  • In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious Porco Rosso (Shuichiro Moriyama), a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew's American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo (Akemi Okamura) and his longtime friend Madame Gina (Tokiko Kato).

I love porco rosso and firmly believe at no point ever was marco literally a pig man, its entirely a visual metaphor for the audience and a reflection of how marco sees himself. After his disillusionment in the war and failings in his own life he lived as a pig of a man even crossing out his own face in ginas picture of him. But with fio's help and his love for gina, he was finally able to overcome his self-hatred and become a good man again.

I heard this movie was really appreciated in Italy as a one they watch once a year to remember why you have to resist facist. "Better a pig than a facist."

  • @RaixsOreh

Basically, Porco has Survivor's guilt, and probably PTSD. he turned into a pig because he doesn't think he deserves to live, and that he's selfish for not dying in the war, when we clearly see how selfless he is, trying to take his friend's place in the hallucination of heaven he saw during the battle.

I am going to click away, not because I am not interested, because I haven't seen this movie yet, I am gonna go see it and then return

  • @Jay-ln1co

When Fio flies the little jet at the end over Gina's island, you can see Porco's plane parked on the small dock at the back.

In the original japanese instead of ' cute girl, when did you start babysitting?' the line is: 'there's pearls before a swine'. Also when Gina talks to Porco on the phone when she thought he had died she doesn't say: 'I don't want to go to another pilots funeral' - she says: 'One of these days you're going to be roast pork! I don't want that!'. In the dub they missed a couple of crucial comic lines which added to the film...bilingual here.

Porco Rosso really is one of those movies where you completely lose yourself in the story. You're having so much fun with the characters and the gags and the comedy that by the time the sea-place race and knock-out drag out fight happens, you lose any sense of time. I've watched this movie so many times and I almost always get blindsided by how quickly the 3rd act finale arrives because I'm just having the most fun watching Porco and the rest of the characters.

  • @curtisbrack3398

Just FYI, most of the planes in the movie are based on actual seaplanes from the 1930s made by Italy, Germany, USA etc.

Japanese bilingual here. It's definitely pronounced ji-blee. In the logo it's embedded in the japanese phonetic characters. Miyazaki acknowledged that the word was not pronounced like in the original language (which i think was arabic) in an interview, but that the studio name is set now. No one in Japan will know what you're talking about if you say it with a hard g.

The inspiration for the Lo-Fi girl actually came from another Ghibli movie you haven’t covered yet (mentioned in replies if you don’t want spoiled)

  • @TimedRevolver

This may not have been the fist Ghibli film I saw, but it's easily my favorite by a wide margin.

  • @brianimator

Yeah, Susan Egan played Belle on Broadway, but didn't voice her in the film -- that was Paige O'Hara. However, she did voice Megara in Hercules.

Woo! If you're a Ghibli fan, this isn't one you're likely to overlook or underrate, but for people who haven't seen much of Ghibli or anime, in general, this is a true gem.

  • @newdayatmidnight

This is a top 3 Ghibli film for me. Glad y'all enjoyed it so much!

Actually I’ve been waited that you guys react to the Porco Rosso!!

  • @pollyparrot9447

A scene from Porco Rosso was obviously taken from the short story ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ by Roald Dahl, who was a WWII fighter pilot. It's a beautiful story and well worth a read.

  • @chetanrawool

Glad that you picked up this movie, for some reason lot react people avoid this movie. I think it's brilliant movie " better pig than a fascist “ one of my favorite quote. Love the reaction as always.
