Don't EVER ride the White Line, unless your dad tows you in

  • We got rained out during the Sedona trip, but had a few hours of dry trail and great weather on Sunday evening. Lars Romig and his son Ronin guided us on a ride through some of Sedona's local trails, where we learned about "risk management".
Lars Romig has ridden "The White Line" countless times by now. It's not REALLY a trail, and it wasn't built or designed to ride on. This rock formation has existed in some capacity for millions of years. Nobody recommends you ride the White Line, and that includes me.

This was a pretty cool experience to be part of. Before you judge, consider some of the extremely dangerous things you do day to day that you're totally used to and think nothing of. Yes, the White Line is dangerous. Watch the clip I included of the bike tumbling down if you think it's all some kind of illusion. But there's a certain brand of person who craves these kinds of experiences, and we can only hope they partake in them as carefully and diligently as possible. Some of us may never understand their motivation, just like I'll never understand the knee-jerk hate. In any case, with the help of his dad, Ronin is building his own Instagram account with more traditional desert riding. Let's get him off to a good start! instagram.com/_mini_mongo/

It's stupid because it is unnecessarily dangerous. Otherwise, it's nothing. If there wasn't cliffs to fall off of and die on, nobody would care. Bike stuff, if it is dangerous, the danger should be inherent in what you're doing. Like flipping a bike is dangerous, but the danger is incidental.
You can make anything dangerous by forces outside what you are doing. Like you could put a bed in a place that if you fall off, you will die. That doesn't make sleeping dangerous.

Same goes for sailing and water sports in our family. We would push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable by those that don't know.

I just ran into an old timer who did this and said it was no big deal. The way he talked about it made it sound easy and he said he would do it again no problem. BTW this old timer was talking about riding mountain bikes since the 80's and just retired from working at a bike shop. But after watching this video there is no way I would leave the safety of chicken point. Maybe that old timer figured he has already done all he wanted to do in life and if he slipped off that line well, he had already accomplished all he wanted to do in his life. I still got a lot of stuff I want to accomplish in my life. And for me managing risk means staying off that white line.

Great video! I ridden some sketchy lines and broken a rib last year, so my perspective has changed a little. If there is only a 1% chance that you fail and you ride that line as often as they do, they are playing the odds game with high consequences. It's surprising to hear a father say that he trusts his son's judgement....oh yeah, the son's 12years old? I just have a hard time wrapping my head around that... Still great video and riding!

Granted most of these were from snowboarding it’s a similar sport in many ways. Can’t always predict the outcome of a sport that requires pushing the boundary for progress. An experienced rider towing his 12 year old? I think that’s AWESOME. Would I want my son (don’t actually have kids) to die on a mountain bike ride? No. But would I want to teach him to assess his own abilities and limitations and to prudently calculate risks? Absolutely YES! I’m German and us Germans are probably the worst safety freaks in the world. Humanity doesn’t thrive on a risk-less environment. My two cents anyway.

I met a local out there in Sedona, and he told me about the white line plus. It’s as the name suggests it’s the white line plus a little extra. I think there’s a video of it. The guy I met name was Simon bosman.

While not Sedona, we went Moab on Tuesday. Was a blast but we didn't do anything spectacular other than dissuade a young lady from trying the North 40 on a gravel bike 🤷‍♂️. Showed her where the green trails were and then we road North 40 to Maverick among other things. By the way, Maverick was way too short. Can't wait till Phil's World in SW Colorado is ridable again.

My son and I”s goal in a few years is to build a mountain bike trail park with a campground. You should make one and give us tips.🍻

I'd never seen that clip of someone's bike plummeting off of the white line. I didn't realize it was that high and steep!
Anyway, I'll never ride it, but I'd probably walk out there...maybe.

Hey seth, can you do a glove review? From cheap, to expensive, from fingerless, to full gloves. Basically a guide for beginners that need gloves.
