Probably one of the oldest sought-after burgers in America comes from an era where creativity was a key part of survival because of the Great Depression. When it came to burgers in this time period, the big question was how to make a burger that used less meat while still filling the bellies of the customers. Enter the Oklahoma onion burger, or as some call it, 'the depression burger.' The Oklahoma onion burger, which, according to legend, was first made in the 1920s in a restaurant in El Reno just outside of Oklahoma City. This was because onions were cheap to buy in bulk and paired incredibly well with beef. They discovered that when you smash these two together with a slice of cheese and a soft potato bun, you are left with a burger that satisfies any hunger, tastes like heaven, and doesn’t break the bank. This is the reason why, to this day, the Oklahoma onion burger is still one of the most sought-after burgers that people go nuts over. So, if you have never had one before, we recommend giving them a try today because we know they will hit the spot just like they have been for over 100 years!

This looks AWESOME! Forgive my ignorance, but please help me...doesn't, "smashing down," a patty essentially rid the patty of the incredible juices?
I remember an episode from, "Bar Rescue," where a chef was simply pressing down on a patty, and he got more grilled than the onions!
By the way, I would definitely eat that!
@@trevorjensen2706 it depends on how you are cooking it. If you’re pressing down on a burger while on a grill grate the juices fall onto the coals/fire. With a smashburger your smashing the burger down before the fats come n the meat start to render and melt so the juices bubble up through the meat. A lot of times the edges are thinner so they get crispy while the center is a bit thicker to hold the juices. Pair that with a good maillard reaction from the flat top and you get pure heaven.
Perfect no ketchup. Mustard onion and pickles. Yum.
@@SnSGrills, that makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your reply. Thank you, sir.

Sweet onions are everything for flavor! Sweet white onions, Vidalia onions and this is the season for them makes everything better!!!
I see people buying normal yellow onions at the store and i just roll my eyes
@@edithboozy1000 I just thought they're two colors red and white. And I prefer red cuz they're more spicy/ pungent while the pale ones are more bland. What is the third type even? Never heard of naturally sweet ones either. Just caramelized onions.
I Love Vidalia onions--there is nothing better
@tooniemama6959 i love just eating caramelized valadia and some morel mushrooms. Just add a little olive oil and butter and you are good to go.. ❤

Oklahomie here since birth, and to see the outsiders enjoy this burger makes me feel good. Its a huge staple here. And i dont live in the outskirts. Just okc. I love all the outsiders food too! Everyone has something to bring to the table!
From OK here, and yes, those are amazing. They were invented during the Great Depression as a way for the owner to make his nickel burgers less expensive to make. Didn't know how special the thing he was inventing was!

What is making it less expensive to make ? Don't understand.

@@yungcess3708 I’m Tulsa too. Recently moved here. Born in Europe, grew up in Dallas, currently in Tulsa & I love it. Funny enough I’ve been a Sooners fan my whole life. My grandpa played football at OU so I always wanted to check out Oklahoma. Went to college there and decided to move to Tulsa (a lot cheaper than Dallas lmao) anyways Oklahoma food is insane. I go to a lot of local spots to eat out, then I buy my groceries from the Amish in Chouteau. Highly recommend the Amish for steaks and burgers you make yourself. All super clean meats with nothing added to it. One of the treats of Oklahoma! Saving for a house and thinking about Owasso.. I’ve heard it’s amazing and it’s a booming city just 20 mins from my job in Tulsa. Sorry for the rant I’m just new to Oklahoma and wanted to say how much I love it!

This is the most accurate I’ve seen someone on RUclips make the Oklahoma onion burger. Most don’t realize the onions need to be “paper thin”. Also most don’t realize the first side of the burger is supposed to get a little crispy. Onions, pickles, mustard and cheese only to be authentic. Job well done here!
Glad you loved it. I agree that it’s pretty authentic and so so good!

A lot of people realize that the onions need to be paper thin…

That’s literally how most smash burgers are made tho😂 they gotta be paper thin onions for when u smash the burger, plus the usual smash burger toppings… Idk maybe it originated there, but this is just a typical smash burger to most people😂
As an Oklahoman myself, I approve! Great job, Sir!

This is me and my family's favorite burger, and it's easy as fuck to make. I slice the onions with a mandoline and make a simple burger sauce (mayo, ketchup, mustard and a couple spices) instead of using mustard, but those are minor details. The Oklahoma fried onion is as good as it gets when it comes to burgers

There's a burger house that makes these here in my neighbourhoord (i live, in Rio de Janeiro Brazil) and they are delicious. Onion is an absolute killer when it comes to burgers, the combination is fire!

Condiments don't belong on burgers. That had plenty of flavors on it before adding the pickles and mustard. I'd rather just add bacon.
