Lizardfolk 🐊 Player Race for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons from Volo's Guide To Monster
We examine another player race fond in Volo's Guide to Monsters, the lizardfolk. This 5E D&D race is very suited for play barbarian, druid, cleric, fighter, and ranger character classes. The would make awesome nature priests or savage warriors. They are best equipped to for go armor and just use a shield. The lizardfolk offer up some great potential for role playing in an adventure, encounter, or campaigns.

I can see it being a good laugh when your lizardman ally eats the enemies.
But when they try to eat your dead character, I can see players getting sore about it.

Or when one party member gets you to kill some hobos. One of them happened to be a child, then you turn them into javalins, and use the flesh for salted human.

I had a Gnoll Ranger once, ate bits of the mage and the paladin after a near TPK on the way back to town to have them ressed ( they were cooked already, died to a dragon turtle breath, and the spell doesn't require them to be complete).. they never got over that tho. also killed a horse that we had just bought cuz we were going into a cave and didnt know how long. better to have rations than lose money..

What's good about it is I'm waiting for this moment with my party, it's not that Hiss is evil but would see this as a waste unless they were intent on revival... He harvests enemies all the time, he also eats just about anything in his path after killing it.... He tried something akin to ice cream and was disgusted lol we have done rolls on just about everything he bites to see if he gags it up after taking a chunk. So far he's eaten goblins, a bag man, and baby ropers... So far they only thing he has had that has bothered him is ice cream...

One of the Human Fighters in a campaign I was running was resurrected into a Lizardman and role played trying to fight his instincts to consume fallen enemies... until the rest of his party was out of sight from the scene of carnage.

Lizardfolk necromancer. Take proficiency in history, you know where all the great burial grounds and mass graves are, make a squad of skeleton lizard spear throwers you can carry around in a bag of holding. Plus the whole eating of enemies and such. Not to mention goos Con plus a steady reserve of temp hp and grim harvest, makes a pretty tanky caster.

#8 You like to eat your food while it's still wriggling. So, cast Spare the Dying on an enemy before dinner? I am terrified, yet very curious.

*heals one hit point on downed enemy*
Enemy: "oh, thank you for your mercy. I'll change my ways and..."
LizardFolk to party: "Do you want to scavenge this one before or after I eat them?"
      Food:"What?"
LizardFolk: "Be quiet your food now."
*Proceeds to horribly devour enemy as he screams agony*

I made a Lizardfolk Barbarian, got an AC of 18 with no armor at level 1. We also changed it a bit so that Lizardfolk could use the bite normally as a bonus action rather than an action starting at the fourth level, based off of something I saw on Giant's Playground. We also let him fight normally underwater, without the usual penalties. Also keep in mind, 15 minutes is 150 turns.

I gotta say that of all the "new player races" in the Volo's Guide (not counting the "monstrous races"), the Lizardfolk are my favorite hands-down. I mean, I do like the other races (especially the Tritons and Tabaxi), but something about how practical Lizardfolk are just sings to me. I"ve always liked them since the days of AD&D 2nd Edition, but I have to admit that 5E really did well in continuing to bring out the roleplaying details for these species (as opposed to 3E and especially 4E, the latter of which practically ignored any supportive roleplaying advice for such beings).
I actually made a NN Hermit Lizardman Cleric of Knowledge prepared as a backup character in a Lost Mines of Phandelver game I was recently invited to (the DM and I go way back, and he feels that his players - all relatively new to tabletop gaming - could use a "veteran's advice"). The Lizardman was banished from his tribe for a "crime" he didn't commit (he was framed by a rival who felt he was too "weak" for being a "thinker") and, after much time alone in the wilderness, found solace in knowledge (and the deity Oghma), eventually acquiring divine powers.
I'm currently playing a CN Urchin Lightfoot Halfling Abjurer (CN because she's conflicted between her background of survival and self-reliance versus her wizard teacher's altruism and preference of company, not just for the sake of being CN). Her teacher's methods include nonviolence (so, the only offensive spells the Halfling will get are whatever she finds) and sharing knowledge with others (lots of spells such as Identify, Comprehend Languages, etc.). Should she die, the Lizardman would continue to provide much of the same abilities and guidance, though his alien psychology - and much of the roleplaying they will undoubtedly bring - should be entertainingly hilarious ([after an NPC party member dies] "Ssyths does not understand why Sssssoftskins wish to bury good meat when it can provide sssssustenance to ussss."). :)

yes with lizard folk they tend to eat there own upon death so that way they are still part of the tribe serving a purpose. no point letting food go to waste. you could see it as cannibalism or you could see it as a sort of afterlife as becoming food to the tribe means becoming part of the tribe even in death, giving them one last purpose to serve.

