It looks really good with the tires sitting outside of the body. I think you’ll run into more problems with trying to get the tires to sit inside the body. You’ll have to raise the frame so high it’ll make the entire ride too top heavy, and prone to tipping.
Also you have sooooo many 4wheel drive vehicles. What about doing an all wheel drive racer with knobby tires…? Something that could ride on dirt, but isn’t specifically “off road”, or a rock crawler.
Love watching you create projects out of raw materials. It gives me inspiration!

Chris, Bondo over that break will crack on you. It's best to use fiberglass and resin to repair those breaks on the inside & outside of the body, then sparingly use Bondo to fill any small imperfections.

I am really tired of all the off-road builds and they are all doing the same thing. You remember when Grand hard first made the pink Mustang. now that was the golden era but now they only make off-road stuff😢.

Yep. Many people think that the bondo with the fiberglass in it, is the same stuff fiberglass bodies are made of but it’s totally different. The bondo is for filler, the one with fibers mixed in can fill a hole or hold it’s shape around a corner better but it’s not good for structurally repairing fiberglass/resin body panels.

    • @FuelandFood

That car looks like an 80s Monte Carlo in the front. It's probably a mix of a few different makes and models.
Tire beading tips: If you have a valve stem core tool, you can get more air flow by pulling them out. Also 50psi isn't very much. Read the sidewall and find what that max pressure is, you can go above that to bead a tire, just not safe to operate above that. 80-100 psi to bead tires with stiff sidewalls is common. Only other option would be to invest in a bead blaster, they are fun lol.

    Dodge aspin/charger rt from 77-78.
We built a nascar body gokart and had similar restraints. Even though ours wasn't a monster truck the front end would still work. We had are frame 14 inches wide to the front. The shock towers we made hoops that bent from the frame to the top of the bodies wheel arch. It also came to the outer wheel well from the frame. Think it was a 35 degree angle. That allowed us a place to put the shocks and the upper A arm. We tied both shock towers together. Kinda unorthodox but it worked great. And we beat the heck out of that cart. Jumping, bouncing on ruff pot holed roads. We powered ours with a 340 old snow mobile engine with electric start. From that we built a ninja powered gokart. Kinda screwed that one up as it wouldn't do anything but spin the small tires. We did have better luck with roto tiller wheels off road. 14 inch tires aggressive tractor style tire pattern.

It seems most of the comments are saying keep it more like a race car with smaller wheels and street tires. It would be something different that will test your skills in a different direction. Front engine, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. 4 stroke, 2 or 4 cylinder engine. You can always build a 4WD monster truck later...
And it is a Dodge Aspen R/T. I had one years ago with a 318 and 4 speed manual tranny. Was a blast to drive...

Put a ratchet strap around the tire's circumference and set it pretty snug. Fill with air - it'll push the beads out towards the seat so it pops up and on.
If you don't have a ratchet strap, in a pinch you can tie a rope around the circumference and put a pry-bar through and twist it like you would do for a tourniquet. I've put on a few mini-bike wheels this way!

  • @bryduhbikeguy
    @bryduhbikeguy 3 месяца назад

I want to say, the "Dodge Aspen R/T" is a kewl option to choose. The 'R/T' came in Black with multi-color accent stripes, or orangish-red with black accents.
"Duraglas" body filler is fiberglass fiber impregnated resin that bonds better and stronger. When you cut the front wheel arches, use the pieces to fill the front of the rear wells.

You're making a monster car, muscle cars typically don't have 4wd, and not a ton of ground clearance either. Some of those small highway rated trailer tires, like the 30$ ones at surplus warehouse, would make life far easier regarding the front fabrication. it's up to you on the direction, but what I see at 22:23 in the video is a wild monster car, not a muscle car. Oh, surplus warehouse also has bearings and weld on axle stubs for those wheels, as well as a bunch of pully's and chain and sprockets.

The Mini Duster, the name already sounds like a sick mini AWD dirt racer. Open diff in the front and locking in the back and ultrawide suspension arms would be awesome. At mini size, you'd have a very hard time trying to keep the wheels in the body, so instead if the wheels are to stay inside you'd have to make it road or smooth dirt only, perhaps RWD since the suspension being more inside would reduce the front space enough to make a front diff not an option. The center diff should be able to lock up so if a front starts spinning it doesn't lose power to the rear, but this could be epic. The Mini Duster, since the body is a Plymouth Duster, the last blast of the Duster specifically in the form of the Plymouth Volare which lasted 4 years before it got replaced by a range of cars significantly uglier in that awkward in-between year when aerodynamics were being introduced for gas mileage in the 1980s during the -artificial- Oil Crisis.

