This is one of my favorite Miyazaki films. Maybe it's because it was the second film I ever watched from Studio Ghibli, but I absolutely love the story, characters, and music in this film
There are a few details you notice better at a second viewing. One, you get to see what happened before in the intro. And if you look at the landscape, you can see the craters from the war before. It's possible that the canyon where Pazu lived was probably also a result of the war. Together with Laputa being just a legend, the war must have been truly devastating. It doesn't look like the world will ever recover from it with the resources looking as exhausted as it does. Not to mention the drop in technology. And Laputa was the most powerful weapon in that war. Just throwing the crystal away would not have been enough. If you have the time, watch it again in Japanese with English subtitles. It's a whole new experience. The Japanese voices, esp. Pazu's suits the characters better.
I've seen it both ways, and I honestly don't think the voices are better or worse in either version, only different. But they both give good performances.
I've mentioned this in another comment, but I've got an alternative English dub on video. I was SO confused when I heard this English version for the first time!
Pazu's voice is low, totally different from the Japanese version and the image. The Japanese version is performed by the voice actor who played Krillin of Dragon Ball and Luffy of One Piece.
one thing i just noticed was that, the robot was not inherently hostile to the soldiers until After it was struck with the Shell, only blowing things up to make a path way to Sheeta.
Something about the robot moving the glider to let the birds get back to the nest, and then the birds landing on the robot just makes me emotional. It shows how beautiful Studio ghibli movies are. Ehm i would just say you got the hint at this moving,bc it's the same animation studio. The point with Musca is, that his familyline was not the mainline and they where against to leave Laputa, but Sheetas family was mainline and on the earth they got separated. That's what he's explained to her. And actually i can totally understand why they destroyed Laputa. Musca wanted to rule the world. He was a tyrant and he's a grown man. Sheetas only around 12-13 if i remember right so he's much stronger than her. And think about it. What would could've happened, if Pazu was killed or left Sheeta behind? such an amazing film, I loved this movie as a kid, and if you didn't know, the iron golem holding out a flower in minecraft is a reference to the robots in this film. :)
This was the first anime I ever saw, when I was six, in like 1991. It's still some of the most magnificent storytelling I've ever witnessed. Also, fun fact, the mining village where she landed and Pazu lived? IN WALES.
After Nausicaa (and Castle of Cagliostro, if you haven’t done it yet), you’ll have most of the classic Ghibli canon covered- After that, how about some of the vintage classic old-school NON-Ghibli anime films: Project A-ko, Galaxy Express 999, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose, or Dirty Pair: Project Eden?
The conversation of the two at 1:15:30 suggests that some scenes are missing in this version. In the official version, the soldier reports to the General that Muska (or his henchmen) wrecked all the communication equipments of the ship and severely harmed (or killed) radio operators along the way. Please make sure the length of the film is 2 hours and 4 min.
@@zdiegi5493 Assuming the scenes in question aren't missing, the film has undergone many changes anyway. I don't understand why they reacted to the horribly altered edition?
@@kazuhisanakatani1209 There are no cuts or changes to any of the video. Aside from dialogue differences due to it being another English adaptation, the only changes are to the soundtrack. Music was added or replaced.

