  • I got a Baofeng UV-17R radio, a new model in 2023, and today I got through the menus and show the features of the radio. THEN we take the TinySA from Seesii and test the radio for spurious emissions.

    I have one I keep on my nightstand for weather related situations and the light on the bottom is why I went with this instead of a UV5R. I like it, it puts out closer to 7 watts on the meter and although it's not advertised as a Tri-Band, it's a Tri Band.

    I just received a pair of UV-17’s that I ordered from Amazon. Listed as “Ham Radio Upgrade of baofeng UV-5R Two Way Radio Long Range UV-17R Walkie Talkies”.
    They both came with two different length antennas (one about 10” and one about 16” long. The longer antenna says ABBREE on them).
    They came with drop in chargers, USB charging cables, headphones, belt clips, lanyards, and an English only instruction manual.
    I used CHIRP and UV-17Pro setting to program radios with VHF and UHF receivers. I also programmed GMRS channels and I could transmit and receive on GMRS Channel.

    I also just happened to buy a UV-17R and it arrived today so the timing of your video was perfect for me. My -17R is exactly like yours, no USB-C. For anyone wondering, Chirp works on this radio using the UV-17Pro menu option. Mine connected right away on it.

    Got mine on Amazon about two months ago and got 2 antennas (long and short) but no USB charging and in Black. Originally CHIRP didn't support, but it looks like someone else in the comments says it is now. Mine is program all in frequency only and I wrote down all the channels who they belong to. May have to head over to CHIRP and reprogram. Right now I'm having too much fun learning APRS on my FT5. Just dont tell Mike, lol...😁 73's and CHEERS!

    Hello fellow Baofeng Beta tester! I received a UV-17R from Amazon late November/early December. My BL-17UV battery does not have a USB-C connector, and I somehow managed to get my unit into some kind of a flashlight mode on power-up, so I have been unable to reset the unit. I am leaving the unit unplugged from the battery to see if I can somehow get it into a factory default state. I may order a second unit in a few weeks, but I still have a couple of UV-82 units. 73 de n0km

    Hey
    Your video just appeared on youtube now.
    Not sure why videos dont appear earlier.
    Annyway, I have the same radio just in a different casing - UV18 Pro.
    I like the UV-18 casing more.
    The screen and menu on mine is exactly the same.
    Its weird how the same radio gets cased differently but its the same radio.
    Mine has the USB C port on the battery which is very convenient.
    You havent perhaps done an off-camera tx power test?
    Would be interesting to know the tx power for these.

    Going to throw this out there too: tried to program it with my typical, tried-and-true programming cable and CHIRP. No dice. Long story short: the CHIRP UV-17 profile doesn't seem to work but UV-17Pro does. Also, the plug didnt want to seat all the way, so I had to carefully shave away some of the plastic on my adapter with an exacto knife to get it to seat properly.

    I've heard a couple other YT folks say that another reason the high harmonics are bad is because the total Watt output is being divided between them, which I interpret to mean if the 1st and 2nd are are pretty close then the you're say 5W are being split and you're not really getting the 5W output on the 1st because a good portion of those Watts are being spent throwing out the higher harmonics. Would you say this is accurate?

    with Baofeng it is hit or miss if dirty. The newer UV-5R ones I tested are much better and most pass now, all you have to do with that one with out USB C is get a extra battery with the USB C charge port on it. better flash light . their is a water prof version of that. when dropped in water the lights flash red and radio floats. the outher way to use that radio is on UHF TX. their is a GMRS version of that as well. nice a better antenna comes with it. the old UV-5R stock antenna makes a better coffee stir stick. love the color display . the new UV-5R plus has a color display and bigger . different battery then the old UV-5R .nice Tiny SA . great to test radios . now if I buy one my test may be different. Baofeng is like that. now if you get a outher attenuator and put it inline you can test higher power radios. around $30 . great deal . but a $50 band pass filter to clean it up ? 73's

    Interesting result given what Jason found with his UV-5Rs when testing the TinySA a while ago. Clearly they can keep their spurious emissions under control. Unfortunately, Baofeng appears to be willing to sacrifice clean operation for the marginal cost savings they keep by not staying legal. Do we have vendors we can buy from who are more particular and more able to hold their feet to the fire? Is anyone tracking where we can buy Baofengs which tend to be clean?

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  8 месяцев назад

      I think the quality control is so poor that you have a 50/50 chance of getting a clean one.

    • @bigfootape
      @bigfootape 8 месяцев назад

      @HamRadio2 Maybe, although it's not a QC problem if they're deliberately omitting parts or substituting failed/recycled components from the shady end of Huaqiangbei. Manufacturers in China have followed this cost reduction formula with computer hardware for some time, but it also allows assembly lines to scale up the quality of a basic design for more demanding customers by building them according to spec. Reinforcing this is how UV-5Rs are built with heavy use of pick and place components, reflow soldering, and other modern tech which tends to deliver much more consistent assembly.
      Baofengs definitely have a lot of unavoidable technical problems which would need a lot of engineering to fix. The UV-5R intrinsically has problems with frequency drift and adjacent signal de-sense, but the basic design clearly can run clean. It'd be great to clear some of the smoke so people dipping their toes in budget FM HTs can have confidence they're following the regs even if the radio is otherwise quite mediocre.

      Police and emergency departments use P25 digital coms quite heavily. Even if they're unencrypted, these are analog radios and won't work in those modes. Apparently USFS/BLM still use analog for fire ground attack, but others will know for sure.

    Unless I saw that all wrong you tested it wrong. Or more accurately you tested it right and misinterpreted the results.
    You appeared to call the fundamental frequency the first harmonic. The first harmonic is the first multiple that is not the fundamental. So what you called second is actually the first. This should make a big difference in the results of the test.

    Baofeng 5RM …same same appears. Though 5RM hands down comparing to rest of line up. That aside, Baofeng/China is just dumping as many radios as possible on US shores. All different names and flavor; all the same.

    Were you trying to say Boof-wang? And these "fengs" can have all the FCC stickers the chinese hack manufacturers want to slap on them, and they aren't FCC approved.

    I would not recommend this radio or any other radio that fails to meet FCC regulations....period! Your review is valid...the radio did not meet standards. If someone wants to use this radio as a backpack emergency radio, I guess fine, but I would not recommend this radio as a good start for an entry level operator. After your review recommend a handful of HT's closest to the Baofeng price range that does in fact meet the standard. Let's not encourage poor operating practice just to save a few dollars to get someone on the air..

      I already have a few videos on this channel that are recommendations for HT radios in a wide price range.
      I've not tested very many radios in the Baofeng price range but sadly, most of them would probably fail this test.

    Baofeng radios are all the same just different shapes. Junk...why do people continue to review them ? Results are identical. It's all redundant.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  8 месяцев назад +1

      No they aren't all the same, but the reason people keep reviewing them is because watchers, like you, continue to watch the video.
