Rotobrush 1 was trash. Could never hold a selection, and it would end up taking as much time to create a matte as it would just using masks. I'm always finding myself having to redraw the rotobrush matte for every single frame. I hope Rotobrush 2 is better.
But do you have an "idea" or a time estimation regarding for how long it takes for the beta to become an official update and being released?? What is it usually like (timewise)? approx how many weeks?
Adarsh Chandran yo could you help when i render a regular video with no masking it renders perfectly but when i mask a video the video doesnt render fully
Damn! As someone who literally spent 5 hours rotoscoping frame by frame last night with the mask tool I am SUPER HYPED for this! Thanks for another amazing tutorial Ian, you da man!
I once spent 14 hours rotoing a clip, 8 seconds long, 30fps. After the second crash. I never roto'd again, until now. But it also crashed while working through this tut.
I've watched over six videos on this and I didn't get it until I stumbled on your channel. Thanks bro and it's fun with your video. You also earned yourself a new subscriber.
A M A Z I N G !!! I have to say I kept waiting for you to notice and take out the background area between his arm. Thanks so much for this awesome showcase vid!
Love Rotobrush 2. Thanks for doing this easy-to-follow demo. I've had moderate success with Rotobrush 1, but this is huge leap forward. It blew my mind to see how well the chatter reduction works. Adobe, I am impressed...again. I no longer dread having to roto a shot.
I had a very difficult time roto-ing a dark monster face and separating the facial elements (lower jaw, upper teeth, upper face, etc.) and roto v1 was SLOW and very tedious to see how the smoothness of the roto would look in motion. This tutorial convinced me to port over to AE 17.1.3 beta to try the roto brush v2, and I'm so thankful I did. The roto speed is remarkably faster and more responsive, and scrubbing in full resolution was a breeze compared to before. Your tips on editing the mask after the roto brush is finished was super helpful-I wasn't following that before and some pesky problems went away after adopting that workflow. Million thanks for this great tutorial!
I watched your tut soo IN TIME, made a rotoscope with the first version rotobrush and it was so bad.. Just now I'm trying the second version and it works PERFECTLY on my video. Thank you!!
Thanks! The problem I am having with rotobrush is that I am trying to cut out subjects from photos and then adding motion to the subject in the photo. The issue is now that I have 7 photos in a collage, the rotobrush propagating is taking a long time to run, and I cannot see any of my work on the screen. How can someone improve the propogation process speed so that I can play through my composition to check the motion?
Seems easy with a man not moving so fast with attached short hair. I would like to see how it can handle with a woman moving with long hair or with some fast movements like someone dancing or jumping all the way up.
This is Epic! There is a Twiki that I have been wanting to add to my bit Alert but I almost threw my laptop across the room because of Roto1!! Let’s see how Roto 2 works with bad quality pixelation lol. Missed ya dude! Welcome back! Stay easy!
Great tutorial. Thanks. I have a painting in the background that I am trying to change. Hands exchange some papers in front of the painting. I want to keep the 2 people, and rest of art gallery in the shot but get rid of the painting. I tried using 2.0 and all the info here (and there) but the rotoscope just jitters and jumps no matter how many times I go over it (about 8 hours and counting), partly because the tones in the faces and hands are quite similar to those in the painting I want to scope out. It would be great to be able to have the rotoscope 'read' a more contrasty background (red alpha overlay, for example) AND be able to see your original drawn lines. Possible? It's also STILL extremely frustrating to have to wait for the propagation time and time again, every time you make a few small changes. Any way to avoid the constant rendering until you're finally ready to freeze it? So far, for a rather complex and longish (5 seconds) clip, there isn't a lot of difference between 1.0 and 2.0 for me.
Excellent tutorial and "Thank you!" However what kept throwing me off is when you instructed and said 'CONTROL' key plus click & drag to change brush size and 'CONTROL' key plus right / left arrow to go to next frame. I think you meant the 'Command' key in addition to the other actions?
When rotobrush 1 came out when i was in art school the entire class was basically on the same page, eh, this is a really cool idea but its going to be absolutely amazing once they improve it. Looks like that day is finally here
