    a theme you'll notice with Ghibli films, and especially this one, there is no villain, just different people with different opinions and experiences, the villain is conflict and war.

      Myazaki while being inspired by Walt Disney in his youth, always disliked that there was a Need to have a Villain, and found it kinda insulting to the audience intelligence, even if the audience were young kids.
      So he always tries to make it a Non-Machinean story,a nd as you put it, the Only Villain is War, Conflict and the lack of Empathy.

      Yes I always loved that about his movies. Very often the character who appears to be the clear evil one early on ends up being a welcomed aside to the final cast. One great example is the Witch in Howl. Of course, let's not forget the occasional genuine asswipe like that Laputan dude - the one Mark Hamill played, iirc.

    The part where the Forest Spirit kisses Okkoto and takes his life away... I haven't watched this film since my grandma died in August, and it hit me a lot harder after that experience. She declined very quickly from near-perfect health, and passed within a few days. She was almost 92 years old. My mom and I were there, giving her medicine and taking care of her, but she was mostly incoherent, and suffering. When she passed, it felt gentle. Like a kiss. Like a breath after being submerged in the water. I hope it felt like that for her. I hope she wasn't scared. And I hope whatever awaits after this life is being kind to her.
    I'm over here bawling because of a baboon-faced deer and an angry pig. I guess somedays it be like that.

    They're a small village in a very difficult time, time of WAR, the Sengoku period of Japan.
    People concerned about the nurture because we have modern technology now, so we don't need to worry about the beasts and forest would consume us, but back in the old day people literally need to fight their way out of the wilderness.
    There would be no humanity if people didn't try to do those things.

      yea I'd say there is no good or evil in this movie really, everybody is just doing what they think is right and trying to survive. Lady Eboshi is doing what she can for her people even though it's having cataclysmic effects on the surounding nature, and the animals are doing what they feel they have to to protect their homes from being destroyed by the humans. The message of the movie to me by the end is that we can find a compromise between human development and survival and nature, that humanity and nature are not mutually exclusive.

    What I don’t like about the English translation of this film is that they made so many lines weirdly and to me unnecessarily specific and explanatory which erased so many rooms to interpret.
    One of the examples I cannot stand is where Moro tells Ashitaka about San’s past. In English she was literally thrown away by her parents when Moro literally caught them destroying her forest. But in the original version, we don’t know who did it - to me it even sounds like she was offered as a courtesy to the god from the community she was born in, as part of their plan. By mentioning ‘parents’, we cannot see anything other than ‘horrible individuals’ while it should supposed to be the whole social structure which abandoned her.
    At the same scene, Moro says ‘how dare you speak to a god like that’ and I hate this translation. In the original, she says ‘how do you think you can heal the sadness my daughter has been carrying’. She is angry because she loves her daughter and this is a test for Ashitaka if he is worthy. She wouldn’t get pissed off as a mighty god just because a boy was rude.

      @@thechikuwa284 though I think the philosophy this story is based on is even older than the structured Shintoism (more primitive form of animism, I would say) I do agree that they shouldn’t separate god and demon. • @ayumis5452
      @ayumis5452 2 года назад +22

      @@maxmichalik4938 that was a bit of a change I agree… if I explain a bit, ‘girlfriend’ might not be equivalent to how she was for him. In such small tribal community, it’s the village who arranges who would marry to whom. We can assume that they might be designated at birth to get married. Being a fiancée in that era is definitely not the same as being a girlfriend in a modern way, let alone in a western way. IMO, they didn’t need to mention if she’s sister or not. In Japanese she calls him ‘ani-sama’ which means brother, but again, in such small tribal communities, that’s just how you address an older member of your generation with respect. There are many Japanese people also who misunderstand that she’s his sister. But IMO that does not affect the story. The only thing we need to notice is that she seems to be quite fond of him. And I believe everybody can see that.

    • @ayumis5452
      @ayumis5452 2 года назад +15

      @@maxmichalik4938 For me, the bigger problem is the change of her line. In English she seems to be obsessed not to be forgotten. She even tells that the dagger is for him not to forget her. In Japanese, she does not ask anything. She just says she has put her prayers into this dagger so it would protect him.
      this is such a selfless action. she just wants him to live. that’s why Ashitaka wanted San to keep the dagger instead of him, knowing that the Forest Spirit doesn’t cure his curse which means he can be dead anytime soon. He did not ask San anything in return. Just like Kaya prayed for him, he just wanted San to live instead of himself. In English version, this whole intentions are erased. I’m not happy about that.

    The whole point of this particular story is that neither side is really right or wrong. San wants to protect the forest from the people that are hurting it and killing the wildlife, but Eboshi is providing honest work for people and giving them more freedom then they'd be bound to find elsewhere. Lepers were often treated very poorly everywhere in those times, some places even required them to announce themselves as 'unclean' when they entered a village and in that era it wasn't uncommon for people with debt to be forced to give up their daughters to brothels to pay it off. Eboshi is causing serious damage to the forest, but she isn't a bad person. She just doesn't believe in all the mysticism, and is determined to look out for her people. San doesn't really care about the humans' grievances and sees them as invaders and defilers while ignoring the pain of those she hurts. The bigger problem is that neither side is willing to talk to the other, so they just end up fighting.

