Chiming in as an old head (former mid 2000's skate rat). RUclips and social media has done away with the mystique of the skateboarder. Back in the day, all you had were video parts and magazine coverage of these guys. Dudes like Andrew Reynolds, Erik Ellington, etc. all you got to see were those parts. Nowadays, you get to really see and know the skateboarder (at least with the new breed of vlogger skaters) as opposed to the old-school skaters that are on "highly pedigreed" brands today. There's also the question of skill. It's undeniable that a lot of these RUclips skaters (while they're very good) are just not as good as the skateboarders on big brands. What I think will happen is you'll get a blend of the two. Skaters who are phenomenally good, stylish, and can dominate social media will be the true winners. Someone like Neen Williams comes to mind as this new breed.

I just watched this today, thinking it was referring to Jonny’s 2021 part 😅 Glad you’re bringing this modern alternative (new main stream) way of running things into the light.
Hey guys, love the show, found this interesting and wanted to quickly chime in. I’m an independent musician and it seems to me that the skateboarding world is going through a similar thing to what has happened within the music industry. Gone are the days of “having” to be signed to a label to get your music out there. They can still certainly help your exposure to larger audiences for sure, but they are not essential nowadays. You can accomplish a lot by just working hard and releasing your art on your own terms. There are pros and cons no doubt, but it kind of puts you in charge of your own destiny to a point. Keep it up, from way down in New Zealand 🇳🇿 Thought JG’s part was sick 🔥 1000%
Y’all putting Jonny’s name in the title is what drew my attention. I’m new to the community and haven’t come across your group yet - Jonny got you another subscriber!
I think these brands and skaters are more relatable to the everyday Joe skater, whereas, the superstars of the skate world are too far removed these days
Well duh, since I started skating back in the day, skateboarding has gone from a hobby to a professional sport with professional athletes getting paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. It's no different than turning on the TV and seeing Superbowl winning quarterbacks or the MVP of the basketball game.
@@i-never-look-at-replies-lol I think it goes a bit deeper than that. Skateboarding is subjective, whereas sports like football and basketball are objective. This means that skaters who are objectively very talented such as Johnny Giger are shunned by the industry as they are not cool enough or marketable enough. Before the industry had a bigger influence and they decided which skaters got coverage because you would only see skating in a magazine once a month. Now anyone can put themselves out there to the world and these guys are doing well because they're more relatable and they're not relying on the industry to give them the coverage.
Yup. I appreciate even just having the opportunity to see someone on Nyjah's level perform; but Nyjah most definitely isn't relatable, dude is a freak of nature Watching Jonny's channel, you can see the time and effort being put into these end products, you KNOW he's grinding hard like a lot of us out here are, and the end result of his work really expresses that
@@RyTrapp0 Yeah totally agree. It's also nice to see someone stoked to land a trick like when he landed that double flip primo slide. Pretty refreshing
I'm glad you compared it to independent music, that's where it's at, it's fuckin DIY build your own following on your own terms leaving that aside for a minute tho, Jonny's part was insane!
I love seeing you guys getting stoked on what these guys are doing. They're also genuinely some of the best people I've ever had the insanely cool pleasure of meeting.
Best part so far this year. Nobody's going to put out as technical of a part even if they compile their entire career into 1 part. Doubt he gets mentioned for SOTY but nobody is going to touch his tech and his dedication to his craft.
@@bakeraus yeah man i'm always shredding in laax. I wonder where he lives but i think he lives not far from where i snowboard. Also i wonder if he knows my homeboy silvano deflorin a local skater from there.
Jonny's part is better than most of the traditional parts I ve seen - great editing and views, amazing music - super chilled life - that is what skateboarding is for me.
Shop over brand any day of the week. The community built within a shop is amazing, growing up in oklahoma skating I’ve seen many local shops die within a year. Shoutout to core board shop for keeping it real and being there when you need it.
I searched your channel to watch your overall reaction to the madness of Giger’s tricks. Please make a new video for Giger and show his unstoppable technical skills. I’d love to see that, and I know Giger and his fans would all tune in!
To be completely serious, I would treasure a Nine Club interview with Jonny Giger. He is easily my favouite skater of the 'new school' as it were. We all watched Rodney Mullen and wished we could be like him. Giger put in the work and now he is.
Revive does put out full length part videos with the whole team, Jonny is the first to do a stand alone part while getting tricks for the next release, that’s why he got a special graphic.
I shopped revives site directly because of jonny giger's youtube. I love all yalls videos. Thanks for pushing. Both my daughters got their 1st boards this year and they both are constant with it.
Dude revive is killing it I love the path they chose and made happen.. but either way, surprising or not. They deserve so much credit. Big ups for revive
@FotoByTom Holy shit you're right, I guess because of how small it was and something about his body positioning I kept seeing it as a heelflip until I frame-by-framed it.
Really enjoyed the positive vibes here. I remember it used to be really easy to be labelled as a “poser” back in the day if you didn’t fit the popular mould of skater for the time. This always struck me as going against what skating is all about since skating is about doing whatever the hell you want. I like seeing the skate community evolving past the old hateful ways, especially from a group as badass as this.
