Seth, While you already spent the money on a gas auger, I do highly recommend the Ryobi 40v auger. I was able to drill 7 fence post with ease. It only used 1 bar of battery on my 4ah battery. I think with 2-3 batteries in rotation, you could complete a large project with no issues. It also has kick back protection to not rip off your arm.

We use an auger like that for deck posts at work. We usually have two people on it in anything but soft sand. Also we don’t go in and out like that, it can get way too wild. Just hold on and let it eat. Let off the gas, both guys lift it straight out, move to the side and blip the gas to clear the dirt off.

Back in my college days I built tennis courts in the summers (lots of post hole digging). The gas powered auger is great until you hit a big rock and rip your shoulder out of socket. We added an auger attachment to our skid-steer, which was fantastic. Since you already have the excavator, you should look into an auger attachment for that.

The auger attachment with a cheap pin looks pretty suspect. Having some type of reaction bar to prevent it from spinning would greatly help with using it solo. We used 10' bars when driving 6" soil anchors (hydraulically). Super easy to control.

Using an auger in western NC is like driving your car at night with no lights on. Those rocks underground will rip your shoulders off

ooh, Augers... I used one with a buddy for some landscaping work, and it was about 5 feet tall, and weighed close to 150 pounds. It was huge. Clunkers, but they definitely work.

Using the auger around roots you should get a Sawzall and diablo super long wood blade that will cut the roots out quick and you will be on to the next hole. Can't wait to write I can solve one day be safe Seth.

Be careful with using one lift if you load one side heavy it could tip everything. It's better to use to jacks for the gator. Stick magnet with a cloth over it will help picking up metal shavings
