DIY Floating Table: Building Without Jointer or Thickness Planer

- I'd been meaning to make this floating table since we moved into the house, but kept on putting it off. I made the table with mostly the tools that I had, no jointer and no thickness planer. It did not go smoothly. But I got there in the end and I (and my wife) are happy with the result.

Don't sell yourself short. The video was a joy to watch, and the result speaks for yourself. That table will bring comfort and satisfaction to you and your family for years!
Thanks very much, hope so!
Your videos great I really enjoy them and I agree don’t sell yourself short, cheers and look forward to more
Totally agree with you.
As someone who is often doing projects without all the proper tools I feel your pain.
The table and bench turned out great, and now it has a story to go with it.
Glad you understand! In the end all the pain during building process is mostly forgotten now.
"My wife told me- I mean kindly asked me..." Excellent save, good job. Table looks great.
Can't tell you how important and grateful the average DIY guy is that you shared your WTF's with us...Thank you.
No worries, yeah, I wanted to show the true process.
@@TokyoLlama the messup's make the video. else it would be boring to watch.
Those WTF moments are indeed very important. They suck at the time but they are invaluable for learning
That table turned out so well! As someone who gets easily discouraged by mistakes and setbacks, I found the video genuinely inspiring! Mad props for your perseverance! I think I would have cried multiple times. 😅
Hey, you learn lots from your mistakes so consider them a blessing!
Mate, for a first attempt at a table, that was pretty damn impressive! Loved the way it turned out.
Thanks a lot!
I cannot tell you how many times I've had to rip out seams, toss batter, and unravel and reknit. You are learning, honing skills and appreciate good craft work. FYI I think the table looks great. I love how the table flows with the shelve, that's impressive.
Thank you! Yes, it's all a learning process.
lol! I love the "yeeeah no" and the shot of the small crowded family table. Beautiful table, your hard work paid off.
I can hear people saying “love your dining table, where did you buy it?” You made a beautiful unique piece of furniture for your family’s day to day life that I’m sure it will be passed down for generations, money can’t buy that 🙌
" Because I don't have a Jointer.... "
Good lord, how many hours a decent Jointer can save me. If only my father has the mindset to not force his tool beyond it's recommended usage, we might have a Jointer and a Bandsaw instead of three dead Hand Planer, one dead cicular saw, one burned out cordless hand drill ( old model, without any spareparts available anymore ) and one cracked hand grinder.
Anyway, ranting aside.
The table turned out great !. Great job, Jaya !
Ha ha, well, I learnt the hard way trying to get by without a thickness planer.
Your bespoke furniture fits the space well. I personally think practical videos like this, ones that show someone applying what they've learned from others, are an important intermediary step between absolute beginner and master craftsman - your video is realistic and counteracts the hard to obtain perfection we see on pro and semi-pro woodworking channels. It's actually super inspiring to see, so thanks!
No worries, glad you liked the vid. Since I’m no master carpenter thought it would be more interesting to show the struggles of a regular DIYer trying to make nice furniture.
Lovely table! It is so nice how it matches the floor. Super fit as well! My stomach turned and I felt your pain several times watching the video. Thanks for persevering - it was all worth it in the end!
Honestly, watching your videos always puts me in the same relaxing mood as watching Bob Ross paint. Awesome job! 👌
Thank you so much 😀
I admire your honesty. I'm sure most RUclipsrs, with the magic of video editing, would tell us everything went without a problem. I enjoyed the vid.
Glad you could use my method of joining long boards with the tracksaw. My heart sank when you had your router mishap. I think I would have thrown a tool or two.
Thanks, it’s such a great idea, I’m happy to keep using this method going forward, but the router sled… I’ll get a thickness planer. Thanks again.
I share these with my dad. We used to do carpentry projects together for his business. I love this channel!
Thank you, best wishes to you and your dad!
"A bit annoyed" at the router bit going too deep was definitely an understatement haha. I would have been fuming.
Ok so maybe I was more than a bit annoyed 😂
I'm here to say I like the table. I know you had a care factor factor going on, but tables are hard. I like the floating table top effect. I have a very large Tasmanian blackwood table made by my father (3 m x 1.5 m) nearly 40 years ago. It was influenced by the brutalist archicture of the time and I have always loved it. It is super solid and needs at least 3 people to even lift it. It was built as the "everyday table", but it doubles as my desk and dining table. The great thing is that the "mistakes" made by my father make me feel close to him 40 years later. Revel in your learning experience!
Thank you, yes, I probably could have made a more simple table for my first attempt, but now that it's done I'm happy with it, have learnt a lot and look forward to making another one, one day.