4:20 I think this is a function of the era in which skateboarding matured, the late 80s and early 90s. Slacker culture was prevalent and self-promotion was kinda "lame"
Just some other points/things to add: I am not a skater and can’t even do a single trick, yet I follow Johnny Giger. His demographic is not just skater viewership, but people who admire/respect skill and good content. I would have never known about Revive and I would have never known many other pages (such as this one) that I now follow all starting around Mr. Giger. He is an incredible guy.
fairly sure it started as Revenge, which was felt to be too un-Christian and then changed to Revive, only to be changed to Andy Schrock's "personal" channel when RUclips started allowing users to change their name.
@@ariekanibalie it wasn't that it was "un-christian" so much that there was a branding conflict with another company that was called Revenge at the time.
I remember meeting Jonny at the Take Over The World video premiere at Ollie’s Skatepark. He was wasted. It was really surprising that one of the Revive riders would just be drunk af at the premiere. I’ll never forget that
Great watch and objective conversation. Gained a sub. I’d encourage all who read this who haven’t watched Gigers flatground project, to do so. Insane stuff.
Yo, I'm all the way from South Africa, 16 years old, I understand what Steezus is saying about the board graphics taking a backside and all that and i fully get it cause with me most of the time i need to worry about the price and size before graphic and so on. Keep up the awesome informative videos love em.
6:54 well one reason johnny's talking to the camera is because the longer the video, the more ads you can have. i think if your videos is over 10 minutes long you can add however many ads you want. so johnny might have a strategy there
if you live in smaller markets, not everything comes out to your neck of the woods. I live in a small city in Canada, even the shops that sell the brands I prefer, i usually have to special order the specific decks I want. I've contemplated ordering a board off of amazon, but only after all the skate shops in my city didn't have the board/couldn't order it (for whatever reason).
He is doing something with algorithms too it seems, he appeared on my RUclips feed one day. I’ve been inspired to start skating again at almost 46, I’ve got cancer so a couple of years of decline. The worst that can happen is I break a bone, I would’ve enjoyed breaking that bone. I’ve broken lots over the years, I could honestly handle one right now. I found you guys after him, so he is doing for people beyond your imagination.
I think anyway people can support themselves skate boarding is good for skateboarding itself. If skater's can support themselves and just skate that rules. i love the revive squad, and the braille squad. Braille inspired me to skate again after 10 years. its good shit.
Gigers the man, earnest and loves skating and loves teaching and showing how to perform tricks for the fun and joy of skating. Very technically sound too, rekindled my love for skateboarding after a decade not skating.
when i was younger always had toy machine and hook ups boards on my walls i loved there art and graphics, still do to this day just in the man cave now.
Our local skateshop has an emergency number. In case you snap your board at the spot, the staff will deliver you a board in your desired size right at the spot in a few minutes.
Jonny should make a podcast discussing how people that have barely put out any actual skate content in the last ten years still consider themselves pro skateboarders.
So glad they related this to the music industry. While listening, I kept thinking about the countless stories I've heard from music artists who'd been fucked over by somebody (or several somebodies) in the industry, and that you're infinitely better off holding onto, and owning your own shit. You'll make more money releasing a record yourself and selling 20,000 copies than you would signing with a major label and selling 2 million.
Right now I think Jonny Giger is the next Rodney Mullen his technical skills are far beyond most skaters out there glad to see you rep Jonny on the nine 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’d love to see you guys talk about GGOS (Global Game of Skate). And go deeper into Johnny’s crazy tricks. Also check out herreinsch (not sure if I spelled his channel name right) but he was the winner of GGOS.
Wow how did i miss that? Great to see Jonny gets some little exposure from the "traditional" scene. You get to know people like Jonny a little when you follow them around on RUclips. It's a little more personal, unlike a high quality cooperate commercial where you're no really sure if everything is genuine. Thinking about it, your regular podcast does almost the same for a big part. For example, before you had Leticia or Nyjah on the show i had no idea if they were entitled assholes or what. All i knew so far was pretty vague. After it i knew those people are cool but now i like them because they proved that they are nice humans, not because they are good a street contests or so. Maybe that doesn't convince a 16 year old, but i'll be 38 tomorrow and i would happily favour a Jonny Giger product board over something else, even if i thought the other one looked a little doper. 5 or 10 bucks on patreon? Sure, i can easily afford it and it's not like i don't get anything back. He get's to have some money and i get to watch a video once a week. Nothing more fair than that. For example i became an instant fanboy of Riley after you had him on. All i need to properly know who i'm dealing with and these RUclips channels do exactly that for each of them. I think it is a super great way to have a (maybe little smaller) but very loyal fanbase.
I think Jonny's part is good. I think even if he's part of teams or groups he's entitled he's very instructional and I for one really appreciate him alone and with whoever hes part of
Speaking of Andy Shrock, I saw him and his son on a TV commercial today while watching the Cardinals Braves game. The commercial didn’t have any skateboarding in it. It was a family father son thing. Can’t remember the product, though.
It makes total sense not to have a revive RUclips page, if each sk8ter has his own page it's multiple chances for footage to go viral. It makes total sense. Love Johnny such a nice guy and makes great content.

