Kemper Kabinet - the BEST way to monitor a Kemper?

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I've had a Kemper since 2014-15 and tried various options for using it live. I don't have the powered toaster, so the most obvious and available choice has been PA speakers - RCF ART312 and Yamaha DXR types. The Kemper Kabinet seems to be the best choice though, especially if it can get closer to the feeling of an Amp in the Room or on Stage. So when one came up used nearby, I decided to grab it and try it out.
    Here's the first time plugging in, and I'm powering the Kab with the power stage of a VHT D50 (Dumble ODS 2x6l6 50w Output tubes). First impressions are good, and I should have a solid state poweramp to try soon, at which point I'll do a follow up, and I also want to follow up once I've tried this set up on a gig or two!
    So far, the only real negative that I can point out is that, obviously, this is at the moment only really useful for the Kemper - whereas some other options can be used with other devices too (Line 6 Powercab in particular)
    You can get my Kemper profiles here www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I'll follow up via email (you'll also be redirected to the profiles and this folder includes my Iridium profiles).
    / johnnathancordy if you want my backing tracks!

    I have the powered version ,it has taken the kemper experience to a new level, the ability to monitor backing tracks through it in FRFR mode while the guitar tone passes through a guitar speaker imprint all through a singular cabinet is a game changer for me.

    I recommend the orange pedal baby as a SS poweramp (I know it might be too late having ordered the Harley Benton already). Anywho, I've had the ehx 44magnum (class D) for a few years and it worked well as small pedal board sized amp in could fit in the helix case for when I needed to bring my own amp for monitoring through a backline cab.
    I tried it against the Orange pedalbaby and the ehx 44 sounded quite loud and nice but the 🍊 pedalbaby (OPB) class AB had a little more smoothness and a slightly better dynamic response compared to the class D of the EHX 44magnum class D. I couldn't compare it to the SD powerstage (SD-PS) personally as it was very hard to get it in AU. But i heard the same differences in EichP42's review of the OPB against the SD PS, with the OPB being more dynamic and sweeter/smoother/richer than the SD-PS, that little bit of extra magic harmonically.
    So I chalk it up to the difference between class AB and D SS poweramps. It would be mostly lost in a mix and would be subtle and the OPB is bigger, but I found myself hearing it esp in high (super) freqs and enjoying the sound through OPB (+Marshall 2x12) than through the ehx 44 mag and from what I've heard in sound comparisons between OPB and SD PS, for what it's worth.
    Anywho, in case it piques your interest, and you get get your hands on one..

    I have been using my unpowered toaster with the kabinet and SD power stage. I still prefer an actual amp when playing/practicing at home. Kemper is great for recording, but for that amp in the room feel, The Kabinet didn't do it for me.

    Hey I‘m using a Celestion F12-X200 FRFR speaker (it‘s almost the same as the Kemper Cone), mounted in a Palmer 1x12 Cab open Back and powered by a Hotone Loudster. First Time I ve powered it up, there was this wow effect for me, it sounds on low Volume most near to a real Amp in a room than I‘ve ever heared bevor, much better than a Headrush FRFR.

    • @equaleyez
      @equaleyez 2 года назад

      This is almost the exact same 'bypass setup' (cheaper) I'm thinking of assembling. But I've read everywhere that is the K12H-100TC Celestion that is almost the same as the Kemper Kone...

    • @thraxas79
      @thraxas79 2 года назад

      @@equaleyez keep in mind, if you use a Kemper, the Kemper-Kone is specialy matched to the build in Cab-Sim to imitate the dynamics on volume, if you use any other IR there should be no big difference. The Datasheet of the K12K-200 aka Kemper Kone seems to be offline, I decided to buy the F12-X200 because of the only Difference was 8 to 4Ohm. The K12H-100TC has a 1,75 inch speaker instead of 2 inch and only 100W but the main difference is 50-10000 Hz to 60-20000 Hz …. But anything above 10000 Hz shouldnt matter for Guitarsound or mostly its better to cut off via Hicut …. So Fullrange isn‘t realy what guitarsound needs and will neve give the dynamics a real Cab does, but it allows great Tone at low and neighbour friendly Volume … and great if you use Backingtracks ;) …. Sorry english isn‘t my native language, but I think you know what I mean … and thats only my 2 Cents, sound is a highly subjective thing.

    Sounded to me like a Modeler that has the "Presence" set at 10 - It was painfully bright. It was picking up all the string shifting noises and squeaks I try to avoid at all costs. I know you're just exploring the settings and sounds, so I thought you might be interested in my impressions on what I'm hearing so far. Thanks

    • @johnnyh64
      @johnnyh64 3 года назад +1

      I would have to agree but I also think for some reason, most of the time John plays the Kemper he seems to prefer really bright profiles compared to the Helix. The Tone Junkie one sounded more in line for me personally. It would be interesting to see if John could try some slightly warmer profiles because I don’t think he spends as much time tweaking the Kemper vs the Line 6 stuff. I could be wrong though.

    I used a Friedman ASM-12 with my Kemper for a good while -- and really enjoyed it; it's a great solution. However, several months ago I put two Kemper Kones into my 2x12 cab and paired it with a Ritter Camplifier SHP. It's really taken things to another level. It truly does provide much more of the mythical amp-in-the-room feel than an FRFR. I've never been more satisfied with an amp than I am with this setup. It ticks my own boxes for how I want an amp to feel and sound -- and it's still so easy to record with! I mostly use MBritt profiles, and with those I rarely use the imprints. I have used the imprints with profiles from other folks and have had good results (though it wasn't always the speaker I *thought* I'd like the most. It's worth experimenting). I tried the Kones as an experiment, and they exceeded my expectations. The Kemper ecosystem continues to to evolve and improve to this day... pretty amazing piece of kit.
    FWIW, as John mentioned, a linear solid state power amp will give more predictable results with the Kones. I used my tube power amp before my Ritter arrived, and it didn't sound quite right. YMMV, of course. I think you also can't get a true reckoning of the Kones' sound mic'ed.

    I've been considering purchasing a FRFR cab to gig with my Kemper Stage. There are so many options out there that it's hard to decide which one to get. Of course, it would be nice to buy either the Kemper cab or the powered version. I do own a Fryette Powerstation that could be used with the passive cab. Can you offer an opinion as to which would be best. I think they both offer benefits. Nice to have it all in one with the powered cab. However, the passive ones seem to be more readily available used for significantly less money. I wish I could try them both before buying.

    I kinda get a feeling that there’s a bit chance of option paralysis with the settings when changing profiles. I have a 4x12 with GT75’s and really liking it. Going monitor out and taking out the cab impulse so l am just hearing the cab. I like the GT75s better than Mesa V 30’s. Go figure.

    • @iliveinsin
      @iliveinsin 3 года назад

      I agree with you. I only tend to like certain speakers and would prefer just to have a couple of real 1x12 speaker cabs. By the way, the GT75 is a massively underrated speaker. I also used to have a 4x12 loaded with GT75s - the tone was amazing and it was great to play, albeit less fun to lug around to gigs! While I tend to prefer greenbacks these days, I still I much prefer GT75s over vintage 30s which I tend to think are a bit overrated outside of high gain metal purposes.