I was just finally getting around to getting Volo's Guide. I remember playing a lizardfolk character in 3.5E, which was one of my first D&D characters, and still one of my favorites despite him being terribly unoptimized and a bit of a mess stats-wise. He was a ranger/sorcerer (yeah) who was also a huge coward. He'd get the other players to take risks for him, and more than once made some mistakes that brought trouble to the whole party. Such as when everyone was going into what looked like the most dangerous part of a seemingly abandoned fort and he decided to just go see what was in the little storeroom off to the side instead of heading toward the barracks. And of course that meant he walked in on someone summoning a chain devil, then immediately ran away (shutting the door behind him) screaming for help before diving in some overgrown bushes and hiding. I helped out the Monk and Barbarian (who came running) by casting some spells and sniping with my bow from the bushes, finally coming out of "hiding" when the bushes were set on fire.

I really love the variant species from a Dragon Magazine article from later 2e. They had variations such as , Geckonids, Iguanids, Varanids, Crocodillians,, Eftoids and a few more I can't recall offhand. Each had their own quirks and cultural ideas as well as different score adjustments.
Does 5e have racial favored classes like earlier editions? Their's was Druid.

I have a Lizardfolk Druid based on the Lizardfolk Shaman in the Monster Manual, even going as far as to allocate stats in similar order. We rolled stats so he has Str 13, Dex 10, Con 13 +2, Int 7, Wis 17 +1, Cha 6. I also will be reflavoring spells a bit. So he has Animal Friendship (Reptiles only), and Speak with Reptiles. For my animal forms I'm obviously only going to use reptiles and dinosaurs. And lastly he is a Circle of the Land Swamp, since it seemed the most thematic. The Lizardfolk Shaman can only turn into a Crocodile, which my Druid will still be able to do, so losing out on Circle of the Moon's stronger forms isn't an issue for me.
I'm choosing not to use Hungry Jaws, however, as I feel the race already gets so much, I'm happy not using the special attack. The option to use an unarmed bite attack is good enough for me.
The best part of the race though, has to be reminding my party that if they fall, I will eat them. In a totally nonchalant way of course. They don't mind so much as I'm mostly not interested in gold or gems.

I’m going to be playing a Light Cleric Lizardfolk soon, and I’m really looking forward to exploring their transactional relationship to the gods. A dismal, distant swamp is perfect territory for bandits and nefarious cults so having a cleric or two around to deal with them seems necessary, and they would definitely appreciate either the healing or combat abilities a Life or Light Cleric would bring.

Can I ask for help on bring a cyborg like character on the field, as a player I don't have much experience with d&d but I really liked the sleepers from infinity wars which were once humans, elves, wolves, whatever but though this nanovirus they become both machine and almost a zombie robot hybrid so my question to you is how could you if you had a character who both knows machinery, and necromancey could they create this hybrid that has both the abilities of a zombie's service and toughness, with a machine like body. Please write or make a video on this as I am seriously curious about a 5e zombie cyborg hybrids both as summons and player characters. Thank you in advance for reading

Jonathan Bristor This great depends on what your DM will allow, and exactly what you want to do with it. Perhaps make a template that you could apply to "the host creature" if they are a NPC or some sort of a companion. Perhaps look for information on warforges, golems and undead.

Nerdarchy well I guess I played my lizard-folk wrong then me and my friend started D&D 3.5 Edition I believe. I was a battlemage lizard-folk. I had a back story where I was the smartest out of the whole clan that I came from but I wasn't the strongest so I was always made fun of him picked for that and one day I decide to go to some Mages College to learn more about the world being a battle mage they can only teach me so much so I decided to go on my own adventure one thing led to another bumped into a Wood Elf female figure it out that she was supposed to be this entity that keep the dark seal away stopping this old grade old powerful thing from Kissimmee the world and I join the group that way pretty much be in the brute of the group even though I still have my magic and sometimes I even had to be the pack mule. I still had hell of a lot of fun though and I've been trying to get back into the D&D again I just can't find anybody that wants to do D&D anymore if you guys got any suggestions on where I can find a group to join and where I can start that will be amazing and I definitely have a hell of a better story to work with with the new additions coming out and to tell you the truth the lizard-folk I made wasn't the greatest he was what you would call a by standard I will only react to things that would happen to me in general with more understanding of the D&D I can pretty much make a more better character and be more active in the group instead of just being there just to be there

Lizardfolk, the literal "cold blooded killer". Can't plan ahead, no emotions, no morality, very physical and don't care about faith nor fortune. I can already see the ruthless fighter build I want. Battlemaster that is cold and stern "you go here, meatboy!" The best part would be taking the "food" from fallen enemies/allies, imagine the fun times that are have over the rest of the party watching you butcher a dwarf for snacks. I would love to see the flavour of the artisan to be used for making finger necklaces and bone jewelry. I'm really loving the RP for this race, so savage.

