It wouldn’t start because the coils were melted in the block, could of repaired all that and the engine would of ran just fine, it’s a Honda after all.
Mine has a lil bit melted in cylinder 2 and the engine won’t start at all think that would help? 😂
Same here but my coil is stuck in there
ehh it probably had warped head
Pre-2011 R18 engines are pretty fragile and, have been known to crack in seems close to coolant ports.
@@MrEntTv idk i abuse the fuck out of mine and fine
For those that don't know the Honda R18 is very similar to the Honda d series engines except it doesn't have performance VTEC on the camshaft the Honda R18 engine or the Honda R Series engines performance VTEC is in the intake manifold past 5,000 RPM a flap in the intake manifold will open up so that it uses a shorter intake runner
I worked at a Honda dealership for 14 years, and ran the parts dept for 12 of those years. There was a defect in the block casting of early ('06 and I believe some '07) Civic R18s that caused the block to crack on the back side, towards the firewall. This caused a coolant leak, and engine overheating. If you look on the side of the block, you may be able to see the crack. We replaced TONS of these blocks under warranty. Other than those blocks, it is a very reliable engine. It doesn't have the potential for mods like the B or K series engines, but it's perfectly adequate for a daily driver.
Yeah, that's the only common problem I've seen that wasn't from neglect.
you can still make decent hp from these engines and have a fun daily driver
@@massathebarber1573yea but for that same money just buy an Si lmao never ever makes sense to build an R18 at least not in North America
What about a 2013 r18a ? Mine is leaking water on compression, i hope its gasket problem
Do you know if the cracked block issue affected Japanese manufactured Hondas?
Usually the head has slight warp but ive also had the cylinder liners slightly sink/drop/shrink below the deck surface making decking the block necessary
I have this motor in my car. 400k and going strong. Nice to see the tear down!
Any tips on keeping it going?
@@PiLLO360 just recommended maintenance. I use mobile 1, change when maintenance minder says. Use Honda ATF fluid and change every 25k miles. I’ve only replaced alternator and AC compressor.
Never had to do a valve readjustments on this engine? Also, what model year civic do you have?
@@jasoncurry2515I never have. Ive always said I’ll do it when the valve cover gasket needs replacing and do it all at once, but I’ve never had to replace the valve cover gasket. Have over 460k on it now. It’s a 2013 EXL
@@patm95at what mileage do you change the engine oil?
my coil pack broke exactly like that. how can i get it out
The coolant passages were known to break. Honda has technical bulletins related to the r18. Its a known issue on the earlier models
So how did you separate the engine from transmission if the engine is seized and can't turn flywheel to unbolt from converter?need transmission too right?
19426-RNA-A01 is the stamped steel gasket between the heater outlet and the head?, block?
When it leaks it give the indication of a blown head gasket resulting in a broken/ split radiator. My gasket imprinted itself in the poor outlet casting. I filled the impression and pits with JB Weld and sanded it on glass. Worked fine after that…..but first a new radiator or 3 and every other coolant part replaced…. It was the last part of the coolant system I checked.
jb weld lmao
@@shinski8114probably don’t think you can put a 6 speed MT in it either.
Great video! I spent many years in the trade, but have never tried this while wearing shades. 😁
My eyes are pretty light sensitive so I have to wear safety sunglasses most of the time even indoors at work.
What’s the size on the bolts you use for the stand
This engine might be okay to run, new rebuild but these suffer with head gasket failures a lot
Hey just wanted to know what bolts you used for the engine stand can’t find long enough bolts
DO YOU NEED TO ASSEMBLE THE MOTOR WITH THE PARTITION PLATE YOU HAVE IN THE BLOCK? I PUT MY OWN TOGETHER WITHOUT THE PLATE AND IT'S BEEN RAISING MY TEMPERATURE
/yes thats what keep the coolant flow evenly
Hi....Can I know the cylinder pressure of Honda R20A?
How many miles did it have on it?
enjoyed that Im old but new to dismantling engines. Wish you would get into the habit of treating all parts as if they were going back onto the car good habit to get into even when you know something is toasted. Otherwise very enjoyable
Скільки цей мотор проїхав ?
