    I feel like "gourmet burger" at restaurants today are like £15 for a relatively decent burger, 6 fries and a small, raw slaw of some kind in a single frond of lettuce. Double points if it arrives on a cutting board, with a newspaper bag of chips shoved in to a metal container of some kind. That's what you're paying for these days - they didn't buy plates.

    The thing I like about this series is that I can pick which elements to make from scratch for my own money-saving efforts. Like, I might make a big batch of buns and keep them in the freezer, but I’m much more likely to just buy them. I’m very likely to make my own soda, since I hate lugging home soda from the store and have a Sodastream. I already grind my own burger mix, so I’m very likely to do smash patties this way and really need to get a burger smasher thing like that. I would need to try making the tots once to tell how much better they are than frying some frozen ones. But, the spirit of the series really drives home how expensive/poopy fast food can be and how I can afford to cook at home, as long as I’m careful not to over-buy/waste and feel up to it.

    I know some would argue that these would work for them, but a good amount of the time these videos don’t take into account actually buying the base ingredients. With food prices how they are right now, it’s hard to actually do stuff like this. Trying to figure out how to feed 4 people on $67 for ingredients for a week (just around $9ish a day) is difficult.

      Just because Josh doesn't have a day job he can lay in bed until noon and then spend the next 10 hours tinkering in the kitchen. Meanwhile, for people who live in the real world there's barely enough time to put a Pop Tart in the toaster. 😂

      Working a day job and cooking can go hand and hand. You just have to be creative and actually make time for it lol. Crockpots are a way to incorporate cooking into a busy schedule and meal prepping on an off day would be great as well unless you work 7 days a week 24 hours a day lol.

    How do you guys do deep frying for cheap? When I do this I had to buy like $20 CAD for oil that I can stretch to 2 cookings, so that’s basically $10 per serving.

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 Год назад +1

      Oil is reusable, I've used the same oil for at least 4 or 5 things and of course it takes longer, but a smaller pot helps too.

    • @cherie7100
      @cherie7100 Год назад +2

      If it's not burnt you can re-use it. Let it cool down, strain anything that's in it and use it again. This works best for savoury items as oil can take on the flavour of some ingredients. We used to do this and it saves so much money.

      I use peanut oil and reuse it 3-4 times. Also helps to use a small diameter but deeper pot to fry it in so you use less oil to submerge stuff.

    Hey there, just a tip for people who watch these videos primarily to relax: Slow down playback to 0.75. The music sounds kind of rough sometimes, but it's a much more relaxed atmosphere. I don't know if it's intentional, or if it happened organically, but I'm getting stressed out at normal speed. At 0.75, the speech mostly sounds more natural and relaxed.

    I think this is your weakest show, i'm interested in trying other videos recipe on the channel, but i'll probly never ever do a "but cheaper" because I live alone and you can't go buy a single item or enough for a single person, instead of showing the price per serving, which tells us fuck all honesttly, you should show the min amount it would cost buying the smallest serving you can buy. if I have to buy a whole bag of flour, pickle jar etc just to make 1 burger i'll end up paying way more, I feel like But cheaper is a good series if you have a huge family or throw party with 20 people all the time. it feels like the approach is like "hey if you're poor you can make nice food for cheap" but it does the opposite effect where i'm telling myself: i'll never be able to afford the ingredients used in this.

    • @jasminep6195
      @jasminep6195 Год назад +1

      This could definitely work for you. You just have to open your mind a little more. All of these ingredients would be about $12-15 (if you opt for 1lb of beef and omit the drink). You can make the rest of the burgers frozen patties since it’s just you and cook them when you want them.

    • @Eclyptical
      @Eclyptical Год назад +1

      The key is to freeze stuff to make multiple meals out of the same amount of work. I make 8 burger patties, 8 buns, and a bunch of tots and then when I feel like a burger I throw the buns in the oven to thaw, throw a frozen burger on a cast iron pan and then fry the tots straight from frozen at the same time.