I was rocking a lizardfolk fighter in a pathfinder campaign. Dragas was basically a spin on the legend of Spartacus. A slave turned gladiator then mercenary.
He was basically caboose from red vs blue in that he was adorably dumb yet he tried. Now in a fight, he was first in and last out.

Lizardfolk Bladesinger in a campaign where it's not restricted to Elves. 13 AC + Dex + Int would be better than any light armor you could wear until +2 Studded Leather comes along, and comparable to Mage Armor, so you wouldn't need to waste a spell to augment your AC in that way.

Oh heyy it just so happens that that is the character I would play as my 1st.
The Fighter class is the only one that really appeals to me, and the Champion archetype is simple enough with good damage potential.
I don't want to play a Human so I looked up a list of all races, and there it was... Lizardfolk.

Lizardfolk Monk looks nice. You have a better unarmed attack at lower levels with your bite, you get extra AC while unarmored + wis + dex mods, which can put your starting AC very high, you get a useful perk for crafting simple/monk weapons, you can heal of your unarmed attacks, and Con+2 and Wis+1 is amazing for monks aswell. And the flavor of having a primal and simple point of view about existence, life and death itself feels amazing to pass by.

I have always loved lizard folk, gnolls, ibixian, and orc/half-orc. For 5th ed I think a lizard folk arcane caster with the likes to eat while its food is still wiggling trait would be funny. If the food stops wiggling it uses either a L0 lightning spell or prestidigitation to make it wiggle before he eats it, lol. In 3.5 I played a Black Scale lizard folk and a Poison Dusk lizard folk. The Poison Dusk was my very first D&D character, was a ranger/order of the bow using drow poison on everything. The Black Scale was dragon shaman of either brass or bronze dragons which ever gave spider walk. Was pretty fun being a hulking 8ft (while hunched) black lizard man with a massive great club that has constant spider climb. Finding a seat at the bar was never a problem when me and my brother (copy character my friend was playing) crouched through the doorway of a tavern as most people moved out of the way. I think we were C/G. The first time we walked into a bar and we tried to sit on the stools then the DM thought about how much we weight (900lb) and we broken the stools and fell on our asses. From then on we each sat on 3 stools at once.
Currently I'm playing a L6 druid advanced, feral, lizard folk (feral creature is from Savage Species [3.0], advanced creature is PF Bestiary 1) in Pathfinder. DM did kinda start to get annoyed because my turns take so long after I shift into a medium deinonychus because I have 5 atks (the atks in the creature entry and animal companion don't match so we used the one that made more sense to us as well as calling the feet atks claws and not talons because it is not a bird and its name literally mean terrible claw), then my pet which is currently a small deinonychus has 3 atks (until next level when it becomes medium and has 5 atks). A single atk from just me as a medium deinonychus has a dmg of 13-20 and if all 5 atks hit 65-90 dmg, then my pet on top of that and an we both get an extra 1d6 per atk if we are flanking together.

Hey guys, I just made a Lizardfolk Barbarian and I'm trying to come up with a good reason for him to become angry and rage. My best guess is that if he sees a potential threat like when a wolverine chases a bear away from a kill would be a perfect time to rage, more of a defense mechanism. I'm also trying to figure out a backstory for him and why he becomes an adventurer. I had initially thought it would be cool to use the inheritance background from SCAG think perhaps a Dracolitch mysteriously landed in his village and started killing everyone. He had just finished his right of passage and was told to run while the others attempted to either flee or fight. He watched his chieftain die and not was alone. I was thinking of vengeance as a motive but after reading the description it doesn't sound like something a lizardfolk would do. Any ideas?

