I 100% agree. Men are demeaned so much these days in society. But most dads are awesome and love their children so much. My dad was a strong, hardworking, manly guy. But he was also very loving, taught my brothers and me discipline/respect, great example, and he treated my mom like a queen. Dad's are so important.

I find all of Unsolved Mysteries entertaining and fascinating, but those reunion stories in particular show just how amazing this program was. It brought so much happiness to so many families who had been separated. A mother and daughter reunited in such joy. Love it.
I cannot imagine what it would feel to be separated from your baby girl. That must've been a nightmare. While they cannot get those lost years back, I hope they built a positive relationship from then on. You could tell mother and daughter bonded instantly.

I posted a comment a few years a go but I'm rewatching the series so I just remembered that I had found Laura's obituary and it didn't mention Delia. Made me sad because I assume they had a falling out after the reunion. I also remember when I searched them their Facebook's popped up and they weren't on private or anything so I was looking at their pictures and neither ever posted each other.

Wow, John Novotny ended up being an inspiration to that little boy and millions others years later when his story was told on UM. A kind and decent man who was very selfless. No wonder he was a salesman, he could really connect with people.
Annette's story is just heartbreaking..... I am grown man and it almost brings me to tears thinking about what this poor woman went through. On some level I think she knew she was in grave danger, but she just decided to put her kids in a safe place and try to maybe live as normal a life as possible for as long as possible. It just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the fear and terror she must have felt in those final moments. At least she had the courage to try and make a run for it. I just don't understand how Jim Burnside did not get the death penalty.
If it was a plea deal and Jim pleaded no contest, it’s likely that’s why he got life. That guy was evil and selfish. The re-enactment from this story is always one I feel sobered watching.

Wow. My husband is from that same small town (and his brother is about the same age) so this was a really personal case for him (I remember when the newer developments came about a few years ago). Seeing the poster is kind of chilling (especially out in a Nevada station). They also think the guy that did it had been driving around the neighborhood they grew up in spying on other kids as others recognized him after it all came out.

So if you have a person afraid to go to jail, a protective order might help you. But if you have someone that doesn't give a d*** about the cops, court, protective orders,etc , you have to decide to do something to help yourself. Protective orders are for the court room. Weapons and defense strategies are for your personal safety outside on the street. Just Facts.

I've watched Unsolved Mysteries ever since the 80's and was particularly fascinated by the "lost loves" section. My family of origin was very toxic, but I loved the idea of nice blood relatives waiting me for out there. This month my husband gave me a DNA test for a 13th wedding anniversary gift. I made a tree on Ancestry and added 450 relatives in the first week. The second week, I saw a picture of my great grandpa...so young and standing in a picture with a pretty bride I didn't recognize. Underneath, a caption with wedding date and a first wife, I didn't know about. I reached out to the owner of the picture. I found out there was a first wife and son in the family line. They filed physical abuse and cruelty charges against my great grandpa and won in court. There was a divorce, they left the toxic, and my then dysfunctional family of origin spent the next few generations ignoring their existence. This line of the family literally lives an hour away. My daughter and I just met them a few days ago. It was really great to connect! They had no idea that my great grandpa kept them a secret, they thought absolutely nobody wanted to know them! Well, I do.💞

That Delia story is terrifying. To think that outside authorities like parents and the church were able to exert such overwhelming control over a woman who was a legal adult. She even considered that she was giving up her child "unwillingly!" It's so hard to understand just a few generations later why she didn't assert her rights and walk right out of the situation.
It wasn't the cops fault at all. The laws enacted by judges at the time didn't protect women enough. I know it's in style to blame police for everything. But it was our elected officials fault, not the police. You could tell in the police officers eyes that he wish he could've done more, but the stupid, lax laws at the time just wouldn't let them.

40:38-41:27, one of the most satisfying update reenactments in UM. I loved how Burnside was still handcuffed against his truck even though the sheriff shot him twice, hopefully Burnside felt a lot of pain from those wounds.
I’m so frustrated with the story of Annette and Jim. If Annette knew and saw how dangerous he was, why the hell would she come back to Florida! She had a clean escape and he had no idea where she was. Annette gave Jim an easy way to find her. Sad.

