A great aspect of this movie is I feel it opens up more of the Monsterverse to explore. I'm glad we're getting new creative monsters, it feels like we could get loads more Monsterverse movies and I'd be here for it

There's an entire hollow earth for these creatures to explore for many movies to come. These movies aren't limited by what the surface of earth and common sense allow - there's much, much more volume to a hollow earth than people realize. I think they ran a good balance between the budget and a movie that's fully CGI the whole time. It wasn't perfect but it was the best balance you can ride without a Disney budget.

My theater was full of kids excited to see the movie. Some even had Godzilla and/or Kong toys with them. It's safe to say that this is a movie made to inspire the imaginations of children while delivering the modern showa era showdown that us older fans used to dream about. I truly felt like a kid again while watching this film and while it has plenty of issues, I can set those aside for the pure excitement this movie brings.

    ----SPOILERS BELOW-----
I loved Godzilla x Kong. I've been a fan of Godzilla ever since I watched Godzilla 2014 and I've been at the cinema on opening day for every Monsterverse movie since. The Kaiju action in this movie is some of the best I've ever seen, although the whole Monsterverse is packed with awesome action. I've just come back from watching it for a second time and I just have some thoughts that I wanted to write down, so where better than in the comments of the best Godzilla RUclipsr on the site.
The effects on the monsters are getting close to flawless. Kong and Godzilla look absolutely incredible. Considering that this movie had about two thirds the budget of GvK, I think it actually looks even better. Godzilla's new pink design looks brilliant. Kong looks pretty much the same as in GvK, although with more battle scars and what looks like an even longer beard (a detail that I absolutely love). Speaking of scars, the Scar King also has a really awesome design. The red fur and longer, orangutang like limbs make him distinctly different from the rest of the kongs. And with the other kongs, I like how you can clearly see the difference between them and out Kong. They've been living underground for so long, probably less food to go around while also being forced to work by an evil tyrant. Our Kong on the other hand has been roaming the hollow Earth for years now, hunting and eating at his leisure while also doing it all by himself, which is why he's so much stronger than the other Kongs, say for Scar King.
While we're talking about the monsters, another thing about them that I loved was their characterisation. As much as I love King of the Monsters, one thing I think they did wrong was make Godzilla too much of a hero. He doesn't really do anything morally questionable in KotM. This is not the case for the rest of the monsterverse, even in Godzilla 2014. His goals just so happen to align with ours (killing the Mutos), but he doesn't really care about humanity. He kills countless people in the process, not intentionally but he also just doesn't really care, in the same way the a person doesn't really care in an ant gets in their way. They then got this right again in GvK. Godzilla is way more villainous and it's always cool to see. Once humanity stars making MechaG, Godzilla shows up right away to shut that shit down, sending a message in the process. He also doesn't show any mercy to Kong once they come to blows. It's only when they team up to kill MechaG does Godzilla let Kong go, and only after he dropped the axe, symbolising that Kong concedes the fight and will stay in hollow Earth. Now in GxK, they keep this going. Godzilla really doesn't care about what the humans are doing, now that they're not trying to make a weapon to kill him, so he's just out to kill the Kaiju that enter his terf. Once Kong comes back to the surface, Gozilla knows something is up. Plus, he's also building up his own power, getting ready for a big fight. I also appreciate how he immediately tries to kill Kong when they meet towards the end. He might have given him a nod of respect at the end of GvK, but now as far as Godzilla is concerned, Kong is back in his territory, with a giant robo glove to boot. The only reason Godzilla doesn't kill Kong is because Mothra steps in. So monsterverse Godzilla is not really a protector of humanity, but is more of an apathetic saviour.
When it comes to Kong, this is probably the best insight into his character. Despite what is might seem like, Kong was definately the MC of GvK and now GxK. He's able to get across so much emotions despite being a huge CGI model. Kong also gets to be an absolute badass in this movie. We get to really see how intelligent he is now. He's literally setting traps for his enemies. Not ony that, when he meets Godzilla again towards the end, he holds up his hands as a sign of surrender so that Godzilla will listen to him, something which seems like an extremely human thing to do. Also, fucking Mothra is back. I didn't watch many of the later trailers for the movie, so I don't know if this was hinted at, but I was so happy to see Mothra back. She looked so good in KotM and was absent from GvK (yeno, 'cos she died), but now Mothra's back baby. I also loved how she was implemented in the story, being the one who tempers and guides Godzilla's rage and power for good rather than just for his own desires.
We also get two new Kaiju to add to the roster in the Scar King and Shimo. As I said before, I love the Scar King's design, but I also like his personality. We can clearly tell that he's a sadistic, ruthless tyrant who enjoys hurting others. He literally carries a whip made of bones with the device he uses to control Shimo attachted to the end. I also love how he fights. He's clearly faster and more agile than Kong, while wielding a somewhat more complicated weapon. Although once Kong did get his hands on him, he seemed to have the upper hand. So it seems like a fairly balanced fight. Then there's Shimo, who has a really cool (hehe cool) design and is a fairly sympathetic kaiju. The only thing I kind of wished to see was a way to show off the scale of Shimo, as I don't think we ever get a real sence of her true size, but I'm sure she'll make a return. That's another great thing, is the monsterverse is building its own new pantheon of Kaiju, and not just reusing old ones. We got things like the Mutos and the Skull Crawlers, and now Shimo and Scar King (Who I really would have prefered if he survived so he could make a comeback in a future movie but ah well).
I suppose this would also be a good time to talk about the human characters, because this time there's actually something to talk about. Firstly, I was surprised that Millie Bobby Brown did not return as Madison Russell, as she was one of the few characters that had been in multiple films (that was still alive) and she's a pretty big name at the moment, but I'm almost glad that she didn't. Don't get me wrong, I quite liked her, and she really did grow on me as the movies went on, but there was just no need for there to be two groups of human characters this time around. It was cool to have team Godzilla and team Kong during GvK (Although another solo Kong movie before that where we could have met team Kong would have gone a really long way in my opinion but I'll save that discussion for another day), but in GxK they narrowed it down mostly to the relationship between Dr. Andrews and Jia. The connection between Jia and Kong is also good, but I think it's actually a step down from GvK. The mother daughter relationship is actually very sweet, heartwarming and not at all what I was expecting going into it. I especially love Andrew's line about how she swore to do right by her when she took Jia in, and at the end she was fully ready to let her be with her people if that's what she chose to do. Rebecca Hall give an amazing performance, especially in that last scene where fully understand how hard it is for her to let Jia go. Another interesting detail I picked up, while she's signing, you can just about hear what Andrews is saying, but the more emotional she gets, the louder she says it, which is most obvious is that aformentioned scene. The acting was top notch across the board, although I must admit, a lot of the jokes didn't really land as well they probably hoped they would, especially from Bernie and Trapper. While I liked the characters, they mostly weren't that funny, to me at least (except that line from Bernie about getting help from his discord server, that was gold).
These were my very long winded thoughts on Godzilla x Kong. I hope at least one thing I've said so far has maybe been slightly interesting. Overall, I'd give the movie an 8.5 / 10. And where does it fall on the monsterverse worst to best?
    6.9 / 10 Kong: Skull Island
    7.5 / 10 Godzilla 2014
    8.3 / 10 Godzilla vs. Kong
    8.5 / 10 Godzilla X Kong
9.6 / 10 Godzilla: King of the Monsters