I would re-skin it as survival instincts, rather than rage. Similar to the old stories of warriors going into some kind of battle trance, rage doesn't have to be "I get so angry I am better at fighting. That is all just flavor text when it comes down to it. The other things a barbarian draws on is "animal nature, keen instincts and primal physicality".
That and most people think of barbarian's rage resistance as shrugging off hits by having damage resistance, but they aren't just shrugging off sword hits, no one is, the hp system is just a system for keeping score. A 1d8 sword swing looks different on a competent warrior who currently has 100 hp then a kobold with 5. I would suggest that the sword never touches the competent warrior even though it "hits" them. The hit made the warrior use some of their combat effectiveness by losing hp when they swiftly dodged it or blocked it. On the other hand that kobold was gutted when the player rolled a 6 on the damage.
Really you could rename all of the abilities and it would still be the same class with the same powers. The CON armor bonus still makes sense because they are using their natural physical competency in combat, which is running off of how long they can go full tilt in a fight. If you are out of shape in the wild, yer dead.
What would make your lizard barb special is that his survival instincts go beyond mere fight or flight reflexes, he can repeatedly sustain minutes of hyper adrenaline fueled combat, a feat in and of itself.
Backstory. I think of lizard man as social creatures only for strength in numbers rather than a pc race that would seek revenge. The alien mindset of them would have me thinking that your character surviving would instill in him a sense of unease around other reptilian creatures. He feels 'at home" or safe around fleshy less threatening creatures that he is confident he could kill if the need arose. I think a lizardman would be keenly interested in establishing dominance over the others in the group (be recognized as the strongest). Pepper in some alien mindset phrases that mammalian sentient creatures wouldn't say and you are good to go. A goliath barb would threaten to kill you, a lizardman threatens to kill you by eating you

I'm making a Lizard Barb myself and was curious if you're stacking their Natural Armor with Barb's Unarmored Defense. (13+DEX+CON+ optional shield). That seems like it could easily be taken advantage of.

For a Pathfinder Planescape game I decided to take Lizardfolk in a different direction and came up with the premise of an enclave of Lizardfolk in the Outlands who had been influenced and nurtured by a Couatl into a civilization of peace and culture, who favored a simpler lifestyle but were not unsophisticated. They were capable of richer emotional response. Their lore stated that the Ancestral Mother was gifted seven eggs by the great Quet'Zhual, Lord of Feather and Fang. Each egg gave rise to one of the Seven Clans of the Xi-Couatl, the Couatl-Kin Lizardfolk, who call themselves Atzo'e-Ma or Spawn of the Seven. The Atzo'e-Ma have feathered crests and further tufts of feathers at joints and tailtip, and each clan is distinguished by a distinct color of the rainbow. Some develop rich multicolored crests, which mark them as destined to become Questing Knights of Quet'Zhual. I played one such, Naxtlacotl of the blue-crested Za'Extli-Ma clan, a Paladin of Xymor with his bonded mount triceratops named Chotaka'e or 'Threefold Piercer of Falsehood'. In keeping with the Couatl theme their aesthetic is very Mesoamerican in style, which always looks good on lizards. So Naxtlacotl ran around wielding a giant two-handed Macuahuitl alongside an intelligent living bulldozer with the temperament of a happy puppy. I need to do more with the Atzo'e-Ma and their marshy home in the Sea of Trees.

I think the problem with their personality is perhaps due to poor examples. What I think they are trying to convey is less "alien" and more "animal". Lizardfolk ha a very primal behaviour pattern.
Consider how wolves and coyotes think. They have a social structure, politics, and outlooks on all other living things. Things that might be prey are treated with aggression. Things that are possibly too dangerous to be taken down easily are avoided with respect. Hunter and desperation may alter that outlook, but for the status quo, that's how it would be. Even domestic cats act in a similar way. To their masters they can be affectionate and playful, but when another cat is introduced, it's a war for territory. Pecking order becomes very important.
Since they (Lizardfolk) do not generally wear clothing, they would be confused by it, as they have scales. They might, though, adorn themselves with jewelry made from trophies or traded objects as a sign of status. Look at it as a visual clue to others in the tribe so that they are less likely to be attacked by their own. "He who wears the teeth of the crocodile has defeated the crocodile, and is to be respected."
They might well understand trade, but not money. You can't eat money. But skins, meat, fish, weapons, raw materials or anything else truly useful would be valued. They *might* keep the pearls found in oysters, especially if they've learned that other local humanoids want them - which makes getting steel weapons for war and hunting easier. They don't know WHY humanoids like pearls - only that they do - so clever Lizardfolk might pick up on this and take advantage. They might trade skins, extra fish, or keep a marsh clear of goblins in exchange for materials.
Seagulls will learn that a fast food restaurant throws out it's trash at a certain time, and may even gather in flocks just to "get the goods". They don't know why this "bounty" shows up - only when. Seagulls are DULL creatures, and they can learn. Lizardfolk will too.
Whether or not a Lizardfolk eats a dead companion might depend on the tribe. Cannibalism might be practiced where it is believed the strength of the fallen will be carried on, or where resources are scarce. It may not occur where disease may have shattered populations, and so eating dead humanoids might come with some sort of "taboo". I think that comes down to player and DM choice, really.
This last trait should be discussed in a Session Zero to avoid any conflicts.