I think most victims don't really think the perpetrator will kill them even the violent ones 30 years ago I threatened to divorce my husband and was filling out the papers at the time. He never indicated he would harm me. When I see stories about women being killed at this stage in the relationship, I feel it could have happened to me. My spouse was a drug addict. He died before the divorce was final. But I never thought he would harm either but I'm not so sure.
Segment 2: That guy faked his amnesia to get out of the legal trouble and other responsibilities. He was given 3 numbers from UM to call, his father, wife, and mother. He called his mother whom he was most likely to sucker. He never called the others. He refused to be reunited with his now ex-wife and children and remained in the Las Vegas area after serving his 90 days imprisonment in Boise. He had a heart attack in 2007 that left him in a vegetative state. This info is from his ex-wife who has posted in the comments for the original episode where this story aired.

24:35 awkward is right....what happened is pretty easy to surmise: he had to make a delivery of frozen food in Las Vegas. He got the money for the shipment and had the bright idea to make some profit for himself by gambling with the money. He loses the money (big surprise), then decides to disappear and go underground, living on the streets. He probably thought he could find a job and get on his feet, but without an identity, Social Security, driver's license, etc. there is no chance of finding work. When being broke and staying in homeless shelters grew unbearable, he decides he wants to return to Boise, and somehow comes up with the bright idea to fake amnesia, hoping it will somehow absolve him of his stupidity. He couldn't say the shipment was hijacked, because he had made the delivery and gotten paid. If he had acted right away he maybe could have ditched the truck and claimed he was robbed, but he waited too long after ditching the truck, laying low, wandering the streets of Vegas, trying to figure out what the hell to do. When he finally hit his breaking point and decided to go home to mommy, all he could say is he lost his memory and had no idea what happened to the truck or the money. Dumbass.

On the night of the broadcast, two viewers contacted the telecenter to report that Jim was living in Shelby County, Alabama, under the assumed name Al Wilson. He was working at a flea market at the time. The next morning, federal authorities arrived there. He noticed them and ran to his pickup truck. He pulled out a gun and began firing at them. They fired back and struck him twice. He was arrested and sent to a nearby hospital. Apparently, Jim had seen the broadcast as he told his coworkers the day he was arrested that he anticipated having problems that day. He was convicted of assaulting a federal officer and then returned to Florida. He pleaded no contest to Annette's murder and the attempted one of Dave. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He died there on November 27, 2015.

Delia's father was a jerk, to put it mildly. Paul Beal, most likely, had either a severe breakdown or other stress induced amnesia episode. He did what he did, but without knowing details it isn't surprising that the show didn't delve into what cannot be proven. Jim Bearnside was a predator and what happened to Annette never should have happened. The fact he didn't do it again was a miracle, but it was only a matter of time so it is good he was finally caught.

Paul beal tricked off his employer's money in Vegas. He called his mother because she is the one babying him. She even said he's made many mistakes but not anything criminal. Just keep making excuses for a grown ass man , married with children. His daddy didn't go down to that jail cause he already knew his azz was lying. Further research (Google) showed he didn't even want to reunite to get to know his wife. That dude got serious psychological issues and it's not amnesia. The last story, "Thanks Big Brother", makes me SO happy! It's SO wonderful to see a story where an older man took an interest in a boy's life and was a proper fatherly or brotherly figure to the boy, rather then taking advantage of him! Thank God for men like John Novotny!
Jeff's story about his father is so sad. It warms my heart that he was more interested in finding John than his father. Kudos to John to putting so much time and devotion to Jeff.
I met my big sister at age 10 she has given me so much confidence and her husband was also a great role model...best thing that ever happened to me!!

Interesting fact - America's Most Wanted aired Jim Burnside's case three times - the first time in July 1988, only five months after Annette's murder, all without success. And the actor that portrayed Jim on UM did the same on AMW.
There's so many stories on UM about terrible guys, it's nice to see a gentle guy with great positive impact in the Big Brother story.
It’s so heartwarmingly amazing the number of people who have had closure of one sort or another to this show. 35 closures in the 1st season!! It’s too bad that there isn’t another show of this type now
I find all of Unsolved Mysteries entertaining and fascinating, but those reunion stories in particular show just how amazing this program was. It brought so much happiness to so many families who had been separated. A mother and daughter reunited in such joy. Love it.
After watching this show at 1:00 am, while my roommates sleep, I'm now convinced there's no media more chilling than that opening theme song.

