Honestly my favorite part of CSP is that you can always use "clear" as a painting color by clicking the little checkered box under your color swatches. So legit every pencil, pen, watercolor, oil, etc brush you have can become an eraser of equal value and it makes blending an absolute dream

As someone who is also slowly transitioning into using CSP more, if you were already mind-blown by the CSP’s fill tools then wait til you try out Vector Layers. Just look up CSP’s Vector Layers. Also, I don’t know what it’s actually called in CSP but one tool that definitely helped speed up my workflow in CSP is it’s little sun tool window. It’s that little square box of tool icons that float above your canvas. I just recently learnt that you can customize that lil tool bar with shortcuts to some of your favourite or most used tools and functions while painting in CSP. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg with what you can do in CSP for digital art. Looking forward to seeing what else you create next digitally in CSP. Also, in case you didn’t know, since you’re an ole PS user, did you know that you can import your fav PS brushes and smudge tools into CSP and use them? So in case you were missing your fav PS brushes, you can bring them into CSP and use them and they work just as good as they do in PS :) Oh! And since you also like to show your digital art process, CSP also has a Timelapse feature like Procreate where it records your canvas. The only thing is I think you’ll have to enable it for each new canvas I think. Just two more tips for you. All the best with learning CSP and can’t wait to see more of your findings BD
Thank you for the tips!!! I know about some of these, but still have to explore the vector layers and a ton of other stuff. Btw about the burshes - do you know if it's possible to migrate presets? Unfortunately most of the brushes I use in PS are in preset format and I haven't had success figuring out how to import those. I don't even understand the exact difference between presets and brushes, but they are different file types. Hmmmmmm.
@@CosmicSpectrumArt You’re welcome ☺️ To answer your questions on presets, if you’re referring to PS Tool presets, as far as I know you can’t import TPL files into CSP. Only ABR files and it’s as easy as simply dragging and dropping the ABR file straight into CSP and it should open up/import easily. The only thing I can think of is to convert your PS tool presets to brushes in PS, export them as one ABR file (so they’re all together) and then bring them into CSP by dragging and dropping. I know for a fact that you can convert your tool presets to brushes in PS (based on all the times it nags me to save my tool preset as a brush >-
@@honey3762 Not everyone has an ipad tablet to use procreate ......some of us only have a computer to draw you know as long as we still can use CSP 1.0 that we paid for it's fine
@@honey3762 CSP will still have one time payment options though. Also Procreate is ipad only. That and not everyone is absolutely against the subscription model. I'll only be sticking with v1 until base v3 comes out and one time buying that. I don't need anymore features, just bug fixes which will be free. So I don't plan on using the subscription upgrades.
Your art is just becoming more polished and polished with each video!! I love both of your traditional and digital art videos, but I felt like it was so satisfying seeing this whole piece coming together. Your editing I feel now complements your voice overs too and makes things very easy to follow. I’ve learned a lot - thank you so much for sharing your experience!
I've been using CSP (and Manga Studio, the precursor, before it) for years and I'm STILL finding all the cool stuff it can do. One of my favorites is 'convert brightness to opacity', which is under the Edit tab. It will make your layer greyscale and then make the lighter areas more transparent (with white being completely transparent) and the darker areas opaque (with black being completely opaque). It's a game changer for artists who work traditional to digital, because it means you can scan in a sketch or line art, mess with the levels until it's pure black and white, and then hit 'brightness to opacity' and turn it into just lines as if you'd drawn them on a separate layer, which you can then mask/reference/etc normally. It's also super helpful for if you just have a digital file that's lines and white on one layer, for example if you downloaded a coloring page or if you accidentally merged your line art layer with the background/Paper layer (a danger with CSP's many, usually useful, hotkeys). My other most HUGELY favorite thing is vector layers. If you're not using them to ink, CHANGE TO THAT NOW. Vector layers are created with the little button to the right of the raster layer creation button (and to the left of the create group button). They are INSANELY useful for inking. They aren't technically a true vector like you would get from Adobe Illustrator or whatever, but they allow you to scale your lines larger or smaller, infinitely, without quality loss, and manipulate the 'bones' of individual lines, and best of all, use the vector eraser, when used on a vector layer, will delete a line to the nearest overlap. It's kind of hard to explain but it basically means that you can over-draw your inks and then easily erase the extra with just a touch of the eraser. No more careful fiddling to make sure there's no overlap or weird corners! It speeds up the drawing process SO MUCH. You can even convert raster layers to vector layers (or vice versa), though converting a raster layer to a vector layer sometimes makes it look weird. The only real downsides are a) some brushes look a bit odd or 'smoothed out' on a vector layer and b) you can't flood fill on a vector layer. However, if you're using clipping masks on a second, raster, layer to color your lines, it's not an issue. I typically avoid clipping masks and instead use the transparency lock feature (farthest right icon, the checkerboard with a padlock, on the top row of icons on the layer palette) to keep all my stuff tidy, especially since I prefer to work on as few layers as possible (for example my flat colors are generally all on one layer) but I've been thinking of changing to masks like you used here for the non-destructive feature you talked about. Not sure. It's hard to break years of habit! Thanks for the awesome video, I've been meaning to try the various fill tool options you listed here and this is good motivation to do so. Also first time seeing your art, it's stunning! I look forward to seeing more of your videos and figuring out how you get such gorgeous painted looks on inked line art pieces XD
CSP really does have so many good features but I wouldn’t recommend it to new artists since they’re transitioning to a subscription based business model. Those of us who purchased a license with them are okay for now but in the future our version of CSP will be rendered obsolete. Right now I’m learning how to use Krita to prepare myself for when I’ll no longer be able to use CSP effectively.
@@CosmicSpectrumArt yes and the feature updates are paywalled (except bugs and maintenance). Unless you wait for the next version perpetual licence. You can get all previous versions one time forever.
@@박다니-u5o only feature updates will be behind a paywall. Stability and bug fixes will be free still. If you don't need the new feature(which most don't) you don't need to subscribe to anything.
"obsolete" only means no support, you can use something that's obsolete for as long as it works, and most of the time you'll find help on the internet for whenever you have bugs or any problems. There's a lot of people using older versions of photoshop (obsolete versions), and so many other softwares, you don't have to stop using it just because you paid 50 dollars and maybe in some years it will stop being supported by graphixly.
CSP v1 is on sale right now, 40% off. Thats less than $40 CAD. I just bought it and would still recommend it to any other digital artist just starting out. It has a mindblowing world of functionality for the price. And it will still receive stability updates until the release of version 3. Version 2 isn't even out yet (coming next year). So you can pay once, at a deep discount, for this program, and still use it for YEARS to come. The vector functionality is mindblowing--it even has a very decent analog for PS's liquify tool now. There's really no reason not to buy it if you can afford it.
Medibang has a sensitivity setting on the bucket tool, and it works pretty well. And you can choose if the bucket tool will respect all the lines in the screen or just the layer you're on. Edit: WAit a Sec, HAVE YOU BEEN DRAWING WITHOUT A CLIPPING LAYER??? I don't even remember the time before I found out about this tool.
Yeah... it's shameful to admit LMAO but there was some sort of block in my head. A friend tired to explain clipping masks to me once but I just didn't friggin get it hahahah sometimes I guess things like this are difficult to grasp at first, and there's a lot of different ways to explain how it works x'DD
my favorite thing is that you can color pick outside of CSP. i don't know if you can do that with another program, but it's something that i use ALL THE TIME. you just open up the color settings (double clicking the active color), and there's an eyedropper next to the color display that you can use to colorpick from anywhere!
I've been doing graphic design and image manipulation/editing, and it's the closest I've gotten to drawing or anything like since my military injury. Recently I've been re-learning to draw, and csp has helped so much with my confidence. Knowing how to use photoshop, I feel, balances out my shaky hands. I can manipulate the colors and lines so freely. Good video.
I just switched to Clip Studio, after using Photo Shop for years, since when it used to come on a CD-ROM. I find that Clip Studio suits my needs. My art friends as well as people on RUclips and Instagram and love it.
Sadly with art apps being pay per month or year it's not cost effective for my iPad procreate is perfect for me , and for free medibang pain is a great starter app for phone, laptop, and iPad for those who can't afford anything yet, I wasted so much time in medibang though , procreate has a massive brush options and it's helped me so much and the app having animation feature was a huge boost as fire alpaca or flip a clip was the only other options at the time for free or cheap , to each their own of techniques and tools it's really up to the individual to see what they like best and I'm happy to see and hear others Share their favorite programs this video was super helpful even if I don't use the same program because of how versatile these tips are!