@@TokyoLlama Lol, exactly, one day.... 😁
(and you probably will). Btw, I forgot to say earlier you all huddled around the old table for Christmas was very funny. Your wife was barely squeezed in! 😂
My goodness Jaya. What a gargantuan task. I always love watching you construct things. The table is magnificent. So much time and effort put into this table. You will have so many wonderful meals around it. I know how you feel when things don't go the way you want them too but such is life. I love it.
You sell yourself short. I watched the link to your inspiration table and the builder was indeed a true craftsman, but so sir are you.
A true craftsman makes the most of the resources available to him/her and you did just that. You came up with solutions to problems with what you had available and persevered. The result is beautiful and I love the story that goes along with the idiosyncrasies of your result. It is a true family treasure. Very good job! The home builder that built your house must be so happy to have people as caring as you and your family living in the house he built. I'm so happy for both of you that you know each other.
Nice work, Jaya. Your carpentry skills have gotten quite impressive over the last few years. And once again, I’m surprised by just how many similarities there are between our two houses. Your dining room table (along with the room decor) looks a lot like ours…right down to the posts you had to fit it between. In contrast though, we cut a notch into the end of ours so it actually fits around the post. (My idea. Surprised my wife went for it.) The other major difference is… that we got our carpenter to make it for us. So again, I’m impressed by your skills. お疲れさまでした! 🍻
Nice idea to notch around the posts. Maybe steal that idea if I remake this at some point!
If table is not meant to be moved, then sure, sounds like an idea
@@W4iteFlame You CAN actually detach it from the post, but it’s a bit of a pain, so the table usually stays where it is. (It is kind of a unique design… maybe I’ll show it off in a future upload? 😆)
@@Jordan-inJapan well, I was expecting it. Also, guess I have to check your channel one of those days
@@W4iteFlame 🍻
Love the table - simply gorgeous. The floating table top - wow! I call it the "Give a shit" factor. I have plenty of those moments when I'm at my ceramic studio.
Ha ha, yes, everyone has a certain point they reach.
The table and bench BELONG THERE 👍👍👍
Thanks, happy with the way they look in the room.
I’ve been around third generation carpenters, and you do wonderful job on this table!👍👍👍
Please don’t beat yourself up for one little mistake. I’m still shocked that you made some thing this beautiful and sturdy at your first go!
Love from Los Angeles ,
💕👍🙏🏻
As an old keyboard carpenter, i can only give the best grades!!!
😂 thanks!
I really felt the "care factor is low" statement. Sometimes you just gotta send it!
Yeah, I just wanted to finish it at that point.
Damn, that one piece of Masterworks right there, friend! You just made Ron Swanson proud!
Send this video to Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson).
He probably feeling something watching your work. Then, sent you a personal invitation to his workshop & a bottle of Lagavulin to congratulate on the new stunning dining table
Great job, Jaya! I guess the learning is part of the fun and your results are amazing anyways!
Thank you! Definitely fun to learn how to do it. I’d like to tackle the tabletop again sometime - after I get a thickness planer of course!
@@TokyoLlama Ask around town to see if any woodworking shops have a thickness planer that is wide enough for your project. The result would be the same, alot cheaper and alot less stress.
As I say " With a little help from my friends ".
The final version of that is a wooden work of art. No telling how long a table made that way will last.
@@rcollinge325 Thanks, that's a great idea!
Ishitani - GREAT inspiration. I assume by now you have discovered that the problem with the router is the bit collar loosening on you and allowing the bit to slip. Give it a good cleaning to get rid of the sap and other flotsam clogging the router collet and the bit shank. Then stop occasionally to reassure that the collet is still tight on the bit. I assumed that you would resort to using hand planes to do most of your smoothing. Surprise - you didn't. Using hand planes to do reduction of major warps and cupping can speed the thicknessing process. Glad to see you back on RUclips.
Thanks, yes, I didn't realise that the flotsam and jetsam in the collar would have such a big effect as I made sure it was tight before using. Lesson learned (after making the same mistake twice...) In regards to hand planes, I wanted to use them more, but mine was blunt, and then when I researched how to sharpen Japanese hand planes... to be honest I got lazy, so tried to rely on the sander.
You have made an heirloom. Great example of perseverance and creativity.😊
It’s so great to see a new video from you. I love your attitude. So you made some mistake! You learn from those. Don’t be a stranger. Looking forward to more.
Thank you, working on the next videos!
It's a great table and it will be there next time you have guests along with a story.
Thanks, yes, that's very true.
