I lived in a ground floor apartment with a small patio. I spread fresh cedar chips all around the patio. It looked nice and was quite effective in keeping fleas away.

From my understanding the Diatomaceous Earth powder doesn't suck the moisture out of fleas. What it does is it sticks to the exoskeleton of the fleas and suffocates them (because insects like fleas, ticks, and bed bugs breathe through their exoskeletons). But it still is a safe method of insect treatment. But just the DE powder alone will not eliminate an infestation. You'll also need to treat the animals (ex: flea combing and bathing with a safe wash like Dawn) as well.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this valuable information… I just recently got a recommendation from a nurse friend of mine that Vet’s Beat works great. I have had two gorgeous beloved German shepherds die from large tumors (belly & brain!)and finally got wise to the fact that the pesticide flea & tick chews probably caused them. So I’m determined to take care of my animals with all NATURAL NON TOXIC products

I had been fighting a skin problem on one of my dogs with natural products for 5 years. He finally did so much damage I took him to the vet. Was given Simparica 3/28 , by October he had his first seizure , lost the use of his rear legs, eyes were not registering and he was slamming himself into the wall and the legs of my work bench. It took 4 seizures and 6 months for him to go back to normal. I've fed him everything from kangaroo , fish and now we're on to pork. He gets a flea combing 3x a day with a slathering of sunflower oil. I bought food grade diatomaceous earth , yesterday! So I'm glad to hear you recommend it. Thanks for the information.

Wonderful video!! Be careful with the DE though. As a pool guy I can tell U there's a huge difference between Food-Grade DE and DE for pools; but, one thing they have in common is that they are extremely dangerous to inhale. That said, I will now subscribe to your channel! Blessings!! P.S. Don't sweat it about the length of your video, U covered a lot of helpful information in a reasonable amount of time.

Good thing for home is the flea trap with light.. sticky pads once it's time to replace simply use water with tiny bit of dish soap and not waste money on the replacement sticky pads. Can get the tiny lights even at Dollar store with 3 bulbs. Trying to use the cookie sheet with light over it is asking for pets to get it spilled etc but buying the actual flea trap ONCE u can then have perfect light not having to worry if light and heat is correct distance to draw fleas toward it. Just check each day to be sure it keeps water in it.. I got flea trap for $15 at Home Depot but it's a one time purchase for perfect container for water n soap from then on to add in the tray

I have used wondercide on my pet floorboards and bedding. I find it works well in combination with capstar or fastcaps, both of which have nitenpyram (a chemical, the active ingredient). Nitenpyram kills fleas n ticks on your pet but does by intercut the life cycle. I like it because you can give it as often as once a day and even to puppies, kittens and pregnant dogs n cats. I am 'assuming' it can't be that bad because of this. Very helpful if you're feeling very desperate and do t want to opt for the ultimate poisons. I've tried diatamaceous earth/silica which is made with yarrow by Buck Mountain. Not very effective for my dog which hikes in the deep woods and likes get really dirty. Btw, I was told that if using Nitenpyram, the con is that if your pet does have a bad reaction there is no antidote, but I have used it with no problems so far. Nothing really works, not Vets Best, nor any of the 'naturals' unless combined with effort on your part to recognize this will be a long process over time of cleaning, washing, washing and cleaning over and over and over. It's exhausting. Spray, sprinkle, treat or what have you, your car, all bedding (yours and your bestie's) the corners of your dwelling and anywhere your pet spends time in, such as under that couch or on the kitchen mat where they live to hang out. One thing I have yet to try which worked really well a few years ago was Kleen Green. It's an enzymatic killer which works on the exoskeleton of the insect. Harmless to mammals, it somehow kills insects. I was weeding deep roots with bushes up to my waist, initially having sprayed myself with Kleen Green, and hours later emerged tickless! This product can only be ordered online. Do your research and try it out. I keep planning to get it but haven't yet. Can't wait to see if it works it's wonders again.

thank-you - enjoyed your presentation. I totally agree with "natural methods". Both pet and human need to cover nose when applying - it will help. You can mix salt with DE, and apply. It is safe. Instead of it "blowing in the wind" (dusty), I find mixing it with water, in a spritz bottle, does the trick as well - without harmful breathing issues. It will dry quickly. (oh - a little in water mixed - will help pets internally as well - not muddy, just tsp in 2 cups - mixed? - should be fine. It will settle below. You can stir periodically as you add water daily.) thanks or sharing...

I think this is a good video overall except I wish people would quit saying Demetrius earth is "completely" safe just because it's food grade. It is NOT!!! It is NOT safe to inhale! It's also not good to get in their eyes. Please do your homework thoroughly people. Dogs sniff around on themselves all the time and may even sniff Demetrius earth they find around the house or yard that you put out for pest control. If animals were given the same value as humans there would be people getting sued for saying it is safe to put on them.
BTW, if it's not food grade it can very easily be deadly! Non food grade (like is used for pools for example) should NEVER be eaten or inhaled in any quantity! Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's safe! There are 100's if not 1000's of "natural" things that are bad for us and our pets and in many cases deadly!

Diatomaceous is very fine and dusty-spread it on your rug and it winds up on your ceiling fan blades. Supposedly doesn’t work for long in a humid climate. My advice if you discover you have a flea infestation-don’t waste any time-vacuum all the floors, especially the carpets, throughly and frequently the first two weeks, including the baseboards and in corners. Of course, use your vet’s recommendation for flea control for your pet. She knows what works best in your area of the country.