You can also open extra canvas views of your canvas that you can put on other monitors and have a flipped version as well. It helps for working on details on the drawing display and you can look up at the other display at the whole image :) Window > Canvas > New Window, then drag it anywhere.... Camera settings for subview works on the additional canvases when they are in focus. I personally use "Fit to Navigator" Button on two extra canvases, one standard and one flipped horizontal
OMg yess!! welcome to the light of Clip Studio! I can do comics COMPLETELYon the ipad and its a lifesaver. I cant wait to see what other things you get into! There's so so many good tools/ tips and tricks. I also swear by Frenden's Brush Pack (paid, but WORTH) and of course all the amazing assets on the store /3d models are lifesavers for getting comics DONE!

Seems the subscription model is for all devices, but you can still one time purchase for an actual computer. Kinda lame if you only have a tablet, but at least the plans start really cheap.

I think i'm on the luckier side with these things! I've never really experienced sustained wrist pain. I had more neck pain/back and sometimes my finger joints would feel super sore, but I know the limit (basically just need a softer grip and can't draw for more than 5 hours continuously). I think the best advice I can give on this is to try and be active, do stretches and do some back exercises to keep a balance, and make sure to not go past your limits when you feel pain. Take breaks ;u;

Little tip for what you are doing at 5:09 : take the magic wand tool and set it to "reference all layers" then you can select that area with just one click. Hope my english was good enough to understand ^^ and that the tip is helpful.

The illustration came out so great Yana! I’m so glad you found your way into CSP hahaha ✨ My lineart are always super clean and it can be really time consuming. But I use vector layers combined with the vector eraser to make my clean lines faster! The eraser allows to delete anything that intersects with each other if sets right and it’s so useful!
So first things first, beautiful painting and very helpful tips (this is gonna save me so much time lol). I fell in love with CSP during my free trial and I could never go back. Now that they (finally!!!) added liquify all the more so :D I think the main difference is that photoshop was created to, you know, photoshop stuff, while CSP was created specifically to make art on a blank canvas - at least that's the feeling I get. And it was affordable!!! even for a hobbyist like me, unlike photoshop. I love how the UI has the built in brush options like stabilization, angle etc. (not just size and opacity) and how I don't have to open a little drop down menu to pick my brush. Also I love how I can change the brush size by holding ctrl+alt and dragging the cursor - whenever I open photoshop now I just get so annoyed that I can't just drag it to the size I want. Also the fact that tab turns off the UI is really neat when sketching. Oh and of course the flipping (I put it on F but you can put it on any other key) being a built in thing that I don't have to open three menus for. Remember to flip your canvas kids! The rotating is also super neat and easy (put that one on R). Should I go on? xD

