Easily one of my favorite movies growing up. Even without context, you can tell how much Miyazaki love planes and Italy
if I have a nickel for every japanese renown illustrator love italy, i'd have 2 nickles. it ain't much, but it's weird it happened twice.
I mean, he even named his animation company after a plane named after one of the Italian words for Libyan desert wind. Ghibli, like Ariete, is one of those names Italians love to put on many things.
The way I see it "Porco Rosso" is a great take on mental health. The "curse" on Marco is a metaphor of guilt, depression, self loathing, PTSD and other mental disorders that affect people.
People see him as a pig because Marco himself considers himself a pig: he hates himself because he was the only one of his friends to survive war. He considers himself a pig because is in love with Gina and feels guilty about it since she was married to his best friend and he died during war.
That's why Fio sees him as a human: because he was thinking that no one was looking at him and unconsciously took human form, when he realizes that Fio is awake he turns into a pig again.
In the end he turns into a human because he finally forgave himself.
I think this is basically spot on.
To add on to that final line of yours, I think that's why at the end Fio specifically says "Porco never showed up again." yet she follows it up with "Whether Gina ever won her bet or not is our secret."
If he really did die or run away at the end, we would already know what happened to Gina's bet, there'd be no secret left to keep.
Porco never showed up again, Marco did.
Gina won.

Porco Rosso is 100% my favorite Ghibli film and watching Ame enjoy it is a treat.

Porco Rosso is so underrated and certainly my favorite as well. It's so romantic and crude and cozy. Absolute perfection, like all of Hayao Miazaki's films.
I prefer Nausicaä, but Porco Rosso is a close second.

0:55 this starting process is actually suprisingly realistic. He’s cranking a big metal spinning flywheel with a reduction gear with that handle, and when it’s at a certain speed he “meshes” it (like letting out the clutch on a car) to get it to turn over and start running.
This is similar to the electric starter motor in your car, but electric motors were too heavy and required too much electricity at the time to be practical in airplanes. Before this system you had to have someone do the same thing by turning the propeller by hand.
Wouldn't say it's surprising. Miyazaki is a big airplane geek lol

Yeah, planes were a big part of Miyazaki's life. His father used to run a Mitsubishi Zero component factory during WWII and when he started drawing, he couldn't draw humans, so he would draw pigs in tanks and planes, with a lot of realistic details. You can see his affinity for them still showing itself in the vehicles and weapons of various Ghibli movies. This was probably his last work that really featured the hallmarks of pre-Ghibli Miyazaki, pigs in detailed machines.

"A pig's gotta fly." It's a bad translation. The better is "If I do not fly, I must be only a pig"
or so.
A pig who can't fly, is merely a pig
i would translated as "a pig that do not fly is just a pig" but im still learning so might be wrong
Its more like, "A pig that cannot fly is just an ordinary pig" and in this context, I interprete the sentence to be something like, "if a pilot cannot fly, then he wouls just be a normal person"
Even if it's a mistranslation, I think it sounds good in the moment.

子供の時は？？？って感じで見た記憶があって、成人してからもう一度見返した時にジブリの中で1番好きになった不思議な作品

Remember kids: Better a pig than a fascist. What is great is that this movie is 100 percent an indictment of the rise of fascism in Italy and how in a world with fascists, being seen as a pig will always be better.

The English dub for this movie is great
ぽるこが豚に見えているのは、彼自身が自分のことを取るに足らない豚のような奴だとさげすんでいるから、それが態度にもでて周りに豚に見えてしまっている。
実際はちゃんと触れば人間の顔なんだけど。
フィオにも最初は豚に見えてたが、一瞬だけ人の顔に見えてたのはフィオにとってのぽるこが豚ではなく一人のかっこいい男に見え始めていたから、つまりあの時点でフィオがぽるこに惚れ始めている表れだと思う。
ぽるこの呪いを解く1番の方法は、ぽるこのことを1人の男として本気で愛してくれる存在ができることだと思う。ぽるこの自分に対して卑下する気持ちがなくならない限り呪いは解けないだろう
