I just made some of this after finding a tick crawling on my shoe (Ack!!)😲 Since I remember you mentioned rose geranium oil a while back(and I bought some), I went straight to my computer and looked up this video. Since I don't have any holistic vets here in upstate NY, I really appreciate that you shared what your vet told you. THANK YOU so much! I'm always trying to protect my family(including two doggies) from those pesky ticks! Thanks again Kelly - I appreciate you! 💖
I bought this oil last spring (same brand as you) - we had just been putting a drop on the bottoms of our pants and the tops of our shoes... this idea seems a lot more convenient... just spray and go. I'll have to try this - thanks for posting!
Hi I wanting to know where you get your Rose Geranium oil from now? I looked on amazon and seen reviews that it's changed and not made the same anymore so it doesn't work..
Could I use everclear grain alcohol if I don't have vodka? or could I use a carrier oil and use a dropper instead of spray? How much drops rose geranium if I put in carrier oil?
Does this still work because I have read some reviews on Amazon saying this rose Geranium is not the same as it was made before.. somehow not as effective or strong. Do you still use the same brand? Where do you recommend buying it because my little dog really needs to go out & it's pretty bad when he returns home with a family of ticks latched all over him. He's also very sensitive to any medication .. even the flea and tick wash gets him vomiting all the time :( He's so small. Please help. Thanks
thanks for info. i love using natural oils instead of harmful chemicals. unfortunately, out of all my oils i have, geranium really affects my eyes, make them really red and sore, so im dubious about spraying it anywhere near my face. im wondering if another oil might work as well?? maybe lemongrass or citronella or lavender???
Hi Kelly, ticks are aggressively attacking my small fuzzball in the past week (3-4 nasty bites per day) here in Europe. I am really optimistic about trying your solution.. However, I was only able to obtain witch hazel as a 100% Essential Oil on short notice. Please, how do you recommend diluting this witch hazel properly to use as the 3rd ingredient in your homemade spray recipe?? Many thanks!
+shelleyblossom I think you are right, Shelley - good eye! I think this may be an 8 ounce bottle. It's all I had free at the moment - this recipe didn't even fill half of the bottle so a 4 or 8 ounce bottle will be fine to use! A 4 ounce would probably be a bit better unless you want to double the recipe.
'Eden's Garden' is $34.99 for 10 ml. on Amazon.ca. 'Hana' Rose Geranium oil is $24.99 for 30ml, so less than a 3rd of the price. Do you know if the 'Hana' brand is a good product, or could you recommend any other brands of essential oils that you know to be of good quality? Thanks.
I know I'm 2 yrs late but I use Hana and it seems fine. I place 1 drop at the base of my cats tail, directly on her skin (so she can't lick it off). Hope this helps😊
Thanks-may give it a try. Currently I am using 'Now' lemon eucalyptus and 'Lotus' cedar oils in a 2:1 ratio. Seems to be keeping ticks off my dogs. I am also using Picaridin-a low toxicity bug repellant. If my dogs stay tick free over the next few weeks, then it is working as April is the worst month where I live (east coast Canada.) Once we get into June ticks are not an issue until fall. Mostly black legged ticks in my area.
SO KELLY, WITH THE SPRAY DILUTION IN BOTTLE. DO I SPRAY MY SMALL POMERANIANS (APPROX 15 LBS) WITH THE SPRAY ALL OVER THEIR LEGS, UNDERSIDE, HEAD? INSIDE EARS?(THEY GET TICKS INSIDE THEIR EAR FLAPS) AND WHAT ABOUT AROUND EYES, NOSE, SINCE THEY GET TICK AROUND EYE AREA, ETC.? WILL THEY ALSO GET SICK IF THEY LICK THE SPRAY ON THEIR LEGS, ETC.? THANKS!
I'm going to try on our horses and donkeys. However, I'd need a lot so I don't know if it will be feasible in the long run. I'll buy a gallon of distilled water, remove 2.5 cups from it and add: 600 ml white rum 50 ml geranium rose oil To make one gallon. That's doable but just for use on four locks, manes, and tails.
I am going to try this. I live in PA also, and I have ticks all over me and my dog, deer ticks at that. My dog is treated with a chew that lasts for a month in her system. Xee Vang I find that I have to apply this spray every few hours. Since we are outside for many hours of the day, I've been using 1-2 drops of straight Rose Geranium on my dog (per the advice from my holistic vet) and that will last him all day. So, since (I'm sure) many foreigners with school knowledge of English are looking for tips here too, I think you should also list the ingredients in writing. May someone put it in writing for me? Hi Fernandez. The rest of the ingredients she talked about is, a third cup of distilled water, a tablespoon of vodca, and if you do not want to use vodca than you can use witch hazel. i personally think i will try using apple cider vinegar and citronella oil in it aswell to reppel musquitos while we are at it. Hope this helped have a nice day.
