As someone who struggles learning by ear (spoiled by the ease of the internet), it blows my mind when people can play something just by listening to it once. It takes me ages to figure out stuff by ear. hahaha
It's one of those things that the more you do it, the easier it becomes. Don't give up. Try to only look up parts that you absolutely can't figure out. Over time it'll become natural.
Frölunda! Anyways, you learn little tricks that make it easier. Its easier to think in harmony than in frets. That way the relations actually make sense. You only have 12 notes, the other octaves are just timbre. First note usually sets the scale. Minor major third? With that set the rest slots in much easier. If you're in a daw, try hipassing everything below 800 and add a bump around 2-5khz. Usually helps with making the tonality of the guitar easier to discern.

And you’re right when you say that the riffs don’t have to be super technical to be awesome! Gojiri are awesome at it! I can now go and try for myself. I'm ready to assume that a lot of us are guitar players and I'm sure that there's dads (and moms!) that like to learn songs just for fun but with work, kids and most importantly, god aweful online guitar tabs, having a pro like you learning songs like that can speed up the learning process A LOT.