One of my all time favorite characters is Ralyth, a lizard folk barbarian. I made her back in a 2nd edition Spelljammer game and have remade her in later editions as well. I role played her rage ability as a simple abandon of all hesitation. This bled into the rest of her personality as she disliked deliberation, and if the party took too long trying to decide what to do she would simply act without them. In times of crucial decision making, they would sometimes take to chaining her to a fixed object (which she hated because of her background as an enslaved pit fighter). My most recent version of her includes the Cook's tool proficiency, but for some reason many people are hesitant to try the dishes she makes. I mean, come on! How do you know if myconid soup with gibbering mouther broth is bad if you never try it?

ive got a lizardfolk light cleric. some flying lizard women came flying towards our boat. after killing them my character without saying a word, grabbed one by the foot and dragged her down to his sleeping quarters. an hour or so later I walked back to the deck chomping on one of her legs. everyone knew what I had done and the DM considered making me roll to see if I contracted any STD's
I ended up getting a point of inspiration from that one xD
I also want to add that my character does want to try every kind of meat he comes across. We killed some pirates, spared one for questioning. The other cleric decided to cut his hand off and I immediately snatched it for a snack. I also like how 1x per short/long rest we can take a bite out of something for food. that alone tells me that playing a lizardfolk as a meat obsessed player is spot on.
I think in future sessions I might have to RP better towards our monk who lost a leg. maybe call him "hopper" or something

One thing I don't get about Natural Armor is why the hell they don't use Constitution as a bonus
Unarmored Defense has both, and Dexterity makes sense with Monks because their "Armor Class" is more of a "Parry/Deflect Rating", the more masterful or 'Dexterous' they are with their martial arts techniques the less they get hit.
For a Lizardfolk, wouldn't it make more sense if their Natural Armor bonus came from either Dexterity OR Constitution? Sleek scales that get in the way of landing a clean hit or tough scales that dampen blows. Both serve in potentially nullifying damage yea?
For any DMs out there, would you allow your players to change the Natural Armor bonus attribute if it made sense for their PC? If not, why?
Why must Dexterity step on Constitution's toes?

Other reasons... off the top of my head just now:
maybe the character has convinced himself to see his partymates as sort of hatchlings or a clutch of eggs that he/she must protect since in a way they are a lot like his/her sort of base of safety, home, and/or living utility tools which he could think of as something he's working on growing/improving/teaching as one might give birth to young 'lings.

I'm fascinated by lizardfolk for multiple reasons.
    >I'm right with Ted here; making some notes on lizardfolk characters, encounter ideas, campaign themes, and other things I might use or want to see in a game for the future.
(1)Loving the concept of this relatively simple folk (compared to the emo-antics of humans & their like) as a sort of relaxing-to-play, and humorous PC.
(2)The complexity and depth you put into it can easily ramp up or scale to your preference though. For example: an aboriginal-type character (the most common lizardfolk I'm guessing) may seem just a sort of simple, survivalist, but that doesn't mean you have to make them stupid, slow, or simple at all!
    ______
Have you guys done anything with lizardfolk PCs since the making of this video? Thought about any of the above yet in a serious, plan-oriented way?
    ______________
    >I'm seriously considering trying to figure out how I can get in on this lizardfolk fun. However I can play with lizardfolk sounds like a great change from the usual to me.
    >>I am thinking of trying to find a 5e group to play with locally, or online, by maybe just writing up some DM material to use.
    >>>I am so excited about this that although I have only DMed about 1 session [of 3.5] before(, which went reasonably well I guess), I might even trying to run a game myself;

so.. did WOTC drop the draconic origin for lizardfolk because the idea of them as shortsighted hedonists doesnt really mesh with the hoard keeping tendencies of their dragon ancestors keep in mind i dont have my copy of volo's guide yet so if this is a stupid question thats why but in 3.5 lizardfolk and kobolds were both considered draconic races right

whoa, zero punctuation there ^ but still good questions. I noted that they are said to SPEAK Draconic, which is interesting, and makes one wonder about their origin as a species/race. If they were just a thing unto themselves then you might think they'd have their own lizardfolk language right?

Why make their own language when there's a perfectly good language right there? (Draconic)