after binging you both watching through GoT in the last few weeks, and rediscovering the ghibli reactions I'm secretly hoping for another marathon this year. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, The Secret World of Arrietty, Porco Rosso, The Cat Returns, Tales From Earth Sea, and From Up On Poppy Hill are all top tier and don't get nearly enough attention. Would be great to capitalize on the studio while everyone is hyped for "The Boy and the Heron"!
Sheeta and Pazu are supposed to be in their early teens I think. And yet, for some reason, the people who dubbed this film used adult voices, which sound bizarre... If you watch it in the original version, you'll see what I mean.
A similar design robot appears in the 1980 Lupine III TV series. And the prototype of this robot is said to be the "robbery robot" that appears in the 1943 Superman movie.
It is bad, but remember after the script is re-written for each translated language , the voice actors have to sync with the already animated mouth movements.
@@kitespongan In Japanese animation, most of the anime is created first and the voice actors are recording along with it. So what we're doing is the same as the American version.
Too bad someone hasn't uploaded the fan-dubbed version of this movie, done by a college anime fan club, I think, from back in the late '80's or early '90's, I can't remember now exactly what year that was done. That English version was really good! It captured a lot of the spirit of the original Japanese VA's. When I learned about the screening at a college in a town not too far from ours, our whole family went to see it. It was such a thrill, seeing Laputa on a big screen, in English for the first time, as we had only had a typed transcript given to us by our comics dealer before then, to read along while watching the Japanese language-only VHS tape I'd paid a small fortune to get from Japan. The awesome experience was cut short though, when problems with the building's projector cut the movie off mid-way, and they never could get things fixed so we could continue the movie. Thankfully, the anime club sold VHS copies of their dubbed version of Laputa there, so we picked up a copy, of course. I still have that VHS tape, but I haven't watched it in ages, as our VCR died a long time ago. Young anime fans today have NO appreciation of how good they have it, of just how difficult it was to be able to find, afford, and watch anime in the days before the internet, and before they began bringing anime series over to the USA for release with any regularity.
37:40 No, this is not Ponyo. Maybe the drawing style makes you confuse. Laputa was released in 1986, while Ponyo's year was 2008. 2 kids just voluntarily sacrifice themselves to keep Laputa’s technology from bad hands, and all they care about are the animals 😂
1:15:22 The reason why they're looking for Muska is that he and his suit wearing cronies destroyed the Goliath's communications equipment before going to look for the door that they eventually found and dragged Sheeta through.
@@randj1616 as posted below, the name Laputa was from Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels"; the movie took the idea of a flying island (or castle) from there. Swift named the place well knowing the meaning in spanish, since the satyrical intent of the story.
It's the infamous English version with the addition of the boisterous music; "Americans Can't Stand Silence." Director Miyazaki was apparently furious that the Americans ruined his film.
The updated soundtrack is better and significantly more layered than the original. It's a bit overpresent sometimes, but it overall fits the grand story that this movie presents far better. Ya'll just hate change.
If there's really a place like Laputa or planet like that and the people who were able to reach it was Chinese or Russian forces, I'm sure they would act exactly like this army.
some technologies and weapons are better left in oblivion. especially as the only state / Nation we saw was clearly quite militaristic. and yes, that technology certainly could have done a lot of good, but considering the kind of people who were looking for it, that knowledge would have been used to make weapons, not help people. 1:13:10 "Try Not to Flinch" challenge begin. Your palms start to sweat, your skin begins to tingle and your heart starts racing as death's door is over a thousand feet below Laputa. 😱
such an amazing film, I loved this movie as a kid, and if you didn't know, the iron golem holding out a flower in minecraft is a reference to the robots in this film. :)
うわぁ・・・海外の吹き替えが酷いとは聞いてたけどココまで酷いとは・・・棒読みちゃんレベルやんけ
Yeah, but Italian version is more good of English, Japan is the best anyway.
My wife love this movie so much that we named our daughter Laputa.
That’s such a cute name!!
@@ThatOneChattyGirl
We think so. 🙂
She will never be able to be on a spanish country not even for vacation
I hope you never go to a country that talk spanish 😂
I cant believe you
吹き替え版ではイメージが全然変わってしまいますね。残念。
37:33 they actually did, Whisper of the heart and The Cat returns has some crossover.
That was one of the best films ever!
Pazu opened the door to the pigeon coop before leaving after he was told he has a minute to prep.
This was the first anime I ever saw, when I was six, in like 1991. It's still some of the most magnificent storytelling I've ever witnessed. Also, fun fact, the mining village where she landed and Pazu lived? IN WALES.
After Nausicaa (and Castle of Cagliostro, if you haven’t done it yet), you’ll have most of the classic Ghibli canon covered-
After that, how about some of the vintage classic old-school NON-Ghibli anime films: Project A-ko, Galaxy Express 999, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose, or Dirty Pair: Project Eden?
The conversation of the two at 1:15:30 suggests that some scenes are missing in this version. In the official version, the soldier reports to the General that Muska (or his henchmen) wrecked all the communication equipments of the ship and severely harmed (or killed) radio operators along the way. Please make sure the length of the film is 2 hours and 4 min.
I believe the full video is on Suzy's website
Nah, the scenes weren't missing, they just missed (as one can see in the full reaction on the website)
@@fiveoctaves Besides the changes in the music, cartoonigh sound effects have been added. The alterations are obviously intended to please young children and audiences with short attention spans. Since the producer and/or director of the UK edition seem to have no respect for the original material, I was very skeptical.
"Laputa"? That's one unfortunate title if you know Spanish
Hence them going out of their way to stress "LA-puta", and why it was released as just "Castle in the Sky" in Spanish-speaking countries
in Spanish they decided to change it to "Lapuntu" haha
Laputa appears in Gulliver's Travels
No tanto si leíste "Las aventuras de Gulliver", ya que mientras navega luego de escapar de los Liliputienses, divisa una ciudad flotando en medio del océano: Laputa 😉
@@memotalia I never said it was
Muska's voice is Mark Hamill.
I dont know what version i has as a kid but there was alot more random background dialogue from the pirates
男の子キャラが英語で吹き替えられると子供の声じゃなくなるのは何故なのか
それはそれとして、i enjoyed your reaction! thank you!
after binging you both watching through GoT in the last few weeks, and rediscovering the ghibli reactions I'm secretly hoping for another marathon this year.
I really like your grounded approach to this story ^^
47:15 Please explain why this scene is funny
Castle in the Sky is my favorite movie it makes me cry
Sheeta and Pazu are supposed to be in their early teens I think. And yet, for some reason, the people who dubbed this film used adult voices, which sound bizarre...
If you watch it in the original version, you'll see what I mean.
I'm pretty sure Sheeta's voice actor was around 14 but Pazu's was much older

