Test Riding My Dream Bike! - Hypermotard SP

  • Опубликовано: 28 авг 2019
  • Hey all!
The day finally came! I popped down to Ducati Manchester to test ride the Hypermotard 950SP. I only had the bike for a couple of hours and a lot of that was spent filtering through traffic (being a bank holiday weekend!) so this video may seem a little vague but I did what I could and it was planned the day before!
Best getting putting the lottery on..
Sorry my speaking audio isn't clear at all. I tried to improve my mic audio by adding one of those fluffy things but it actually just muffled the audio and made it sound worse so that's a lesson learnt!
Thanks to Mike at Ducati Manchester for making my ride possible! :)
On boards filmed with Gopro Hero 4.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

I agree the Duke is a fantastic looking bike and, per your comments, great to ride. However…..don’t give up on the MT09 SP. This bike has hidden charms if you are prepared to dial in the suspension. I have owned one since last November and have done 10,000 miles on it. In that time I have spent a lot of time adjusting the suspension and have arrived at the point where I am truly confident in its performance.
You do not need to reshim/revalve the forks or shock, these are quality units, the standard settings have been set by an engineer who has probably done 6 laps of a track without any regard to UK roads in the real world. Adjustments are easy, the only real manual work is (A) taking out the shock and manually adjusting the preload so you can use the full extent of the hydraulic preload adjuster and (B) changing the rake by moving the forks. Everything else is done via the normal external adjusters and some of these adjustments are quite significant. I am a couple of pounds over 10 stone and probably deemed a lightweight for a bike riding bloke, so I was experiencing an uncomfortable ride.
You are not going to get a plush, armchair ride, if you want that, you may need to buy an adventure bike. The Yam has a sports suspension and responds to adjustments quite dramatically, even change in outside temperatures once they get down to single figures produces a slightly different feedback. I have owned and ridden litre sports bikes for the past 12 years and thought I would be well prepared for the MT09. Wrong….I had to recalibrate my brain (and sort the suspension) before I got the best from this bike. You would forgive it’s minor foibles just for the performance of that engine !!
I have rambled on a bit, and not about your “dream ride” Duke. But the difference in price is 5 grand. Is that difference justified in performance/quality gains or does it become a subjective choice based on the badge. But there again it is your dream bike so there may be no contest!
Chaz, just a suggestion, but if you are still riding on standard settings, change them to suit your riding style and weight, use a bike tuning shop to help you (although I suspect you are competent enough having seen your videos on fitting extras to your MT09).
As an added note, purchase an official Yam fly screen, it will add an extra 20mph before you start experiencing uncomfortable naked bike wind blasts.
Just to finalise, I still have my Fireblade and consider it to still be a beautiful bike, but it hardly sees the light of day now, I just keep jumping on that badass Yam!!
Keep blogging, I look forward to your videos.

I know I need to go and get it set up for me I've been meaning to but just havent as of yet. It works fine for me standard on track though so I'm ideally I need to find a good middle ground for track and road. My main gripe is the throttle but I do love it and yes the costs! The maintenance of my MT costs me nothing because my boyfriend works for Yamaha which is why even though I love the Italian bikes I've never committed to one! I do still love the Hyper though and do hope to one day own one just when I'm a bit better off on money.

Old comment but in my opinion there’s nothing about the performance that you’re paying for when you want a hyper, you want the experience. Unbelievable amounts of power in a way too light dirtbike feeling motorcycle.
The hyper doesn’t do anything on a track, road, touring, or trail that any other bike can’t do better. But what it does is make you have more of a blast than anything else on the road while doing it

Ooooh I'm in heaven love that Duc shop! But you really need to find some corners. If you ain't at 45* plus lean angles, weaving up a mountain road , you not where Ducs shine. Nice video!

we older guys lived for decades with basic or no fuel gauges, ignore, forget, it is fine, the human mind looks after it. Yellow light = get fuel at next available opportunity but no rush, you have 40 miles of hard riding in the mean time (most likely), end of story. I have a fuel gauge in my street triple 675, 2 bars remaining = yellow light = 40 miles approx. I have gone 10 miles past 'zero miles' remaining on gauge without issue. Just forget the fuel gauge and ride the thing.

    • @robrogers8909
      @robrogers8909 5 лет назад +1

Exactly this! Motorcycles don't need fuel gauges. In fact, the experience is more beautiful and raw without one. Slosh, eyeball, estimate via ODO, 'know'... and of course, the fuel light will tell you when to pull in anyway. Love my '04 R1!

That’s my local dealership 😊 I’ve got a 950 and love it. I took an SP out and the base model. The base performed better on the road, it’s def the better option. I managed to get an Ex demo with termis and the DQS fitted. It’s probably one of the few exceptions where Ducati’s are concerned but if you do want one don’t rule the base model out at all. It’s just as quick and I think you’ll probably be faster on it than the SP due to better weight transfer, gives you a lot more feel and confidence to push harder. Good luck, hope you get your dream bike 👍

I've got the MT09-SP too. Don't think it handles badly as such. Just not as much confidence in the front as other bikes. I test rode a Ducati Supersport S at the weekend. Much more planted. And like you said, the brakes are good! Bit too noisy for my liking though!

Great to see a real splitter. Can't stand watching clips on here and seeing guys and girls on motorbikes sit behind traffic. Ex Aussie motorcycle courier here. And I own one. Little old now, but still a hoot. 821 sp 2013. I would definitely trade it in for the standard. After owning an sp, six grand difference in Australia is a huge asking asking price and I think just not that worth it. The marzocchis work fine for the road ( only really dive when heavy on the brakes and sitting foward ) and the standard wheels would do me fine. I would test ride the standard and see if I could tell the difference between the sp wheels. Glad you enjoyed your day out on your dream home. Check out the bimotta db 10. My dream bike.

Hi Chaz, if you feel your MT09 feels like it doesn't want to turn as nimbly as the Ducati, it might be worth looking at your tyre choice again. I changed the original Bridgestone S20 on my XSR900 to Continental Road Attack 3 and it was a revelation. It turns much easier, is much more "flickable" and feels a lot more stable during long turns. Just an idea... I know dream bikes tend tobe irresistible :) Anyway love to see more new videos by you.

Chaz like the little eyebrow slice. How do you keep that make up from smudging when you have your helmet on haha?. Bike looks great it reminds me of the apprila Tuono.

I've ridden the hypermotard and I found it too narrow for me , it's very focused only really one purpose . Try the ktm 990 smt , that's the bike I own and have done 5k miles on . Much better engine much more comfortable. . I think cheaper or same money . You will love it . Great video and glad you enjoyed the Ducati :)

But that bike was done like 7 years ago now? Had one myself. Great bike. What did you think the 990 motor was better than the 950 Ducati motor? About the exact same power. Which I guess is saying KTM had this level and type of bike down in 2011....$14,000 back then.

Not compared to the hyper it isnt! The MT07 was probably more nimble.