hey there!! nice video!!! I just have some issues. I did step by step what you said. Did the selection with roto, duplicated the layer, erased rotoscoped from the first layer... worked perfect!! Now I need to do some changes. but I can't unfreeze the first layer BEACUSE I DELETED the roto from it. So how can I do some changes???? Thanks
Hey! They're telling me to redefine my composition on 16,667 i/s whenever I try rotobrushing, otherwise it'll crash and I have no idea how to do that :( could you help me?
Here's a question: I've got a locked-off camera, totally static, showing the background only. I've also got the exact same camera position, but with a person in the foreground. Why isn't there a tool that will compare both plates and simply alpha out whatever is the same in both? SUPER SIMPLE. I've got a really long shot, and under this scenario it should be so much simpler than struggling with busted RotoBrush1.
i dont know why people hate on rotobrush i love it but rotobrush 2 is gonna be so sweet just finished 7 clips rotobrushing my talent from the background wish rotobrush 2 had been there
Thanks for explaining rotobrush 2. Doing a frame by frame touch up is tedious though when you have a 5 minute video to lift the dancers off. I expect to spend my next few lifetimes completing it :S
Hi! Love your work! So, I am very much new to all this and nailed the rotobrush edit BUT I need to start the video masking from a certain point to put in a new background whilst ensuring the original is still intact for the first few seconds. How do I do that?
Does this work if you don't open the comp from Premiere. Like if you just roto in AE? My background just doesn't seem to go away. Hoping to see if it worked in Premiere after the freeze renders. Nice work explaining.
Yes, much to get excited about, with or without the consumption of cups of coffee, or red cordial. Or perhaps not? Regardless of the media hype surrounding Adobe's release of Roto Brush 2, the example shown (above) is a simple exercise in rotoscoping. Too often tutorials in After Effects' Roto Brush rely on clean, easily read subjects to be cut out, with little motion blur and no over pass of moving objects. If Adobe and their preferred tutorial makers really wish to impress with Roto Brush, they will demonstrate how to cut out "problem" moving objects, that are in compositions that last more than a few seconds.
It can 100% be done! I tried this on A LOT of stuff - if you go to the end of the video you can see a sped up version of me roto-ing snoop dogg dancing on the ellen show and it worked at near flawless execution in 1/50th the time it would have taken me to do manually. It can also track subjects being obscured by foreground objects fairly well too. I would say give it a shot yourself to really see!
Is there a way to roto out a part that is not part of the part that you want to roto out? Like if for example you were outside and you had your arms by your side like and could see the background, how would you be able to roto out that tiny area of the background in between your arms?
Hey nice! I'm having this issue where I have let it propegate and it looks great where it goes green, but then I want to make a small change to minus something in the middle of my shot but then it starts propegatong again through the entire shot which I don't want it to do. I just wanted to correct that one frame before I freeze it. How can I correct one frame without the roto tool propegating through all the frames again (which is quite a long clip)
i just leaned the baiscs of after effects i want to start tracking the masks now LOL there are a ton of dfference methods, whats the differenc between 3d tracking and rotobrush or the tracking panel? im not sure what to use for what...
Hi sir. I ust want to ask if I can rotoscope a 1 minute video? the video came from premiere pro and I just clicked the " replace with after effects composition"? to go straight to AE? thank you sir.
Thanks for this video. The original Rotobrush failed me virtually every time I used it. After watching so many tutorials, and trying to master Rotobrush V1, I finally gave up and avoided it altogether. I do see an improvement in edge quality with Rotobrush V2 in AE2022, but on my iMac Pro it crawls at an incredibly slow pace with 4K footage. Every time I create a brush stroke there is a 4 to 6 second lag before the stroke appears on screen. Any suggestions on which settings I can disable or adjust to improve performance?
Which version of Adobe after effects will rotobrush 2 be in exactly? (Assuming it officially releases after the beta)
You can download After Effects Beta from the Creative Cloud app! There's a little science / beaker icon where you can explore beta apps!
Knowing its adobe, its their newest paywall cloud version.
Rotobrush 1 was trash. Could never hold a selection, and it would end up taking as much time to create a matte as it would just using masks. I'm always finding myself having to redraw the rotobrush matte for every single frame. I hope Rotobrush 2 is better.

