    Wow! I see why Phyllis defied Clive Davis and did Sophisticated Ladies. She's in her element singing songs from a bygone era. I'm hearing the jazz greats of yesteryears but really hearing my all time favorite Sarah Vaughn. This ain't no damn pop. We were blessed that she stubbornly chose to show us the authentic Phyllis Hyman.

    Ran across this on instagram today. Wow! I'm absolutely blown away. I am a fan of several current artists. And no one could ever take their talents, nor what they've contributed to music, away from them. But this is high level artistry. Something that so many artists' lack today. Wow. What a voice. I'm absolutely blown away. Let me go do some research on Mrs. Hyman real quick.

    💯🦄🔥🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️ one of the most phenomenal voices on the planet even Clive Barker try to control her 💯🦄🔥🌹❤️💯 and since he couldn't he didn't even want her to do this play he said we will ruin her career, so he picked up somebody else who would listen and who was he hungry and Young that was Whitney Houston check it out 💯❗ no one sounded like Phyllis Hyman no one emoted the way she mold how words and voice to your soul 💯❗🙏 I have the privilege of meeting her and getting a hug from her I'll always remember she pretended she was scared to meet me cuz she saw me shaking to see her and I had no idea she was going to put her arms around me miss her but her legacy and her music still plays in my house 💯🦄🌹❤️💯❗🙏

    She was such a beautiful person .................. Depression sucks and it wins way too much. For all of us fighting it - we have to keep fighting it with all we have - ask for love, support or whatever you have to keep above the water. It is a battle you will never understand unless you suffer from it, and it can take you down for weeks at a time. To those that are fighting this battle, I send you POWER with LOVE! ..........RIP P.H. You are so missed....................singing in the heavens with my mother...............................

      Not everyone Suffering from Bipolar Disorder sees it as being that simple. Bipolar Disorder is not that easy to manage for many, even with medication and prayer [& Prayer Works]. Some people do well with the right Medication Others never find what [Medication] works for them and it's a Struggle. This Mental Disease impairs a person's judgment, behavior and the ability to think clearly.

    An absolutely powerful performance. She sang this classic song to perfection. She had beauty, exceptional talent, God given vocal chords and sang every song with heartfelt passion Her special talent left us way too early but she did leave wonderful music that will live on.

    My pre-teen crush. All my buddies had a crush on Pam Grier(I did too), but my favorites were Phyllis Hyman and Millie Jackson. Ms. Hyman had so much talent, beauty, and class.

    OMG, her pain is palpable. Already her demons of alcohol, drugs, food, and men were beginning to devour her. Rest in peace, my sweet angel.

      I realize that this was posted 3 yrs ago, but she didn't battle with drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately it was anxiety and depression. She is so dearly missed.

    Yes, and notice how she's always aware of the LYRIC. When she improvises, it is very tasteful and with a purpose. She continues to tell the story without filling up space with predictable riffs just for the sake of riffing.
    OH, and I almost forgot the gorgeous tone and use of dynamics..

    Broadway "Organic Real Jazz" of surrealistic proficiency and magnitude is in the heart and on the lips of Her Majesty Ms. Hyman.
    I adore and admire her individualized interpretation of this perennial ballad; I know you do too.
    It looks like only yesterday at the Beacon Theatre in New York, New York that I experienced her vocally anointing me back to an evening of euphoric ecstasy when my innermost light was very low.
    What a talented chanteuse!
    What a premature loss!

    This was the first Broadway show I had ever seen and her performance still takes a huge place in my memory bank. I remember how in awe I was of her naturalness, her beauty, her flow, her Her!!!!!!!!!

    @dtrim84 You are right "VERY FEW COULD GO WITH HER VOCALLY." Her voice is so dark, rich and smooth. She's one of those singers that you will never get tired of listening too. You can get you a cup of coffee (or wine) and put Phyllis on and just sit back, relax, breath, think happy thoughts. There are soulful singers out there but none compare. GONE TOO SOON.