The brushes and pressure sensitivity is UNMATCHED dude. I learned art on my iPad in procreate... And the amount of frustration I constantly encountered with procreate had me literally not wanting to do art anymore because it was so frustrating to me. The pressure, the super unintuitive tools, and the terrible transform tools.... I have NEVER been able to draw pretty eyelashes in procreate. Tell me WHY the first time I used CSP I drew the prettiest lashes ever... I was SHOOK. I may mess around in procreate, but I will never use it for serious art EVER again.
I personally was never able to get into procreate haha x'D so I don't blame you. there's always just something so off about it, and YES OMG THE HORRIBLE FREE TRANSFORM TOOL what an atrocity.
Clip Studio has so many cool features that I’ve never seen before. Also for coloring lineart I would suggest using alpha lock so you can just color directly on the layer and not have to use a clipping mask.
I've been using csp for over 4 years now ,I remember that I directly fall in love when I tried the one month free trial ,it's the perfect program for me I didn't even try looking up for other programs. Even tho rn they are trying to switch to a monthly/yearly (?) Subscription I don't really have the money for it but I will not change it ,a lot of ppl are hating it but for me even if it's for a subscription it's worth it ,I'm still hoping they will not change tho X) . I am a recent convert to Clip Studio. "Convert to drawing color" is amazing. I can swap my black line art to sepia or convert pencils to blue line in one click. Super handy.
The no gap fill tool is amazing! I started playing with it recently and already I can see the time it takes for me to put down my plats drop by half. ^^
Amazing illustration, as always. Idk if you’ve seen it already but clip studio has the automatic Timelapse feature, where you can see the illustration that you did in a Timelapse. And one of my personal favourites Is the vector layer, where you can change anything on your drawing without losing quality. You can change the the line shape, the texture and the color of your drawing with it. Very useful
This is really helpful for me, I’m painting with Procreate but some tools in this program are so much better for shading and editing Color’s. So it seems in this video. The painting is so adorable and I love the Color’s in this one very much. Thanks for sharing
CSP's Lasso fill tool under the Figures menu is a major time saver for me, I use it ALL the time. Haven't found any other art programs with it that make it quite as easy.
After the whole "monthly sunscription" thing, I don't know how worth it is to keep using. Artist in low income countries can't afford this change, and there is no way of knowing how long the whole software will work without updates Yeah, I get it. Spousour vídeo, whatever, you can't talk about it. But everyone reading it, know this: CSP have now a subscription system. Buying now guaraantee the software without subscription in place, but you will not get new updates. If they give out a update on v2 that you want, you will have to pay monthly to keep it. Have this in mind if you decide to use csp for now on. There are free options like krita, and as far as I know procreate is a one time purchase Be smart fellow artists
@@Bajamanator there are still two versions that you get to chose from though. One time purchase isn't being taken away. Outside of mobile, most wont need to subscribe as they won't need the extra feature the subscriptions provide. Stability updates and bug fixes will still be free.
@@izumichan31 I understand that, but overall it is an anti consumer practice to move to a subscription based system. They easily could've just had a flat fee to upgrade to V2, V3 etc. later on, maybe a discount for those who already have V1 licences. And even if the feature updates aren't that significant, it's still locking people out of content just because they don't want to get locked into a subscription system that will take away features you had access to if you decided you only wanted to use the one time payment version. There's no reason to defend scummy business practices that only focus on profits and don't benefit the end user.
I can’t deny that CSP has some really nice QoL features (including the built-in recording feature, which is the best feature imo, and PS can’t even manage that much despite charging more), but the main thing that makes me stick with PS is the brushes…Idk what it is, but I have yet to find brushes in CSP that gives me the same polish as my brushes in PS. I feel like everything i render in CSP ends up looking too smooth and cartoony, when i prefer a more realistic finish. But yeah CSP has a myriad of tools and features that PS doesn’t for a way better deal. Even small things like being able to clipping mask entire folders to a single layer, being able to color coordinate your layers with more than just like 8 colors, having easy access to brushes or 3D modeling tools, etc. its an amazing piece of software. Even if they are betraying the entire community by switching to a subscription model, for those who are willing to pay and want a program that focuses solely on illustration and making that process easier, CSP is the better deal over PS by far.
I kind of agree about the brushes. If I find a way to replicate the brushes I use in photoshop, i'd switch completely, but for now I think I'm satisfied to jump back and forth between the programs. I think CSP will catch up in the brush department.... and I have to admit I haven't put in the required effort to figure out their brush engine and maybe even make my own brushes. I bought Kyle's magapack for photoshop years ago and it's the best thing ever 😂
@@lettucecat3538 You can port PS brushes over to CSP, but because the brush engines are different, you may have to do some heavy tweaking in order to get it to perform in the way that you're used to. And even then it still may not behave the way you want.