11:16 blop 🤣
Why did the owner overheat it? You can see signs of overheating early on and still be able to prevent this. Did the owner do this on purpose?
Some people are just oblivious.
theres also no temp gauge in these hondas ik 9th gen with similar motor no temp gauge
@shinski8114 I have a 21 hrv with this engine. I'm not the biggest fan of not having a temp gauge. However, I'm assuming it has an over heat warning?
It won't maybe because crank sensor???😊
I absolutely love the Honda R18 civics over the K20 SIs and to see that camshaft get pulled out of that engine almost made me nut😅😅😅
The middle two cylinders are not two and three The middle two cylinders are 3 and 4 the second cylinder is on the far right hand side of the engine where the fuel line enters the fuel rail
You’re thinking firing order, I think.
He's thinking firing order@nathanschneider6884
These run forever if you dont turbo it 😂
Exactly why I’m watching Lmao
Stop saying this stuff. Bro i been watchin u for a minute and i wanna turbo so bad. Forged internals and maximum cooling power should hold well no?
@o3ilil if you have that kind of money to throw around youre better off to engine swap it, or better yet, buy another car. I love my r18 civic but theyre gutless wonders, youll spend thousands and destroy reliability to make 200hp
Yes and no, and little boost is ok, it's when u run 20psi daily that theres issues, 8-10 would be ok.
@o3ilil yes fine, but k swap 1st. Though a lot of parts do interchange.
I once bought one of these a few years ago it was a 2007 Honda Civic and it was not overheating at first cuz I bought it in spring but during the summer it kept on creeping up there was a crack in the block and I replaced the engine after I replaced the engine a disassembled the old engine and found that there was remnants of an old dipstick in the oil pan these motherfuckers that sold me this car knew it had overheated did not tell me and also replaced the dipstick so that I wouldn't be able to tell
Thanks for the video man. I love this motor
Thanks for this interesting video
thanks for your content, it's great
11:17 that's what she said
Great video. Subscribed
I have that car lol they run for ever 🏃♀️
The most likely reason it wouldn't start is that excessive heat warped the cylinder head, possibly also the block. Skimming the head would probably have gotten that engine running again. The soot on the pistons is normal, pistons tend not to melt, the gasket usually goes followed by the head warping. This guy seemed to be enthusiastic but the things he said would discourage me from having him fix my car 🤣.
i think it didnt start due to the melting coils
Honda piston rings killing your engine 😊
One of Honda's best engines lol. I've owned all kinds of Hondas and this thing is a hot pile of garbage.
About a year after buying my Civic I get a letter from Honda saying that my R18 engine block can crack it anytime!
Plus it's a gutless turd.
It's a Civic, it's meant to be economical not fast. Even like that 145hp from a 1.8 NA engine In 2006 is impressive. Also, the thing gets 40+ mpg if you know how to drive it.
@@514aam I can Average 42-44 MPG via Torque app, and calculating at the pump.
The HP#s don't tell the whole story. It's the power curve, and this engine is peaky & low torque compared to other 4 cylinder engines. Even worse on a hot day. You need a big gap compared to modern cars to merge into traffic, They get impatient and start honking at you because you haven't pulled out because your car is slow as hell
@@theejoeylee haven't had that problem on the R18 to be honest, the thing gets up to speed nicely, it's not a fast car at all, but enough for daily driving
very fun car to drive @@514aam
R18 is the worst engine in honda line up.. below average performance, worst fuel economy.
Why in the world they make plastic dip stick!!! is R series outsourced by honda?
And yet in my experience it's one of the most reliable. I'll take it.
My 2007 civic 5 speed coupe is rated at 40 mpg.
@@MechanicalMalarkey Have seen these go 350,000+ on mileage. The biggest issue with the Civics of this era (8th gen) is the longevity of the AC compressors and door lock actuators. Occasionally the wiring harness under the passenger seat causes intermittent airbag lights on the dash, and of course the putrid design of the cruise control switch which no longer clicks in place and requires replacement of the steering wheel switches if the owner is not interested in jamming a coin into the switch to hold it on.