That is very true
Yup. I appreciate even just having the opportunity to see someone on Nyjah's level perform; but Nyjah most definitely isn't relatable, dude is a freak of nature
Watching Jonny's channel, you can see the time and effort being put into these end products, you KNOW he's grinding hard like a lot of us out here are, and the end result of his work really expresses that
@@RyTrapp0 Yeah totally agree. It's also nice to see someone stoked to land a trick like when he landed that double flip primo slide. Pretty refreshing
If you haven't seen Jonny Giger's: Flatground Project...
You missed a part of skateboard history...

I'm glad you compared it to independent music, that's where it's at, it's fuckin DIY
build your own following on your own terms
leaving that aside for a minute tho, Jonny's part was insane!
I got two words for you: Mark Suciu
I'm from Switzerland and he fucking shreds!
It's that fresh air bro :) I have tasted it in Verbier snowboarding. Such a nice country and great people
@@bakeraus yeah man i'm always shredding in laax. I wonder where he lives but i think he lives not far from where i snowboard. Also i wonder if he knows my homeboy silvano deflorin a local skater from there.
@@breakfree5028 Some videos say Gams but not sure if he's still there.
Jonny's part is better than most of the traditional parts I ve seen - great editing and views, amazing music - super chilled life - that is what skateboarding is for me.
You must not skateboard.
@@shmooveyea you must not comment

Holy shit Giger on the 9 club. Look momma i made it to Forbes
I was just listening to that song on soundcloud Haha life comes full circle

Now we sip Champagne when we thirsty.. HUHHH
He would be a cool interview on the other show imo
So awesome to see Johnny get some love! I'm 34 and brand new and I'm a huge fan of this guy.
Proof reading is nice too. You must have been so excited you didn't care.
Johnny's Flatground Project is pretty dope
Shop over brand any day of the week. The community built within a shop is amazing, growing up in oklahoma skating I’ve seen many local shops die within a year. Shoutout to core board shop for keeping it real and being there when you need it.
I searched your channel to watch your overall reaction to the madness of Giger’s tricks. Please make a new video for Giger and show his unstoppable technical skills. I’d love to see that, and I know Giger and his fans would all tune in!
Giger completely rules and seems like a legit dude.
Only skater on Revive worthy of being sponsored due to talent.
@@twelvelookslike john hill and Jason park would disagree
oofers bloopers Jason Park is one of the most over rated skaters, he’s not that good.
@@bobbyg3989 if that's what you think you can't deny his creativity is amazing and nah he ain't overrated if anything he's underrated
All i can pay attention to is that kickflip manny in the background
Soon Forgot and a heelflip, not kickflip
@FotoByTom Holy shit you're right, I guess because of how small it was and something about his body positioning I kept seeing it as a heelflip until I frame-by-framed it.
Even better switch
Every interview has this same trick in the background.

