I'm using them now with Driders and Choldriths as they make excellent minions. Also, I have a version I've combined with shadows to make strength-draining spider minions for a shadow dragon. Volo's guide has been a good resource.

fantastic. and great synchronicity for me -- i've got a planar drider that has been giving my players hell, and this group sounds like a great way to expand the options. thanks for this!

If you want to truly scare your players, consider a Drider Lich. I just brought that idea up at my table and the reaction on the suggestion alone was worth it.

haha, right on, Mike. That would certainly terrify them since they're currently 3rd level.

also, what i have done with my ancient and demented drider is the following -- since a drider already is a promising drow who has failed Lolth's test, who after transformation into a drow often becomes mad and/or an outcast, my drider's mania revolves around losing his drow family. living in exile and unable to return to his society he has taken up the art of building constructs. after decades of bungled experimentation he has managed at last to perfect the construction of a terrible hybrid which serves as his new family. the hybrids constructs use the body of a large or giant spider and the top half of a giant rat. they also spit a small glob of glowing green acid up to 20 feet. however these "children" only have around 10 HP on average, and an AC of 15. during these lower levels its been delightful to harass my players with these creepy-crawlies as they gain enough experience to go after the drider itself.

Garth at the Photomaginarium Maybe add Spider Swarms that murmur in tiny child-like voices, and have a Phase Spider that's been taken over by an Intellect Devourer who stalks the party and scrawls warnings on the ground with his sharp legs.
If you want to creep out the players, I can do this for days. ;)

I can't wait to get my copy of Volo's. I have to wait until the 17th because it was bought as a christmas gift along with SCAG. This monster definitely sets up ideas for me to use though!

kinda irrelevant but when I get everything for 5th edition and find a group I'm going to play as a spear weilding light armor guy who just asks every giant he sees to confess to the raping and murdering of his sister and the killing of her children

I could be wrong, but I was thinking that it was originally elves captured by the Drow that were then transformed into Chitines.
If that's the case then one could even write in an npc that escaped halfway through the transformation ritual.

Reminds me of the Nerubians in the Warcraft universe... I wonder when they first showed up in D&D lore.

Chit-tin-ee, as you say it, I think is pronounced "Ky-teen", like the substance exoskeletons are made from. "Chitinous" as a reference.

Dave's pronunciation of things drives me absolutely mad sometimes lol. Another great example of where he gets it wrong is Tiefling. He's always saying TIE-fling instead of TEEF-ling.

Mizati My best friend is like that. When he DMs I have to be very careful of how I name my characters. My Sorcerer "Zmey" was always called "Zimmy". Gauntlegrymm is called Gauntlet Grimm, and Gracklestugh is Gracklestow. He's an amazing DM, so I let these things go when I can- which is not that often, given how hard I had to work to overcome a local accent as well as a stutter when I was small. (My thought is, if *I* can, then...)

I actually use the Chitines and Choldriths to fill the role that the Drow usually fill. The Drow are just "Deep Elves" in my setting, and aren't skewed towards evil.

I wonder how Driders would work with chitnes.... Would they attack each other on sight? What do you think?

My question is two part... "Why create something that seems more antlike than spiders to be true servants of Lloth?" and second, "Why not bring back the Draegloth and do some minor modifications or have certain Driders that become zealously devoted to Lloth and FAR more powerful???... kinda like a psuedo-avatar"
I could see either as a better option, OR could do both and have the draegloth serving the psuedo-avatar driders.
personally I can really envision these advanced Drider Psuedo-Avatar as TRUE SERVANTS of Lloth and the drow fearing them, while they in turn look down upon drow as lesser beings trying to gain favor with Lloth through acts that are more out of self-interest than something that shows real devotion.

Magnathyr I personally don't imagine Chitines to look anything like the picture they use. I imagine four spider legs four arms and a humanoid face.

Sorry to be "that guy", but I think the "chi" in "Chitine" is supposed to be pronounced like "chitin" (pronounced "kai-tin"); the material that arthropod exoskeletons are composed of.
    Like "kai-teen" or "kai-tine".
I really like your content, by the way :)