Hi there! My holistic vet recommends it, along with many other reputable sources. I felt good about using it, especially considering the alternatives. My 120lb, 14 year old dog passed away this past summer, but we used it up until he died.
***** Hi Haley! 40 drops for the spray. But when I use the pure rose geranium on my dog, I just 1 or 2 drops undiluted (ok per my vet) on his backend and that lasts him the whole day. You can certainly dilute it, though! Just use 1-2 drops in 1 teaspoon of oil. Diluting it doesn't work as well for my dog & I have to be more diligent about reapplying it more often. But many others have had success with diluting it so it's worth a try if you prefer using it diluted :)
I don't know what kind of ticks you all are dealing with, but the ticks in Massachusetts love the taste of that stuff. Doused my dog in that stuff and made no difference at all, also tried several other kinds of off the shelf repellant from Petco, still nothing works!
Can this work on repelling misquitos AND Can this work on pet rabbits...I keep my rabbits indoors but lately theres been mosquitos .. and as they always groom them selves is this safe as consumed..
Taco Kat We've found the Rose Geranium to be really effective at mosquitos! The only thing it doesn't really help with are those annoying biting flies and gnats. I've found Plant Therapy's Insect Shield (amzn.to/1JXiWs1) a lot more effective for gnats and biting flies. But yes, this spray is great for rabbits, too!
I am about to hopefully get my 3rd dog. I can't wait, life is not the same with out a dog in my life. My first dog, I had when I was a baby, my parents don't remember but it was born on my birthday, they don't know if it was that year or a year later. He was so special, he used to wait at the bus stop, he always knew when it was coming. We used those nasty flea and tick collars back then, basically useless. My Second dog, we used frontline, it work amazing, never saw a tick or flea in the 15 years we had her, but some how she ended up with lyme, so a tick did get to her some how, and she was mostly an indoor dog. My dogs always sleep in my bed with me, and I am petrified of lyme, as I saw what it did to my last dog, we were able to get it under control but it came back with a vengeance. I plan on using that or some other chemical, but I was wondering do you think this would work well in my bed, and do you think it would last a while, or would I have to reapply often. I really have a phobia about it, as I am so sick already, and my next dog, is going to be a service dog to assist me, so this is an all out war on Ticks. Many of my neighbors and there dogs have it too, it is so rampant. Any thoughts?
+Tony Lopez Tony, that is a really great idea about spraying it in your bed. I never thought of doing that and I will now! You would probably have to spray it every night, though. And you are right - life is not the same without a dog :)
Hi Kelly! Really excited to try this! What kind of coverage do you need on children? Do you need to spray their whole body or just in specific areas like legs and arms? Thanks!
Joe Bauman Hey Joe! I would suggest using it just like you would a regular bug spray - all over. A few sprays front to back and you should be good to go!
Hi Kelly. Great simple recipe!! I love hiking and started taking my daughter with me a couple of years ago. I've been looking for a more natural tick repellent because the commercial stuff is just too dangerous to put directly on skin. My only question is, how fragrant is the rose geranium oil? I don't mind my wife and daughter smelling "pretty" but I would prefer not to, haha. Thanks in advance!!
+Doug Thomson hahaha! My husband says he can relate! The Rose Geranium is very fragrant and very flowery. I think it smells lovely, but I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to smell so flowery :) Cedarwood essential oil is known as another effective essential oil that repels ticks and would be a great replacement for the rose geranium. And it smells very manly. Just an FYI - I don't have any personal experience with cedarwood essential oil, but I've heard positive things from others who use it as a tick repellent.
I think lemon balm (or citronella) or Rosemary or Tea tree oil....maybe a little cedar or pine oil...or something in the mint family or bergamot. For ticks and mosquitos & other insects.
Very warm greetings from Ireland Kelly! And many thanks for this great "recipe". We live in North West Ireland where there are many ticks; it's a big problem. Would you or any of the viewers have any guidance on the following: 1. How often do you need to reapply the spray? 2. Is it a good repellant for horseflies and/or midges by any chance? 3. Can it be sprayed on our cats who constantly pick up ticks? Many thanks Kelly and very best wishes, Paul.
