    Good technique. When I reference, I throw an eq with a band soloing function on the reference track and find where the punch of the kick and snare is and match mine up with theirs.

    Bear in mind before you apply processing, most samples from packs or Splice already be processed with EQ, Compression etc...
    Do what works best in your mix when selecting inserts to enhance your already placed samples, lastly if you do apply processing be sure to gain match so you can make sure the process is actually adding value as even 1 to 2db louder can trick the ears to believing it sounds better.

    You said its fine if the signal is clipping in the plugin as long as it aint distorting in your ears, I don’t agree to that. There is a reason of those red clipping lights being there. No matter how it sounds to your ears, its still clipping and it matters. You don’t have to send the clipping signal to the next plugin you add to the chain cause then it would have the clipped signal being fed into it and you won’t have any room and it does affect the sound and overall track and how the plugins react to it, especially compressors. I got this from Warren Huart from Produce like a pro.
    The rest of the video is super informative! Keep em coming bro! Cheers!

    • @gijshenk2
      @gijshenk2 5 лет назад +1

      yea man, this is kinda true. You gotta gainstage a bit, some plugins work better if you feed them the right input level :)

    • @MarianoGabrielConti
      @MarianoGabrielConti 5 лет назад +4

      I disagree, it's all about your ears and the aesthetic you are pursuing, you can hear 40 Shebib talking about this in his Pensado interview, also guitar distortion are a good example of fucking things up work for certain genres and aesthetics.

    • @gijshenk2
      @gijshenk2 5 лет назад +2

      @@MarianoGabrielConti i completely agree, but that's a different case. i was talking about how a lot of analog emulation plugins work better in their purposed state (when fed a healthy level signal) because that's the main gig they're programmed for. For me it opened a few doors properly gainstaging my plugin chains and comparing them to chains which would clip after each plugin. Then again i still really agree with thrusting your ears.

    • @TheEkern
      @TheEkern 5 лет назад +1

      That's true, but red is also just a color. Let's use less time looking at the screen when mixing, and more time listening to what's happening. If it sounds good, it is good (at least to you).

    Love this video man. Thanks for the pointers. One thing I’d say is that clipping, as you already know, distorts the sound. So it won’t be in pitch and will not sound musical, and sometimes it might be difficult to decipher that using your ears.

    WHAT I REALLY WANT TO MASTER IS HOW TO GET A VOCAL SITTING PROPERLY ON A TRACK. GIVE IT THAT PRO SOUND. IVE WATCHED SEVERAL TUTORIALS AND I KNOW THAT REVERB AND DELAY IS USED FOR THAT EFFECT, SUBTLE. FOR EXAMPLE VOCAL FADER SLIGHTLY HIGHER THEN THE INSTRUMENTAL, AS IT SOUNDS THAT ITS SITTING ON TOP, USE A MONO AUX WITH A REVERB AND MAYBE ANOTHER MONO AUX WITH DELAY. THE MONO REVERB WILL PUSH IT FURTHER BACK (OR MAKE IT SEEM), THE DELAY TO GIVE IT SOME MOVEMENT.

    I respectfully disagree. Let your ears be your guide. Other records are unique unto themselves. If it sounds good to YOU then you're in the right place. Doesn't matter what anyone else is doing.
    Love your videos man. You do a great job. Doesn't mean I agree with everything all the time but I respect what you do. We're all trying to get better at it. My biggest pet peeve in this industry is that everyone is trying to sound the same. Embrace the unique sound that is your own. That is what makes great records.

    But if the signal is clipping it will be clipping into whatever plugin you use and depending on your plugin it can cause bad characteristics down the line so I like to put my clipped signal directly into a compressor at its default setting as the first step which stops the signal from clipping into whatever other plugins you put it in, then I usually use a gain plugin directly after to bring the dB down 2 or 3db and then I go on to process it. Everyone has their own way though and that really works for me. I get my drums loud
