Why does alcohol feel good when it's so bad for you?

  • It turns out we have a very selective memory when it comes to drinking and the way it makes us feel. Our first drink gives us about 18-24 minutes of feeling good while our blood alcohol level rises from drinking it. After that, we get 2-3 hours of coming down from that drink when we feel anxious, irritable, tired, etc.
So we reach for another drink to try to get the good feeling back but it's an elusive chase that just makes the bad feelings worse without giving us the good feeling we remember from that first drink. But we still hold on to the idea that we feel good from drinking rather than realizing that we traded 20 minutes of feeling good for the next day or so of feeling like crap.
And the crazy part is we do it all again just for those 20 minutes of feeling good.

So true Annie, that’s why for 18 years have decided not to take that first drink.

Yes exactly. Very very few stop after just one drink. As you said the brain wants more of that euphoric feeling. So you keep drinking in hopes of getting that first buzz back. Which of course never happens.

Never, no matter how far you chase it!