My suggestion would be to find yourself a older Open class motocross engine, like a CR/YZ/KX/RM 400-500cc. They have tons of torque, and tons of aftermarket parts available depending what brand you choose. Another transmission built in for more gearing range might be useful as well. Singles are much easier to jet and tune, so don't let the snowmobile engine hassles put you off of two strokes! The power and torque are worth the effort! EDIT: Never mind. Lol. Didn't realize you were using a belt trans. My engine suggestion was for chain drive.

3 things. 1 make a tub for it and make it so when you sit in it your head it roughly in the head space in the body. 2 needs head lights in the headlight places. 3 needs a grill. On number one my reasoning is that the Mini VW was too small and cramped. If you make a tub for this that adds some depth; I think it will make it more friendly for foot room. Also, allows for the body trim to look like a body trim and with the larger wheel wells it should look good, I think. 4ish inches I think would be deep enough. Maybe 6 after seeing that transmission. Also with this plan your head is in the roll cage rather than outside. So, by the end of the video, I was thinking it would look cool and kinda silly with 3 inch fender flares, about 12 inches of lift, and a set of nerf bars/side steps. Like someone took their old American muscle boat car and made a rock crawler or off-road racer out of it.

IMO a lower revving engine might be ideal for a build like this, being 4WD - I think that would make the clutch and exhaust components a bit more simple to fabricate and install, just more simplistic all the way around - cooling, gearing, etc.

  • @musicauthority674

It definitely looks like a Volare. and I can see your point about using something. like a Blazer, or Ram charger, or Bronco body. but this should fit your needs really good. and you already had this body on hand. and the money saved on a body. can be on the running gear.
I just watched a GHPC video yesterday. and they have a golf cart with a Yamaha R1 street bike engine in it. and it pumps out 180 HP. and an additional benefit is the gearbox is part of the engine. but you would still have to use an auxiliary gearbox for reverse? however that engine is liquid cooled. Ethan did quite a bit of work on it to get the suspension and steering geometry right. so it would handle better but because he forgot a bolt in the steering linkage. the linkage came apart and he lost control of it and hit a tree. luckily he didn't get hurt. and there are other options if you can find one. like a Kawasaki KZ1000 if you want it to be air cooled. and you don't have the issues with computerized engine management. a couple options to consider.

It's also not uncommon to go to the 80psi+ range to seat tires. It's not particularly dangerous until that 80psi point anyways

love your builds man but try auto part stores like I know O'Reilly's has valve steams and a valve steam puller to install them and you can wrap a cargo strap around the tire and tighten the strap before putting air in it. It looks like a Montie Carlo.

Looking forward to seeing how this ends up. Really hoping that other than where you've had to change the body to fit the wheels you don't have to alter it in any other ways. Need to keep all the mechanics etc inside the body this time so it looks clean. Glad you're doing 4wld should be fun to drive. Please make sure you do something regarding safety though this time, say a removable roll frame that you can fit when you'll be doing something that you could possibly roll the car.

I vote for a predator v-twin! Not another xlt that will require a huge radiator and a goofy expansion poking out averywhere. (Even tho you nailed on the baja one👍🏼)

NO! We got him away from those things and working with real engines. Don’t ruin that. If you want predator engines, Cars and Cameras and Red Beard are more your style. Don’t ruin this channel with more of that boring stuff.

some type of sv650 v-twin or even ls650 style would be cool and sound good on a glasspack muffler

Set it up like they do with the mini monster trucks,, NOT with your HEAD STICKING OUT,,, JUST RAISE THE BODY HIGHER UP ON THE FRAME,,,so your head not sticking OUT

Was thinking exactly the same! Would look awesome, have good suspension travel, and be WAY SAFER! Would still have a good centre of gravity as well.

If your struggling to bead the tyres, boil the kettle and pour it on the tyre slowly where it won't bead, the rubber will soften and increase the pressure slightly then it will probably bead 👍

The fiberglass body filler is great for repairs, would suggest laying a new layer internally with maybe some rods to reinforce areas..

IMO it would be cool to have the engine sticking out the hood, with a big scoop. But I guess the drivetrain layout won't allow that.

  • @dylanhobbs372

For the engine, you could use a high rev motorcycle engine but gut the transmission and use the basket to make an adapter for the cvt. It would be like you did for the last electric dirt bike but reversed. A lot of work that may pay off in the end

1979 Plymouth Volare Road Runner. The spoiler is a dead giveaway. They only produced around 400 Road Runners in 1979. All had a slant 6, 2 barrel carb.