There will still be one time payment options available. Where you keep the version you buy that'll be maintained for a period of time. New feature updates just wont be free. Which is basically how software used to be. You buy the version you want as is. It's supported for a version or two then you either stick with the version you bought or you buy the next one with all the new features in it. You only have to subscribe if there's a feature you absolutely need that you can't wait for to be bundled into the next version. Drawing programs aren't game engines where a feature can make or break you. Basically stick to version 1 it'll be supported all the way until version 3. Then if version 3 has a good amount of features you want buy v3 since v 3 will be supported until whenever v5 happens.
@@izumichan31 No, they'll also cease providing stability updates which means any bugs that may develop won't be addressed for Version 1 or even Version 2 if you purchase it. This also means they won't optimise it for any software/firmware updates for Windows or Mac OS, so it could be the second you do a serious upgrade with your computer, you can no longer (safely) run CSP. Version 3 will only be available via subscription. Subscriptions put the power back with the company. They own the copy, we're just renting it, which means they get to set the prices however, and whenever, they want. This is _not_ a good thing for creators, and not a good thing for the art community. This is a money grab by CSP, plain and simple, and makes it even harder for lower-income earners to access quality art applications.
I loved Clip Studio, I bought it a long time ago, but they decied to fucked up I have the one time version of this program and I payed a lot for it and knowing that in 2 years the program can go broke I have no intention to support them anymore. It is true that CSP is the best program for drawing, expecially comics and it was the best option untill they decided to change the one time purchase for an UPDATE subcription. LOL I still hope they will turn this around and make the right choice, untill then I DO NOT recommend buying this program right now. I got a friend that bought it a few days before the announcement and she felt scammed.
How is the program going to break if its not being updated and no changes are being made to the code? They're following the same model as several other art programs and on a way cheaper scale.
@@tealynx I'm not saying that it would be 100% but they said that they will stop updating this version after the realease of the version 3.0, that means if the windows or mac get new updates or versions like for example windows 11 this version could be incompatible with the software or having more other bugs. You are going to pay for something that in 2 years will have a chance to get broken? Plus This version is permanent and on their website when people go to purchase CSP there is no information about this changes, maybe they should read and make their judgements before buying this program and I know that some people don't know about this situation, and making advertisement a few months before they will change it to an update subscription version it's kinda yikes. Doesn't feel right you know... at least let the people know what they are buying.
@@Ruby-art I see where you're coming from... I just don't really understand why you would expect a program to keep being updated indefinitely with a one-time purchase. Somebody has to do the work - who pays them, where do the funds come from? I can see how on a very basic level, the expectation is there because that's what you purchased - so from that perspective - fair enough. However if you actually think about the company and how they are a growing entity with employees, it's completely unreasonable to expect them to stick to the one-time purchase model. I'm surprized they even did that in the first place, and all things considered this is still a reasonably priced program considering its powerful tools and features. It's for professional use. I understand that there are many people who use it for fun, but that shouldn't limit the company from growing and developing new tools. I think they went out of their way to keep the one-time purchase version going for as long as they can, and people seem upset because it won't last forever. I really wish people would try to put themselves in the shoes of the company sometimes. It's really not easy running a business, and it's such a shame that people get so aggressive and throw around words like 'scam' 'betrayal' and 'greed'. They're just trying to run and grow a business, and it isn't wrong or greedy to make a profit.

I'm not questioning the fact that we have to pay to use the newest version, they do whatever they want to I don't care about that, what I care is them making big summer sales for a version that they are expecting to stop working on it and don't tell what are their expectations about that product and keep selling it like nothing has change. That's called missleading people. I don't want to make you feel uncofortable about this, you did nothing wrong, the problem is them.
@@CosmicSpectrumArt I believe the issue is with the "update subscription" model and not actually selling the full thing. It would be okay if they would sell the V1, V2, V3 etc... with different purchases, but if you buy V3 and don't buy the update subscription you don't get features that you should have access to since you bought the product, this is even worse if you subscribe and then unsubscribe and all the updates you had before become unavailable. It would be much better to sell complete versions and then update them for a bit giving all those updates to the owners and eventually sell a new version with big new tools. Also them stopping to support certain versions just because they feel like it doesn't make sense, security updates need to be done and bug fixes to maintain paid tools working. Obviously if they update their stuff for more recent OS it makes sense to stop supporting the program but that takes years to happen. Look at a tool like OBS Studio that did a recent update that only this week stop supporting their program version on Windows 7. tl;dr Paying for a program and then having to pay for an "update subscription" doesn't make sense and it is the company being greedy as this stuff should be included on the one time purchase price to begin with. Security updates should be maintained for as long as possible and not just because the program reached the second newer version. CSP should sell big versions like new game releases and have their updates has "free DLC's" to keep the tool fresh for a while and incentivise sales. Celcys the company that owns CSP is doing a couple of millions a year with their products so I would say they are doing pretty well for themselves.

As someone who has used art programs before subscription models became the norm, I would still recommend CSP because of all of its useful tools. Back then, it was pretty normal to buy a new version of a program every few years or so…?

Hey! I saw you move a really large brush in ClioStudio very fast and smooth. I was amazed because when i do that it becomes very slow and laggy, and my computer is quite powerful. I noticed there’s a very big difference per brush how laggy they become with a huge brush size. Which brush you use here? 🙏
CSP is great and there is so much more to learn. Color With Kurt has some good vids on time saving CSP features as well. For illustration/manga/comics you can't really beat it. Even the floating lasso tool menu is genius (and you can add more buttons to it).

theres also this tool called "Edge Erase" on the community marketplace its a super convenient eraser when doing ur flat colors also may i know why is ur pen like that? just out of curiousity
I'm guessing her pen's like that because holding it for a longer time causes cramps and leaves print onto the skin from gripping it too hard, so maybe to make it a bit more comfy while working for longer periods of time? I do the same with mine hehe

For CSP on iPad. I tried it mutiple times and also talked to multiple people and it can be a bit too much on the screen if you have a smaller iPad. I really would recommanded everyone to frist try it out before commiting to any payments. Because it is kinda pricy for something you may not even like to use.
somehow found this video a little odd. beyond the utility of no gap fill, i found most of the key features you described are there in programs like medibang paint pro plus- brush search, clipping mask, reference window, mobile version, and more. CSP does them better i admit, but would you say it's enough difference to be worth spending the money?
I don't say it specifically i guess, but I'm comparing it to photoshop specifically because that's what I use. (I've also used procreate, sketchbook pro and sai but that was a while ago and I liked photoshop best out of those). I honestly would pay to have both, it's worth it for professional use and especially if you do comics. Ultimately the cost isn't something that would be the same for everybody so i can't definitively say yes this is the only one and the best drawing app.. i do think its the best and most sophisticated and well thought out combo of tools though, from my exp.