Wicked sense of humour. Great job. Buy the thicknesser
Thanks! Yes, that’s definitely next on my list.
It's gorgeous! You did it with a few tools short, and still have all your fingers - major win
Ha ha, that's the most important thing!
However you got there...it looks beautiful in that gorgeous kitchen. Wow.
Thank you. This came just in time. My wife asked me to make all the kitchen cabinets match the new ones we purchased last year. I am cutting, gluing, and clamping the first (of 14) door. I don't know when my router "event" will happen, but your video gave me a chance to calm down. Thank you again.
Good luck, mistakes are going to happen but in the end you'll get there!
That is an absolutely gorgeous table. I watched the bench video first and am in continuous awe at your talent. The style of furniture is timeless, too. I can only imagine how good these pieces will look in 50 years time! You are an inspiration, really. I want to make something now haha! At the moment I'm just trying my best with cutting skirting boards for a room with bare brick walls which is trouble enough for my skill level. :D
It's joyful that you never give up! It turned out to be very nice, use it with lots of happiness!
Thank you!
Looks great. You probably feel good when you sit down at the table because you know how much work you put into it, even though its not exactly what you wanted. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, have to admit I'm proud of it, even if not perfect.
Love the last shot of you just sitting there by yourself absorbing it. The true satisfaction of making something yourself.
Thanks 🙏
If for some reason I want to watch more !? You bet I Do !
But seriously : I understand why you can be frustrated when your build doesn't go as you planned, but the process as much as the result are great! I wish I was even a tenth as efficient as you are !
Thank you, there's a lot that editing hides, as if I really showed everything the video would go on for hours!
The end result is just perfect. So handy to have those little shelves right there as well. Well done, and forget about the slip ups. No one will notice or care during the years of use you will get. Seeing you all huddled around the tiny table made me smile.
Thank you, yes, it's pretty neat (architect's idea) to have the shelf there.
Good day. I love it and enjoy it as well. I myself watched a lot of RUclips videos and I am put back then. I love to see organic videos and I learn more from you than the high tech and sanitized one. Please put more like this 🙏
Superb. I don’t know whether I like the table or the video work more.
These videos are always a treat.
Thanks so much! 🙏
You are a natural engineer. Wonderful job. I love your wood shed. Great place to put wood.
Thank you. Yeah, it's handy to have that space.
It may have been a bumpy road for you, but it's still a beautiful table. Well done.
Thank you!
I’ve watched you since the very beginning- what a long way you’ve come! It’s been fascinating and you have a wonderful home so much of it you have done yourself you should be rightly proud of your achievements. Of course it hasn’t all gone perfectly but life is about learning. Your children and grandchildren will be enjoying the house for years to come. ❤🏴
Thank you, yes, can't expect everything to go smoothly, but as long as you learn then it's satisfying just the same.
The most important thing. Dose the cat like it? Nice work, I can relate to the planing bits drifting down in the collet. If the collet nut is not tightened that will happen. But that is the ease answer. If there is saw dust packed into the cuts in the collet this can prevent you from being able to properly tighten the collet nut. I have had this issue with both routers and, even worse, CNC routers. Hope this information helps and keep up the beautiful work on restoring that house. Got to keep that cat happy.😀
The cats are not allowed to touch it! Thanks - it seems that was the most likely reason for the slipping. I did blow dust out but not particularly carefully.
I will in fact be heading over to the second channel to see more, thank you very much lol
The table looks fantastic.
Thank you!
My wife told me , I mean asked me 😂😂😂 I nearly pissed myself with laughter , bravo my friend bravo , it’s clear you are happily married 👏👏👏
Great work on the table. It looks really good. Things happen, but who cares. No body is going to know. Well, except we who watched the video. But without the correct tools, it looks really good! Great work.
Thanks very much!
You are an amazing guy! Hardworking like no one. Thank you for sharing your videos. The table is beautiful. Congratulations. Enjoy.❤
Thank you very much!
It looks great! I hope your family has countless happy moments and occasions around the new table. And thank you for choosing to show us your mistakes too, in an era when people often pretend to be perfect. It is comforting to see that you make mistakes too - I 'm projecting here LOL but you are way more skilled and resourceful than I'd be in the same situation. 😊
Thanks a lot. I could have shown even more little mistakes, but then the video would have gone on forever!
Hi Tokyo Llama,
I have been a wood working hobbyist myself for 7 years and have had similar troubles with my routers. My problems were caused by the collet and bit shank being different sizes. In one case I had a 1/2" collet and a 12mm shank bit.