I've had great success with diatomaceous earth. I mix it with water and spray it where needed. Once dry, it leaves a nice film of the D.E. - this meeting works great for carpet, walls (inside and out), bushes and even the yard. It wakes away with rain, but normal morning dew doesn't seem to affect it. I've also applied it directly to my cats using a very wet washcloth, which worked pretty well. D.E. is very, very safe to eat and in fact has a lot of benefits if you do (kills parasites, detoxes, helps with digestive issues like IBD in cats, and several others). It's cheap and it's arguably the safest method that actually works to get rid of insects (ants, fleas, ticks, spiders, cockroaches, slugs etc, etc)

Also, with cats, good luck with them allowing you to put it on them. We even tried spraying it in our hands to rub it through their fur. No dice there and then they become afraid to let you touch them for a day or so. Don't use lemon grass scented sprays. That's the only one of those we've tried so far.

I just bought a concentrate made by Natural Ginesis a few months ago. I dilute it 1oz concentrate to 7oz water in a spray bottle. Sprayed my dog thoroughly and rubbed it in. Went hiking with him for a few hours. He loves to get really dirty and roll in leaves, so he's your perfect tester. It worked. I found maybe one or two ticks if any. Usually 10+ tick count. This stuff really works. It's supposed for ticks, fleas, Luce, bed bugs, dust mites, mosquitoes. It's non toxic. Not harmful if swallowed (wow). It causes the insects to molt and shed their shell through an enzymatic reaction. It's a bit $$, but totally worth buying something that actually works and doesn't make your dog smell like potpourri. I live in an apartment complex that doesn't spray for fleas and I mix a half bottle of apple cider vinegar and half bottle water together and spray it on my dog before taking her out, making sure to rub it down into her skin. I really kind of soak her in the morning when I first go out and then spritz her again lightly each time I take her out and it keeps the fleas off. She likes the taste of it and it's good for her so she licks it off sometimes. She's a poodle mix so I have to make sure it gets down to her skin. Every so often hopefully we'll get on her when I don't spray her good enough. Cheap natural spray. It works for me.

@@philpattemore7140hi .. I find tea tree oil in dog shampoos. I'd like to know why it's harmful to pets. I don't want to add it to any sprays I make for fleas and ticks. Thanks

Some of these products are worth checking into further, but I tried that Vet's Best with the Peppermint oil only on the living room carpet... it doesn't work for every one. For me, It did NOT smell like Christmas, it smelled HORRIBLE! Such a strong odor that I MYSELF could not breathe! i couldn't let my cats into the room for over a week, even after airing it we could not go in without all of us wheezing... Did some more research...Found out peppermint oil and clove oil are both toxic to cats... and apparently to me too, in that concentration!... not doing that again. I might try it on the lawn this fall. I don't go out there much... definitely checking ingredients before I try anything else though!

The DE works no doubt but ONLY on the spot where it sticks to your pet. It’s really hard to get it on their belly etc and that’s where the fleas will go.

You could mix it with tiny bit coconut oil and rub it deep into their coat.

She's Talking about FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth, not the stuff you get in your garden center for pools. And yes it works. also fresh lemons halved, boiled, squeezed and strained, cooled, then transferred to a spray bottle then sprayed on the carpet then vacuumed after dry. haven't had as good of a result from concentrated lemon juice.

i've come upon your video quite late here as i am just now having flea issues in my yard because of stray cats...i did use the vets best lawn and yard spray before seeing this, and that has helped a lot, so far only third day. i have also vacuumed my house daily, and spray a homemade spray that i made with peppermint oil, clove oil and a little neem oil all over my house daily (i know the vets best has two of those oils). i was, however, wondering, if i could still get the nematodes for the yard and garden, or if the vets best would kill them too? thanks so much for such an informative video using natural and safe products!!!! :)

I use frontline plus on my cat and DE on floor and furniture. I have DE dust everywhere and it is visible. Once a week I vacuum and spray with pets+ vet. I've been doing this almost a year and no results.
please be careful with pets+vet lot of people allergic to it. I wear mask and gloves when I spray it and leave the room for a couple of hours until it drys otherwise my eyes, lips and tongue swells up.

I've used Diamateous Earth on my pets & they scratched more than just from the fleas. So it really must have a drying effect or could it be from the tiny shells in the product?

  • @jenniferpetrellicarslearni2265

Great video but two quick questions. I use diatomaceous earth outside all the time for ants and ticks. Willet diatomaceous earth kill the nematodes? Can I use both at the same time? Forgive me if this is a silly question but will using them lead to a nematode infestation? I'm worried about them getting into the house. Lol. But you said they Perry ground so that doesn't seem likely. I'll always try to think of everything and every possibility. How do you keep the cats from getting any of the diatomaceous earth in their eyes? My cat tends to rub her eyes with her paws a lot when she's grooming. Also I don't really know if Vets Best is good or bad. I read reviews some animals getting sick and dying from the peppermint oil because it is toxic to cats. Other people say it's fantastic and works great for getting rid of fleas. I have a cat so I really don't know I should try it or not. It could be very confusing when I read these mixed reviews. Do you know of a more natural monthly treatment other than advantage? I just started using it on my pad, but very concerned about any long-term effects. Great information! thank you so much!

Putting the DE in their food can make them constipated so watch for that. I have put DE in the fur in places around the neck or back of my cat but not too much and not rubbed into the skin. It can also be sprinkled around baseboards where insects tend to crawl. It cuts through the insect exoskeleton and they die of dehydration.
