’t have the time
Actually. It would be better if they spoke in both in equal proportions. Teach him to speak both. I used to speak exclusively Tamil when I was very very little and then I went to preschool and I had to learn English on my own (I was born in the US) and eventually lost most of my speaking ability. I still can understand and speak kind of, but most of my vocabulary and grammar ability is gone.
That’s what my mother did with me and it helped me a lot because I was able to become fluent in Japanese :) I also think it is important to also watch tv shows from Japan because that’s what helped me learn more vocabulary when we didn’t live in Japan 😊 It also helps to understand Japanese humor and culture better too!
My mom is Japanese, and I am forever grateful that she spoke in Japanese to me growing up. I'm currently living and working in Japan, and being bilingual here is truly a blessing 😇I hope you will continue talking to Hugo in Japanese as he grows older, and that he will be just as grateful to you as I am to my mom one day!
Please continue speak Japanese to Hugo. I'm from Malaysia and can speak three languages and one dialect, this is from my experience because I talk with my family members with two languages since young. Also, I'm a psychology student, babies actually have the ability to distinguish different language, so don't worry about confusing Hugo
Being a culinary arts major must be the best thing ever. Like imagine just being like "HOLY SHIT I HAVE SNICKERDOODLES DUE AT 11:59" or "hey man can you help me with my pastry homework??"
I've heard advice from others when teaching their children to be bilingual that if one person speaks one language only to the child, and the other person speaks only another language to the child, they can become bilingual by age 3 or 4! In other words, if you speak only Japanese to Hugo, and your husband speaks only English to Hugo, then he can learn quicker. It helps if you do that around him when you're together as well.
You are such an inspiration Rie. I am so glad to be able to see you as a mother and a very talented chef/video producer. I cant wait to see more videos and more with baby Hugo. Sending love and positive vibes your way girl!
I’m so glad that bilingual/multilingual people are coming in and supporting Rie teaching Hugo Japanese and as another multilingual, I support it too! I’m Indonesian, my mom is from the Indonesian ethnic group Sunda and she speaks to me in Sundanese since I was little. By the time I was a toddler, I was given English books and English children program. I speak Indonesian, Sundanese and English just fine right now, so yeah, you should teach your son Japanese and he’ll grow up bilingual just fine ❤️
My mother only spoke to me in Japanese growing up and I’m so grateful now because it helped me become fluent! The only time we would speak in English is if my father was involved in the conversation 👀 I don’t know if this is a way that you would prefer, but my mother and I always watched Japanese TV shows and that helped me expand my vocabulary and learn more about Japanese humor and culture. I would usually watch モノマネ or 行列のできる法律相談所 with my mom and I remember it helped me bond with her a lot more ❤️ りえさん頑張ってください❤️
hi rie ! hope you’re fine ! i just wanna thank you for being so down to hearth, you have this kind aura around you it’s just incredible :) i never comment usually but there was smtg that i wanted to let you know haha. during the video you said that you were speaking both japanese and english to hugo, and that you’re worried he’s getting confused! so this year i’ve been studying linguistics and ‘human’ language! we studied how children get to learn to speak and how they memorise words and etc. growing up (before 6years old) my parents taught me both of their maternal languages (arabic and turkish) and i grew up in france/ switzerland while watching and listening english ! children DO NOT get confused when they grew up in a bilingual (or more) home. our teacher emphasised on the fact that til 6years old, kids have this amazing capacity to learn languages without getting lost or confused. for instance i am twenty now and i’ve been learning korean and german and i have more ease learning them! i apologise for any mistakes haha hope i didn’t confuse you more but, if you’re interested there are many interesting books dealing with this subject ! i wish you a lovely day/ evening and thanks for everything rie ! stay safe and take care
I’m in undergrad school rn and I’m having a very hard time deciding between either culinary or law school. I wanted to be a pastry chef ever since I was a little girl, and have watched every food network show when I was little to pass the time as well. But now, I’m also very interested in the law and policymaking as well. I don’t know what to do 😩
Love the Q & A Rie! For the person who asked about starting a baking business. Like Rie said, using Instagram to advertise is good and you can open a business using Etsy. I see lots of different people who sell baked goods like cookies (especially during the holidays)on Etsy. I know someone who started small with her husband who is a trained chef. They made many types of bread and sold it at a Farmers Market, then branched out to several of them in the area and once they got their name out there and got some money saved they opened a little café in a downtown area with lots of foot traffic from local businesses. I took a few years, and a lot of hard work but they were determined.