On my palm router I had the original collet that was always too tight. I ordered a new 1/4" collet and it fixed the problem. Collets can be ordered in imperial or metric and are inter-changeable. Love your videos!
Thanks! I have both the 1/2" and 12mm collets, so that wasn't the problem, but others have pointed out that dust in the collet was likely the main cause.
Wow that has turned out beautifully! It looks as though it was part of the kitchen installation, it fits perfectly 😊
Thanks very much!
Thank you for showing all the ups and downs. I am learning so much right along with you. I feel like everyone of your struggles is my struggle and everyone of your victories, mine as well. Gives me courage and hope to carry on. Shed a few tears myself today when the simplest of tasks, turned out to be another problem bigger than it should have been. It's good to be reminded to carry on. Thank you for that. 💙
Yes!! A Tokyo Llama video! :D much love for your content
Thanks 🙏
That is a Grand job well done. when things go a little bit wrong the best craftsmen/women gloss over the bad bits for the perfect looking results. Not that anything you have produced has ever been bad I hasten to add.
Amazing video! What I loved was that you were incorporating so much from what you learnt as well as the wooden nail-less style (which led to how the house was built to begin with). It gives a really nice touch to your carpentry work. Your videos really give a lot of inspiration and exudes the hard work and grit you are willing to go through to make something. It just makes people happy and tickles the DIY spirit! I never get tired of watching your videos, funnily enough haha.
Thanks, yes, I tried to use screws as little as possible. The only metal is for the screws and threads holding the tabletop to the frame but I figured since Ishitani did it like that, it was alright!
It's a BEAUTIFUL table, and you learn a lot. 😊❤❤
I really enjoy your content. Wish there was more of it.
I hope all is well with your and your family.
The table fits snugly into the corner. Thx for sharing the video. 🙂
No worries, thanks for watching!
This was just like watching my husband doing a project :)
He’s a master craftsman too? 😁
@@TokyoLlama love to your wife -- she's a patient woman.
Congratulations. It wasn't a particularly easy project and you made a good show of it. I say this as a British carpenter who has spent the past decade living in Japan.
Thank you. Was probably a bit ambitious for my first table.
Kudos to you for continuing with this project. It must have been very frustrating BUT the end result is so beautiful. Congrats 👏😀
Thank you so much!
This was a joy to watch! I missed your content, and yes I will be watching you make the bench as well 😂 Despite the bumps along the way, the table came out looking absolutely amazing! The knots in the new boards you had to buy just adds more character to the table too. ❤
Thanks, yes, the knots gave me a chance to try using the epoxy, which is something I had been interested in doing.
Love the your channel, always look forward to your videos, love the music, it’s so calming. Love how your showing your learning process. Love everything! Ditch the wife jokes, women are tired because the jokes are tired.
Thank you! Point taken!
Good woodworker are just better at hiding their mistakes. I love your work and think it looks great
Thanks 👍
I think your table looks great! We all learn from our mistakes and you triumphed in the end. Keep up the good work. I love the channel. You are living my dream. I live in the US but would love to live in Japan and restore an old farm house. Take care
If I ever get invited for dinner at your house, I'll definitely check out the underside of the dinning table!
Ha ha, I will block anyone attempting to look under the table!
Despite your misgivings Jaya, that turned out awesome, beautiful work, something to be proud of mate, well done! Cheers TJ
Thanks, TJ
Good to see you again
It’s been a while hopefully the house is progressing and the garden how it that
I think you gave it a good go
Jaya you don’t need a thicknesses just a good planer
I’ve been making table tops for years and all I use is a planner and a good belt sander and I join it the same with biscuits and the bit in the router
You just work the top down with the planer then belt sand it to with in an inch of its life
When you getting that roof above you fixed 👍👍👍🇦🇺
Thanks, things moving along slowly but surely. Been doing work in the garden. Will show that at some point.
Esta increible tú casa. Definitivamente tienes mis respetos. Eres un grandisimo diseñador, un saludo!
Muchas gracias! Saludos desde Japón 🇯🇵
Yay!!! New Tokyo Llama video!!! 😊
Well done! With those kind of setbacks and than to still persevere is impressive to say the least. The table looks great and you should be proud of what you achieved, and appreciate the learnings you acquired along the way.
Oh I needed this video this morning. I could literally feel my blood pressure drop and the tension in my face go away. My job can be tense but if I approach it like you do wood. I am ok. Thanks. Oh I will add. By that I mean. A little at a time, no rush it will all come together
Very glad to hear that my video helped you in some way. Yes, I work slowly when I have time, though I'm not under (much) pressure.