I posted a comment a few years a go but I'm rewatching the series so I just remembered that I had found Laura's obituary and it didn't mention Delia. Made me sad because I assume they had a falling out after the reunion. I also remember when I searched them their Facebook's popped up and they weren't on private or anything so I was looking at their pictures and neither ever posted each other.

As tragic and horrifying as this case was, that very line gets me every time.
We all know that Jim Burnside spent the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Annette but reportedly, jail was not very kind to him.
He died behind bars in 2015.
Another mf who lived too long or, better yet, should never been even born, and whatever happened to him in jail wasn't enough.
I still can't help being angry with Annette's parents. I dare a 46 year old man to come sniffing around my teenage daughter and yet this mom is just like "well Annette loved him!!!".
It is amazing they didn’t put their foot down and gave into that “well she loved him”.

Wow, John Novotny ended up being an inspiration to that little boy and millions others years later when his story was told on UM. A kind and decent man who was very selfless. No wonder he was a salesman, he could really connect with people.

Annette's story is just heartbreaking..... I am grown man and it almost brings me to tears thinking about what this poor woman went through. On some level I think she knew she was in grave danger, but she just decided to put her kids in a safe place and try to maybe live as normal a life as possible for as long as possible. It just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the fear and terror she must have felt in those final moments. At least she had the courage to try and make a run for it. I just don't understand how Jim Burnside did not get the death penalty.
If it was a plea deal and Jim pleaded no contest, it’s likely that’s why he got life.

Wow. My husband is from that same small town (and his brother is about the same age) so this was a really personal case for him (I remember when the newer developments came about a few years ago). Seeing the poster is kind of chilling (especially out in a Nevada station). They also think the guy that did it had been driving around the neighborhood they grew up in spying on other kids as others recognized him after it all came out.

I don't think he was trying to make anyone feel defeated but at some point we have to empower ourselves with more than just calling the cops. They typically don't arrive until AFTER a crime is committed. Domestic situations are complex. No cops are watching victims 24/7. Those are facts. Cops got to follow the law. So if you have a person afraid to go to jail, a protective order might help you. But if you have someone that doesn't give a d*** about the cops, court, protective orders,etc , you have to decide to do something to help yourself. Protective orders are for the court room. Weapons and defense strategies are for your personal safety outside on the street. Just Facts.

In the 80's and 90's families had to use Unsolved Mysteries to find lost family members. Today we have the internet and DNA! Sometimes progress is good!

I've watched Unsolved Mysteries ever since the 80's and was particularly fascinated by the "lost loves" section. My family of origin was very toxic, but I loved the idea of nice blood relatives waiting me for out there. This month my husband gave me a DNA test for a 13th wedding anniversary gift. I made a tree on Ancestry and added 450 relatives in the first week. The second week, I saw a picture of my great grandpa...so young and standing in a picture with a pretty bride I didn't recognize. Underneath, a caption with wedding date and a first wife, I didn't know about. I reached out to the owner of the picture. I found out there was a first wife and son in the family line. They filed physical abuse and cruelty charges against my great grandpa and won in court. There was a divorce, they left the toxic, and my then dysfunctional family of origin spent the next few generations ignoring their existence. This line of the family literally lives an hour away. My daughter and I just met them a few days ago. It was really great to connect! They had no idea that my great grandpa kept them a secret, they thought absolutely nobody wanted to know them! Well, I do.💞

That Delia story is terrifying. To think that outside authorities like parents and the church were able to exert such overwhelming control over a woman who was a legal adult. She even considered that she was giving up her child "unwillingly!" It's so hard to understand just a few generations later why she didn't assert her rights and walk right out of the situation.

It wasn't the cops fault at all. The laws enacted by judges at the time didn't protect women enough. I know it's in style to blame police for everything. But it was our elected officials fault, not the police. You could tell in the police officers eyes that he wish he could've done more, but the stupid, lax laws at the time just wouldn't let them.