    No home smash burgers! Take 5.5 oz 80/20 loosely handled ground beef lightly pressed to bun diameter. Liberally salt and pepper then sous vide at 137 deg with minimal vacuum until pasteurized - around 90 min. Pat dry and add a light mayo spread for better Maillard. Place on hot grill ( charcoal best) and flip and rotate every 30 - 45 seconds till both sides are covered with grill marks. Add room temp cheese while on last flip on grill. Place on toasted store bought Hawaiian or brioche with condiments of choice. A delicious, SAFE, juicy med or med rare burger. Note - medium rare means lower internal temp. Therefore the burger should be served immediately after coming off grill for best experience. BTW, leftover burger patties are good next day or even frozen. Any suggestions?

    Only one small critique/suggestion when you press a burger on the heat you force out the rendered fat. If you press into salt, onion and garlic powder and black pepper off the heat (i just use a cold small sheet tray) you keep the fat in the burger plus you inbed the seasoning in the meat as well. Also if you add seasoning this way instead of mixing it in ground beef you dont run the risk of over working your meat.

    There's an alternate burger you can try.. same technique as what Josh used, but for burger assembly try this. Bottom bun, coat bun with garlic aioli sauce, layer of sharp cheddar, hamburger patty, havarti cheese, hamburger patty, american cheese, and coat the top half of bun with garlic aioli sauce. If you do not have any hamburger buns, but you do have bread, you can turn this into a grilled burger to melt the cheese as well.

    I came to this channel for the first time today because who doesn’t want a cheaper burger (if you like them). However, to create this you’ll need:
    -$199 kitchenaide mixer (you know if you don’t want it to take three times as long-I’m being modest since he has the professional model $399)
    -$4.99 bulk salt
    -$16.99 for 2 lbs of beef (cuz you know inflation, not sure where you’re buying beef, maybe wholesale with a restaurant license 😏)
    -$5.99 pound of flour
    -$.99 yeast packet
    -$2.99 2 ounce jar of sesame seeds
    -$.79 onion
    -$5.00 jar of pickles (unless your fancy and buy it from the cold bar at Wholefoods)
    -$5.50 pack of American cheese
    -$3.99 for pint of blackberries
    -$5.99 for 5lb bag of sugar ($2.99 if you go with a 1lb box)
    -$2.99 for two sticks of butter
    -$3.99 for a jar of Mayo
    -$3.49 for mustard
    -$1.50 for potatoes
    -$7.99 for a liter of olive oil
    -$.99 for Selter
    -$20 for the glass pitcher ($12.99 for a Rubbermaid)
    -$59.99 for a decent induction cook top on Amazon
    -$55.00 for an okay set of induction cookware
    -$30 ballpark for all other kitchen gadgetry shown in the video
    GRAND TOTAL: $418.16
    Food to stock the kitchen (before he serving sized everything in the calculation): $84.17
    Just to get your first round of burgers will be $10.52/meal.
    You’d have to make this meal, with your initial food haul, 3.2x minimum and that doesn’t include cost of replacing the fresh ingredients each time you cook, especially the beef!
    Everyone isn’t iron chef with all the tools, and whose got the time or money for cooking plus buying all the hardware. Some people can make more money in the time it takes to make this meal offsetting any of your perceived savings from buying out. Furthermore, most hardworking people don’t have the luxury to “eat on the cheap”. Another ludicrous Gen Z preaching how easy it is to save money, just to keep the clicks rolling in. You’re out of touch bro. 😎
    Plus your personality is a rip off of Harley from epic meal time and your inflated head at 4:54 proves that 🔥

    Cheeseburger meal is one of those thing you get because you want something decent fast. But it's a 100% times better when you make it yourself. I wouldn't recommend making your own bread since it's gonna take too much time, just buy some brioche buns abd you'll be set. Loved the tators instead of fries option. And making your own cheeseburger will definitely fired up your smoke alarm so enjoy making it.