Next Lupin Ⅲ Castle of Cagliostro.🙇
You should watch this movie by Japanese voiceactors. Quality is totally different.
Laputa v:
Agreed, also the original score is much better than the overly orchestrated American one.
@@math9172 I like both scores equally, and neither is better or worse, only different.
海外では20秒準備時間が長いのか。
Easily the most 'blockbuster' of all the Ghibli movies.
I'm pretty sure the robots in it were an inspiration for the Iron Giant.
A similar design robot appears in the 1980 Lupine III TV series.
And the prototype of this robot is said to be the "robbery robot" that appears in the 1943 Superman movie.
It was you can look it up
The pirate airship is called the Tiger Moth
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one ❤❤❤
This was the first time I saw the dubbed version, and I did not expect it to be so bad.🤐
Once again, I realized how great Japanese voice actors are.
It is bad, but remember after the script is re-written for each translated language , the voice actors have to sync with the already animated mouth movements.
@@kitespongan
In Japanese animation, most of the anime is created first and the voice actors are recording along with it.
54:45 as innocent as it looked, always gives me the creeps that guy. 🗿 Good thing this isn't a horror movie.
Characters: "laputa"
Me: laughs in spanish
What that means? Can you tell me?
@@randj1616
Laputa can be literally translated to "The b*tch"
Every person who speak spanish laughs when they hear that 😂
@@manuelbarrientos6648 OMG Really? That is so funny. Thank you for reply me.
@@randj1616 as posted below, the name Laputa was from Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels"; the movie took the idea of a flying island (or castle) from there. Swift named the place well knowing the meaning in spanish, since the satyrical intent of the story.
LA QUE?
キツネリス見てピカチューは新発想やった😂

Great reaction! This movie is so good!
@@KnotPhound Stop your hate speech against the original.
@@thechikuwa284 I didn't hate speech wtf. I just said this version is slightly better.
If there's really a place like Laputa or planet like that and the people who were able to reach it was Chinese or Russian forces, I'm sure they would act exactly like this army.
16:12 in japanese, he said his father died. not killed.
The next Ghibli film review should be From Up on Poppy Hill. It has nice music and great imagery of food. I recommend it.
"Up From Poppy Hill" is also a good movie to react to.

some technologies and weapons are better left in oblivion. especially as the only state / Nation we saw was clearly quite militaristic. and yes, that technology certainly could have done a lot of good, but considering the kind of people who were looking for it, that knowledge would have been used to make weapons, not help people. Great Video !
Mark H. and Cloris L., Jim Cummings and great story.

Why would they change the ost?
iirc disney asked joe hisaishi to make a more grand orchestral score and so he did and he kind of ended up adopting that orchestral style more from then on i think there's also like a later japanese release with this score too so it's not exclusively for the english but i could be wrong
@@Envy_May oh okay. I've never heard it before. I usually watch it SUB or German
The reason the army went after Muska is because he destroyed all the radios on Goliath and injured a few soldiers