Honestly my favorite part of CSP is that you can always use "clear" as a painting color by clicking the little checkered box under your color swatches. So legit every pencil, pen, watercolor, oil, etc brush you have can become an eraser of equal value and it makes blending an absolute dream
And the keyboard shortcut for that is C
I enjoyed the 'in your face' style of recording your digital art process, it felt like I was shadowing a master at work. Great Job!

As someone who is also slowly transitioning into using CSP more, if you were already mind-blown by the CSP’s fill tools then wait til you try out Vector Layers. Just look up CSP’s Vector Layers. Also, I don’t know what it’s actually called in CSP but one tool that definitely helped speed up my workflow in CSP is it’s little sun tool window. It’s that little square box of tool icons that float above your canvas. I just recently learnt that you can customize that lil tool bar with shortcuts to some of your favourite or most used tools and functions while painting in CSP. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg with what you can do in CSP for digital art. Looking forward to seeing what else you create next digitally in CSP.
Also, in case you didn’t know, since you’re an ole PS user, did you know that you can import your fav PS brushes and smudge tools into CSP and use them? So in case you were missing your fav PS brushes, you can bring them into CSP and use them and they work just as good as they do in PS :)
Oh! And since you also like to show your digital art process, CSP also has a Timelapse feature like Procreate where it records your canvas. The only thing is I think you’ll have to enable it for each new canvas I think. Just two more tips for you. All the best with learning CSP and can’t wait to see more of your findings BD
Thank you for the tips!!! I know about some of these, but still have to explore the vector layers and a ton of other stuff. Btw about the burshes - do you know if it's possible to migrate presets? Unfortunately most of the brushes I use in PS are in preset format and I haven't had success figuring out how to import those. I don't even understand the exact difference between presets and brushes, but they are different file types. Hmmmmmm.
@@CosmicSpectrumArt You’re welcome ☺️ To answer your questions on presets, if you’re referring to PS Tool presets, as far as I know you can’t import TPL files into CSP. Only ABR files and it’s as easy as simply dragging and dropping the ABR file straight into CSP and it should open up/import easily. The only thing I can think of is to convert your PS tool presets to brushes in PS, export them as one ABR file (so they’re all together) and then bring them into CSP by dragging and dropping. I know for a fact that you can convert your tool presets to brushes in PS (based on all the times it nags me to save my tool preset as a brush >-

@@honey3762 CSP will still have one time payment options though. Also Procreate is ipad only. That and not everyone is absolutely against the subscription model.
I'll only be sticking with v1 until base v3 comes out and one time buying that. I don't need anymore features, just bug fixes which will be free. So I don't plan on using the subscription upgrades.

I love both of your traditional and digital art videos, but I felt like it was so satisfying seeing this whole piece coming together. I've been using CSP (and Manga Studio, the precursor, before it) for years and I'm STILL finding all the cool stuff it can do. One of my favorites is 'convert brightness to opacity', which is under the Edit tab. It will make your layer greyscale and then make the lighter areas more transparent (with white being completely transparent) and the darker areas opaque (with black being completely opaque). It's a game changer for artists who work traditional to digital, because it means you can scan in a sketch or line art, mess with the levels until it's pure black and white, and then hit 'brightness to opacity' and turn it into just lines as if you'd drawn them on a separate layer, which you can then mask/reference/etc normally. It's also super helpful for if you just have a digital file that's lines and white on one layer, for example if you downloaded a coloring page or if you accidentally merged your line art layer with the background/Paper layer (a danger with CSP's many, usually useful, hotkeys). My other most HUGELY favorite thing is vector layers. If you're not using them to ink, CHANGE TO THAT NOW. Vector layers are created with the little button to the right of the raster layer creation button (and to the left of the create group button). They are INSANELY useful for inking. They aren't technically a true vector like you would get from Adobe Illustrator or whatever, but they allow you to scale your lines larger or smaller, infinitely, without quality loss, and manipulate the 'bones' of individual lines, and best of all, use the vector eraser, when used on a vector layer, will delete a line to the nearest overlap. It's kind of hard to explain but it basically means that you can over-draw your inks and then easily erase the extra with just a touch of the eraser. No more careful fiddling to make sure there's no overlap or weird corners! It speeds up the drawing process SO MUCH. You can even convert raster layers to vector layers (or vice versa), though converting a raster layer to a vector layer sometimes makes it look weird. The only real downsides are a) some brushes look a bit odd or 'smoothed out' on a vector layer and b) you can't flood fill on a vector layer. However, if you're using clipping masks on a second, raster, layer to color your lines, it's not an issue. I typically avoid clipping masks and instead use the transparency lock feature (farthest right icon, the checkerboard with a padlock, on the top row of icons on the layer palette) to keep all my stuff tidy, especially since I prefer to work on as few layers as possible (for example my flat colors are generally all on one layer) but I've been thinking of changing to masks like you used here for the non-destructive feature you talked about. Not sure. It's hard to break years of habit!

CSP really does have so many good features but I wouldn’t recommend it to new artists since they’re transitioning to a subscription based business model. Those of us who purchased a license with them are okay for now but in the future our version of CSP will be rendered obsolete. Right now I’m learning how to use Krita to prepare myself for when I’ll no longer be able to use CSP effectively.

