Several DECADES of progress and development for Mercedes Benz to turn their two-seater sports car into a very driveable and (almost) practical sporty little roadster, only for you to spend countless hours undoing it all. And what a fabulous result, I love it! 😍
Having built, and worked on multiple kit cars back in the late 80's and the 90's, I have great admiration for your efforts on this build. I loved working with fibreglass, and even sold products I made at the kit car shows.
Thoroughly impressed, especially with the wheel fitment during the air suspension clip. One of the best builds I have ever seen and cant wait for the rest of the footage!
Some executive engineer must have this kind of hack job in his mind when they designed this SLK... "Just make sure that the wheel base is same as in the gullwing and the engine fits below gullwings silhouette!" :D
I know, i know, i know Benz wouldn't let you resell the body mold you made, but hear me out... what if you added a subscription to your site that happens to have the diy plans and kits for sale that is for research only. You could sell it as replacement parts and not a whole body. That night get you around the legal whole? Maybe....?
Technically, unless there is a trademark on the shape, he could sell reproduction bodies. Can’t use “Mercedes” or maybe “Gullwing”, shapes are generally fair game. Almost certainly no money in however as not exactly DIY friendly
You should produce the body kits and sell them. However, I have read where MBenz corp came down hard years ago on a US company that was producing them. Maybe MBenz lighted up since then. Nice build mate.
I don't think that's going to happen. Just two years ago, Mercedes and various customers sued Europe's largest and world-renowned 300 SL restorer into insolvency and bought it up. This company completely dismantled original customer 300 SLs that were there for repair and restoration and then largely reassembled them using either non-original parts or parts from other 300SLs with different and inappropriate production numbers in order to build another “new” 300 SL from the stolen parts, which were then sold as originals. This caused enormous damage in the collectors' world, because nobody can say how many original 300 SLs were ruined as a result. Since then at the latest, Mercedes no longer wants to support anything in the direction of replicas and imitations.
Great work, one of my favorite cars! Also pro tip with fiberglass, use a heat gun or torch to bend/mold it back in place. That way you don't have to cut and reapply. People do this with body kits and such.
Wow what a year that has been - Thanks Andi - Alex - All the laughs, up's & down's it's been fantastic - best wishes to the "notjustcampers" family, looking forward to been on the 2025 journey with you all
Brilliant. My admiration knows no bounds. I would love a gullwing. Small things like too old for bog projects and not having a body able to get in and out. Obviously, I can’t tell how all the body parts sound (that lovely solid clunk) but have no reason to doubt that you will ensure it sounds as good as it looks.
This is such a stunning build. I'm always surprised why folks who spend so much time, skill and money building these incredible cars, but don't put them through the correct BIVA test so they are truly road legal.
Cool using the decent wngined one too as a base. Wondering how ypu didnt warp the chassis by removing anything but not bracing temporarily? Great job btw
Very nicely done . I bet you feel great cruzein in this Peice of Automotive Art !!! I particularly love that colour ... I think it actually looks nicer than the iconic silver . Beautiful interior work also from what I can see... Top job guys !!!! That's a very , very , very desirable vehicle ... I bet you could park this next to a Lamborghini and people would be more interested in this than the actual real Lamborghini . Thank you for your time and effort to provide us with this content 👍 love it ♥️ . Happy new year from me Way Down Under in New Zealand .
What an amazing project. Congratulations! A honest curiosity question from a person who understands nothing except watching these videos: wound't it be better to strip the entire car to the chassis and start from there?
You knew someone with a 300 SL that was disassembled and they let you take molds off it? And it just happened to fit right on a modern Mercedes??? Hmmm. Either way, great work.
Hello Guys. I saw your video and I can give you a good thing. Take "Sondermessing" to form your special round thinks. Please translate it in english. It is a metal who Rolls Royce take in the 20 /30th to work on difficoult thing on chassis. You can Heat it, form and then cold it. You don`t have a corner. I know this from Mr. Vonier..RR Museum in Dornbirn/Austria. I was there as a member and He tell me about the great , ..in german.. "Sondermessing" It is a specialy "Legierung" from Bras. Best Gregor from Germany.
Did you make a video of how you took the moulding? That would be really interesting to watch.. super story too… like to see this car, and Matt you some time.
@andirt4 I just found it advertised at £129.995, body work hard to tell from photos, and a closer inspection, as to actual condition, and interior is gorgeous.
Great job and car, well done, two questions, was the wheelbase identical and what about structural rigidity, yes you put a roll cage in but is it as stiff as the original?
It’s on air ride suspension that’s more comfortable and I can adjust it up and down to were I like, the wheels were specially made to look like a representation of old merc wheels and to add my style
superb, but I wouldn't like to find myself in it with an accident! with the bits of metal in the fiber and the hidden hoop not made in accordance with safety regulations ;) Otherwise magnificent
I want to do this way s2000, but a purely mum and a baby on the way sadly it's not going to happen unless someone wants to help or do it for me😂 any ideas, I was thinking cobra or 250 something old that underneath was one of maby the best car ever, the fact I can afford to run drive it as a dally is one of most overlooked brilliant things about the honda s2000.
The Car’s Beautiful but it doesn’t look complete, because you’re missing the Mercedes badges front & rear. Are you sure intending on adding the badges??
How the wheelbase is spot on too!! Nice!

