    I feel like the gimbal makes a ton of sense to get smoother longer motions. I have to say though I really like the handheld most, but I think it was purely the editing... great video!!

    They are both really good, but I feel like you cannot really compare them because they have a completely different vibe and music

    • @WargodFilms
      @WargodFilms 5 лет назад +4

      Yea good point not just the vibe and music but the look handheld gives you that realism look to it. What do ch plays a big role and gimble gives you better and longer extended shots when needed it just comes down to the look your trying to create

    • @GabrieleNunnari
      @GabrieleNunnari 5 лет назад +2

      the reality is that you cannot really compare it, just because both the systems give you 2 completely different way to film in hand held you need to do short clips and found a way to attach them, with gimbal is all more controlled but you have the downside of gear and portability.

    • @MrKurtay
      @MrKurtay 5 лет назад +2

      I agree and the point of having a gimbal is to walk with it to see if it works or not. Both clips are mostly static, so no need a gimbal in my opinion. Ladies have failed ( :D ) show us more difficult tasks a gimbal can/not handle the topic.

    I like gimbals cause they give us the option to let shots breath more during editing. Going hand held, you have to cut when it starts to shake or warp stabilization starts looking warpy.
    But it's nice not having to carry all that equipment too. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @martydenson_mfm

    Handheld looks like you need to make your edits with shorter clips, do more speed ramping and SloMo to pull it off but it works. Nice job though!

  • @Chazyfizzlez

    The gimbal shots felt like I was watching a story that was being told. The handheld shots felt like I watching a commercial due to the shorter clips and trendy transitions.

    even if i hold my camera close to my body's centre of mass, very firmly but not too rigidly and allow my elbows to convert kinetic energy to heat by dampening the oscillation, my clips still come out like i have parkinson's disease. so i think gimbal is a must for me.

      It's an old OLD secret. What she did is shoot in 60FPS, interpreted footage to 30fps, then slowed it down again and used Optical Flow Frame Blending. That gives you silky smooth...I mean SUPER SMOOTH footage. Trust me...she isn't holding the camera any better than you. The title is BS.

    In realtime speed motion on the move, gimbal wins out 99%, but in slow mo hand held can look good too, as the imperfections don't show as readily obvious to the eye.

    A lot of people totally forget about the basics of composing a cinematic shot, as soon as they're holding a gimbal. You both did a great job. I personally love the handheld clip more. Although the shots are shorter in the handheld clip, the gimbal clip felt more restless because of the constant movement.

    Fairly new to shooting with a gimbal here - i feel like there's a new "language" to learn when using the gimbal.
    One thing i noticed when i saw your videos side-by-side, handheld tends to move "from behind" the camera. The gimbal move moves a bit behind behind the camera (if that makes any sense?). The gimbal tends to make me do the same shots over and over. Pans, tilts up/down, etc. at the same speed, the same move, and so on.
    Would be interesting to see this challenge again but none of you guys can shoot more than 24fps.

  • @machajohn
    @machajohn 5 лет назад +3

    Personally I prefer handheld and it's strictly because most of the things I film are run and gun/spur of the moment type things and staying handheld allows to me be the most nimble with my camera. For example, I could be snapping pics of a spot and then something happens I want to film. I imagine that transition would be significantly easier without a gimbal. That being said, I would love a chance one day with a gimbal on a whole storyboarded video. Awesome job both of you. The Palace of Fine Art is such a beautiful spot

    Surely using a camera that shoots 120fps helps massively in having super steady b-roll when handheld, it ends up looking as smooth as with a gimble. It'd be cool to see a vid like this on a cheaper camera that doesn't support 120.

  • @RCodyWanner
    @RCodyWanner 5 лет назад

    I really loved the handheld portion. But also the edit was faster. But as you mentioned, that was sort of a result of the fact that you couldn’t use longer shots in the edit because of the shake - so maybe handheld actually forces people to make faster paced videos, which I like - like it informs the whole feel of the vid. As I am sure you are going to mention, likely the best effect is gonna be mixing the two.

    Its like: "Tele or wideangle? Which lens is better?" First you decide what you want to shoot and what you want it to look like, then you figure out how to get there. Gimbals are clearly very usefull with smooth movements, but its getting really annoying if overused. Also there are stabilized cameras like the GH5, which allow you to do a lot without a gimbal.

    I will say, I definitely preferred the handheld edit, not just for the handheld...ness? but I'm more of a fan of the upbeat flow of it. I feel a filmmaker should have great handheld skills, but a gimbal is great for getting some really, buttery, silky gold and some shots that you sometimes just can't get (Or its just difficult doing) with handheld.

    I like to shoot with a gimbal mostly because it's easier, but I also notice a tendency to go for longer takes and sometimes the shots end up looking too languid to a point sometimes where there is a feeling of unreality to the shots already. Which makes me miss the somewhat shakiness of handheld that gives a feeling of nowness and of intruding on a hard reality. On analysis, it's the French New Wave style of handheld camerawork aesthetic fighting the Hollywood slickness in me.

    It's so hard to compare because the style is so different. I liked the Gimbal footage better personally but I wonder if I would feel differently if you both shot the same stuff. I can't use a gimbal because I don't have the strength and then my arms are super shakey. Got to do more push-ups I guess!

    Loved the throw away comment about a metal music vid, normally a music stills photographer but have a possible music video project coming up (as well as a general interest in getting into video more as well) so have been thinking of gimbals and what not.
    Loved both clips and can see how a combination of the two could also work together for their own qualities. Even in a metal music vid I could see a gimbal being useful for certain times of shots, even if chaotically cut with madness interspersed...