"obsolete" only means no support, you can use something that's obsolete for as long as it works, and most of the time you'll find help on the internet for whenever you have bugs or any problems. There's a lot of people using older versions of photoshop (obsolete versions), and so many other softwares, you don't have to stop using it just because you paid 50 dollars and maybe in some years it will stop being supported by graphixly.
CSP v1 is on sale right now, 40% off. Thats less than $40 CAD. I just bought it and would still recommend it to any other digital artist just starting out. It has a mindblowing world of functionality for the price. And it will still receive stability updates until the release of version 3. Version 2 isn't even out yet (coming next year). So you can pay once, at a deep discount, for this program, and still use it for YEARS to come. The vector functionality is mindblowing--it even has a very decent analog for PS's liquify tool now. There's really no reason not to buy it if you can afford it.
Medibang has a sensitivity setting on the bucket tool, and it works pretty well. And you can choose if the bucket tool will respect all the lines in the screen or just the layer you're on.
Edit: WAit a Sec, HAVE YOU BEEN DRAWING WITHOUT A CLIPPING LAYER??? I don't even remember the time before I found out about this tool.
Yeah... it's shameful to admit LMAO but there was some sort of block in my head. A friend tired to explain clipping masks to me once but I just didn't friggin get it hahahah sometimes I guess things like this are difficult to grasp at first, and there's a lot of different ways to explain how it works x'DD
my favorite thing is that you can color pick outside of CSP. i don't know if you can do that with another program, but it's something that i use ALL THE TIME. you just open up the color settings (double clicking the active color), and there's an eyedropper next to the color display that you can use to colorpick from anywhere!

I've been doing graphic design and image manipulation/editing, and it's the closest I've gotten to drawing or anything like since my military injury. Recently I've been re-learning to draw, and csp has helped so much with my confidence. Knowing how to use photoshop, I feel, balances out my shaky hands. I can manipulate the colors and lines so freely.

I just switched to Clip Studio, after using Photo Shop for years, since when it used to come on a CD-ROM. I find that Clip Studio suits my needs. My art friends as well as people on RUclips and Instagram and love it.
Sadly with art apps being pay per month or year it's not cost effective for my iPad procreate is perfect for me , and for free medibang pain is a great starter app for phone, laptop, and iPad for those who can't afford anything yet, I wasted so much time in medibang though , procreate has a massive brush options and it's helped me so much and the app having animation feature was a huge boost as fire alpaca or flip a clip was the only other options at the time for free or cheap , to each their own of techniques and tools it's really up to the individual to see what they like best and I'm happy to see and hear others Share their favorite programs this video was super helpful even if I don't use the same program because of how versatile these tips are!

You can also open extra canvas views of your canvas that you can put on other monitors and have a flipped version as well. It helps for working on details on the drawing display and you can look up at the other display at the whole image :)
Window > Canvas > New Window, then drag it anywhere.... Camera settings for subview works on the additional canvases when they are in focus. I personally use "Fit to Navigator" Button on two extra canvases, one standard and one flipped horizontal

OMg yess!! welcome to the light of Clip Studio! I can do comics COMPLETELYon the ipad and its a lifesaver. I cant wait to see what other things you get into! There's so so many good tools/ tips and tricks. I also swear by Frenden's Brush Pack (paid, but WORTH) and of course all the amazing assets on the store /3d models are lifesavers for getting comics DONE!

Seems the subscription model is for all devices, but you can still one time purchase for an actual computer. Kinda lame if you only have a tablet, but at least the plans start really cheap.

I think i'm on the luckier side with these things! I've never really experienced sustained wrist pain. I had more neck pain/back and sometimes my finger joints would feel super sore, but I know the limit (basically just need a softer grip and can't draw for more than 5 hours continuously). I think the best advice I can give on this is to try and be active, do stretches and do some back exercises to keep a balance, and make sure to not go past your limits when you feel pain. Take breaks ;u;

Little tip for what you are doing at 5:09 : take the magic wand tool and set it to "reference all layers" then you can select that area with just one click.

The illustration came out so great Yana! I’m so glad you found your way into CSP hahaha ✨ My lineart are always super clean and it can be really time consuming. But I use vector layers combined with the vector eraser to make my clean lines faster! The eraser allows to delete anything that intersects with each other if sets right and it’s so useful!

So first things first, beautiful painting and very helpful tips (this is gonna save me so much time lol).
I fell in love with CSP during my free trial and I could never go back. Now that they (finally!!!) added liquify all the more so :D
I think the main difference is that photoshop was created to, you know, photoshop stuff, while CSP was created specifically to make art on a blank canvas - at least that's the feeling I get. And it was affordable!!! even for a hobbyist like me, unlike photoshop.
I love how the UI has the built in brush options like stabilization, angle etc. (not just size and opacity) and how I don't have to open a little drop down menu to pick my brush. Also I love how I can change the brush size by holding ctrl+alt and dragging the cursor - whenever I open photoshop now I just get so annoyed that I can't just drag it to the size I want. Also the fact that tab turns off the UI is really neat when sketching.
Oh and of course the flipping (I put it on F but you can put it on any other key) being a built in thing that I don't have to open three menus for. Remember to flip your canvas kids! The rotating is also super neat and easy (put that one on R). Should I go on? xD
@@alexastorm97 I literally draw as a hobby and not even well so why om earth would I do that? I can just go without updates like with my cracked photoshop from forever ago until I somehow manage to lose my license and then switch to some other program

The brushes and pressure sensitivity is UNMATCHED dude. I learned art on my iPad in procreate... And the amount of frustration I constantly encountered with procreate had me literally not wanting to do art anymore because it was so frustrating to me. The pressure, the super unintuitive tools, and the terrible transform tools.... I have NEVER been able to draw pretty eyelashes in procreate. Tell me WHY the first time I used CSP I drew the prettiest lashes ever... I was SHOOK. I may mess around in procreate, but I will never use it for serious art EVER again.
I personally was never able to get into procreate haha x'D so I don't blame you. there's always just something so off about it, and YES OMG THE HORRIBLE FREE TRANSFORM TOOL what an atrocity.

