They're not animals, but I agree. don't know much about bacteria, but fungi are super complex indeed. What they can do to your mind and body if you eat them is just amazing.
Let's hope not, I don't want to end up with a mushroom growing out of my head XD.
I actually take cordyceps as a supplement and it is amazing, I literally have about 20% more endurance, a ton of energy and I don't get sick. It boosts your immune system and makes ATP (which is basically the end product that your body uses for energy).
I don't know if you ever took psychedelic mushrooms, but it feels like it has even more intelligence than a human being. Those things are so mysteriously complex.

I did some research. Of those wondering what the infected in The Last of Us feel inside while ripping apart flesh, an insect (in real life) after being infected by the cordyceps, their muscles are being controlled by the roots of the fungus. The insect is still conscious, and their brains are (probably) not effected. According to National Geographic, the insect is being “forced” to clamp onto a tree in perfect condition. In this case, the host is being “forced” to tear apart human flesh and devour it. The people infected are most likely fully aware of what they are doing and have no idea what they are going to do next, considering the fact that they are taken over.
@@Oi-bg9bc You know what they ment
Im pretty sure that the infected humans in the last of us actually do die when they are infected because the cordyceps in the game does go for the brain and thats why Ellie would have died if they made a vaccine but I see what you are saying because although I dont know the source I read in an article that cordyceps kills nerves and puts itself in the place of where the neurons would be and controls your muscels that way.

@@peterchae9678 Virus ≠ Fungus
@@peterchae9678 depends on how you define deadly. Some people die of normal flu every year and nobody calls it a deadly virus.
The lat of us infection is based of this fungus
Well, there are still a number of things that stop us from easily being infected. This is an insect parasite and would have little preparation for the mechanics of puppeting a human body. The only options would be an astronomically unlikely mutation, A jump ladder akin to many current human diseases (although its foreign nature would require an incredibly long and convoluted one), or purposeful human alteration. Although, even then an apocalypse would be difficult. Just as with the bugs, the fungus would simply compel humans to climb up shaded buildings or trees to prepare for the fungus to sprout, and the behavior is far too unusual to let it go unnoticed long enough for the mushrooms to actually bloom in a heavily populated area. Ironically, they are actually being studied to help humanity, as the chemical they use to kill living cells to replace them has been isolated. On it's own, all it does is enter a cell, replace a chemical in DNA, causing it to malfunction, and kill it. scientists theorize it could be used to treat leukemia, and it is being tested as such. Even more ironically considering the pandemic we currently face, Caterpillar cordyceps are a staple of traditional Chinese medicine, and are ingested for several ailments (although no research has been done on any actual effects)
I'm so glad my species has an adaptive immune system and a lymphatic system so I don't have to worry about brain mushrooms.

Well, to be fair, its emphasised that it's other humans, not the cordyceps, that can prove more dangerous to people
The directors did say that the concept art for the Infected did basically start from this :)
There were few cures for the human infecting cordycep and it wasn't capable of remorse, pity or fear, so I'd say it's far more dangerous than any person. Humanity will continue to destroy itself with or without some sci fi fungus, but it will also prevail.
For normal cordyceps it would take weeks or months to be fatal to humans
There is no rationale at all for mankind prevailing over every disaster. Far more likely is that climate change will "prevail", by invasive species migrating to new territories (like the USA) with no natural enemies...
The "Last of US" series only makes this BBC documentary more scary, the reality of an event like this on humans.Scary stuff!
Had it not been for this video, "The Last of Us" would not have existed. You deserve some of the credit too, BBC.
One of the most elegantly horrific things I've ever seen. Nature truly is amazing.
2:40 This is surprisingly beautiful. Dam nature, pretty but deadly.
This is one of the most terrifying things in nature. Nature is beautiful, but can be horrific.
The Last Of Ants
More like the plants vs ants
i cant believe how intelligent ants are!
They say if ants were the size of dogs they would be the dominant species
@@mkchamp9645 they're extremely smart, extremely strong and work well as a unit... I'm glad they're tiny lol
@@mkchamp9645 you're scaring me 😨
Anyone else here just from their own research and not some video or referral by someone else?

More like Cordyceps: Human Edition
Anyone else here because you watched Last of us and googled what cordyceps were
OMG THAT'S A CLICKER!!!!!!!!!!!!
be careful that it doesn't become a bloater o.O
I love how beautiful the music is but how deadly the thing that's being shown is, one hell of a juxtaposition.
Indeed
It's sort of beautiful, in a macabre sort of way
This video soon will be very popular...
The last of us!

+Nathan Hills My wife has bought me the PS4 remaster for Christmas so I can't wait! 👍
Jeff MusicMan Nice ,I can't wait Uncharted 4,I love this games! 🔝✌
Nathan Hills Me too. Uncharted 4 looks amazing. Another one for my collection 👍
***** Awesome. I love it too, in fact I'm doing a walkthrough of the game on youtube at the moment and having a right laugh lol. ruclips.net/video/HfRrokifNrI/видео.html Chloe Mortez would be perfect for the role. Do you know who is playing Ellie?
What organization are those ants into?
Jackson?
Fireflies?
WLF? Scars? Rattlers? The Raven? 🤔
Or Fedra or the serapithes
Fedra solos
It would be terrifying if this happened to humans. And thus the last of us began.
The reason it infects insects is because they have a much more simple immune system compared to larger animals like birds or mammals or humans, it's not to say it couldn't happen it's just very unlikely
On the low
It has. They are called ***s and you know who they are.
@@TucsonDude can you uncensor that please, i have no idea what you’re talking about
@@pinweta22 maybe we can accelerate that to couple years lol
Thank you BBC and Sir David, you have again combined the macabre with pleasant music to create beautiful images of life emerging straight out of death, its amasing.
the music is so beautiful
You know the name of the music?
I want to know too
@@Chazza_1201 It's called Cordyceps on the planet earth soundtrack album by George Fenton
Everyone: Thank god this disease is for insects only
Scientists: *shows evidence that the disease may evolve to infect humans*
The opening scene to the Last of Us show further implies it may be possible
Everyone: Say sike right now!
Play The Last of Us
Dr. DeadPool If that happens, make sure there’s a group called The Fireflies. And make sure you have a friend named Joel that has a new daughter named Ellie.
And make sure you have a good PS controller
@@spirit2218 lol hahaha
It can evolve or mutate it’s way to infecting humans, but it’s very unlikely.
“It can wipe out a whole colony” ,“Each of them only specialize one species. ” OMG this is really scary, one day if any type of these cordyceps mutating toward human, this is THE LAST OF US.....
Ooooof
They've no started putting it in mushroom teas.
"So if that happens...?"
"We lose"
Insects are still here - insects are by far the most numerous species on earth - if a strain of cordyceps infected humans it would be in that strain of fungus's own interest not to wipe us out, just infect enough of humanity to ensure the fungus could progress to the next batch of humanity - so (some of us) would still exist to hopefully eventually develop a vaccine against it!