Hi Paul! Thanks for watching my video! To answer your questions: 1. As long as the scent is there, it will provide protection - when the scent dissipates, it's time to reapply. For myself, I usually have to apply every few hours (2-4 hours). If I'm out all day, I usually apply it 3 times. 2. We have found that it does have some repelling properties to other insects, too. It generally repels most insects including horseflies. Some other people have added a few drops of lemongrass or citronella essential oil for greater insect protection. While this is a great idea to repel a large amount of other insects, I've personally found that just rose geranium is the most effective for ticks. For some reason, when I added the other oils in, it protected me a bit better from flies, mosquitoes, etc., but it wasn't quite as effective for ticks. Interesting! But others have had success with adding additional oils so I think it's something that you may have to experiment with to see what works best for you. 3. Cats and essential oils can be quite a controversial subject! There's not a ton of research out there and there are some oils that are a definite no for cats. Rose geranium is one of the gentlest essential oils and many holistic vets, including mine, recommend and use rose geranium on cats (and have for decades with success!) for tick protection. @@PrimallyinspiredKelly Kelly, thank you SO MUCH for taking your time to give such a detailed and extremely useful response. Very much appreciated! Here's to a wonderful summer for us all :) Best regards, Paul.
How do you use it on humans? Do you have to spray head to toe? If you just want to use a drop of oil on your wrists, will that be sufficient coverage head to toe? Thank you in advance, Rita
+Baba Ren Hi Rita, We've found just a drop on our wrists is enough if you use it undiluted. You can spray head to toe on humans if you use it as the spray, though.
WARNING I bought this after I heard her dogs were tick free for 3 years. Sorry I think that must be a lie because this did not work. I tried the rose geranium drops on my dogs neck. She still got ticks and I didn't even go in the forest! also I put some on a homeless dog up the road the next day there was a tick right on the spot I put the oil.
Lemongrass and citronella essential oils are well known insect repellents, too. I haven't had quite as much luck with using them for ticks as the rose geranium, but there are some who have reported decent success! Just stay away from tea tree essential oil for your pets.
APPARENTLYaPRINCESS Some of my readers swear that it works for fleas, ticks and mosquitos. Personally, I know it works for us for sure with ticks and mosquitos. We moved into a flea infested house last year and this spray didn't work for them :( But if you weren't dealing with a major flea infestation, I do believe this spray helps to repel fleas. We haven't had flea issues since and we didn't have them before the infestation.
+Kelly from Primally Inspired I seen your article, but the thing is I don't go hiking with my dogs, their just in dirt, and they have ticks, can i still use this, and do i still have to spray it on them monthly or everyday
Thanks so much Kelly, I go to Mexico each year and am eaten alive by mosquitoes. You are a doll, I really appreciate your prompt answer to my question. I ordered my oil and am ready to go with the repellent.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE-THERE are different types of ticks. So getting rid of them may differ. I highly doubt this is for brown dog tick which most of you seem to be talking about. So it doesn't mean her remedy isn't working. I guess you can use it as a guideline to experiment with other natural oils.
Rose essential oil won't work for ticks, but regular geranium essential oil does have tick repelling properties. That's the best substitute if you can't find rose geranium.
I would like to see someone with a dish of ticks and fleas with their miracle stuff placed in that dish for everyone to see how great it is when the ticks and fleas keel-over.
Hi Whitney! This seems to do a pretty good job at repelling fleas (but it doesn't work for a major infestation). We did have a major flea problem a few years ago when we moved into a flea infested house (omg, it was so terrible!!!). I ended up using a homemade flea powder to get rid of it. I wrote about it here: www.primallyinspired.com/homemade-flea-powder-repellent/ And here's all the holistic vet recommended, natural flea options I learned in the process: www.primallyinspired.com/natural-flea-control/ Hope any of that can help you! Take care!

+Kelly from Primally Inspired Hi Kelly ..I just prepared the spray for my dog...Can I use it also for my family? Thanks
bertha k. Yes, it's great for your family, too!
What other essential oil can u use?
I am using lemon eucalyptus and cedar oils mixed 2:1. Seems to be working.
Do you need distilled water or is well water sufficient? I followed the directions but the mixture didnt mix and the essential oil is still not mixing
I am using well water, and it has worked fine for me. Might depend upon the nature of your water-say, lots of minerals or not.
hi kelly so just 1-2 drop on the backend of the dog undilulated daily? thanks again ; )
+Jackie Noone Hi Jackie! That's what I've been doing with my dog for the last 4 years now and it's kept him tick-free!
Does normal lavender work?