Clip Studio has so many cool features that I’ve never seen before. Also for coloring lineart I would suggest using alpha lock so you can just color directly on the layer and not have to use a clipping mask.
Krita, its free and has alot going on to it as well.
I've been using csp for over 4 years now ,I remember that I directly fall in love when I tried the one month free trial ,it's the perfect program for me I didn't even try looking up for other programs. Even tho rn they are trying to switch to a monthly/yearly (?) Subscription I don't really have the money for it but I will not change it ,a lot of ppl are hating it but for me even if it's for a subscription it's worth it ,I'm still hoping they will not change tho X) . I am a recent convert to Clip Studio. "Convert to drawing color" is amazing. I can swap my black line art to sepia or convert pencils to blue line in one click. Super handy.

Amazing illustration, as always. Idk if you’ve seen it already but clip studio has the automatic Timelapse feature, where you can see the illustration that you did in a Timelapse. And one of my personal favourites Is the vector layer, where you can change anything on your drawing without losing quality. You can change the the line shape, the texture and the color of your drawing with it. Very useful
This is really helpful for me, I’m painting with Procreate but some tools in this program are so much better for shading and editing Color’s. So it seems in this video. The painting is so adorable and I love the Color’s in this one very much. Thanks for sharing

CSP's Lasso fill tool under the Figures menu is a major time saver for me, I use it ALL the time. Haven't found any other art programs with it that make it quite as easy.

After the whole "monthly sunscription" thing, I don't know how worth it is to keep using. Artist in low income countries can't afford this change, and there is no way of knowing how long the whole software will work without updates
Yeah, I get it. Spousour vídeo, whatever, you can't talk about it. But everyone reading it, know this: CSP have now a subscription system. Buying now guaraantee the software without subscription in place, but you will not get new updates. If they give out a update on v2 that you want, you will have to pay monthly to keep it.
Have this in mind if you decide to use csp for now on. There are free options like krita, and as far as I know procreate is a one time purchase

@@Bajamanator there are still two versions that you get to chose from though. One time purchase isn't being taken away. Outside of mobile, most wont need to subscribe as they won't need the extra feature the subscriptions provide. Stability updates and bug fixes will still be free.
@@izumichan31 I understand that, but overall it is an anti consumer practice to move to a subscription based system. They easily could've just had a flat fee to upgrade to V2, V3 etc. later on, maybe a discount for those who already have V1 licences. And even if the feature updates aren't that significant, it's still locking people out of content just because they don't want to get locked into a subscription system that will take away features you had access to if you decided you only wanted to use the one time payment version. There's no reason to defend scummy business practices that only focus on profits and don't benefit the end user.
I can’t deny that CSP has some really nice QoL features (including the built-in recording feature, which is the best feature imo, and PS can’t even manage that much despite charging more), but the main thing that makes me stick with PS is the brushes…Idk what it is, but I have yet to find brushes in CSP that gives me the same polish as my brushes in PS. I feel like everything i render in CSP ends up looking too smooth and cartoony, when i prefer a more realistic finish.
But yeah CSP has a myriad of tools and features that PS doesn’t for a way better deal. Even small things like being able to clipping mask entire folders to a single layer, being able to color coordinate your layers with more than just like 8 colors, having easy access to brushes or 3D modeling tools, etc. its an amazing piece of software. Even if they are betraying the entire community by switching to a subscription model, for those who are willing to pay and want a program that focuses solely on illustration and making that process easier, CSP is the better deal over PS by far.
I kind of agree about the brushes. If I find a way to replicate the brushes I use in photoshop, i'd switch completely, but for now I think I'm satisfied to jump back and forth between the programs. I think CSP will catch up in the brush department.... and I have to admit I haven't put in the required effort to figure out their brush engine and maybe even make my own brushes. I bought Kyle's magapack for photoshop years ago and it's the best thing ever 😂
wait u can put ur ps brush on csp tho theyre compatible does it feel like it changed??
@@lettucecat3538 You can port PS brushes over to CSP, but because the brush engines are different, you may have to do some heavy tweaking in order to get it to perform in the way that you're used to. And even then it still may not behave the way you want.

It's such a shame reading everyone's gushing reviews of CSP and knowing that they're going subscription based :/
There will still be one time payment options available. Where you keep the version you buy that'll be maintained for a period of time. New feature updates just wont be free. Which is basically how software used to be. You buy the version you want as is. It's supported for a version or two then you either stick with the version you bought or you buy the next one with all the new features in it. You only have to subscribe if there's a feature you absolutely need that you can't wait for to be bundled into the next version. Drawing programs aren't game engines where a feature can make or break you. Basically stick to version 1 it'll be supported all the way until version 3. Then if version 3 has a good amount of features you want buy v3 since v 3 will be supported until whenever v5 happens.
@@izumichan31 No, they'll also cease providing stability updates which means any bugs that may develop won't be addressed for Version 1 or even Version 2 if you purchase it. This also means they won't optimise it for any software/firmware updates for Windows or Mac OS, so it could be the second you do a serious upgrade with your computer, you can no longer (safely) run CSP. Version 3 will only be available via subscription.
Subscriptions put the power back with the company. They own the copy, we're just renting it, which means they get to set the prices however, and whenever, they want. This is _not_ a good thing for creators, and not a good thing for the art community. This is a money grab by CSP, plain and simple, and makes it even harder for lower-income earners to access quality art applications.

