🤔 Do you invest in courses, books or coaches to advance your career faster? Or do you prefer to do the research yourself because it’s not worth wasting your money on that stuff and all the information is available anyway? Leave your answers in the comments below 👇
I research myself, but I'm not afraid to hire a coach. It helps to get 1 on 1 instant answers to your questions. I did this for my career and it helped clarify a lot of my questions about the job market. As the provider of high cost services, remember that your client, if they genuinely want to advance themselves, are expecting exceptional value for their time. Don't go on tangents. Respect the clients time. If I'm paying hundreds or thousands of dollars an hour of my own money, I'm expecting pure value and no filler.
I am someone who has bought A LOT of courses and loves learning. I want it streamlined. If I get a couple solid gold nuggets its worth it. I think there is a few other mindsets that would also be helpful. 1)How much can I charge? 2) How do I not feel guilty asking for that much. 3) Who should I target to ask that much? A few ideas for future videos. PS Congrats on asking $15k a day and bumping it to $35k a day.
Best advice I ever got from my mentor when I started my business...Don't charge based on your time and effort. Charge based on the value you bring to the client. They are paying for your time, but also for all of the investment you've done to gain the expertise to help them. So this makes sense to me that people who consume more development services will understand what value they bring.
this is so helpful, Jonathan, thank you. i'm in early days as a freelancer, but *so* find professional development costs to be worth it. this will help me to think about when i'm considering these kinds of expenses.
It depends on who is teaching the course. There are a lot of charlatans in UX and a lot of misinformation. So I would look at the course outline and who is teaching it to see if it's worth the money or not. Also, it depends on what country you live. I'm from Panama and we don't make a fraction of what someone in the US that does the same thing. Sometimes you just can't afford it.
This is so good for me to hear. I've invested thousands into developing, constantly! Whether it be listening to a marketing book on Audible or investing in a course. I now have so much knowledge I've recently raised my day rate and this is why. Because I'm resourceful and my mind's a sponge. Thank you for this vid.
I absolutly agree with the necessity of a mindset shift about money but there is one very important factor you are forgetting (and most coaches/online courses providers and teachers do too) : Priviledge. Many people that are looking to grow do not have the same priviledge as others do. And yes, some might say that it is a choice and that if someone truly want's it, anything is possible but that is not the reality. Education, typical or unconventionnal, is a priviledge and it is important that we recongnize it.
Totally agree it's super important to know your value and where to position yourself in the market so you attract the right client. I too learnt this the hard way, by changing my title from freelancer to consultant allowed me to not only 3x my day rate but get clients to see me as a team rather than an individual. However, I think it's important to stress that when it comes to buying any course or coaching, be realistic about what you can afford, and remember to factor in or leave yourself enough money to actually implement what you have learned. I think it was Brian Tracy who said "knowledge is nothing unless implemented"! IE don't move on to the next course until you have finished what you are working on.
It does make sense, Jonathan. I think you've got something there. It can take time to realise that investing in yourself saves so much time, which, as you say, then allows you to be further along on your journey much faster. The irony of this is not lost on me. Thanks for the video.
Only for people who manage to grow out of their "brokeness" though. People who are REALLY broke can't grow out of it just by changing their mindset. That will make them more broke... I hope people realize being poor IS NOT majorly about the mindset you have. But I can agree at some extent with the content based on where I am today on life... I do have a cheap mindset that comes from broken days of years past, and that does consume more of my time, I've been noticing it. I now try to be thankful for my current privilege and expend more on stuff that will save my time. Eg, I stopped cheaping out for a dishwasher, bought a cost-benefit one and I am THANKFUL for not wasting an hour a day washing dishes by hand. I did installed it on my own to save a few bucks (and I love some DIY so why not). But yeah, this is just one example, paying gladly for services is something I've been trying more and I'm learning how it also helps save time. Hope one day I can pay blindly for more stuff for myself.
First thing is to be great in what you do and have a good marketing, as designer you need to have a great portfolio and be present on social media like dribbble, instagram, etc.

To get 30k/day I suppose you’re not only involving in UX part, larger the business decision?

This video is GOLD and a eye opener for me, tired of being cheap, thanks so much!
This is awesome guys!

Rich of mind attracts rich of pocket.
It works the poor way round too.

I guess it maks sense, blocking energy from going out means little energy you recieve back. Thanks!

one piece of advice I heard recently was to look for a big customer and not a small one if you can of course manage it
Damn True
How did you get your first customer?
Thanks so much for sharing this. It's so true. I've seen this trend myself
Thanks for your comment!
That was great and all, Jonathan, but can I get back my 5 mins from those 7? LOL🤣 See you in Amsterdam 😎
Love that you're talking about this Jonathan. Having a ¨broke boi¨ mindset holds back so many people.