Thank you for discussing these people for those who may not be aware of this. Thank you nine club.
I just cant stop admiring that Stevie Williams Deck on the Wall.
Andy Schrock’s channel is pretty much the official revive channel tbh
fairly sure it started as Revenge, which was felt to be too un-Christian and then changed to Revive, only to be changed to Andy Schrock's "personal" channel when RUclips started allowing users to change their name.
@@ariekanibalie it wasn't that it was "un-christian" so much that there was a branding conflict with another company that was called Revenge at the time.
@@Mianless Aha, my bad.
I remember meeting Jonny at the Take Over The World video premiere at Ollie’s Skatepark. He was wasted. It was really surprising that one of the Revive riders would just be drunk af at the premiere. I’ll never forget that
😂 thats so sick.
Great watch and objective conversation. Gained a sub. I’d encourage all who read this who haven’t watched Gigers flatground project, to do so. Insane stuff.
Jonny giger is legit
Please have Jonny on the show, he’s such a smart kid
Yo, I'm all the way from South Africa, 16 years old, I understand what Steezus is saying about the board graphics taking a backside and all that and i fully get it cause with me most of the time i need to worry about the price and size before graphic and so on. Keep up the awesome informative videos love em.
Look at Jonny Gigers video thumbnails, now look at AndrewSchrocks thumbnails.
Jonny you the real skate channel.
The revive RUclips web is what got me back into skateboarding as an adult. Pretty wild.
here i thought you would review his part...
Same, some battletalk action
Man I've been watching giger for years. Good to see him getting more exposure he's put in so much work. BATB too shook to invite again
Jonny is cool and a positive vibe for the people who start skateboarding and he kills the berrics etc! He's so technical!
May the switch flip manual on loop never stop. It's like an eternal fire.
6:54 well one reason johnny's talking to the camera is because the longer the video, the more ads you can have. i think if your videos is over 10 minutes long you can add however many ads you want. so johnny might have a strategy there
That skate part he posted was like 3 minutes long so that’s not it
9:00 He so right with the Lambert comparison; they both have the same 'landing pose' where the look down at their board after they land the trick.
if you live in smaller markets, not everything comes out to your neck of the woods.
Jonny is literally one of the best skaters of the modern era.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for being honest to the current situation.
I was today years old when I learned what TLDR meant. Thank you.
when i was younger always had toy machine and hook ups boards on my walls i loved there art and graphics, still do to this day just in the man cave now.
Our local skateshop has an emergency number. In case you snap your board at the spot, the staff will deliver you a board in your desired size right at the spot in a few minutes.
Would love to see Jonny on the show!
There may not be 'Revive' as a page, but there is 'Braille Skateboarding', which is where they funnel people through
man there are some great skaters on youtube that don't get enough love. Jason Park, Alex Rademaker, Carlos Lastra, RollerSurfer, show them some love
“I bought my board on Amazon” lol ...if anything the Revive/Braille crew destroy kMart Amazon boards...
Jonny should make a podcast discussing how people that have barely put out any actual skate content in the last ten years still consider themselves pro skateboarders.
2021 is his best yet.
How many great amazing skaters in the 90's that we never to got to see same a music but now we can . So good 👌🙌

Seen Him Skate On The Braille Channel - He’s A Really Chill Guy & His Skating Really Speaks For Itself.. Also He Has 588,000 Subscribers As Of Late..🤙
That “ger” joke flew way over their heads.
I got some graphics :) just trynna find the printing press
Right now I think Jonny Giger is the next Rodney Mullen his technical skills are far beyond most skaters out there glad to see you rep Jonny on the nine
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Daewon would like a pretty harsh word with you
I’d love to see you guys talk about GGOS (Global Game of Skate). And go deeper into Johnny’s crazy tricks. Also check out herreinsch (not sure if I spelled his channel name right) but he was the winner of GGOS.
You mean the contest that where held for a whole year where the price money was 3 pairs of wheels by a shitty brand worth 70 dollars ?
Johnny giger and Andy Anderson two of the most genuine skaters.
It makes total sense not to have a revive RUclips page, if each sk8ter has his own page it's multiple chances for footage to go viral. It makes total sense. Love Johnny such a nice guy and makes great content.
Yo homie in the MW hat was so on point with how he described these things
Let's get Andy Schrock on an episode. Would make for some great conversation on the industry as a whole.
get johnny on the podcast
Is that Shane O'Neill in that frame behind you looping a kickflip manual?
Shout out to people who are multitalented.
4:46 ever since i started rocking deck rails i do care about my graphic now actually