I loved Clip Studio, I bought it a long time ago, but they decied to fucked up I have the one time version of this program and I payed a lot for it and knowing that in 2 years the program can go broke I have no intention to support them anymore. It is true that CSP is the best program for drawing, expecially comics and it was the best option untill they decided to change the one time purchase for an UPDATE subcription. LOL I still hope they will turn this around and make the right choice, untill then I DO NOT recommend buying this program right now. I got a friend that bought it a few days before the announcement and she felt scammed.
How is the program going to break if its not being updated and no changes are being made to the code?
They're following the same model as several other art programs and on a way cheaper scale.
@@tealynx I'm not saying that it would be 100% but they said that they will stop updating this version after the realease of the version 3.0, that means if the windows or mac get new updates or versions like for example windows 11 this version could be incompatible with the software or having more other bugs. You are going to pay for something that in 2 years will have a chance to get broken? Plus This version is permanent and on their website when people go to purchase CSP there is no information about this changes, maybe they should read and make their judgements before buying this program and I know that some people don't know about this situation, and making advertisement a few months before they will change it to an update subscription version it's kinda yikes. Doesn't feel right you know... at least let the people know what they are buying.
@@Ruby-art I see where you're coming from... I just don't really understand why you would expect a program to keep being updated indefinitely with a one-time purchase. Somebody has to do the work - who pays them, where do the funds come from? I can see how on a very basic level, the expectation is there because that's what you purchased - so from that perspective - fair enough. However if you actually think about the company and how they are a growing entity with employees, it's completely unreasonable to expect them to stick to the one-time purchase model. I'm surprized they even did that in the first place, and all things considered this is still a reasonably priced program considering its powerful tools and features. It's for professional use. I understand that there are many people who use it for fun, but that shouldn't limit the company from growing and developing new tools. I think they went out of their way to keep the one-time purchase version going for as long as they can, and people seem upset because it won't last forever.
I really wish people would try to put themselves in the shoes of the company sometimes. It's really not easy running a business, and it's such a shame that people get so aggressive and throw around words like 'scam' 'betrayal' and 'greed'. They're just trying to run and grow a business, and it isn't wrong or greedy to make a profit.

I'm not questioning the fact that we have to pay to use the newest version, they do whatever they want to I don't care about that, what I care is them making big summer sales for a version that they are expecting to stop working on it and don't tell what are their expectations about that product and keep selling it like nothing has change. That's called missleading people. I don't want to make you feel uncofortable about this, you did nothing wrong, the problem is them.
@@CosmicSpectrumArt I believe the issue is with the "update subscription" model and not actually selling the full thing. It would be okay if they would sell the V1, V2, V3 etc... with different purchases, but if you buy V3 and don't buy the update subscription you don't get features that you should have access to since you bought the product, this is even worse if you subscribe and then unsubscribe and all the updates you had before become unavailable. It would be much better to sell complete versions and then update them for a bit giving all those updates to the owners and eventually sell a new version with big new tools. Also them stopping to support certain versions just because they feel like it doesn't make sense, security updates need to be done and bug fixes to maintain paid tools working. Obviously if they update their stuff for more recent OS it makes sense to stop supporting the program but that takes years to happen. Look at a tool like OBS Studio that did a recent update that only this week stop supporting their program version on Windows 7.
tl;dr
Paying for a program and then having to pay for an "update subscription" doesn't make sense and it is the company being greedy as this stuff should be included on the one time purchase price to begin with.
Security updates should be maintained for as long as possible and not just because the program reached the second newer version.
CSP should sell big versions like new game releases and have their updates has "free DLC's" to keep the tool fresh for a while and incentivise sales.
Celcys the company that owns CSP is doing a couple of millions a year with their products so I would say they are doing pretty well for themselves.

As someone who has used art programs before subscription models became the norm, I would still recommend CSP because of all of its useful tools. Back then, it was pretty normal to buy a new version of a program every few years or so…?
This. I am continuously baffled by these talks about 'betrayal' and such. It only makes sense and is still quite fairly priced imo.

ive been using csp for around 10 years now and i adore it! its often on sale for really cheap, too. its so fantastic for creating comics. also, they hace 3d models you can use as references

Cosmic, I have switched to CSP about two years ago and do NOT regret it and it was so awesome to learn something new! Question: I stopped doing digital art because my fingers hurt so much but I noticed you have some sort of a cushion on your stylus, may I ask what it is or how to do the same hack? Hey! I saw you move a really large brush in ClioStudio very fast and smooth. I was amazed because when i do that it becomes very slow and laggy, and my computer is quite powerful. I noticed there’s a very big difference per brush how laggy they become with a huge brush size. Which brush you use here? 🙏
Did you change the settings to the brush?? Or has it always been laggy?
CSP is great and there is so much more to learn. Color With Kurt has some good vids on time saving CSP features as well. For illustration/manga/comics you can't really beat it. Even the floating lasso tool menu is genius (and you can add more buttons to it).

I'm guessing her pen's like that because holding it for a longer time causes cramps and leaves print onto the skin from gripping it too hard, so maybe to make it a bit more comfy while working for longer periods of time? I do the same with mine hehe

For CSP on iPad. I tried it mutiple times and also talked to multiple people and it can be a bit too much on the screen if you have a smaller iPad. I really would recommanded everyone to frist try it out before commiting to any payments. Because it is kinda pricy for something you may not even like to use.
somehow found this video a little odd. beyond the utility of no gap fill, i found most of the key features you described are there in programs like medibang paint pro plus- brush search, clipping mask, reference window, mobile version, and more. CSP does them better i admit, but would you say it's enough difference to be worth spending the money?
I don't say it specifically i guess, but I'm comparing it to photoshop specifically because that's what I use. (I've also used procreate, sketchbook pro and sai but that was a while ago and I liked photoshop best out of those). I honestly would pay to have both, it's worth it for professional use and especially if you do comics. Ultimately the cost isn't something that would be the same for everybody so i can't definitively say yes this is the only one and the best drawing app.. i do think its the best and most sophisticated and well thought out combo of tools though, from my exp.
ArtStudio Pro is a good substitute for Photoshop on iPad