What struck me aside from the blisteringly fun spectacle was the rather strong narrative throughline of finding home.
I love that Kong and the Monarch crews Hollow Earth journeys were so well intercut - with both discovering revelations and dangers in tandem.
I do love GvK, but GxK is a far better structured film.

OST is a huge improvement from GvK.
People simp for Bear way too much, and honestly who wouldn't, but rights are still a thing and honestly the vibe Adam goes for wouldn't fit with a KOTM styled OST. If they go for something like KOTM again they could bring Bear back.
People just like to hate it cause, "It's not one of Ifukube or Toho's themes."
Biggest reason why Bear and KOTM's score is so hyped is, while not from lack of skill and talent from Bear, is that a lot of it is taken from already existing OG themes. His Ghidorah and Rodan scores along with a few more are original and great, but Goji and Mothra's were already done. He just kind of rearranged it and made it in his own style.
KOTM's score pretty much relies heavily on borrowed music. Tom and Antonio have the monumental task of making OG themes from the ground up to a beloved franchise that has many judgmental fans. Besides, KOTM's style of OST wouldn't work with what Adam is going for anyway.
KOTM is more reverential and awe inducing, which fits the film. It makes sense for the OG themes to be included. It's a love letter to the older movies.
GvK and GxK is a sci-fi zany action packed monster mash and bash fest that's doing its own thing. Totally different takes.
Again, I love KOTM's score. It's peak. But people really need to loosen up and be more open to new and different things.
Just as Godzilla himself has had many iterations and changes throughout his 70 years of existence (with many fans complaining just as much then as they are now every time there's any form of change or new), as well as themes and music during the older Toho films, we should be open to more changes without the rose-tinted glasses on.
Godzilla has always reinvented himself. It's how he has been able to stay as relevant as he did.