40:38-41:27, one of the most satisfying update reenactments in UM. I loved how Burnside was still handcuffed against his truck even though the sheriff shot him twice, hopefully Burnside felt a lot of pain from those wounds.
I’m so frustrated with the story of Annette and Jim. If Annette knew and saw how dangerous he was, why the hell would she come back to Florida! She had a clean escape and he had no idea where she was. Annette gave Jim an easy way to find her. Sad.
I’m sure there’s other context behind the decision other than what we can readily see. She probably feared extensively for her parents who were also threatened by this guy, and felt it was unacceptable to have them possibly murdered and felt responsible if anything happened to them. I think most victims don't really think the perpetrator will kill them even the violent ones 30 years ago I threatened to divorce my husband and was filling out the papers at the time. He never indicated he would harm me. When I see stories about women being killed at this stage in the relationship, I feel it could have happened to me. My spouse was a drug addict. He died before the divorce was final. But I never thought he would harm either but I'm not so sure.
The first story broke my heart.
Segment 2: That guy faked his amnesia to get out of the legal trouble and other responsibilities. He was given 3 numbers from UM to call, his father, wife, and mother. He called his mother whom he was most likely to sucker. He never called the others.
He refused to be reunited with his now ex-wife and children and remained in the Las Vegas area after serving his 90 days imprisonment in Boise. He had a heart attack in 2007 that left him in a vegetative state.

His estranged wife that he hasn't seen in 2 years? Who intends to hear from their spouse that they are estranged from? If he really did know her, of course he wouldn't want to talk to her, but if he didn't remember her (and I don't think he did) he likely figured there was a reason they'd been estranged for 2 years.
And do you know him personally to know who would believe him? You know his mother and father? You realize that most people on general though when asked to pick between parents, usually choose their mothers. Since he grew up in a time where mother's were the prominent figures in their children's lives as they more often stated home to care for the children over fathers, he likely figured she'd know more about him.
It boggles the mind that she went back to some dead-job where he could easily find her after she got away.

24:35 awkward is right....what happened is pretty easy to surmise: he had to make a delivery of frozen food in Las Vegas. He got the money for the shipment and had the bright idea to make some profit for himself by gambling with the money. He loses the money (big surprise), then decides to disappear and go underground, living on the streets. He probably thought he could find a job and get on his feet, but without an identity, Social Security, driver's license, etc. there is no chance of finding work. When being broke and staying in homeless shelters grew unbearable, he decides he wants to return to Boise, and somehow comes up with the bright idea to fake amnesia, hoping it will somehow absolve him of his stupidity. He couldn't say the shipment was hijacked, because he had made the delivery and gotten paid. If he had acted right away he maybe could have ditched the truck and claimed he was robbed, but he waited too long after ditching the truck, laying low, wandering the streets of Vegas, trying to figure out what the hell to do. When he finally hit his breaking point and decided to go home to mommy, all he could say is he lost his memory and had no idea what happened to the truck or the money. Dumbass.

He was working at a flea market at the time. The next morning, federal authorities arrived there. He noticed them and ran to his pickup truck. He pulled out a gun and began firing at them. They fired back and struck him twice. He was arrested and sent to a nearby hospital.
Apparently, Jim had seen the broadcast as he told his coworkers the day he was arrested that he anticipated having problems that day. He was convicted of assaulting a federal officer and then returned to Florida. He pleaded no contest to Annette's murder and the attempted one of Dave. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He died there on November 27, 2015.

Jim Bearnside was a predator and what happened to Annette never should have happened. The fact he didn't do it again was a miracle, but it was only a matter of time so it is good he was finally caught.

Paul beal tricked off his employer's money in Vegas. He called his mother because she is the one babying him. She even said he's made many mistakes but not anything criminal. Just keep making excuses for a grown ass man , married with children. His daddy didn't go down to that jail cause he already knew his azz was lying. Further research (Google) showed he didn't even want to reunite to get to know his wife. That dude got serious psychological issues and it's not amnesia. That officer told him a warrant was going to be issued for him and in 3 days ,so he knew he was in trouble. He made up that ruse. Sounds like a confused teenager when he don't want to do something but his mama seems to be a huge part of why he feigns illnesses.