    • @kaizerhall3138
      @kaizerhall3138 Год назад +1

      I agree. I find it disappointing how San said she would never forgive the villagers. This shows that, unlike Lady Eboshi, she didn’t learn anything from all this. To her, the villagers were the only ones at fault while she and the spirits were in the right. For all we know, the spirits chose to attack the village without so much as warning them about what they were doing to the forest.
      In my opinion, the spirits are like that angry farmer from Grave of the Fireflies. They dwelled on a piece of land and, like anyone else, had the right to protect it. But when said land was being disturbed, they tried to handle it through violence. They attacked someone who was trying to survive, showing no sympathy or understanding for that person’s situation.
      Lady Eboshi may have caused a lot of trouble, but she saw the error of her ways and learned from them. Something that San was too stubborn to do.
      What do you think?

    • @judaihyuga
      @judaihyuga Год назад +13

      @@kaizerhall3138 I get *why* San can't forgive the villagers, but I do think the movies ending is mostly positive. San understands that if they can't get along, at least they can live and let live and Eboshi understands the consequences of her actions and isn't stupid or stubborn enough to repeat the same mistakes. Hirotaka at least got through to San that humans aren't inherently bad, even if she's still wary of them. I just appreciate that neither side is necessarily the bad guy in this situation and both do ultimately start to understand each other even if only a little. It's a first step in the right direction, but shows they still have work to do before they're ready to work together. It's a realistic conclusion that doesn't just have them ignoring the bad blood that's built over time just to wrap everything in a neat little bow. Peace is something you have to work hard for, and they don't act like it's not. It's a movie that opens the door for healthy conversations about a complex topic that merits discussion, which I'm 100% on board with.

    • @kaizerhall3138
      @kaizerhall3138 Год назад +2

      @Rawden I understand. When San said that she couldn’t forgive the villagers, I assumed that it was going to be a permanent thing. That she would forever hate humans without trying to understand them, their situation, or how she might’ve made things worse. But if what you say is true. If there’s still hope for the two sides to one day reconcile, with San learning to forgive and accept humanity, then that would be alright.

      It is difficult to apply the concept of good and evil to Japanese gods. Because the Japanese religion of Shinto has no scriptures, the taboos that the gods set vary from one god to another. The difference is whether they are hostile to humans or not.
      The God of Nago transformed his power into resentment through a desire for revenge, becoming the “GOD” of “Curse”.
      He is not the “god” of “evil.”
      In the play, Ashitaka is also transforming into a "Tatarigami."
      A Tatarigami (God of Curses) is a wild god that is transformed when an ancient god of the mountains and fields explodes with negative emotions such as anger, sadness, and hatred, absorbing the evil spirits that fill the fields and mountains.
      In ancient indigenous Japanese beliefs, monsters and gods are of equal existence.
      Sometimes humans who have become vengeful spirits are also worshiped as gods.
      As you may know, in Japanese mythology there are said to be eight million gods (an expression meaning "too many to count").

    People for some reason forget that nature is most cruel concept in existence and all life in nature boils down to breed kill and expand humans have just perfected this.
    People who praise nature for its beauty have never seen its cruelty in person there is a reason we as a species have basically spent our entire time harnessing and controlling nature to whatever degree we could.

    Yeah, I feel like people forget some things and get this idea of "living in harmony". Sure there is "living in harmony", but not like that, at least not in this like. Everything that lives needs the death of other things to live. Look at trees. They live, die, and decay, and that provides nutrients for the next trees. The wolfs even had animal pelts in this movie. Animals push other animals out too. It's hard to say where the right and wrong is. While I do think this movie definingly leans more toward one side, I'm glad it's not just saying humans bad, animals good, like I feel like other stories like this do.

    We living in this high-tech world, overusing the resources, and saying the village people of this film are the "villains" 😂😂😂
    Do we hunt? Yes. Do we cut the trees? Yes. Do we use the land? Yes. We are not just building villages but BIG CITIES. This film teaches us to respect and live in harmony with the nature. It's not about good vs evil.

      It's just how nature is. Humans are the dominant species on the planet and if there's one thing nature shows is the strongest species takes over. That's just how it is. Even in the animal kingdom, the strong devour the weak.
      In this movie, it's obvious that humans couldn't hope to survive in the wilderness so they had to innovate by making guns and explosives in order to survive and thrive.
      People say the humans in this movie and coexist with the inhabitants of the forest but that's an naive dream. There will always be a fight for territory.

    Then people call these animals gods because of translation.
    The original word is "kami" which doesn't really mean God or deity - more like a powerful spirit.
    There's no accurate translation for Kami, so they choose god.
    But Kami have much more in common with nature spirits from folklore than with pagan gods for example.