Great compilation. It’s easy to forget just how much work went into the finished car 👍🏻
Thank you! 👍
Great video, didn't watch the gull wing build as I came along to see the T5/RS engine transplant so this is a great video for me
All the best for 2025
Having built, and worked on multiple kit cars back in the late 80's and the 90's, I have great admiration for your efforts on this build. I loved working with fibreglass, and even sold products I made at the kit car shows.
Wow, thank you!
what an unbelievable achievement ! I love the ambition and vision of turning the SLK into the iconic Gullwing. I cant wait to see the next video.
The engineers could only dream of that modern running gear in 1955! Bravo!
Thoroughly impressed, especially with the wheel fitment during the air suspension clip. One of the best builds I have ever seen and cant wait for the rest of the footage!

There is one site from which you can buy buck files to make your own mold Called kitcarik
Technically, unless there is a trademark on the shape, he could sell reproduction bodies. Can’t use “Mercedes” or maybe “Gullwing”, shapes are generally fair game. Almost certainly no money in however as not exactly DIY friendly
There’s no way a guy with a real SL let them take a mold. Zero chance. This body is from the same guys who do them for S Klub LA.
@@Earlysport legit thought the same thing lol
I know kit cars aren't a solid business, but man I would love to do the same thing or put the body on an electric coupe frame
Absolutely great watch! Outstanding work
Thank you kindly!
Amazing work. Probably a lot nicer to drive than the real deal too. Hats off to you and a big thumbs-up for having the vision and skill to do this.
I’m always amazed at guys like you who can create these masterpieces.
shout out to your mate Alex, amazing guy! And congrats to your incredible achievement. Awesome car!
Legend!

Smashing recap. Watched every episode.
Thanks for your support
Did he really just happened to have a friend w/a disassembled 300 SL who let him take molds off it & it fit right on a modern MB???
Maybe or he just ordered it from s Klub LA...@@UberLummox
As did I. Brilliant 👍🏻
Brilliant. Loved that especially the thought process and solution finding as you went along. Looking good so far. 👍
I am impressed beyond words. Great work!
Thank you very much!
Amazing craftsmanship. 👏 This takes a lot of dedication and talent
Wow.. thats an efford.. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT i would say.. looks amazing.. !!
Great work, one of my favorite cars! Also pro tip with fiberglass, use a heat gun or torch to bend/mold it back in place. That way you don't have to cut and reapply. People do this with body kits and such.

Wow that was amazing to watch 😊
One of my favourite builds on YT. Glad it turned out so well. Only thing missing was a remote boot release for key recovery 🤣🤣
Thanks for reminding me 😂
Beautiful work

This transformation is witchcraft and i wont be convinced otherwise. Great job!
This is such a stunning build. I'm always surprised why folks who spend so much time, skill and money building these incredible cars, but don't put them through the correct BIVA test so they are truly road legal.