OOF - should have waited 1 more day :P
I come back to this video every time I need a refresher on rotobrush 2.
I once spent 14 hours rotoing a clip, 8 seconds long, 30fps. After the second crash. I never roto'd again, until now. But it also crashed while working through this tut.
Update: Clear adobe AE Cache before each roto project, also convert video into tiff seq seems to be more stable doing those two items.
thats why u spam save
Feel for you bro; doing a 5 minute video myself. I may not survive to completion
I spent two full days and still having problems

I like how you made the guy walk away 8:24 haha.

Yaay, another awesome tutorial from my favorite RUclips. Love your content man... keep making more !!
Thank you for watching!
I watched 3 prior roto vids b4 this, and my friend this was most easiest to grasp understand and follow. Thank bro ✊🏾
I watched your tut soo IN TIME, made a rotoscope with the first version rotobrush and it was so bad.. Just now I'm trying the second version and it works PERFECTLY on my video. Thank you!!
Don't thank me! Thank the After Effects team lol
you're the first youtuber to showcase this.. awesome :P
Are you a wizard?
With rotobrush 2, yes!
This bay far the best tutorial i have seen in 2020 thank you so much i really needed this your the best thank you.
Just got After Effects to go along with Premier, nice to have so many tutorials from you!
There's a lot to watch ;)
wow thank you ive skipped rotobrush coz my entire experience on rotobrush 1 is a nightmare...... BUT MAAAN This ROTOBRUSH 2 is AWESOMETACULAR!
I havent even tried the rotobrush 2 tool yet but im positive that it will work fine. Thanks for the tutorial!!
wow such a fun guy like how you showed everything with ease
I tried to hit the like button 2-3 times, but I realized that I've already hitted it!! Great tutorial and great effect!!
came across this video on my recommendations, watched it, saw that you were wearing a sweet Team Liquid shirt, then found out you work there! SUBBED.

Thanks so much! Was getting frustrated with difference matte.... Had a very busy background.
I haven't even learned rotobrush 1 yet! 😅 I'm gonna go learn it now so I can upgrade to rotobrush 2 and be super impressed. Great video!
This tutorial was thorough I want to scream. I love it. Got me unstuck on something I'm working on thank you.
I love the way you teach, entertaining yet informative.
Holy hell... Adobe should give you a truckload of money because this is an amazing tut!
That's one way to push your videos to 10 minutes. Talk about everything! XD
Which for the most part was beneficial for those who are more curious.
Seems easy with a man not moving so fast with attached short hair. I would like to see how it can handle with a woman moving with long hair or with some fast movements like someone dancing or jumping all the way up.
around 3 minutes into this video there is a pretty good example of someone with lots of movement! ruclips.net/video/uUwOV1v8zBg/видео.html
Plus the whole source clip was 1.5 seconds. If even that.
Cinecom has a video with a dancer with pretty quick moves. It worked perfect for them.
@@ayby17 Is anyone doing it not in 1080? Cause in 6k footage it's slow as hell.
Or a guy stationery. But holding a football and moves arms to 90degrees... I gave up 😖
FINALY I CAN CHANGE THE SIZE OF MY BRUSH!! THANK YOOOOU!
Thank you for the time stamps. Helps a lot
I legitimately just found out about this feature like... yesterday. Time to go back and do my entire catalog! lol
After effect is a life saving for years.

Everything I wanted to know and nothing I didn't - great tutorial!
Just used rotobrush on a meme. Very happy with how well it works
Kudos for the Team Liquid shirt
I haven’t heard of Rotobrush until right now and its basically premieres equivalent of the quick selection tool in photoshop

fantastic.. i love rotobrush 2
Lemme just say, Jump Street movies were waaaay better than I ever expected. I've watched those movies ten times. I think I will go for 11 now.

Excellent tutorial and "Thank you!" However what kept throwing me off is when you instructed and said 'CONTROL' key plus click & drag to change brush size and 'CONTROL' key plus right / left arrow to go to next frame. I think you meant the 'Command' key in addition to the other actions?