Thanks so much Rie for letting me get to know you even more. Your videos have taught me so much valuable information I can use in my cooking and baking. 👍🏽😘
Just love this video! RUclips and especially watching Tasty, Buzzfeed, food and travel vlogs and eat the menu types of videos have gotten me through self isolation times. As for an easy dessert to make that can still impress people, few things are easier to make than pannacotta. I tend to make mine with vanilla and top it with raspberry sauce. Gonna need to try to alter it this year though for New Year’s Eve (often make pannacotta for New Year’s Eve) and try to make it as low carb as possible (like try to use stevia instead of sugar, or use less sugar) as my dad is now a type 2 diabetic and I want to make the dessert in such a way that it doesn’t impact the diabetes as much as it would normally do. Gotta love experimenting in the kitchen :)
Rieeeee Idk why but it's so good to see you posting videos again. Thank you for this Q&A questions. Also, I'm from malaysia ! Idk the shop malaysia in LA or NY but you should try Nasi Lemak (Coconut Rice served with Sambal anchovies/prawn), Roti Canai, Pulut(Sticky Rice with Curry Chicken) and Kuih Muih (variety of traditional Malaysia food) Thank youu for featuring the question it makes me feel bless. Stay safe and sending lot's of lovee to youuuuu 💖💖💖💖
Great advice about Interning in a kitchen before going to Culinary school! Working as a chef is hard, stressful, hot, work that doesn’t pay very well. You’ve got to know you love it before you spend a fortune on culinary school.
I totally agree with you about the crunchy bread crust piercing the roof of your mouth. So I use the crusts for bread crumbs and enjoy the fluffy middle.
Rie you are amazing. Please practice driving on the freeway You can go from one on-ramp to the next exit. Make it a loop. Just do that a few times and then maybe you'll feel comfortable going two exits away! I know it's scary but you can do this! Leave Hugo at home. ❤️
Rie I think New Years Resolutions are silly. I think you were put on the spot last year and didn't want to or even need to drive on the highway! So don't apologize or continue with the idea! You're a great Mom and a phenomenal asset to Tasty! You got enough going on!
9:00 My dad made the same thing with me and my brother but with German. I probably didn’t understand at the beginning but I then already knew a few German words before pre-kinder. I go to a German school in Costa Rica, where you speak Spanish, and now I know German really well.
This video is probably the only one I’ve been able to focus on for the full duration without looking at the comments or drifting off to do something else. It might be your voice or the subject matter. Either way, thank you :”)
Not sure if it was a huge concern but babies in multilingual households can distinguish between different languages! Typically bilingual babies develop language a little later than the average milestones so if that happens it's totally normal
if I may answer what is a simple dessert that is still impressive: panna cotta. cream, milk, sugar, gelatin. put in a mold, let it set, add toppings (like raspberry jam)
I agree with other commenters, the best way to help a baby grow up bilingual is for each parent to speak one language to them. I’ve seen this work a lot, whereas with my own son, he learned neither Danish (which we speak around the house), nor Armenian, which I spoke to him off and on when he was little. Good luck! (And don’t worry-it’ll all be fine 😄)
You have a very kind and gentle soul and I love your energy, I feel that you will get far in life. But Just so you know there are haters everywhere just dnt listen to them and keep doing what you love i wish the very best for you and your family please stay safe, enjoy the little things and just enjoy life. I really do wish the best for you😊. (Greetings from Texas)
Rie: I would love you forever if you'd do a detailed video on making macarons. I wanna do them, but they're complicated. Ingredients are somewhat expensive, so each failed attempt is a chunk of lost money on a product you can't do anything with.
Rie has her Make It Fancy: Candy Corn Macaron video. Alix also has a "Making a Giant Macaron" video that has a lot of tips that apply to normal macaron making. Hope this helps!
Hi Miss Rie, I'm Jade the new subscriber to your channel and I really love love love you and your cooking as well, I saw watching you on Tasty; you're fantastic! I wish you all the best for the holiday and be safe as well!
Rie, I don't know if you've done this before, but you should try recreating a dish from the anime Food Wars! I love cooking and baking and I've learned a lot of tricks and new dishes watching that anime 💗
2:02 Just cook meat with soy sauce, mirin, garlic and/or onion, and salt (and sake I think but I didn't have this) then you have yourself an easy Japanese dish. I realized then when I cooked Katsudon, Tonkatsu, and Teriyaki.

This is very true, this should be very emphasized.
Actually. It would be better if they spoke in both in equal proportions. Teach him to speak both.