This movie was the biggest love letter to Showa era Goji:
Monster "day in the life" screentime like Son of Godzilla
Ancient underground societies like vs. Megalon
Monsters have personality and they bicker like in Ghidorah 3 Headed Monster
Absolutely INSANE fight choreography for the monsters
    Charming human characters.
Hard to say but it might be the best of the series. We'll see with time. But it hit me the same way the old Showa films did, even more so than KOTM and GvK.

Honestly, I don’t care about critic reviews, or fan reactions, what matters is that it delivers on what it’s premise promises, and if it can succeed as a kaiju flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously, or is too silly. Based on what I’ve seen with GXK: the new empire, it does look over the top and fun, but in a good way, and that at least is a good sign for me.

I just saw it and I mostly enjoyed it. I honestly wanted to see the Russell family return.
I think it was much better then Godzilla vs Kong, but not as good as KoTM.
I liked the action and visuals of the movie. I'm glad it's doing well at the box office, hopefully it keeps going.
Let's hope for more Godzilla content.

I had real problems with the scripts for the Monsterverse films and, with the exception of Skull Island, the scripts got progressively worse as the monster action got better and better. That helped a lot, but eventually the story could get so bad, like Transformers Last Knight bad, that it could ruin the monster experience. I was amazed to see that the script works. It works within the confines of a kaiju film. It does not transcend its genre (like Minus One), but revels in what it is. Most fun I've had in theaters in a long time.

My one gripe - in almost back-to-back scenes, Kong and Godzilla each fight a different serpentine monster. That felt repetitive and I would have liked one of the designs to be different. That's about as nitty a pick as I could give you.

See, this movie did what all good monster movies do, like Jaws, Jurassic Park, GMK, the Gamera trilogy, and it gave the humans a strong narrative. I don’t want to say too much but was was said in the brief review, the human characters are entertaining, and that their part was focused around science and thinking instead of simply military warfare really brought in an aspect of the Showa era of Godzilla films.
“Perhaps it’s not very scientific, but we should put our trust in Mothra” rang more than once in my head during the latter half.

This movie was so awesome. My only major gripe is that the human characters eh at best! I hope the Monsterverse learns from minus one and tries to make the humans less of a prop and more of characters. Perhaps they should make the next movie a more smaller story to make the humans finally work. A smaller story would benefit the monsterverse.

I love the difference between Godzilla & Kong in these movies. Godzilla is this highly aggressive god-like being who battles world ending Lovecraftian beasts. King meanwhile is this heroic Marvel action star who goes on adventures within the Hollow Earth.
I also love how Godzilla actively does not want to be in this film. He hates Kong and his storylines, and it always ends with him getting punched in the face. He routinely keeps trying to get out of this, and I laugh so hard

Awesome review! I also agree that Godzilla was overly mean in this movie and that it should have been toned down a little bit (yes, yes, I know the whole preparation bit at the beginning, but a bit more range in emotion could have balanced things out). That said, this was a fun-as-hell movie and I rejoiced at every moment of it. Kong, Suko and Shimo are now among my personal favorite groups of characters in any movie.
Scar King was such a menacing antagonist and it was awesome to see a special someone again--again, no spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. Plus, getting more lore into the Hollow Earth and MonsterVerse in general was great too.
Curiously, Wingard himself said that if GxK was successful, that the next movie would focus on Godzilla and do something similar with his character, so I'm looking forward to what he has to bring. And in an interview with Collider not long ago, he hints that maybe a Godzilla Jr may be entering Legendary's roster...so who knows? But with GxK making $80 m already at the box office (the best since G'2014, believe it or not), that possibility may not be too farfetched.

Kaiju Canuck used a great analogy in his review. When Gordan Ramsey was asked what his last meal would be, he said beef wellington, and an in and out burger. Movies like Minus One were no doubt Beef Wellington. Movies like Godzilla x Kong are the burger. Both are amazing in their own merits and have certain ways that they should be done. This was a great burger.

Glad you liked it, but it's not for me. I get Godzilla can have both serious and silly movies, but I will always prefer serious. I lost all interest in the mosterverse after Godzilla vs Kong. It's just become too goofy and disconnected considering how the series started in 2014. I had issues with that movie, but not tonally. I'm sure many love the new direction the Monsterverse is taking, I'm just not one of them.