Nice job
Looking good 👍
Thanks 👍
Awesome build, well done guys 🙌
This is very similar to what
S-KLUB LA does. I wonder if they sourced the molds from the same place. Either way beautiful work!
He said very early on that this was a mould he made from someone's 300SL.
Interesting project
Awsome job love it.
Amazing work ! 👍✌️
What a stunning car.
That is a very cool build. Any chance I could get a fiberglass body so I can do the same only in Australia?
WOW😱WOW😱WOW😱AMAZING😱WELL DONE AGAIN❤️👍💪
Cool using the decent wngined one too as a base. Wondering how ypu didnt warp the chassis by removing anything but not bracing temporarily?
Great job btw

Thanks Rob it certainly causes a stir when I take it to the local cars and coffee meets
Lovely job, and an excellent use of an R170. Lovely cars trapped in underwhelming bodywork.
That is a beaut of a car!! Please say you made more than one body kit……. 🤝
Nope sorry
This is amazing
We owned a Gull Wing Riley, a one off built by a ex Ferrari body builder after WW2. Miss that car.
7:04 gorgeous

This is so easy to do and so cheap to do I think I want to make a dealership 300 sl
It's full coming to this after watch Rich Rebuilds hellcat minivan
Did you make a video of how you took the moulding? That would be really interesting to watch.. super story too… like to see this car, and Matt you some time.
No we didn’t have time
I had to check:
300 SL and the SLK have indeed the exact same wheelbase.
You can get dies to bend square tubing?
I'm in Rutland, a guy in Stamford has one for sale, in white with SLK running gear. I've not seen it, but a friend has and said it's stunning.
It’s not the proportions look all wrong and it’s a very poor quality body
@andirt4 I just found it advertised at £129.995, body work hard to tell from photos, and a closer inspection, as to actual condition, and interior is gorgeous.
Look at the photo from the rear it looks horrible and droopy think I put a post on my instagram about it
You could make those and make a pretty good living,if you could get by the legal woe's.😅 but at least you have yours.love it,😊
Sorry this is amazing
Great job and car, well done, two questions, was the wheelbase identical and what about structural rigidity, yes you put a roll cage in but is it as stiff as the original?
Yes and yes, it’s way stiffer with no scuttle shake
@@andirt4 Aweome
Next upgrade, turn the FRP body into carbon fiber. 😂 Nice build!
Would love to
When you shape the metal for the massive curve with the lift, the lift pole is bendng...I will quess its original factory number is PL-4.0** ;)
Big Respekt for all that Work!
But why this Wheels and why so low ?
It’s on air ride suspension that’s more comfortable and I can adjust it up and down to were I like, the wheels were specially made to look like a representation of old merc wheels and to add my style
Subscribed! Thanks for taking the time to put this vid together. I am learning and hoping to tackle the same project the end of next year.
Is there a name and paint code for that color ? It’s beautiful !!!
You were already in Europe m8, the UK is part of the European plate, hahaha 😆.
Nice German car, btw 👍
Yeahhhhh so beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Magnifique 🥇
Theres no better wheels you could have put on that car, both classic and modern, perfect!
Stuff dreams are made of this, if only i had the time, skill and money to do it myself!
why you dont use propper fabric glas ?
superb, but I wouldn't like to find myself in it with an accident! with the bits of metal in the fiber and the hidden hoop not made in accordance with safety regulations ;) Otherwise magnificent
That crack at the end.. be more carefull.. bro.. you rushin it..

Are you not doing any vids on project 2 the customer Audi 100
Yes we will be
Great Stuff, Love your projects, do you have any vids on your black Audi ?
Where did you buy the kit from?
Can't say.
Where i can get same body kit 🤔😅
The Car’s Beautiful but it doesn’t look complete, because you’re missing the Mercedes badges front & rear. Are you sure intending on adding the badges??
Nope, don’t like badges prefer to keep things looking clean
Wooooooooow 😎😎😎👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥
Always funny seeing people sitting on the wrong side of a car.
You should sell those bodies, you'll make a fortune 👍
If only. I was healthy enough to work again.