I was so eager to watch your next video! The last week I watched again all the previous videos!
Is good that you show exactly how DIY projects come out. Usually youtubers make them look super easy! In the process of doing something for the very first time we make lots of mistakes and is really hard when you don't have the right tools.
Some years ago I made a wooden doll house using almost Neanderthal tools and it took so much time and effort..
Thank you, that' right! It's hard to show the time and effort required when you're not a pro, and I could have shown a lot more (but the video would have been five hours long...)
A for effort! As a beginner woodworker, I would still be quite happy with that result! Nobody but you will notice the mistakes, so don't be too hard on yourself!
Thank you!
The floating table top is a fantastic design feature on this piece. Awesome work. One thing is the knotty boards stand out. Something to think about is laminating the top with an interesting natural wood. Maybe a cherry or maple. That might be a super contrast to all the cyprus in the kitchen. Lovely work as is to be sure.
Bravo! You made an heirloom!
Thank you!
I have a bunch of things to do today so I tell myself I will skip over parts. Well, that didn't work and I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it, like usual. You are a master at what you do, mistakes and all.
Thanks! And sorry, hope you managed to get everything you needed to do, done!
@@TokyoLlama No need to be sorry, tomorrow's another day LOL.
The best thing about it is you made it to fit and match the house and your family. The light hits the wood matching the rest of the kitchen perfectly. The design is very neat!
Thanks very much!
That structure looks pretty wobbly. It must do hell of a walk when you try pushing it across the floor.
No, it’s fine.
Ace table. Soooo good. Awesome. Love the tip re prefect joining edges using the track saw.
Thanks Merv!
you should be proud of yourself you did a great job it all worked out in the end and like you have said many times you are not a professional carpenter but i think from what i have seen you have come a ong way your carpentry skills have improved immensely since i hav been watching your videos. don't be so hard on yourself and alays remember the carpenters rule measure twice cut once.
Thank you, yes, I always try to stick to that rule but somehow forgot when centring the legs on the frame. 🙄
Very nicely done on the table. It’s beautiful 👌🙏🥰
The table turned out beautifully, and the wood grains are gorgeous. What I liked the most was that you used materials you already had on hand before deciding that you needed to buy a bit more to finish the project. "If at first you don't succeed, try try again". Making mistakes is all part of learning, and your woodworking skills are showing more and more improvement. Keep it up!!!
Wow what an elegant table! The effort certainly paid off. Heading over the watch the bench video now.
Thanks a lot!
I do want to see more. You have done a wonderful job. It is a beautiful table its imperfections make it unique. Congratulations and a hug from Spain.
Thank you, greetings from Ibaraki!
It turned out so well, it looks beautiful !
mate I have been in fits of laughter watching this - comedy genius
Ever since you brought up your idea about how you want the dinner table, I've been so anxious about when you'll build it. It was worth the wait! The table came out beautiful! Like some have said in the comments, "don't sell yourself short." You did a magnificent job and only you, the builder, know the imperfections and nobody needs to know. Hahaha! But you can definitely come back to it later to make any adjustments.
Thanks very much. It will go on my list but maybe in a few years time I will have another go at making it.
Hi Jaya , I have wondered where you were and how the house was progressing. I assumed you needed a job to save up for more renovations. The table looked awesome, and I was impressed how you built the sled to solve the problem of planning. Hopefully we will see you renovating and building furniture more frequently, your carpentry and plastering skills have developed remarkably.
Thanks, yes, need to pay for the new windows somehow... More videos and projects in the works.
It is always therapeutic to watch you do your craft, especially when done methodically.
🙏
Such admirably precise (mostly, lol) and tidy work. Really great job! Congratulations, it looks great.
Thanks - that sums me up “mostly precise”. 😂
Absolutely beautiful 🤩 so glad enjoyed watching the videos you showed it’s nice 👍 you do great job🥰👋👋
It turned out beautiful! seriously impressive.
The table blends in with the floor. I suggest painting it to add some depth to the overall beautiful place you've put together.
Finally a new video. Just a few minutes in and I already laughed about you saying that you would mainly work with tools you already have and then you showed what I can only assume is just a small part of your inventory of power tools. You renovated a house after all so you probably have all the tools😄
Yes, but I told no lies! 😁 I have accumulated quite a few tools though it was satisfying getting use out of ones I'd bought for other purposes.
To joint the edges you could also flip them up, clamp together and use your flattening jig. Though it's definitely a slow way. People do the same thing with a thickness planer.
I found the track saw method to be easy and almost perfect - happy to do it that way next time.
