The college of eloquence bard can use a well-reasoned, well-spoken argument as inspiration, literally inspiring confidence with logical arguments. Mechanically this blend of logic and theatrical wordplay is mainly represented in the silver tongue class feature you gain at 3rd level that gives you a minimum die result of 10 for all your Persuasion and Deception checks. That and the other 3rd level subclass feature that lets you use your bardic inspiration to lower a creature's saving throw with particularly persuasive arguments.
You also get unfailing inspiration at 6th level that essentially lets players keep the inspiration die if their roll still fails. Universal speech makes communication even with bizarre creatures a breeze. And its subclass capstone infectious inspiration is a neat way to "gain" extra inspiration, and overall as a bard college eloquence is a solid buff and debuff option. Consider this bard college if you want to really cement your role as the face of the party.

Just started* playing one of these and as someone who sometimes struggles with the roleplay aspect (I've played rangers in so many editions you guys and been the gruff outdoorsman), this is SO MUCH FUN. And because I'm often trying to talk my way into situations where I'm not 100% creative enough to handle them on my own, I'm constantly setting things up and then turning to another of our less roleplay-centric players and saying, "... as my esteemed colleague _____ can explain in more detail." This keeps me from getting all Main Character Syndrome-y and also helps to give the shier players an excuse to get in on the RP side of the fun.
And bards are one of those where 'situational' spells can be made into the right situation pretty much constantly. I'm about the only Tabaxi that almost anyone in these domains has seen, and they keep mistaking me for some sort of cat-were. So if our party needs to blend in and not be noticed as "That Party who Burned Down the Inn" pretty much I can just cast Disguise Self and all of a sudden no one even gives us a second look (this happened and it was fun). And gawd I'm fifth level and the lowest I can roll on a persuasion roll is 21, and 18 for deception. So now there's not MUCH impediment to roleplaying even if you're not creative enough to come up with something convincing unless your DM is super strict.
And when Patrick says that Unsettling Words can be hilarious, I told a Darklord's wolfwere lieutenant that he wasn't the Bestest Boi. He missed his saving throw on our wizard's spell, but unfortunately that meant that since he got his turn before she went, he was angry enough to tell his minions to kill me and I was down for the rest of the combat as our frontliners got flanked. Still fun though.
*okay we're like 20 sessions in but our previous campaign went for 80+ sessions - we have an awesome DM.

I love the College of Eloquence and the overall flavor of it. My character is a half-elf Shakespearean-esque actor/playwright who utilizes his words to magically influence others around him. I’m making all of his known spells require a verbal component and really leaning hard into that flavor. His bond is to right a “magnum opus” play, of sorts, to make a name for himself and fulfill the legacy his forefathers (who were also playwrights) left behind.
Overall I think this college serves as a very practical and relevant role in a party. It’s very focused on others though, so you do find yourself feeling a bit less useful if you’re by yourself or up against constructs or something.

Just put together a Harengon Bard and the obvious choice was College of Eloquence - he's totally an actor who uses his words to great effect. Looking forward to how he fits in with the rest of the party, starting our campaign this weekend.

My half elf bard just got to level 3 for me to take the college of eloquence subclass! She's a dapper-dressing night club/lounge owner who accumulates and deals in trading secrets. To avoid taking up too much screen time, I play her as the type who knows it's better to wait and watch, and insight one of my expertise stats. It's pretty fun! My party usually takes their turn talking and then pull me to the front when they want me to persuade a client to pay us more reward or what have you XD

A lot of players at my table generally are really combat focused so I thought this would be a great balance and just to liven things up as we don’t usually resolve anything without combat lol

Awesome video! I just started playing a College of Eloquence Bard recently and welcome the advice. Combatwise I've stunk so far (bad rolls), but it's hopefully going to come in handy when I talk our way out of combat with some unworldly being, or I'm pulling my teammates from the depths of despair in our psychological campaign.

Keshrel is a half-orc college of eloquence bard, who maybe spent a little too much time with some fey, thus never really maturing emotionally. His specific flavor of eloquence is a combination of childlike persistance, ignorance for social boundaries, and disarming honesty.

Currently running a College of Eloquence Bard as an Assassin that uses his words in order to compell his target into doing his dirty work. Has no physical weapons and no armor, but he'll pick the strongest enemy in the room, and go, "Hello there. You look positively daft, help me kill your friends. I command you."

I just had to make a new character in the campaign I’m playing and I went with a lawful evil yuan-ti pure blood, college of eloquence bard. I’m super excited I made him horrible at combat he really just is a support. His backstory is basically he is a bounty hunter who captures his targets by getting close and using his words to trap them. I also took the actor feat to help out with this type of play style.

Another way for DMs to help them not chew up too much scenery is looking at the groups of people they're talking to. They may not respect some one so full of words, the respect and react to actions or strength more than just pure word smithing. This is another way to help people like the Barbarian still intimidate without using Charisma as well. Not sure why that has to be reinforced when Jeremy Crawford himself and many of the other designers have said you don't have to use the Attribute that is assigned for the ability if doesn't make sense.

I‘m a dm. But if I ever get to play, I want to play my Kobold Bard of eloquence first. His name is Bicklenickle Nickwick and he has a tragic past. Because he is a Kobold, he has to be very well spoken, so he can weasel himself out of every tricky situation.
The mix works well, because you can just make his charisma +2 and with his extra sorcerer Cantrip (mind sliver) and the draconic cry he is perfect for debuffing enemies and buffing allies.

I am fairly new to the spellcaster type of DnD, and chose a Bard of Eloquence (character was studying to be a lawyer before being sucked into this world). Does anyone have good spell suggestions for a law student? I have picked up a couple of words spells (ie. healing word), but am not familiar with great spells to round this guy out with that would fit in the theme.

Couldn't help but notice there aren't many views or comments on your video, so I just thought to engage. I'll be playing a lvl 5 Fire Genasi college of eloquence bard in a one-shot. Can't wait to see how it pans out. I'm also kind of new at D&D, but I'm just so fascinated about everything. The thing that's concerning me the most at this point is the balance between her diplomacy and short-fuse temper. Also a bit insecure about the vicious mockery on the fly. It needs to be on point, or else it'll seem out of character. Any suggestions to improv some kicker insults? =)

He is a charlatan, and believes there is nobody who can fool him, so he looks at everybody else as the mark. Dislikes physical combat, and would much rather convince the enemy through clever intimidation tactics that a fight would mean certain death. Always looks to finish an encounter creatively...and in the way that makes him look the coolest.