Thank you very much for sharing you recipe, God bless you
Hi Kelly, would u mind writing down the ingredients and recipe? Thanks
+Jasmine Lai Hi Jasmine! I made a printable recipe on my blog for you! www.primallyinspired.com/homemade-tick-spray-natural-repellent/
Super! thanks.
Would you or any of the viewers have any guidance on the following:
1. How often do you need to reapply the spray?
2. Is it a good repellant for horseflies and/or midges by any chance?
3. Can it be sprayed on our cats who constantly pick up ticks?
Many thanks Kelly and very best wishes,
Paul.
Hi Paul! Thanks for watching my video! To answer your questions:
But you'll likely find just as many other doctors who say no, never to use essential oils on cats (because of the limited research). Personally, I trust the decades of experience that many holistic vets have with it and would use it if I had a cat. But that's just me! :)
Best wishes to you for a wonderful summer (tick free!!)!
Take care!
Warmly,
Kelly
@@PrimallyinspiredKelly Kelly, thank you SO MUCH for taking your time to give such a detailed and extremely useful response. Very much appreciated!
Here's to a wonderful summer for us all :)
Best regards,
Paul.
Will definitely give this a try this n summer while hanging deer stands. Thanks
Where did you buy your outfit from? It's too cute! 😊❤
Thank you!! :) Stitch Fix!
@@PrimallyinspiredKelly Thank you for letting me know. 😊❤
Love this, Thank you!
How often should I spray this on my dogs?
Hi Kate, this spray must be sprayed when the smell dissipates - generally about every 3 hours.
ok thanks
Thank You💙
If im out all day, and the dog too, how often should i reaply?
Generally every 3 hours.
Cedar Essential Oil is the best. It kills them almost instantly. I use DoTerra, but any certified organic essential oil will work.
You're a a great story teller.
you made me laugh! "Good one" Joshua!
You aren't supposed to just put the oil on the dog you idiot.
Two thumbs up on your video....well done !
Could I use other essential oils
Lemongrass and citronella essential oils are well known insect repellents, too. I haven't had quite as much luck with using them for ticks as the rose geranium, but there are some who have reported decent success! Just stay away from tea tree essential oil for your pets.
Nice
amazing
Does this spray work for fleas too or just ticks?
APPARENTLYaPRINCESS Some of my readers swear that it works for fleas, ticks and mosquitos. Personally, I know it works for us for sure with ticks and mosquitos. We moved into a flea infested house last year and this spray didn't work for them :( But if you weren't dealing with a major flea infestation, I do believe this spray helps to repel fleas. We haven't had flea issues since and we didn't have them before the infestation.
ok, thanks for letting me know.
+Kelly from Primally Inspired I seen your article, but the thing is I don't go hiking with my dogs, their just in dirt, and they have ticks, can i still use this, and do i still have to spray it on them monthly or everyday
Thanks....ticks seem to be on the increase
Thanks so much Kelly, I go to Mexico each year and am eaten alive by mosquitoes.
You are a doll, I really appreciate your prompt answer to my question. I ordered my oil and am ready to go with the repellent.
Oh I love Mexico!! We went there on our honeymoon and are planning to go back for our anniversary next year! Have a great time
Thanks Kelly. We have been going each year for 22 years.
Also take into account what oils are safe or toxic for your dogs
hi Kelly did you say 4 drops of rosa oil or 40
+daryl elmon 40
I’m only finding rose essential oil... will it work?
Rose essential oil won't work for ticks, but regular geranium essential oil does have tick repelling properties. That's the best substitute if you can't find rose geranium.
I would like to see someone with a dish of ticks and fleas with their miracle stuff placed in that dish for everyone to see how great it is when the ticks and fleas keel-over.
can you use this on cats...thanks
+teri c That's what I'm wondering too. Things that are safe for dogs are not necessarily safe for cats.
No! Never use essential oil on cats!
Do you use anything special for fleas?
Take care!
Fantastic -- thank you so much! I'm going to give them a try for both fleas and ticks. I appreciate your help!
Thank you! This is exactly what I need.
You're gorgeous, thanks for the vid.
Did she say 40 drops?
I don't know if can get all your ingridients here in Europe. Can you please send all the ingridient to me please. Thank you.
I can do that for you
Our house is sooo many ticks in are indoor and out door.-..-
is this for tick flea free?
can I use lavender oil ?
Hi Joel, you can try it, as it does have some bug repellent properties, but it's not as effective for ticks as rose geranium.
Tea Tree oil seems like it cluld work. Or Peppermint One drop of peppermint on an attached tick and he'll back out in 1minute.
